i find it funny that one of rachel’s drawings of herself in the afterword that just went up is just fully persephone. is that something she does a lot?

Alright so I've been making it a general rule for myself to like, not harp on Rachel in any way outside of LO as much because frankly the horse is dead now and there's not much left to say outside of what can be analyzed in hindsight. I think despite everything I have to say about her and her work, she still deserves to get away from this nonsense and I don't wanna spend eternity hovering over her shoulder.

But the afterword was posted within the LO series and is clearly meant for readers of LO in the functioning of being an afterword so let's just call it fair game LOL

I will say, on the whole, it does feel very honest and sentimental and I can respect Rachel for taking the time to write out and illustrate her afterword in a way that was personal to both her and her fans. I can understand why she went at it from the angle that she did and I'm not gonna fault her for that.

But there's also something that feels deeply... disingenuous about her approach right from the starting gun. I will say, before I continue, that I'm well aware I am biased towards Rachel as a creator, and I fully acknowledge that I could very well be reading too much into things. This is just my opinion, take it with mountains of salt.

I can get looking back on your own childhood, your past self, whatever, and going "see! it all got better!" because sure! For a lot of creators like Rachel, it must be wild to look back on where they came from and there's a lot of sentimentality on expressing that through an afterword like this where she reflects on where she came from. Though she STILL didn't acknowledge her other comics outside of LO, I can understand if she wants to leave those skeletons in the closet.

But I feel like her drawing herself as a child who's being given an Eisner by her adult self and all that just feels like some gross attempt to disarm any criticism of her because "don't make fun of me, I'm just a sad lonely baby girl!"

She's not a child. Child Rachel didn't grossly misappropriate Greek myth into their own self-indulged vanity project. Child Rachel didn't claim herself a folklorist of a culture's works only to bastardize them completely. Child Rachel didn't create a hostile environment within her fanbase by bullying anyone who she perceived as a threat, sneaking into critical spaces to try and cause trouble, and writing her own clapbacks into her comic. Child Rachel didn't claim to be challenging misogyny and purity culture only to reinforce misogyny and purity culture through her own self-insert baby-virgin-gets-rescued-by-rich-tycoon power fantasy that regularly glorified abuse towards women and the lower class.

30-almost-40-year-old Rachel did though.

At best it comes across as really cringe sentimentality from a Greek-weeb (heh, greeboo) and goes to show how much Rachel inserted herself into Greek myth without ever absorbing its messages or cultural contexts, it was all about her and her feelings as a sad New Zealand girl with dyslexia who thought Persephone's story was about another sad girl being rescued from her "horrible childhood".

At worst it's an active attempt to play on people's heartstrings by drawing herself as a child who people will naturally not want to criticize. I don't want to assume she's doing it intentionally, I really don't want to leave her afterword on a bad foot, as I can definitely understand as both a creator and a person who struggled with learning disabilities in their own childhood how and why she wants to pay homage to her past and where she came from... but let's just say, as someone who's also gotten way too "lost in the sauce" concerning personal self-reflective projects, I think there's a lot to say about how this confirms that Rachel made LO entirely for herself, about herself, without any actual intention to respect the original myths, because she never truly separated them from herself when she was a child. And, in my humble opinion as someone who has Been There with the self-insert OC's and self-reflective angsty plotlines, I can fully attest to the fact that that's not fucking healthy. Even with personal projects, you NEED to learn to get your head out of the sauce, you NEED to learn to objectively separate yourself from the narrative so the story doesn't fall apart under your own hubris and ego, you NEED to learn to draw a line if you want to have any sort of identity as a human being outside of what you make for people. And that's with just normal original stories, this was a story based on Greek myth which doesn't belong to her.

And this goes for a lot of the things she's said and done in the past, so much of her own "sources" even are tethered to things that she read / watched in her childhood and only vaguely remembers, as if she never mentally left her childhood at all, which just... if the point was to highlight her past and the traumas she went through and how they contributed to her present, an Eisner isn't going to validate those experiences. And drawing attention to her past through the lens of her childhood self absolutely 100% does not absolve her of the negative effect her work has had on the modern Greek myth zeitgeist nor the things she's said and done as a 38 year old woman who should absolutely know better.

