series summary: you are a college student working at a daycare full time during your summer break, and you have grown especially fond of one of the toddlers in your class, lincoln rogers. you are certainly not expecting to develop such a huge crush on his dad steve when you meet him for the first time, but you can’t help but be attracted to the businessman– despite the fact that he’s married. however, as intelligent and mature as steve comes across, he has a few secrets behind his marriage- one in particular he may never be able to make up for.

It was 6:05 PM and Steve had still not shown up, despite the daycare technically closing at 6. It was not too rare for some parents to run late, especially with rush hour traffic, and so you were not too worried. It wasn’t like you ever got to leave right at 6 anyways, considering you had to clean up and shut down the room.
It was only you and Linc in the room; Stephanie and the other children had left. The only people in the building were you and the director of the center, who was really only still there because she locked up the place after everyone was gone. Linc was starting to get fussy; his mother normally picked him up at five, and it was clear that the extra hour of being there was tiring him, especially after having seen every other child leave with their mothers and fathers. He was currently snuggled up to you on your lap as you sat against some pillows in the little cozy “library” area of the room, holding onto you tight with his head buried in your chest, whimpering every now and then while simultaneously dozing off.

You could not be more excited as you sat on the rug of the toddler classroom with Linc, waiting for Steve to come pick up. The boy was happily stacking some of the big, soft blocks on top of each other to form a tower, abruptly knocking it over with a swift movement of his hand while maniacally laughing, then starting all over again. Your heart felt full from watching him and from knowing that you and Steve were about to set up your first date. Well, perhaps it was a little more casual than a date, but you still preferred to call it that considering he had confessed his own feelings for you, too.
However, when he and Tiana walked into the room together holding hands, your mouth almost dropped open.

While he was laughing and enjoying his beer with his friends, Peter couldn’t help but continuously look towards the door, hoping you would come soon.
He was truly alright with you only wanting friendship and nothing more for the time being; of course he had been disappointed, but he had always been a sweet and considerate guy. He could appreciate friendship unlike most guys in his age range, he wasn’t the type to insist a girl date or sleep with him. Besides, if you were to date him someday, you would most certainly be worth the wait in his opinion. Still, he would remind himself that he couldn’t simply expect that or that he should keep his hopes up. He got the feeling that there was something else in the picture that you weren’t telling him about, perhaps the main reason as to why you weren’t quite ready to be with him.

Steve let out a breath, trying to calm down whilst pinching his nose. His annoyance was building up as his advisers kept talking over one another. Finally, the noise became too much.
“If anyone has an idea about how to fix this, I’d appreciate it if they made it known. Otherwise, if all of you just want to argue like chattering monkeys, please leave.” He looked down the long table, eyes hard. Everyone had effectively stopped talking, but no one spoke up either. Steve huffed again, frown on his face. Sometimes, he felt like he would just perpetually frown as long as he ruled this kingdom.
Something poked his legs, making him look down. He was shocked at the sight of his four-year-old daughter looking up at him with eyes almost identical to his. Her brown bangs tickled her eyelashes as she blinked, wrapping her arms around his leg.
Steve cleared his throat, looking up. He could already feel his annoyance ebb away as little hands tugged at his pants.
“You all are dismissed.”
“But Your Majesty,” a man five spaces down spoke. “We are far from a solution. We haven’t even-”
“Well, you seem to be giving me no good alternatives. I’ll have to think and get back to you on the plan of action myself. Also-” He saw surprised faces when a curly head appeared from under the table and propped herself on Steve’s lap. “-I’m afraid we’ve been infiltrated.”
Some people laughed, some just shifted and smiled. Then everyone started to leave. Steve smiled as his daughter nuzzled her face into his neck, making herself comfortable. He leaned back, still smiling, and wrapped his arms around her.
