Interlude!
“Where am I?” (“Wherrreamiiii..?”) The gladiator attempted instead. The mystery man took a step forward, and Arenvald could feel the bed sag in one corner.. “You’re in Ul’dah, Arenvald.” The man answered slowly, precisely. “In the care of a chirurgeon.” Arenvald let the information sink in. As it did, he collected what shattered bravery he had left to ask the hard question: “How bad?” (“Howww baaad?”) He finally managed, his heart hammering in his chest as he braced for the worst. “Not very.” Liar. “Now that you’re awake, they’ll be like to release you sooner than later.”

Chapter 16 is LIVE!
Arenvald seemed to be about to ask some question when Thancred came to a sudden stop in front of them both. Before them lay the wooden door of a squat structure built into the stables, the top halved from the bottom so that each could swing freely. A lip jutted out from the join, meant for the tired elbows of a busy shopkeep. Hanging from a hook hammered into the door’s upper half was a hand-painted sign that Yenifer couldn’t read, but that didn’t stop her from knowing what it said. “They’re closed.” Yen said flatly, letting her eyes bore a hole in the back of Thancred’s skull. “Maybe for others,” Thancred replied, utterly unfazed and certainly unwilling to accept even a hint of defeat. “But not for me.” He swung a hand up and rapped on the wood three times with the curl of a finger. Yen craned an ilm closer to listen, to hear any sign of movement from beyond the threshold. Silence. Frowning, Thancred knocked again, this time significantly louder. At first, there was still nothing, but then Yen faintly heard something shuffle on the other side. Sensing victory, Thancred’s smile grew cruel before he started to knock again, this time pounding fist brusquely against the wood in an endless barrage. “I’m coming!” Someone blustered from the other side of the door. “Stop knocking, godsdamnit!” Perfectly pleased with himself, Thancred withdrew his hand before turning back to face Yen and Arenvald. “Bubujoni and I are… old acquaintances,” he explained with a smug winner’s smile. “We’ll be on our way to Horizon very soon.” The sound of many, many latches being undone turned Thancred’s attention back to the door. He faced forward just in time to see a lalafell push open the upper half. The man, Bubujoni presumably, had the air of exhaustion to him, bags under his eyes and a scruffy brown beard growing only scruffier by the bell. Bubujoni squinted as he stared out at the three hyur before him - then scowled, as he recognized Thancred. “We’re closed.” Bubujoni grumbled, then grabbed a pullstring to swing the door shut again.

Yenifer was born in Ala Mhigo, but her and her mother escaped to the Black Shroud during the Garlean invasion, when she was an infant. She grew up in the southern Shroud, Quarrymill specifically, as a refugee

Bubujoni came to a stop next to three of the golden-feathered birds, gesturing to them with his thumb. “These three’ll do,” he said brusquely. Yen glanced disappointedly past them at the black chocobo just a stall beyond. “What about that one?” She asked. Bubujoni stared at her like she had a third eye. “They’re not for you.” He said sharply. After a moment to consider his words - and with Thancred’s disapproving stare boring into him - the chocobokeep amended himself. “Have you rode a chocobo before?” He asked, still disdainful, but a hair less so than a second ago. “Er…” Yen mumbled. Bubujoni rolled his eyes. “Then Shadow is too much for you.” He said flatly. “He’d throw you off in a second, and then I’d have him-” Bubujoni jabbed a thumb in Thancred’s direction. “-coming to me about your broken neck.” He shook his head for emphasis, then aimed a finger at one of the three birds standing expectantly. “Scout here will do you just fine.” “You named him Shadow?” Thancred prodded. The chocobokeep regarded him with a cutting glance, and a quick flick of fingers that had to be some kind of insult. Turning back to his work, he grabbed for a set of keys at his waist. As Bubujoni worked to unlock the gate, a strange look of recognition washed over Arenvald’s face. “Sultana?” He asked, staring at one of the other birds. Recognizing the name, if not the voice, the middle of the three chocobos made a joyous wark and spread its golden wings out excitedly. Arenvald beamed, grinning ear to ear, as he walked to the edge of the pen. “It is you!” He said happily, reaching his hands up towards the chocobo’s face. The bird leaned forward to accommodate him, and made what sounded like gentle purrs as the gladiator stroked its neck and beak. “Seems that Arenvald has found his choice.” Thancred noted with a faint smile.

New Chapter!
Dotting the sides of the road were trees unlike any Yen had ever seen before, shorter and less flush than the ones she had grown up under in the Twelveswood. They seemed altogether thinner, stretching up to the sky with boughs thoroughly occupied by flocks of small birds that chirped and rustled about their perches. Strange plants, green and limbed, grew out of the hard, brown soil, covered in spikes of some kind, though Yen could barely believe it. There seemed to be different types of the things, some far larger than others. As she stared at one of the smaller examples, trying to make out whatever details she could against the growing darkness, the plant suddenly moved. “What the hells!” Yen shouted, recoiling in the saddle as the plant picked itself out of the soil and started to - in defiance of all good sense - walk. “It’s just a sabotender!” Thancred explained, shouting up to her at the fore with a hint of amusement. “Perfectly harmless!” “Speak for yourself!” Arenvald complained back. “I once had to pull half a hundred needles out of me by hand!” “Perfectly harmless if you’re not a fool, then!” Thancred amended himself wryly. “They’ll keep to the side of the Sunway, nothing to worry about!” “Do they all move?” Yen asked, glancing back over at her shoulder. She felt a strange relief to see that Arenvald was also watching the sabotenders warily. Thancred was probably shaking his head emphatically, but Yen’s attention was elsewhere. “No, just the little ones!” He answered loudly. “I’ve heard they can get quite large, though!” “How large?” Yen pressed, now turning her focus back to the Scion. Her imagination swiftly conjured the image of a sabotender ten, twenty, fifty yalm high, towering over the walls of Ul’dah like a monster out of a faerie tale.