The community she entered and took from will forever remain changed by her influence and taking, in many ways not for the better. She has the privilege of walking away and never having to think about it again, with all the awards and accolades that were bought for her, the bravado that she built around being a "folklorist" with zero credentials, and the platform she was given over many other creators struggling to even be heard.

That "place" she claims to have now was built entirely on inserting herself into another culture's works and doing nothing but taking, taking, taking, while offering nothing in return but vanity and lip service. That "place" was paid for and brought to you by Webtoons.

I 100% agree with what you said and it’s shitty how Rachel and the fan base is. It’s disgusting and I was like wtf is Persephone doing when Hades and Minthe were in a finalized relationship. And then the other gods not respecting hades when he was in his relationship with Minthe was also shitty. Like they were encouraging and basically setting them up too. None of it was right. I really didn’t like it at all. Also about how she portrays Apollo. Lore Olympus is what got me into Greek Mythology but as I read more the more I learn that Lore Olympus is just not good representation at all and I hate it.

I wish is wasn’t my first impression of Greek Mythology.

A lot of the things Minthe gets criticized for, Persephone is outright celebrated for.

Minthe is into glitzy fashion and expensive dinners and relies on Hades for all her financial help? She's materialistic and vapid and a gold digger taking advantage of Hades. When Persephone does those things? She's a confident go-getter who knows what she deserves and won't accept any less.

Minthe acts shitty and cold to the people around her? She's a cunt who doesn't deserve friends or any sort of empathy whatsoever. Persephone does it? She's a #bossbabe and the person she's snipping at "probably deserved it anyways."

Minthe displays blatant PDA with Hades? She's nasty and gross and disrespectful to the people around her. Persephone does it? The whole realm talks about it and cheers for it, with many of the side characters going so far as to try and hook them up every opportunity they can get.

Minthe acts petty to try and 'get back' at Persephone, she's seen as a petty bitch and even called out on her behavior BY THE CHARACTERS THEMSELVES. Persephone does the EXACT SAME SHIT, and people flat out encourage her.

Minthe sneaks around Hades back to hook up with Thanatos? She's a cheater and doesn't deserve him. Persephone literally flirts with and comes onto Hades when she knows Minthe is with Hades? It's fine, Minthe deserves what's coming to her and Persephone and Hades are 'meant to be'. Never mind the fact that as SOON as Minthe and Hades decided to be in an actual committed relationship, beyond just the terms of their original agreement (which was transactional) Minthe broke it off with Thanatos. What does Persephone do though when she admits to flirting with Hades knowing he's in a relationship? She acknowledges it's not fair to Minthe, but just asks to "slow down". She seems to be more concerned with breaking the terms of her TGOEM agreement than hurting Minthe or participating in an emotional affair.

Point is, Persephone is constantly being given a pass by the narrative, Rachel, and her own fanbase that she's allowed and justified to do whatever she wants, while everyone else "deserves" whatever shitty end of the stick they get so long as they're not "in the way" of Hades and Persephone's relationship. If RS ever swapped out these Persephone moments with Minthe, the narrative would spin it as a horrible, tasteless thing and the fanbase would throw eggs at her. It's wild how the narrative will try to convince us Minthe is the root of all Hades' suffering when, if anything, Minthe is a victim and Hades' relationship with Persephone has many of the same foundations as his relationship with Minthe.

Anyways, this turned into a way longer essay than I planned it to, but seriously, Minthe deserved better, and just because Rachel will bend over backwards to try and paint Minthe as the root of all evil doesn't mean she deserved to be cheated on or turned into a plant; on the flipside, just because Persephone is the main protagonist doesn't mean her actions are any more justifiable than Minthe's. You can't call Minthe a bitch for doing what she did when Persephone is given a free pass to do the same shit all the time. Context doesn't even matter in many of these cases, there is no context that makes it okay to have such double standards and almost blatantly obvious class/racial imbalances in your own narrative that claims to be 'feminist' and is being written for teenage girls.

Stop lecturing Minthe and start holding Persephone accountable.

It's all in Hades' head.

I mean, all of it's centered around his fetishes, right? He's pretty terrible.

And in the original mythos, he kidnapped Persephone and r-ped her.

So what if he's the villain? What if he's incredibly delusional and trying to convince himself that Persephone's life must be so hard and thus it justifies what he did.

