Cool dungeon features to make the underworld feel even more weird and cool:
An underground lake. There's a boat moored on the shore. Should the characters get in the boat and follow the flow of the stream, they'll eventually find themselves in what seems like a wide open underground ocean, under a starlit sky. Or if those lights are not stars, what are they?
A forest of mushrooms, tall as trees. Almost like a mockery of the type of fairy tale forest one would hear about in stories from the surface. There's a babbling brook. There's a whole ecosystem of fungal creatures mimicking surface life. Flying mushrooms the size of owls hunting small mushrooms in the shape of rodents. Lumbering fungal deer roam in herds. Is this by design or accident?
An underground city, seemingly abandoned. Everything suggests that there were once people here, living in houses carved into the stone, until they suddenly just weren't there. Shadowy figures seem to stalk the streets, but always flee when a light is shined on them. There is a strange blue light shining on the top floor of a tower in the center of the city.

Geological horror. You find a geode and crack it open and the crystal lining its walls is human blood that can't be genetically matched to anyone. You find a human skeleton but every one of the bones is made from rock, a rock that you know can't be whittled into those shapes. You find layers of clay and loam that sport ancient fossils at the top and the still-rotting corpses of modern animals at the bottom.
We haven't heard from Callum since last year ... he's finally back in the new chapter of A Net Too Wide to Break His Fall. Also, Matt's game of Heart: The City Beneath for Actual Play UK is finally under way! Watch part 1 on demand now and catch part 2 on Twitch on 8 March.
A clearer look at my look for part 1 of Heart: The City Beneath, streamed on Actual Play UK the other week. In @merelyroleplayers I'm just a voice – since this game is on camera I thought I'd make more of an effort and try to match the feel of the setting!
The bracer is by Skinbound on Etsy; and I marshalled my extremely basic makeup skills into something that ended up too subtle for the camera, especially compared to Fiona and @maddyisabstract, who are, to be fair, consummate pros.
Lessons learned, and if you tune in for part 2 next Friday 8 March, you'll actually be able to tell I've done something with my face 😄
