Swallowing, she accepts the call and hits the speaker button while simultaneously pausing her fourth-in-a-row rerun episode of Project Runway.
“Hey,” she says into the room and the mic of her phone.
“Hey,” Yoongi’s voice comes through the speaker, his deep voice slightly muffled from the terrible phone service she gets. “How are you doing?”
She clears her throat and answers, “Well, I just ate three packets of Annie’s gummy bunnies for dinner, so that probably answers your question.”
“That bad, huh?” he asks. She’s silent, and she hears him sigh over the increasing crackle of a poor-quality phone call. “Mina, I wish you’d talk to me.”
Her laugh comes out strangled and she looks up at the ceiling of her apartment. “I just… I feel like I’ve said everything I can say. At least without repeating myself, you know?”
“I know you – repeating–”
“–Yoongi, I’m sorry, I can’t hear shit again, you know my service is so bad. Text me?”
“No, I hate – about stuff like thi – coming over, okay?”
He either ends the call before she can answer or it drops altogether and Mina lets out an ugh. She contemplates a quick shower before he gets to her place–she’ll have time. She knows for certain he’ll pick up food first, unsatisfied with her sugar-and-gelatin dinner. Her hair is just in need of a wash, and while her face was clean and dewy with what felt like a thirty-step skincare routine, she knew her dark circles were more purpled than usual and her skin-tone was looking a bit on the sallow side.

Jimin looks uncomfortable, his brows furrowed and his lips quivering like he’s trying to hold something back. He’s looking everywhere but at Mina as she watches him struggle through the mirror, her hands on her hips where she can feel her tights starting to run where she yanked them up over her leotard this morning.
“Just say it, Chim,” she says finally, having grown impatient.
That’s all it takes for him to finally look back at her in the mirror, no longer fidgeting, but staring with a gentle, yet firm expression.
“I don’t know why you’re still working at the college,” he tells her and her chin recedes into her neck, taken aback, though she recovers quickly.
“I love the kids.”
Jimin nods. “I know you do. But you have to do something for yourself instead of other people. It’s okay to be selfish sometimes.” When he pauses, his face breaks out into a blinding smile, his eyes turning to endearing crescents. “Plus, it wouldn’t be all for yourself. I’d love to have you here, and I know Hobi would, too. And you’d still get to work with kids.”

For his entire life, Yoongi had been nothing if not determined.
One could go on a tangent of how he got himself through college off his own labor, and starting his own record label through a near-crippling depression and without the support of his family (though now that it’s all said and done, it’s funny how people suddenly care about you again once they see your success). And while Yoongi chose to remain silent about his past, if pressed, he’d admit it were true. Yoongi’s success at the ripe age of 26 had to be credited to none other than his own hard work and determination. (Okay, he’d also be sure to mention Mina and Namjoon.)
That being said, it isn’t surprising to mention once he’d realized he and his college best friend were in love with one another, he became determined to make it come to fruition. In the end, he hadn’t needed to plan out a speech to give Mina; all he’d done was watch her practice in the smaller dance studio at their university, and when she’d finished, he spoke very plainly:
“When I watch you dance, it makes me wish even more that we were together.”

Day One
Eyes open from some blank dream, a car alarm blares. Mina rolls over, too hot and too cold at the same time, shutting her eyes in hopes of drifting off again.
Yoongi, she thinks, cheek against her pillow, hit with a pang of something unplaceable, because after all, it’s hard for her to label any feeling.
Except panic.
Her eyes snap open and she fumbles for her phone–which has died in the night, how convenient–and she hastily plugs it in before fighting with the comforter that has managed to wrap itself between her legs and around her, and shoots out of bed to at least brush her teeth and put on some semblance of acceptable clothing.
By the time the fuzz of her teeth is gone and her university’s College of Science and Math Science Rocks! shirt is on along with her jeans and flats, her phone is at a measly 2% but enough for her to see all hope is not lost–
She’s missed her chance to catch the bus, and she’ll have to pay for parking on campus (which is bullshit, why do faculty and staff have to pay for fucking parking), but if she slathers on her under-eye concealer in the car while inhaling an un-toasted, dry slice of bread, she’ll make it to work just in time.

Yoongi sighs and presses his face against her apartment door, his eyes slipping closed, the knowledge she isn’t going to answer pushing forward in his mind. He takes another breath and decides fuck it and lets himself in. If she’s not home, he’ll leave, but if she’s there…
He swallows, shutting the door behind him and slips off his shoes.
The lights are off, a dim gray cast upon the living space and he moves across the room to peek into her bedroom. It’s darker in there, but he can spy the Mina-shaped lump on her bed. His heart thuds dully, deep in his chest at the sight of her sleeping, and he wonders how long she’s been out.

It tears him up to watch her push the noodles around with her chopsticks, head perched in her opposite hand, propped up on the table. How the fuck did she help him? What did she do to pull him out of it, or at least give him a damn good floatation device?
“Babe–sorry–Mina, you need to eat,” he says.
“I don’t have an appetite. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have agreed to come to dinner with you,” she says.
He lets her words seep into him and he frowns.

“Jesus, are temperatures in public buildings always arctic when it’s hot outside, or is it just a Texas thing?” Jeongguk asks, rubbing at his arms as he shifts in his seat in the university office he works in.
“It’s a Texas thing,” Mina responds, passing him a stack of letters to be folded and stuffed into envelopes. “Well, I think it is. I don’t visit other southern states.”
“These have to be done by hand?” he asks, looking at the mountain of papers to fold.
“No, Gguk, with your eyes,” Malika says from where she’s leaning against the front desk, wasting time before her next appointment.
Mina smirks and looks back at Jeongguk. “Aren’t you a senior?” He nods and she continues. “Then, you’ve been in Texas long enough to know to bring a sweater when you go pretty much anywhere. But, I’ll take pity on you; I have a blanket in my office if you need it.”
Jeongguk’s eyes light up like the Milky Way and Mina is about to motion for him to follow her when she sees someone enter the office from the corner of her eye.

“Mina?” she hears from somewhere in their living room, a wall dividing the sound of Yoongi’s voice from her vision of him.
“In here,” she says, then hears him pad around to find her in the kitchen as she takes another bite of fruit.
“What are you doing?”
She swallows. “Joylessly eating a banana at eleven-forty p.m.,” she says.
“Does it taste bad?”
“Too ripe for me.”
He smiles softly at her. “You and your weird love of chalky bananas.”
She gives a hint of a smile back and finishes the banana, then throws the peel in the freezer so it doesn’t stink up the garbage.
