the contrast between emily and reid in 2x17 and 3x03 has me on the floor.

A dark-haired woman aims a concerned expression at a man out-of-focus in the foreground, only the back of his head visible. The background is blurry. The subtitle at the bottom of the image reads: "But what do you remember about your father?"

The woman tilts her head to the right. The subtitles at the bottom of the image read:
-"What do you mean?"
and
-"He gave you ten years before he left."

he listens this time. he doesn't get too defensive, (just normal reid defensive. baby steps). and then we have emily bringing up his dad, specifically information that we haven't heard before (that he's blocked out most of his memories of him), which implies that reid has opened up to her about it offscreen. to me, that also suggests it was in a way he hasn't with the rest of the team.

(if i had to guess at how that went down: sometime post 2x18 reid apologised to emily for the way he treated her, and brought up his abandonment issues as being part of the reason. then either one thing led to another and he was opening up about it, or emily asked him about it later and he told her, maybe because he felt like he owed her honesty after reacting to her concern with such hostility)

this probably isnt very coherent and i might come back to it later but the development of their friendship is so so important to me.

self rb emily prentiss spencer reid emily & reid not fic criminal minds criminal minds s03e03 criminal minds 3x3 scared to death <- my prev tags like ive said before i think reid apologises to emily when he reaches the “amends” steps of NA but i dont think he was attending NA between 2x18 and 3x03 and even if he was i dont know how fast people normally achieve those steps so just to clarify: my hc isnt “reid treats emily poorly and then first apologises when he hits steps 8 and 9 of NA” but “reid first apologises to emily sometime after 2x18 and then apologises again after he hits steps 8 and 9 but this time explicitly saying he was using at the time while the first time he apologises he's much more vague—like “ive been dealing with a lot and i took it out on you” if that makes sense
