His hand fell to Chris’s hair and lightly scratched at his scalp. He was going to have to figure out how to get through the rest of the day without getting into an argument with Shannon-because there was definitely going to be an argument. Chris would be a good distraction for a while, but he would not be there the entire time.
“Chris,” she started. “-don’t you have some things to show your dad?”
And there went the buffer he had hoped to keep in place between them. He smiled after his son as he headed back towards his bedroom, probably to grab whatever Shannon was referencing.
“What are you doing here, Eddie?” she hissed and he had to suppress a flinch. Her scent had turned acrid, burning his sensitive nose. “And why am I just now finding out that you’re home?”

And that was not getting into the fact that he had learned how to get a second phone number on some app that he had used solely for that reason.
“Eddie.”
The sharpness of his partner’s voice broke through the spiral he had fallen into. “Buck?”
“If you’re going to do this just sitting in the parking lot, maybe we should reschedule?”
“No!” he protested, voice harsh. He took a deep breath to try and settle himself a little bit. “No, I’m okay. I told Frank I’d do it and I was looking forward to it until I got in my head.”

“That’s right, Chris. No cookies until after we have pizza,” Eddie agreed. “And you aren’t staying up late tonight just because we have company either.”
“But dad,” he whined, his grin still blinding in its intensity. Obviously he was not actually upset about being told that he could not stay up late. Well, either that or he knew he would be able to convince his dad differently later.
Eddie smiled at him. “Do you want to take Buck into the living room and start choosing a movie?”
Chris turned that weapon of a smile on Buck and pointed towards the arch that Eddie was standing in. “It’s just through there, Buck.” Then he turned kind of shy. “Or I can give you a tour first and then we can choose a movie?”

“I’m sure, Hen. He’s been great about everything with Chris. No need to worry,” he said, holding eye contact and trying to lightly broadcast his certainty. It was a lot harder to do since he had never practiced it before despite being online. Outside of when he was home, he still kept his shields pulled as highly as he always had.
“As long as you’re sure,” she agreed, patting his knee. He could almost feel how skeptical she was, but he was going to avoid calling her out on it. There was no reason to out himself as online just because of something like this. They had agreed that he was going to train more, possibly join Buck and the person he had met on the spirit plane there, but he felt a little antsy now that he was trying to do a little more with his abilities.
He watched as she got up and took a different seat, opening the book in her hand that he had just noticed. Based on that, he had a feeling he would be defending them against a lot of concern from those on shift. Maybe he should talk to Buck and see if he could get him to, not relax his shield, but maybe let his own emotions leak out a little bit more?

“I’m actually starting the Academy in a couple of months,” Eddie said quietly. “It’d be kind of nice to talk to someone who’s been through it. And I can ask you about neighborhoods for any other houses I consider.”

“Where are we meeting them again?” Eddie asked, climbing into the passenger seat of Buck’s Jeep. They had just climbed back in after dropping Chris off at Abuela’s for the afternoon. She had been complaining about needing a bit more time with her great-grandson, and they were not about to tell her that she could not have him for part of the weekend. It also let them have a few hours to spend with the new friends that they had made at the gym the week before.
“It’s just a little restaurant not far from the gym, Eddie. They said it’s pretty good and they’ve been going there for a while. The only thing they said to avoid was the breakfast sandwiches that had eggs—something about the egg not being good. We’re just going to park at the gym and walk over. There’s only like a block between them and I know you don’t really mind walking a little bit.”

“Who’s got you checking your phone like that, Buck?” Hen asked with a smile.
“Oh, I just made a new, uh, friend.”
“And where’d you meet this friend?” Chimney asked as he walked past the table on his way to the kitchen. Bobby had cooked again and they were all trying to get some lunch before the alarm went off again. The alfredo was always amazing, so it was usually gone pretty quickly if they did not have to abandon it in the middle of eating.
“At the bar,” he answered, pausing to shove another bite in his mouth and chew it. He had been getting in trouble for talking with his mouth full the last couple of times he had been over to Eddie’s since he was trying to teach Chris not to do so either. Eddie was really pushing the whole being a good role model for him, so Buck was having to behave better himself so as to not undermine the parenting he was doing.
And, of course, the alarm had to go off right then, so he never quite finished his thought.

