Winter afternoons in the Elliot manor were a calm yet dull time. The snow outside piled up on anything it could reach as chunks fell from the roof; small specks of ice danced around before falling to the ground. The only entertainment anywhere nearby was the sporadic crows outside, trying to perch on any branch they could find to avoid the cold snow below their feet, while others looked for more twigs or old drone parts to use for their nests.

The house was nearly empty inside had it not been for the servants coming and going from one room to another, keeping the manor as clean as possible while their humans were away.

J made sure of that. After all, James had dubbed her the head of the household when they were gone, so everything must be in order once they come back. Not that it was easy. There weren't nearly enough servant drones to split the work and complete it quickly, and not all of them were willing to listen to her. But at the bare minimum, K trying not to clog the toilets out of spite for once was a major win.

The maid was currently polishing the last of the Roland statues near the entrance before looking at the grandfather clock across from her. She took a step back to admire her own work (which was always flawless), then glanced at the clock. The time read three o’clock, so Tessa should be back from school thirty minutes from now, which meant it was time for the maid to get everything ready for her once she came home.

So J got up, folding the cloth she was using for the statue and tucked it into one of her pockets. She made her way into the kitchen to fix her usual snack and mug of hot chocolate, perfect for an eager little kid after a long day. Once that was done, J went and prepared her desk in case she had any homework; it was unlikely that she would have any though... it was the weekend, but those teachers at the school weren't necessarily the most generous.

Once she was done with the preparation, she checked back at the clock to check the time. It was three-thirty on the clock, but no Tessa. That was strange; normally she would hear the entrance door knocking and her bubbly voice announcing her arrival home, or even bursting through the front door with excitement.

"Hey, Z," J called out to said butler, who was passing by. "First off, no slouching; second off, have you seen Boss?"

"Mh? Tessa?" Z mumbled calmly. "Nah...maybe the route home's too slick. If I were her, I'd be takin' the detour route, mate."

"Hm..." J pondered for a moment. "Yeah, I suppose corporate wouldn't appreciate her slipping on the way home."

Somewhat reassured but still skeptical, J thanked Z and went to sweep the marbled floor. She couldn’t help but keep checking the time... and the more she looked at it while tidying up, the worse her anxiety got about Tessa's whereabouts. It had been thirty minutes since school had closed, and there were no afterschool clubs over the weekend either, so where was she? Just as the maid thought for the worst, a familiar weak knocking came from the door.

Perking up from the sound like a dog, J quickly finished sweeping up the remaining dust before hurrying to the door. She opened it, expecting to get glomped from the human, but it never came, much to her brief surprise.  “Boss, you really gave me a scare," she blurted out. "It’s almost four fifteen, where were you— oh..."

J answered her own question upon seeing the girl, and it made her bone-white optics hollow. In front of her, as far as she could tell, Tessa was a mess. Her uniform was tattered and torn, mud and snow painting her legs as well as some leaves and twigs decorating her hair. Light cuts and bruises were suddenly visible around her freckles, and she meekly tried to rub her arm to help with the cold. The poor thing was shaking harder than J's nervous hands.

The maid drone nearly gasped seeing her boss like this. Before the girl could even speak she was promptly gently pulled into the manor and guided up the stairs by the maid.

“Mother of company retreat, Boss!" J stuttered. "What on Earth happened?! H-how did you even get these cuts?! What happened to your face?! Oh gosh that looks-.”

“J..." Tessa croaked quietly, freeing her arm and almost losing her balance. She slumped against the wall as her legs almost gave way, prompting the maid to quickly kneel beside her in case anything else happened. "P-please... I'm f-fine..."

“Like hell you are!” J spat sternly, pressing her metallic hand against Tessa’s forehead, checking her tempt with her internal screen; when it popped up, she was relieved it was nothing too serious, but she still needed to get her into something else before anything else worsened. “Come on, we’ll get you a nice warm bath set up, once you’re done I’ll try to patch you up.”

"M-mhm..." Tessa mumbled shakily.

“Can you still stand Boss?” the maid asked trying to steady the child back up again.

“Kinda…” Tessa muttered, she winced as she forced herself up to stand with J getting up with her in case she fell. With Tessa back up again, she wasted no time and guided her to her room and sat her down on the bed.

