I'd like to make a case for it being the exact opposite. Demetrius is the one to go home on break, which suggests that he cares for his family more than his studies. I think that "Don't get your hopes up" is a big brother trying to protect the little one from heartbreak. Because this family deserves a little softness, some mutual support before their lives fall apart.
