Is every episode going to have a sweet moment with these two towards the end? Because, if so, I'm all for it.
hmmmm a reason i think fry is Good For Leela, at least in my self indulgent interpretation, bc i think fry speaks to her inner child, the person she could be if she wasn’t so often held back by her trauma.
people Really forget how much of leela’s behavior is implied to stem from severe abandonment issues, bullying, and a total lack of a consistent support system (at least not one she knew). it gives the vibe that she had to grow up fast and learn to protect herself and not let her guard down. she’s sensitive about being seen as mature and accomplished and attractive in spite of her mutations.
and like, fry has also been beaten down but internalizes it differently, so he has self esteem issues, but has also accepted that he’s just always gonna be a weird, messy, geek of a dude and he’s okay with that. and it puts leela off when he messes things up, but i think she also kind of finds his confidence confusing and inspiring – in the pilot alone, he’s the one who helped her realize she could quit her first job. and he’s the one who loves pretty much every weird gross thing about her.
i think leela has to accept that she can sometimes be impulsive and immature and naive and have silly interests, and most of all, i think it’s good when she lets her guard down and goofs off with fry, because hanging out with fry means lower standards where she can be more emotionally honest and childlike.
so do the chicken dance, girl!!!