“It’s a neat solution,” Evan said, leaning heavily into Eddie’s shoulder after they had left the restaurant and headed into a nearby park. They were sitting at the end of a short dock, shoes and socks to the side, as their feet played in the water. It was a warm evening, as most of them were, so it felt nice.
“It’s just a little sudden,” he responded, head tipping slightly to rest on top of the omega’s. “Just this morning I was still scrambling to get some kind of answers and we were planning our second date. Now we’re getting married in a few days, Shannon’s keeping the baby, and, well, I’m just a little overwhelmed.”
Evan crooned at him quietly in an attempt to soothe. “It’s a little fast,” he conceded. “And I don’t really know why you would agree."

“Kid,” Bobby sighed. Buck was almost bouncing in place with all the energy he had and the nerves he was experiencing. “Go find someone and see if they’ll let you help with the drills they’re running.”
He shot a grin at his captain. “Thanks, Bobby.”
Watching as he was across the area like a shot and the surprise that rippled through the soon-to-be probationary firefighters, he shook his head. That kid had more energy in one hand than the rest of his shift combined.
“The meeting I requested was confirmed?” he asked, turning back to the instructor he had been talking to before Buck’s fidgeting had gotten too distracting.
“Yes. He agreed to meet with you,” she confirmed. “He’s already had a couple of others, and Station 6 has definitely pushed hard to have him assigned there.”
“Thanks for the warning, Laura."

“God, I don’t know why we even agreed to adopt you! We should have just said we would, gotten the bone marrow we needed, and left you with my niece!”
Evan watched on as the woman that he had always known as his mother kept screaming at him.

From the top of the stairs, he could see that he was where he expected him to be, so he headed down the stairs and stood behind him for a moment, observing. Buck knew exactly what needed to be done, of course, and had no need for supervision any longer. If he really wanted to admit it, then he would say that Buck had never needed it when it came to tool maintenance. He had always been thorough about checking them over, both before using them when they were on a call and after finishing with them-either back at the station or still on scene if he was no longer needed and was just packing up.
“Buck,” he began. “Do you have a moment?”
He looked back over his shoulder to guage how upset he was. At seeing a clear expression on Bobby’s face, he said, “I’ve just got a few left to check and then some sharpening to do. What do you need?”
“I’m sure Eddie told you about his suspension.”

"Obviously we’re getting married, but do you also want to mate whenever my next heat is?”
Eddie tensed a bit—another thing that he had not considered. There was going to be a whole list of those, he was sure.
A purr rumbled from Evan’s chest at the change in his fiance’s posture and scent. “It’s a while off still, Eddie. Nothing to panic over. We have months, at least, before it comes around again.”
“I thought you had heats twice a year?”
He shrugged as well as he could, not wanting to really move that much since he had gotten so comfortable. “It’s kind of like going through puberty. You know how your ruts were unpredictable for a couple of years?” At Eddie’s confirming nod against his hair, he continued, “Well, I only presented about a year ago. So far I’ve had two—my first one that showed I was an omega and one just a couple of months ago.”
“But, technically, you could have one next week.”
“Yeah, I could,” he admitted.

“Well, now everyone thinks we have two dogs, if they can see into the backyard anyway. One of them might be nosy enough to try, but they don’t really share much of a boundary with us,” Eddie said, gesturing vaguely toward the corner opposite where they were standing. With how high the fence was and the fact that Eddie had a couple of fruit trees there, Buck could see why he would be confident in saying that they were unlikely to be able to tell. There was little in the way of area that they would be able to see through.
“Bear is very happy to play fetch, and Chris really seems to be having a good time with it.” He nodded back towards the house. “You want to go inside, and we can work a little bit more on getting you some filters instead of just shields?”
He sighed heavily. Almost whining, much like his spirit guide could, he asked, “Do we have to?”
“Well, no, of course not. But you really do need to learn how to do more than shield, Eddie. You don’t want to lose control.”
It took a long moment, but then he turned back to the house. “Fine. I don’t need to bring everybody around if I had an empathic event.”
