even after cal’s funeral, his little siblings walk up to their parents at random points in time and ask them where cal is. his little brother often brings his toy cars around the house, knocking on cal’s door or sitting on his bed and kicking his feet. he can’t wait to play with his brother again. his little sister still does her hair in cal’s bathroom, remembering how he was the only one she’d let touch her hair. she’s a little older, understands a little more, and is a bit sadder.

there’s a part of the kids that know cal isn’t coming home. they saw cal in his casket. they saw that same box of wood get covered with dirt and buried underground. still, they have hope. they daydream about sitting next to him on the couch. they wear his clothes, no matter how big his sweatpants and t-shirts are.

there’s something immature and wrong about it. every member of the gabriel family knows that, but what else can they do?