The maid then rushed to the bathroom to get everything ready for Tessa, scented soap, bubble bath solution...alcohol.

"...yeah, for the cuts," J muttered after a moment's debate. She then turned around and spotted a couple other servant drones.

"Q!" She called. "And you too W. I need Tessa and her pj's in the bathroom pronto."

Whatever questions the two had, they set them aside and set off with little hitch. J followed them out, but had her own plans, and went down a separate hall. Panic, for once, was setting in a little.

How on earth was a maid drone like her, whose sole purpose was for cleaning and maintaining a household, supposed to comfort a scared little kid? Where was that in the manual for being an efficient worker drone?

J stopped in the middle of the hall, her thoughts racing through her CPU. What did humans do to comfort each other? Hugs were a thing... but that wouldn't be enough. Heart to hearts? Not her forte.

"Is something wrong, J?" A quiet voice asked from behind her. The maid drone flinched, turning around and trying to seem professional.

"Ahem... uhm, apologies, F," J replied, straightening her dress. "I... have a bit of a perplexing conflict. You see... Boss came home in a very messed up state. Mud and snow everywhere, cuts covering her like that one time she thrown a surprise confetti fight at her father’s party..."

"It was that bad?" F said, surprised. "I caught a glimpse of her in the bedroom but she just seemed tired."

"It's fine..." J continued, waving a hand to shake off some stress. "I've got Q and W handling bath set up, but... something in the back of my processor tells me it's not going to be enough."

"And you would be quite right at that."

"Well, you're a caretaker," J said bluntly, wandering to a window and staring out of it as she pondered. "What am I supposed to do?"

"I'm no official caretaker..." F replied with a smirk. She settled next to where J stood, tying her shoe. "But I suppose you did come to the right worker."

"Good, because like hell I'm asking K what to do."

F snickered lightly at J's remark. "Well, from what I can think of, I believe this might be a case of Tessa... being overwhelmed by school, perhaps. Kids get like this every once in a while, and they rarely get the support to navigate it."

"I thought school was like a second home to Tessa though."

"In some sense, yes. Maybe not this one. Now then... comforting a human needs to be genuine. It needs to come from someone who they feel safe with. Soft, gentle..."

J groaned in exasperation, sinking to the floor.

"Not helping, I suppose?" F asked hesitantly.

"I can't wrap my head around that!" J protested hotly. "Caring for others was never in my code... why do you think I'm so stoic and uptight all the time?"

F hummed for a moment, then lit up in a way J could only infer as having a great idea. What she didn't expect was for the older maid drone to reach over to her and... run a finger along her ribs. Granted, the action just seemed strange, but a second later, laughter was elicited from her.

"Pfft! Hehey!" J sniggered, squirming away hastily. "What the heheck was that?"

"Tickling, my friend!" F chirped happily. "Humans are sensitive on certain parts of their body, and if you tickle them in those places, they'll laugh and feel better!"

"Well I don't think it needed a demonstration," J complained, rubbing her side. She stared at the ground and thought for a moment... this might actually work. Tessa was usually so bubbly anyway, maybe tickling could draw it out of her. It was worth a shot, and she was about to thank F when said drone leaned closer and spoke in a cheeky whisper.

"If it's really bad... go for her freckles."

J had the impression that this was some private info, and for whatever reason... it made her feel a little mischievous. A wide grin spread on her own face. She knew exactly how this should go...and Boss was none the wiser.

Later…

Tessa sighed a breath of relief as she got out of the bathroom, her body not as sore or achy as it was before though it did sting. It took a while for her to get the twigs and leaves free from her hair though, but she didn’t care she'd dealt with worse.

The girl looked down at her bruises, abruptly recalling that she needed to see J after her bath to patch some of the cuts up. Her face fell a little more thinking about it, slightly wishing she had lingered in the tub a little longer.

Of course she knew the worker would ask questions about what happened; she did care about her after all. But then again… would she even care about something so trivial as this? Would father even care about what happened?

She shoved those thoughts to the side before her mind could fabricate any more terrible ideas. If J asks anything about what happened today, which was unavoidable, she’d just say she fell in a thorny bush…yeah! That’ll do it! Tessa was a klutz anyway... it wouldn't be too far off from something that would explain what happened.

