Cherry Magic Thailand just floored me, y’all.

First of all

I may never recover from this secret smile. But above and beyond Tay Tawan’s beauty, this adaptation did so many things right:

Achi is more subdued sad than hyperactive self deprecating

The humor is pitched less zany and more within the realm of recognizable human behavior

As a result the relationships feel more genuine and less like joke set ups

They did a phenomenal job casting for all the roles

They’ve expanded the story in smart ways that fill in gaps, like Jinta finding the stray cat, and allow them to demonstrate the differences from the Japanese version, like Rock starting new with Achi orienting him

There is palpable physical chemistry between Achi and Karan and Achi is allowed to be more aware of it

As a result of removing the frantic energy around Achi’s character, he’s able to connect more fully with others and be a bit more emotionally perceptive

The swoon factor here is so high, I was having heart palpitations every time Karan appeared

Now I don’t want this to come across as taking digs at the Japanese version—that’s a great show in a style that only the Japanese do really well, which was my main concern about this adaptation. I needed to see them adjust the tone and style to fit better with Thailand’s strengths, and that’s exactly what they did here. New and Tay are fantastic in these roles and it’s all been recalibrated to suit them well. I’m so in!

Cherry Magic TH Ep 1 Stray Thoughts

I'm excited to see Tay and New work together again, and glad they were selected as the ones to explore what GMMTV BL looks like between adults. I had some issues with the way the Japanese adaptation approached sex AND intimacy, so I'm hoping this one handles that differently.

I kinda like Newwie's hair, and I like the way they're contextualizing Achi's economic state.

Oh, good. We're keeping the bit where Adachi/Achibus bad at elevators.

Not surprised we're getting Japanese language and characters since this is a collaboration between GMMTV and TV Asahi.

I'm glad this show knows that Tay is a not-so-secret luxurious bitch.

Well, this gentleman from the Japanese office seems kind.

I like how much internal monologue we're getting from Achi before the magic starts.

GMMTV has asked me to believe that Newwie is a virgin twice within a year. This is a tall ask.

His first interaction with the power is being judged by a monk! Lol

Newwie has really improved over the years. He was really stiff in the beginning.

I like that Achi is hearing people think kind things about him as well, especially this senior.

Now why are they making Achi bring cake to Karan on Achi's own birthday? What do they know, and are they meddling?

Ah, Karan ordered it. They are facilitators!

I like Jinta. They ported the essence of Tsuge well with him.

That cat is so stressed. Cats are terrible actors.

Oh right! They cast Mark as the Thai version of Minato.

Okay, I like the way they're modulating the office dynamics for Thailand. The bit waiting for the boss to leave was good.

I kinda like the removal of Adachi's desk mats and having Achi stay late so Rock can meet his partner.

Oh wow we're getting to the overnight condo stay in the first episode.

Very glad Cherry Magic original means they're required to incorporate rain into the narrative. Also seems like they used the Sky train because Adachi had transportation struggles because of the schedule.

I lost it during the fantasy bit where Tay has to lower Newwie's big ass onto a bed.

Newwie looks great when he's wet and tired.

Oh my god they kept the pajamas moment!

Okay, I really loved this so far! This kept all of the things about the characters that I thought were really important while attuning them for the local taste. Really solid first episode. I'm having a lot of fun.

Cherry Magic Thailand is doing so many things so correctly.

Integrating Japan into the adaptation, acknowledging the original and giving it the shoutout it deserves, and more importantly, bridging the cultural gaps that might be too hard to translate, like Japan's workplace hierarchy and culture

Filling in with scenes that doesn't detract or deviate from the original too much, and yet add depth to the existing narrative. The dinner meetup scene with Aachi and Jinta was already excellent, but then I watched Jinta walk into an alley and have an half-hearted argument with a stray cat, which he then took home. I was squealing, and not just because I got to meet the cute cat early. They're taking the off-screen moments in the original version and bringing them forward. This opens the show up to explore uncovered ground, and can add to Karan and Aachi's dynamics later.

We already knew Thailand is not gonna hold back on physical intimacy, but I did not expect Karan to lean in and almost kiss Aachi's mole! IN EPISODE ONE! I was screaming, kicking my feet and altogether losing my little mind!

Tay Tawan is so pretty he hurts my eyes, and I still won't look away. Newwie's physical comedy serves Aachi well, but he is also good at adding depth to Aachi's interiority in the quieter moments. Sing Harit, my beloved, is back on my screen and so fucking funny. Jinta might be the version of Tsuge I finally love, dialled down enough to feel human yet still weird enough to feel wacky and fun.

So.

Can y'all tell I fucking loved the episode?

I think the worst part is that I'm not surprised and I'm wondering how this is going to go for the rest of the Japanese-owned dramas and material they're creating.. @absolutebl @blmpff @sparklyeyedhimbo @respectthepetty Ah, international copyright law.

randomly my favorite thing about this specific kiss is that Karan is checking in on Achi for the second time over the course of a couple minutes. like in addition to stopping to observe the beauty inherent in having Achi beneath him, I think he's looking for signs of anxiety or discomfort. but Achi looks near euphoric and is following after Karan's lips, so Karan continues onward.
