When I was about 20, I think, I came across the concept of "walk ins." Not sure anyone believes in those anymore but at the time I stumbled on an internet community of people who believed that they were aliens who had walked in and possessed a human body. This felt very fitting to me; it certainly explained why I couldn't understand or relate to other humans. I started a listserv (bet you've never heard of those, eh, sonny?) and got quite a few members. We were, no doubt, all neurodivergent, perhaps in different ways, but I bet most were on the spectrum. The whole concept of autism was new to most ordinary people back then. There was Rainman and that was it. If you weren't like Rainman you weren't autistic; it never would even enter your mind to consider it
