He’d say them out loud too, uncaring of anybody who overheard what was going on. “Degrading’s a lot more fun but it’s hard unless you’re with the sort of person who won’t take it so personally. It’s a bit pointless to Roman. All’s fair in love and war is very much a saying he lives by, that’s there’s nothing ‘gentlemanly’ about being a criminal because if you’re going to be one, you might as well go all the way because imposing limits upon yourself is only something other people will try to use against you. Crime Lords are by definition the top of the food chain and none of them, not even Falone or Maroni, got there by having clean hands. They’re all bloody, awash with dirty money after crawling up a mountain of betrayal, violence and sin and no silly dreams about criminals being gentlemen or having ‘codes’ make that any better. Romantic maybe, but they’re still just dreams regardless. Roman is completely honest about his being as far from a gentleman as a man can possibly be. He’s crude, aggressive and not at all pleasant, ruthless even to his own men when they fail to carry out his orders. He won’t go out of his way to cause harm to some random bystander but if they get in his way, he won’t hesitate if that’s what he has to do to win. Roman will do whatever it takes in order to succeed and relies on his reputation to make his enemies think thrice before crossing him. It’s the reason he’s been able to get this far, stooping to levels even his predecessors wouldn’t. That being said, his crimes are largely practical in nature. Roman has no quarrel with young children and won’t be cruel to them for fun - there’s no challenge in it, not like adults who at least stand some chance of fighting back and/or escaping.