When she entered the bedroom, J was waiting for her on the bedside with the first aid kit laying right next to her. She offered her a hand since Tessa's legs were still supremely wobbly. The human gladly took it as she crashed onto the bed, flinching from the pain.

“O-ow! Ow!” Tessa said in a small panicky voice rubbing where one of the bruises were. J helped her sit up, tearing the packaging off the first of many bandaids.

“Goodness Boss, you knew better than doing that…” J sighed. “Come on, let me patch these cuts up.”

“Alright…sorry.” the girl mumbled.

Deafening silence filled the room for several tense moments as J inspected every cut from her arms to her legs, sometimes finding more serious ones than others and treating them first. The only thing that was breaking the silence was the maid rummaging through the kit to find something she needed. Tessa tried not to look too surprised that J hadn't asked her one question... maybe she was biding her time, but that became less likely with each passing minute.

*Maybe she forgot the question...?* Tessa thought hopefully.

“So," J started, making Tessa flinch slightly. "Mind telling me what happened to get you these small gashes and so many brusies?”

Bloody hell. Luck was not on her side today.

“Er... well I- uh…fell in a thorny bush while walking back home!” she fibbed, messing with her braids and wearing a nervous grin. The worker raised a digital brow, she wasn’t buying it.

“Really?”

“Y-yeah! I-I got too close and…slipped on some ice!”

“You know that I can tell when you’re lying right?” J asked. "You think I'm buying this?"

"Yeeeeeeess...?"

"No," J said flatly. "Now c'mon, I have to know so I can let corporate know..."

"N-no!" Tessa cried, curling up and pulling away from J once more. "Y-you can't tell father!"

"Why not?" The maid asked softly. "He should know you're being hurt. Especially to the point where you're... well, like this."

"H-he doesn't need to know... i-it isn't that bad, really... I'm fine... no one needs to know...no one wants to know...no one needs m-me to be a-a burden..."

J frowned at Tessa's statements. This was just... overwhelming for any child, pure and simple. She was glad F had given her some advice, otherwise she'd have been silent.

"Would it... be better if only I knew?" J suggested. "You can tell me everything... and feel better knowing I don't have to tell anyone what's troubling you."

"M-mh..." Tessa hesitated, but lifted her head up, scooting a little closer to J and leaning on her. "O-ok... so, basically..."

And on she went. Tessa began explaining how, on her way home, a short distance from school, she was ambushed by a couple of jerks in the grade above her. She'd come across them a few times before, but this time, there were no teachers to stop them from beating her up, calling her nasty things, stealing her coat, and leaving her with almost nothing to look forward to even after such a long day.

J didn't budge or utter a sound as she listened to her boss's ramble. And when the latter finished, she thought for a moment.

"Fourth quarter profits...it was that bad...?" J muttered in horrific astonishment. A nod from Tessa made it worse.

"It h-hurts, what they said..." she muttered, tears pricking her eyes. "It... it got to me..."

"No wonder..." J muttered in reply. "But... you can't let stuff like that get to you, Boss... look, I call you Boss for a reason. I look up to you, I see you as a good person... a lovely one. Weirdness and all."

“R-really?” Tessa sniffled, finding it more and more difficult to blink back tears. “Even father?”

“Of course... you have no idea how much he loves and cares for you, same with me. Same with everyone else that’s in the manor,” J reassured soothingly, spreading her arms out. She had a feeling that the child would need a hug after talking, not even F had to advise her on that. “Wanna hug?”

Not wasting any time, Tessa practically jumped into the maid’s arms as she squeezed J tight almost like a teddy bear. She allowed the tears to fall freely into J’s dress, hiccuping and sniffling as she let it out. The maid was taken by surprise and nearly fell back, but she quickly returned the hug as she rubbed and patted her back for more comfort. Eventually, Tessa loosened her death grip of an embrace, much to J’s relief. The worker wouldn’t have lasted much longer without her chassis cracking from the hug.

But now it was time to initiate part two of her plan.

“Feeling any better Boss?” J asked, fighting to keep her tone from being cheeky.

“Mm, a little, but I’ll manage.” Tessa replied, fully letting go of J before wiping her face off with a tissue and sniffling one last time.

