miguel and conchata are like. your earliest memories of your ma are of her weeping after a fight with your father. you try your best at school and to move up the ladder because dad will beat her if you mess up. one day she stops loving you and at first you don't understand why, but you start searching in the mirror for things that make you look like george to try to make sense of it. you never notice that you have her hair and you have her laugh. the world rips the kindness from both of you; you resent her anger and her mind games but none of it can ever entirely be her fault. part of you (all of you) would forgive her in a heartbeat if she laid her hand in your cheek instead of hitting it.

you didn't turn out great, but you slouch to make yourself smaller, you try not to yell. you won't hit anyone. none of that matters; you tell her you care, and she doesn't believe you. you think she hates you, and she lets you believe it.

you go to mexico to try to be closer to her, but you don't speak much spanish. you buy a ridiculously expensive costume for día de muertos and it returns home with you, largely forgotten until the leash around your neck starts feeling like a noose.

your ma is talking to the man who ruined your life. she says you think that she hates you because you are too much like george—and she says that isn't true.

and your heart stops. she doesn't hate you. she doesn't hate you—maybe she has a hard time showing it but maybe she loves me, my ma loves me, and—

do y’all even think they’d say andre and cal’s names at graduation? do you think other parents would be outraged? would the gabriels and kriegmans even be welcome in the stadium? would cal’s little siblings be able to return to school? or would people avoid both families like the plague?

would their names be in obituaries in the papers? or would they only be plastered on the front covers with horrible words on top of them? cal’s blond hair covered in the word “monster” written in red; andre’s tan skin tainted by the word “killer” in a font bigger than anyone even knew existed.
