To Bring A Merman Home

So part three of howeverthefuck many of this weird mermaid au brought to you in part by @dazzling-feats-of-pugilism because they asked. Hope you all enjoy! Part 1  Part 2  Julian did his best not to melt but the fingers carding themselves through his hair felt like heaven. He sighed in both relief and exasperation.

He shouldn’t be enjoying this as much as he was or even letting it happen for that matter. His entire world has been flipped by one merman and his incessant search of devotion. However, his thigh was soft under his cheek and his touch was like magic. Andrico smelled like vetiver and the sea and Julian was hard pressed not to love it.

He groaned. He was fucked. How was he going to explain this to his friends, to Mazelinka? To Pasha? Oh hey everyone I’m back! I went halfway across the world for work and I brought back souvenirs! Some figurines, some postcards, and uh… oh right a husband!

Yes. A husband.

As it was, Andrico was not lying about knowing a guy. When they reached the docks of a large seaside town, the merman directed them to the town’s magistrate, with only the instructions “tell him Drico sent you”. While frustratingly vague, it worked like a charm. After a quick explanation of the situation, Monsieur Devon was able to cook up some documents (and thankfully some clothes) in less than an hour. A passport, birth certificate, and… a marriage license. Julian remembered his look of horror and the Ayitians twin looks of bemusement.

“What were you expecting?” Jean-Marc snorted. “You’ve pledged your devotion. You’re just as good as married.”

Just as good as married. His new wedding band, gifted by the magistrate, felt like it weighed a hundred pounds. It was a constant presence for the full 18 hours it took him to get back to Vesuvia, a golden reminder that sometimes he talked too goddamn much.

He is married (sort of). With a husband (technically).

“Juju, are you sleepy? Do you want me to run you a bath? I know how to work a faucet or at least I think I do…”

Andrico’s smooth voice broke him out of his thoughts. Blinking a few times to reorient himself, Julian shook his head no.

“It’s fine, I can do it myself.”

I don’t want to owe you any favors rested heavily on his tongue. Andrico chuckled lightly.

“It is no problem cheri, I want to take care of you.”

Julian could feel himself start to blush. “It is wholly unnecessary-”

“Julian,” Andrico interrupted. “It’s fine. This is… this is how this works. You’ve pledged your devotion and in accepting it, I’ve pledged mine. Let me do this.”

All Julian could do was nod as he lifted himself so Andrico could get up. His thoughts were in an even bigger jumble as he watched the merman head to the bathroom.

He was devoted.

What does that even mean? Julian thought. Was Andrico bound in the same strange magic that he was? How far did his devotion go? Was he- was he resentful of it? He knew that the merman chose to accept his “pledge” but was he prepared to leave his home behind because of it? What of his family? Does he even have a family?

“Juju I think I figured it out,” Andrico called out in excitement. “Come take a bath!”

Julian got up slowly. He supposed he could puzzle it out after his bath. The thought of the warm water was calming. For the first time in 18 hours he was going to relax.

Splash.

“Dear goddesses Juju, your tub is so big! It looks like it will fit the both of us. Let’s take a bath together!”

Or maybe not.