"Hm... are you sure about that Boss...?" J asked, letting a smile break onto her face. "Just managing is oftentimes not enough, you know..."

"What are you implying...?" Tessa asked in a not so sure tone while raising a brow, rather dumbfounded at the look on J's face.

"If I had to guess, I'd say my Boss isn't working right... so I suppose I better file a complaint... via email."

Tessa had a mere two seconds to realize what the heck J was referring to before she tried to scramble out of bed. Unfortunately, that was not nearly enough time before J glomped the girl herself.

"J! L-lemme go!" She exclaimed, trying to wriggle free but with little success.

"Not until you allow me to type that email to corporate," J stated flatly. She readjusted her position, holding Tessa in her lap and gently lifting her pj shirt to reveal her freckled tummy.

“There we go, now I can make this email.” J chimed as she wiggled her digits teasingly, making sure Tessa could see them. The girl knew this game all too well thanks to her father, he used to do this whenever she refused to go to sleep or wanted to play. Now J knows about it too, and there was little chance she'd go easier on her.

Before Tessa could even beg a plea, J started to spider her digits all over her stomach, pressing on the freckles like typing on a computer

“Eeheheheheheheek! J! Stohohohop!” Tessa squealed, squirming and trying to pull the maid drone's hands off her belly. "Dohohon't you dahahare sehehend ihihit!"

"Excuse me, Boss," J snapped playfully. "I need you still while I- oh for the love of corporate, I typed an H instead of a B!"

It couldn't get much worse than this. Tessa always dreaded the use of the "delete key" freckle on her tummy. And J's cold metal finger repeatedly poking it sent her into a mess of bubbly giggles.

"Stahahahhp! Stahhahp ihihiiht!" Tessa begged uncontrollably. She was laughing too hard to notice the fact that she had fallen back into J’s lap. "Gehehehet yohohour bloohohohdy haahhands off meheheheee!"

"Hm... nah," J shrugged, continuing her typing. It was a bit more comfortable now that the human was laying down in her lap and she could treat her like an actual keyboard. "Boss... has shown signs of... potentially bugged CPU... leading to tasks hit-or-missing... expectations."

"Ihihihi ahaaham nohohot!" Tessa protested indignantly. "Eeehehehehehe! Nohohohot the frehehehckles!"

"Ah-ah, what freckles? This is a keyboard," J corrected, making Tessa fluster from her teasing. "Ohhhh you're a bit of a mess, aren't you? Lemme add that... oh, EQUITY PARTNERSHIP!"

"W-what?" Tessa panted, taking the brief pause of tickling to catch her breath. A thought in the back of her head told her she hadn't quite hit rock bottom here.

"I hit ctrl + a while spamming delete..." J grumbled to herself.

"Uhm... well, maybe you can send the email a-another time?" She asked, praying J would have mercy on her.

Which, of course, she didn't.

J then proceeded to "retype" the whole email, her pokes and prods on the child’s stomach repeated with the onpy intent to annoy Tessa to no end. But she had to send this ‘email’ in hopes of finding a solution. Each time the worker was close to finishing it, she somehow loses progress and had to start over.

Tessa was straight up suffering from this tickle session, kicking and squirming trying to get out of her worker’s grip. She tried to curl up into a ball to evade the tickles only for J to wiggle her digits under her knees, muttering something incoherent about how she seemed to be malfunctioning before continuing to ‘type’. Rolling out of bed wasn’t an option either since J caught and tugged her back every time.

After what felt like forever, the maid stopped the onslaught of "typing", allowing Tessa to breathe again.

“Yes! Finally!” J cheered She poked Tessa again, earning a squeak from her. “And it looks like they responded!”

"Nooonononono..." Tessa whined, giggles lacing her voice as she crossed her arms over her belly and curled around it. "Don't tell me what they said... don't tell me what they said!"

"'Dear valued servant worker drone...'" J began anyway, earning an agonized groan from the human. "Duh duh da duh... blah blah, 'possibly bugged CPU requires a reset, which can be accomplished by calling the repair division...'"

"T-the what?" Tessa chirped.

"You know exactly who, Boss. Looks like I have to call them for advice..." J taunted. "Let's see... the number was... 317-244."

