Chapter 1: New Kid
No warnings, just setup.
It was the first day of your junior year of high school when you met him. Your class was small, only 56 strong, and most of you had been in school together since kindergarten, so it wasn't easy for the new kid to blend in. That didn't stop him from trying to keep a low profile in the back of the room.
You were immediately captivated. There was something about his stormy blue eyes that drew you in. You tried to send a small, friendly smile his way when you made eye contact, but he quickly averted his eyes to the textbook on his desk, hiding behind his long fringe of curly dark blonde hair. You leaned over to your good friend Aayla to ask, "Know anything about the new kid?"
"I saw his family moving into the house down the street last week. But I don't know his name," she whispered.
The bell rang, signaling the start of first period, which was Calculus on "A" days. The whispered conversations contined as friends caught up with one another until the teacher, Mr. Mundi, stepped over to his computer and began roll call. Familiar names sounded off, until you heard, "Anakin Skywalker?"
"Here," you heard the boy finally speak from the back row. The volume of whispers grew as everyone turned to look at him. You felt embarrassed for...Anakin. What a unique name. Hardly anything new and exciting happened in this small town, so it would be a while before the novelty wore off.
"Welcome, Mr. Skywalker. I trust that your classmates will make you feel welcome and stop staring shortly." He raised an eyebrow and looked across the room, passive-aggressively guilting the offending students into facing forward once more. Once roll call was finished, Mr. Mundi stepped over to the lectern to begin a review of algebra concepts from the spring semester before starting new material.
You and Anakin had the same class schedule until lunch. You've never been the "new kid," but you've watched enough cliché movies to know that someone should help him find the cafeteria and offer him a seat. May as well be you...so you caught him on the way out of class.
"Hi!" You chirped as you waved to get his attention and flashed the warm smile from earlier.
"Uh, hi." A slight smile tugged at the corners of his mouth before he cast his eyes back to the floor.
"So your name is Anakin?" [mental facepalm...real smooth]
"Last I checked. And your name is Y/N, right?" at least keeping eye contact again.
You were top of your class, yet the depth of those eyes reduced you to a bumbling idiot. "Uh...yeah! Last I checked," you replied with a soft nervous chuckle. Finally you got your wits about you once more. "Since we've had all the same classes this morning, I thought maybe you'd like a familiar face to show you to the cafeteria."
Without skipping a beat, "Are you asking me out on a date?" he said flatly.
"WHAT?! No, I...I..." You felt your cheeks stain red as your heart recovered from flatlining.
Suddenly, a huge grin flashed across his face. "I kid, I kid. That is nice of you to offer. Lead the way."

"So what brings you to Temple High?" you asked as you and Anakin walked down the hall to the cafeteria. That was the burning question everyone had on their minds. Families stay here for generations, and others leave...but there's not much in your hometown to draw in new folks.
"Oh, uh, my step-dad got a new job teaching over at the junior high campus," Anakin responded as he stared at the class pictures that hung on the wall above the long stretch of lockers.
"Oh neat," you paused, "speaking of dads, that one's mine." His gaze followed your hand as you pointed up. You just happened to be right in front of the class picture from your dad's senior year almost 30 years ago.
"Wow," he said softly, "your family has been here a long time." Too long, you thought. I can't break out soon enough.
"Yeah, I even had a teacher who taught us both - Mr. Yoda. He's reeeeeeeeally old," you said with a giggle.
After a short walk, you were at the cafeteria doors. You brought your lunch, but Anakin didn't, so after showing him where to get in line, you pointed to your table of friends.
"I'll be sitting over there. I'll save you a spot. I mean, if you want...you don't have...you're welcome to sit wherever." Your cheeks reddened as you stumbled over your words.
"Thanks, Y/N," with a smirk and a gentle nod of his head. Your heart skipped a beat with the sound of your name rolling off his tongue. After a small, awkward goodbye wave, you quickly turned toward your table.
Aayla just gave you a knowing smile as your other friends whispered and giggled as you walked over. "Someone has the hots for the new kid!" Kit flashed his classic sh*t-eating grin. Ugh - again with the blushing!
"His name is Anakin, and he seems like a nice guy. I invited him to sit with us," you responded curtly as you blocked the spot next to you with your lunch box.
"Ooooooh! It's about time you started dating someone! Since nobody around here seems good enough for you," Jyn yell-whispered as Anakin walked over with his tray.
If looks could kill, you wouldn't have any more friends. "WOULD YOU STOP IT?! Don't joke like that," recalling Anakin's earlier attempt at shocking humor. As if on cue, he taps you on the shoulder.
"Oh, hey Anakin, I saved you a spot," you announced in a sing-song voice and moved your tote, desperately trying to ignore your friends' snickering. "This is Aayla. She was in our first class this morning. And this is Jyn and Kit."
Anakin sat down with his tray, scanning the eager faces nervously. "Um, hello."
"Where did you move from?" Jyn asked.
"JYN!" This time Aayla was the one to admonish her. Jyn shrugged and mouthed, "what?"
Anakin chuckled through his nose. "It's okay - I expected the questioning. This isn't my first move. Before we came here, we lived in a small town in West Texas. Only for a couple of years, though. I'm glad we didn't stay too long. There was lots of sand. It's irritating and gets everywhere." Nothing can put down roots there, he muttered almost imperceptibly. His eyes dropped to the floor.
Noting Anakin's solemn look, you interjected. "Did you at least have a good view of the mountains while you were there? I flew to El Paso once. That was my favorite part."
"Yes, that was one of the few highlights." He brought his eyes up to softly stare into yours.
Oh, stars.

