How do you keep the faces so accurate? Im trying to draw comics but i cant draw faces at other angles and with other expressions without it looking weird 😭

So I’ll be honest, I think I’m trash at drawing likenesses/ accurate faces. But really no artist thinks they’re good at anything. We’re all just trying our best. ANYWAY I’ll do my best to answer!

The short answer is: Referances

The long answer is: a lot of references

My art is in the unique little area of mostly being fan art, which means most of the lovely folks I draw are real people. On top of that they’re usually always celebrities that have a billion photos of them so I can usually find almost any reference I need for a face. For my Mando comics I literally had an album of over 60 pictures that were just Pedro’s face from different angles. Sigh, the things I do for art.

Here’s some examples of me just using a reference directly.

(I’m going through a David Harbour phase again, I know. 10/10 recommend drawing his face)

It’s hard to just draw a face from imagination sometimes. It’s a bunch of weird shapes that are very difficult to get accurate, but how can you draw it the way you want if you don’t have something to go off of? Ya know what I’m saying? Not everything can just start purely from imagination, and that’s okay. If you’re struggling with something, go find something to help you. Anyone who’s followed me for a while know just how many reference pictures I take of myself (and my husband sometimes) alone. It helps me to put myself in the scene or see how my face makes whatever expression I wanna draw, then apply it to whatever character I’m drawing. References on references man.

Here’s some examples of that!

I know this isn’t very technical but I just wanted to show what I do. I’ve drawn a lot of faces from a lot of angles so I’m sure part of this is the understanding that comes with hours of practice.

BUT

If you’d like to see like a step by step of me drawing someone’s face just let me know. I’d be more than happy to show it! (It’s kinda a mess)

Hope this helped a little!

i have a few resources i look to consistently but i'm gonna plug anatomy for sculptors as One Of The Most Useful. great if you're a 3D artist, INVALUABLE if you're a 2D artist. gives you turnarounds of specific limbs/fiddly body parts like ears. great especially if you're referencing a photo and start looking at an individual part like 'wait, what the hell is going on in there'
