Ok like one person asked but I feel really smart about it, so my theory is that the movie has no point for two reasons
1. (I’m not sure if this is true) but I feel like it’s a commentary on how people say Wes Anderson’s movies “are pointless” and “just fun visuals”. So the movie was mad won’t show “we don’t need a point, we just need to have a good time”
2. A large part of the movie is about grief. Auggie is grieving his unseen wife as the actor Jones is grieving the playwright who we see he’s romantically involved with. Just like how grieving people look for a point in the tragedy, Jones looks for a point in the play. But is truth there is none. That’s why Adrien Brody’s character can’t give him an answer.
“You don’t need to get it, you just have to tell the story” the audience doesn’t need a point we just need to have fun and Jones doesn’t need a deeper meaning in the playwrights death, he needs to come to terms and fully process his grief.
Does anyone want my theory on how I think Asteroid City purposefully has no point?

We’re consumers. We are the byproducts of a lifestyle obsession. Murder, crime, poverty, these things don’t concern me. What concerns me are celebrity magazines, television with 500 channels, some guy’s name on my underwear. Rogaine, Viagra, Olestra.
