It takes them little effort, their ankles can twist to a 90° angle which allows to walk, run, and jump comfortably on 4×4, its faster.

Donnie is the fastest without his gear (for short distances), Leo on a close second with Mikey and Raph following

They don't do so regularly, makes them feel bad (unhuman, dysmorphic) especially raph.