Oh, stars.
You and Anakin quickly became inseparable, growing from acquaintances to close friends to an "item." Ben and Shmi, Anakin's stepdad and mother, became quite used to your presence in their home, so much so that they would keep your favorite sodas and snacks in stock and you were a regular at family events and dinners. You spent every available moment outside of class and extracurricular activities with him. You were enraptured by Anakin's presence - you felt like you were drowning in his deep blue ocean eyes, but you had no desire to come up for air...
Your obsession with each other left little time for other friends and family. Anakin wasn't very good at making and keeping friends, anyway. He was quick to irritation and tended to lash out when overstimulated. One morning, he came to school with bruises and scrapes on his knuckles after taking out his frustrations on a brick wall.
"Ani, what happened?" you asked worriedly as you took his hands into yours. Anakin refused to make eye contact with you.
"Don't worry about it, [Y/N]."
"Ani..."
"I SAID DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT!" he growled almost menacingly. You jumped back slightly at his tone, and his face immediately softened and his brows scrunched with worry. "[Y/N]...I'm sorry, I...I don't know what's gotten into me."
"It's okay. I am here if you want to talk about it," you murmured softly as you took his unaffected hand to walk to class.
Looking back, you made a bad habit out of overlooking his bouts of anger. He told you that you brought out the best in him, that you could always help him find the good in situations. You mistakenly thought that YOU alone could keep him from derailing. How naïve.

You and Aayla had a falling out after she confronted you about your relationship.
"You are different around him," she said quietly as you both sat on the locker room bench after PE.
"Huh? I don't know what you're talking about. I've never felt more myself," you retorted defensively.
"[Y/N], you can't even speak for yourself anymore. Your calendar revolves around him. I invite you to things and you always have to check with him. You always want to be with him. Or you ask if you can bring him. I miss YOU. And I'm scared for you."
"Scared?"
"Y'all became intense so fast it was like a fire sucking all of the oxygen out of the room. You talk less and less about getting out of this place, which has been your goal since 5th grade, and more about settling down. You deserve better than him. He's your first real romantic relationship - give yourself a chance to explore other options. I don't want to see you lose yourself for someone who wouldn't do the same for you."
You stared at her, jaw slack in disbelief. "I love him."
"But why? Sure, he's cute. But he's jealous and possessive, and even you have commented about his temper. I saw him tower over and yell at you this morning."
Ouch. She got you right where Anakin planted a seed of doubt when he used his stature to intimidate you. Maybe she's right? Maybe we should take a break. Your eyes began to water as you looked up at your friend. When was the last time y'all hung out?
The bell for the end of the school day brought you back to reality and startled you out of your stupor. Anakin was waiting by your car, though this was not as unusual as the look on his face.
"We need to talk," you both said synchronously.

Chapter 4: Turning Point
CW: Unhealthy attachment, budding co-dependency, mentions of war

"We need to talk."
"I...no...you go...." you both started in. You paused and motioned for Anakin to speak first.
He seemed just as unsettled as he was this morning before school. He took a deep breath to steel his nerves. "[Y/N], I joined the National Guard," he blurted out quickly.
You stared at Anakin, mouth agape in shock. No, no, not him, too! He wasn't the first of your circle of friends to enlist. Your high school years coincided with the height of the Iraq war. Some of your friends and family had already been deployed overseas.
"I...I don't understand. You only just turned 17 last week. A minor can't enlist. You're in the middle of your junior year! Why would you do this?" You defeatedly slumped against the body of your car, your legs suddenly unable to support you as your mind raced.
"A minor can enlist early in the National Guard if a parent gives permiss..."
"SHMI SIGNED OFF ON THIS?!" you interrupted. "How could she possibly be okay with this? WE ARE AT WAR."
"Because SHE supports MY decision for what to do with MY life, at least for the next six years of it," he retorted.
You stared blankly at him in return. "Six YEARS? Why would you sign away six YEARS of your life? When your life is really just beginning?"
"It's a way for me to carve my own path. I won't get the scholarships that you will because my grades have suffered from moving around too much. This way, I can pay for college without depending on mom and Ben."
You couldn't argue with the logic, but logic doesn't prevail against emotion. Anakin's voice seemed distant as you replayed your conversation with Aayla in your head. "What was it you wanted to talk about?"
"I think we need a break."
"What?" he stammered. "Because of this?"
"No, because we became too intense too quickly. We are rushing headlong into adulthood, some of us faster than others (as you vaguely gesture his way), and there's still so much to enjoy in the here and now."
"You want to see other people, don't you?!" he snarled.
"No, but your angry tone suggests that maybe I should. You don't own me."
"FINE," he said through gritted teeth and clenched fists. He took in a sharp breath. "Fine. I...I can respect that. I will give you as much time as you need, because I love you."
"You...what?!"
