My thoughts about the Astro Boy 2003 series
(Without major spoilers of course :) )
Welp, i just finished the 2003 Astro Boy series and it feels appropriate that i share my thoughts about it, much like I did with the 1980 series.
So, this is a series that I DEFINITELY liked. The animation is great, the characters are amazing and the series made me into a sobbing mess. Now, there are issues I have with the series, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. Fuck, there's much more good than bad about the series! But what are my issues about the series then?
Well, let's start with my smallest issue which is the animation. Now, the character animation? It's gorgeous, it's expressive, the character designs look great, I have nothing bad to say in the character department. I was mainly bothered by the background animation and like, vehicles, since they are animated in CGI. Now, i find it actually really cool that certain background elements actually look like a normal painted background until they move. Like that shit impressed me. But It's just something I personally don't like. I was never a fan of blending 2D and 3D animation myself but it doesn't mean it's anything bad. It probably has it's fans, I just personally think it's distracting.
Now, my other issue might seem weird, but hear me out. I personally feel, the series was too afraid to kill off it's characters. Now, I wasn't hoping for like, full on bloodshed where characters died every single episode (for example, Denkou doesn't deserve to die at all, keep that boi alive), but it would be much more impactful in other arcs (the Pluto arc and Atlas arc just to name a few). And even when someone was killed off, they were usually brought back which... Kinda feels like a cop out imo. I actually liked the 1980 series more in that regard, because it wasn't afraid to kill characters off.
BUT
That does not mean the series can't be emotional. God knows I fucking bawled during the last two episodes and some others as well. Fuck, the ending of the series is actually REALLY good and i feel it was worth digging through all the filler.
Also uh small nitpick at the end, but I kinda find it a bit weird they did the Tenma and Tobio emotional stuff only in the beginning and at the end, I honestly thought there would be more of it in the middle- it's not a HUGE deal, I just find it weird XD
So, to conclude, I believe Astro Boy 2003 is well worth your watch. It's emotional, it's WHOLESOME AS FUCK seriously, how were they able to pack so much WHOLESOME into the series
(btw whoever came up with the idea of having Ochan be Astro's and Uran's dad should get like 10 raises that shit melt my heart)
Sooo, since I'm done with the two series, I'll think about what to watch next. Maybe I'll watch the Astro Boy movie. Or maybe even I'll watch the 1960 series 👀