As she "dialed" the repair division, which consisted of poking a series of freckles on Tessa's side, J whistled a few beeps and boops out of humor. Boss seemed to like them at least, or maybe that was her squeals from getting poked on the side.

"C'mon, pick up..." J mumbled, putting a hand-phone to her audio receptor and waiting a few moments. Tessa took the opportunity to try and roll off the bed, only to get an arm wrapped around her waist and pull her back.

"Hello, is this the repair division?" J asked in a faux-professional tone. "I'm calling about my Boss, I sent an email regarding-? Yes, I'm J... ok. Sounds good. Walk me through it."

J went silent for a moment, then smiled maliciously as she heard these imaginary instructions. Her grin grew wider as her hands reached out, gently yet firmly prying Tessa's arms from her belly. She wasn't sure if it was some hidden troublemaker code she was running as she prepared to reset this "bugged CPU", but it made her all the more enthusiastic to carry it out.

“Really? And that’ll help reset boss?” J asked the imaginary receptionist, she nodded as she listened to them again “Ugh, and to think I could’ve done this before. Thanks for your help Bob.”

With that, the maid put down her hand phone, placing it back onto Tessa’s side. and from seeing the smile J had plastered on her face, the girl knew what would happen next. In a desperate attempt to avoid the tickly fate, Tessa pushed her face away from her target.

“W-wait J! You-you don’t have to do this!” The girl pleaded “I-I’m happy see? No need to reset me!”

“Hm…you certainly seem happy. But you know what the repair division said,” J told Tessa as she picked her up to where her belly was in front of the worker “And you know I can’t just ignore orders, especially when my boss needs it the most.”

Tessa didn’t have time to squeak out another plea before J planted a raspberry on her belly. Had James had been there, he would’ve thought she was being murdered by being skinned alive. The girl screamed bloody murder, kicking her legs wildly as she pounded J’s hard hat.

“AAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!! J! STAHAHAHAP! PLEASE!” She screamed, tears of mirth pricked in the corners of her eyes

J, of course didn’t listen as she continued, every now and then nibbling on the surface to get more squeals out of her.

“PFFFFFFFFFBBT! PFFFFFFBBBT!”

"J! EHEHEHEHEHNOUGH! AHAHAHAHAAHAA!" Tessa was seriously getting tired, she couldn't take much longer without hurting herself. "MEHEHEHERCYYHY!"

J was almost about to tease the human about her calling uncle, but the frantic, hasty tapping on her shoulder told her otherwise. She playfully rolled her optics and stopped her tickly onslaught, letting Tessa fall limp on the bed.

"OK, I can take a hint," she deadpanned, crossing her arms loosely as Boss heaved and panted. "I didn't.. get you too bad, did I...?"

"E-eh...?" Tessa huffed. "N-no! Not at all... eeheheh... I didn't know you were that good at tickling! You’re always so stoic all the time, I didn’t think you would do something as silly as this to cheer me up."

Tessa sighed, clutching her stomach and staring up at the ceiling. J was somewhat pleasantly surprised at the compliment. Tickling was something else... strange, yet it worked so well on the human. This certainly wouldn't have been the last time the worker pulled a stunt like this on her.

"Well...how about you take a brief nap, Boss?" J advised cheerfully. "Just before supper, so you can recover from today?"

"Okay," Tessa agreed, yawning and going over to the end of the bed so J could swiftly prepare it for her. She settled in, the covers soft and cozy as they've ever been. J leaned over and ran a hand through her jet-black hair like a comb.

"There you go... all tucked in," J whispered. "Now... one thing before you go to sleep."

"Mh...?"

"Would you be okay with me letting Sir James know what happened?"

"Uhm... y-yeah... he's gonna have to know anyway."

"Correct on that. But don't you worry...he loves you in a way I can't. He'll understand, and you have my word on that."

"Thanks, J..." and with that, Tessa's eyes finally closed as she nodded off into a light sleep, soft snores were heard not long after she drifted to sleep. J smiled at this. A soft, comfortable one. She looked up at the ceiling for a long moment, dreading the conversation with Sir James informing him of what had happened to his daughter earlier.

The maid gave a light and tired sigh.

She’ll have to find a way to keep the human from crushing his glass if he needed a drink once he gets home.