And he rewrites the narrative so that everyone agrees with him. And those that do oppose him are, of course, objectively in the wrong.

MIDDLE NAME: KORE

LAST NAME: FLOROS (From Greek φλώρος (floros) meaning "greenfinch", derived from classical Greek χλωρός (chloros) meaning "green" - Taken from Behind the Surname website)

NICKNAMES: Olive Branch, Olive, The mascot, Kore.

AGE: 29,00 (29 years old in human age.)

Personality: Kore is still a bubbly adult but now incredibly tired as well, Kore loves animals, baking, nature and is extremely friendly and outgoing still. She can be best described as an optimist, always seeing things for what they could be and ironically she dislikes pomegranates, Kore doesn't want Demeter to stress because she saw how much Demeter was stressed with taking care of nature and Kore at once when Kore was a child. So she is taking more of the burden of keeping nature in balance to keep Demeter happy and not stressed as much.

APPEARANCE: Kore is 5'7 feet fall and somewhat muscular but still chubby, Kore has short dusty olive greenish hair and dusty olive greenish skin as well. Kore has natural freckles all over her body and Kore is suffering from stress spots (the dark brown spots on her, you can barely see it but it's there.) because she is overworking herself to keep nature in balance back in the mortal realm. She has dark brown eyes like Demeter!

INFORMATION ABOUT THIS REWRITE OF MINE!!

• The ages (I don't know how to explain it properly so I hope you understand my explanation in my rewrite ) - So supernatural deities ages are different than humans, for example a adult 30 year old woman would be just 30 but in deities it would be 30,00. Deities age quicker than humans basically but until their physical forms stop aging, their physical forms will match their ages!!

• Kore stopped aging at 27 years old and not at 19 years old (I always get the ick when I remember that fact in the OG webtoon!)

• Kore is friends with Artemis and lived with her in the God's forest when Demeter allowed her to go to the God's realm for her college, Kore did join The Goddesses of Eternal Maidenhood (or TGOEM for short) but she realized it wasn't for her and left it. Demeter did freak out about that and Kore went no contact for three years until Demeter agreed to go to counseling which Demeter agreed to cause she did realize her behavior was wrong.

• Hades is 40 years old (He ain't a Humbert Humbert clone in my rewrite!!) and Kore married him at the age of 27 years old, they have been together for 2 years and Hades has replased!!

• In my rewrite Hades is a severely depressed man with commitment issues and constantly cheating on his partners not a clone of Humbert Humbert, Persephone meets Hades when she's in her late twenties and stupidly falls in love with Hades who is complete crap. Hades goes to counseling for his issues after realizing that he actually cares for Persephone and becomes healthy/sober but something or someone makes him relapses into his cheating ways again!!

• Demeter and Kore are in counseling because Demeter's behavior and over-sheltering. Demeter was overprotective of Kore for good reasons but it became toxic and unbearing that Kore ran away at 14 which is when she met Artemis her best friend. Demeter didn't want Kore to marry Hades cause he's Zeus's brother but mostly because she knows how Hades is and his issues, Demeter created winter out of grief because she knew Hades will be horrible for Kore and she doesn't want her daughter to deal with a shit man. But she did hide her grief to help Kore and did attend Kore's wedding (she gave Hades the side eye every moment of the wedding when Kore wasn't looking.)

• Kore does have a sever mental breakdown when she finds about Hades relapsing/cheating and she accidentally changed the season to winter killing all the corps of humans which is killing them. Kore's and Demeter's emotions can be overwhelm them which causes their powers to go out of control.

• Kore is going to counseling to stop her workaholic behavior and is allowing Demeter to help her with nature but she is still stressed about the burden of nature and Hades's distant behavior (reminder he cheating now but she doesn't know yet.)

• Why is she greenish olive? - Because Demeter's color palette dusty green and dusty brown in my rewrite but also in the rewrite of mine Demeter made Kore from a flower's root and tree root.

• I made two playlists! One for Persephone and second for Hades and Kore! In the second photo she's confronting Hades about his affair!

Since lore olympus ended weeks ago, I have decided to list the top five worst shit I remember and have saw since I stopped reading

1. The lore olympus apollo because wtf was that storyline

2. PERSEPHONES ENTIRE DESIGN SHE LOOKED LIKE A CHILD

3. I think in season 2 when ares for some reason wanted to kiss persephone (I haven't read lore olympus since like 2021)

4. The ending because apparently it was really bad and all the build up was for nothing

5. WHY APOLLO WANTED PERSEPHONE AND ZEUS THEN BANISHING HER (Like huh!?)

I hate lore olympus after I realised how problematic it is, especially with everything it had in the story, obviously these are just my opinions on the worst things and I haven't read it since 2021 but from stuff online I saw the ending apparently was bad anyways this was just some fun post to make because yk I barely post anyways byeeee

If i hated lore olympus i can promise you that i wouldn’t bother spending time to make a spread reviewing it in the first place. i love the art style and the original concept behind it but that doesn’t mean i won’t be critical about some ways it has been executed

The only problem I had with your review of Lore was your take on her big boobs. I’ve had big boobs since middle school (thanks no thanks puberty ugh) and while it is an artistic choice it’s also normal to have big boobs and be young? Idk if that’s what you were saying or not and this isn’t a criticism, just saying

my problem isn’t really that she HAS big tits, one of them is that we get a lot of unnecessary panels kind of zooming in on them to the point where it feels that as a reader you’re leering at her. it feels even more concerning when we see persephone looking uncomfortable in her clothes (like at the party at the beginning) and we just gets shots of her boobs. combine that to the fact that nearly every male god so far (hades, apollo, zeus come to mind) has made comments about her body but also see her as childish/an object/a pawn that can be used it just doesn’t feel right?? it feels like she’s just being objectified.

what really makes me uncomfortable is how persephone is characterised as a really naive and young goddess in all this and no one seems to think it’s wrong to talk about her like this. in fact the only person who momentarily does is hades and that makes him the good guy bc he actually has to stop and think abt it for a second, even though he goes straight back to ignoring that afterwards. (with how he’s realising he knows nothing about her though maybe he’s starting to see her more as an individual than just a really pretty ass so i’m still hopeful).

i really hate how characters will bring up her age and say persephone is so young and then right after go back to ogling her big old booty like what??? and smythe doesn’t really show us the readers that this is a Bad Thing bc after any self reflection from the characters (mostly hades) abt how it’s wrong to just look at her this way is just brushed off later with more banter abt how sexy she is later. maybe this will change later but maybe it might not.

so really anon you’re right, there’s nothing wrong with her having massive boobs and being so young, it’s just that she’s characterised as a pretty vulnerable child who is standing on her own for the first time but also sexualised so much you can’t tell whether she supposed to be some kind of femme fatale instead. if persephone was written as a goddess who’s comfortable in her own body i wouldn’t have as much of an issue about this, but that’s really not the case.

that’s what comes to mind at first but there’s more i could add if you’d like

by having hera the goddess of marriage have a decades-long affair with her brother-in-law, it makes it pretty obvious that lore olympus is only very VERY loosely based on actual greek mythology. i wouldn’t even call it a modern retelling, it’s more of the author using the names of gods but they’re all her own characters. i dont think that’s a bad thing, it actually means that the story can go in any direction really and the story arc could get really interesting - although persephone and hades probably have to end up together at the end bc that seems to be the only detail smythe is keeping.

personally what i’d love to see is lore olympus showing when persephone and hades ultimately get together that they’re relationship really isn’t something to aspire to and that in some ways it’s even toxic. maybe it’ll work out maybe it won’t but it would be interesting to see. i very much doubt the story will go in this direction but still.

does anyone else feel like the pacing of Lore Olympus is kinda slow?

in the last update literally all that happened was hades and persephone went to his office, hades rejected minthe and thanatos realised he’s fucked. i feel like lately all the episodes have been ending on cliffhangers (which isn’t always a bad thing but it gets repetitive really quickly when it doesn’t feel like much happened in the episode) and it’s a little frustrating.

i will say tho, that i’m enjoying the art style much more now, persephone looks much older than before so the weird father-daughter dynamic isn’t as uncomfortable as i found it before and persephone just seems more mature than before

how? is the plot moving even slower?? than before??

except for a very short meeting amongst the olympians and some fan service, what even happened in this episode??
