कोई तुमसे पूछे

कौन हूँ मैं?

तुम कह देना

कोई खास नहीं.....

एक दोस्त है

पक्का कच्चा सा,

एक झूठ है

आधा सच्चा सा,

जज़्बात से ढका

एक पर्दा है,

एक बहाना

कोई अच्छा सा !

जीवन का ऐसा

साथी है जो,

पास होकर भी

पास नहीं!

कोई तुमसे पूछे

कौन हूँ मैं?

तुम कह देना

कोई खास नहीं ...

एक साथी जो

अनकही सी,

कुछ बातें

कह जाता है।

यादों में जिसका

धुंधला सा,

एक चेहरा ही

रह जाता है।

यूं तो उसके

ना होने का,

मुझको कोई

गम नहीं,

पर कभी-कभी

वो आँखों से,

आंसू बनके

बह जाता है।

यूं रहता तो

मेरे ज़हन में है,

पर नज़रों को

उसकी तलाश नहीं,

कोई तुमसे पूछे

कौन हूँ मैं?

तुम कह देना

कोई खास नहीं...

साथ बनकर

जो रहता है,

वो दर्द बाँटता जाता है,

भूलना तो चाहूँ

उसको पर,

वो यादों में

छा जाता है।

अकेला महसूस

करूँ कभी जो,

सपनो में आ जाता है।

मैं साथ खड़ा हूँ

सदा तुम्हारे,

कहकर साहस

दे जाता है!

ऐसे ही रहता है

साथ मेरे की,

उसकी मौजूदगी का

आभास नहीं!

कोई तुमसे पूछे

कौन हूँ मैं,

तुम कह देना

कोई खास नहीं.....

ABSENCE

Beyond glass doors,

between thick branches of trees

in spring,

the rain falls, quietly. There are noises,

there are people;

they are talking.

Beyond the noises of their talking,

somewhere within me,

on another surface

falls your absence, quietly,

very quietly.

UNIVERSE

In a billion years, when

The sun’s fire dwindles

And ash blows across its surface

When the moon will no longer wane

And the land not rise

When like a cold, burnt-out piece of coal

This earth revolves, lost in its gyre,

Trailing a dying sepia glow

I think then

If a poem written on a piece of paper

Was to waft along

And perchance land on the sun,

The sun would ignite again!

You must have been hurt, God, When, while praying, I yawned I am tired of this thought embedded in a prayer Ever since I could see and hear I remember being told That day and night are at His mercy And in His hands lies everything— Pray to Him! entangled in my chest,

lines

fastened on my lips,

words

like butterflies

won’t sit still on paper.

I sit

for so long

with your name

on this blank paper.

Your name

just your name exists;

could there be

a better poem?

HAWA MAHAL, JAIPUR

Against the sheet of the turmeric-colored sky at dusk

Two long electrical wires stretch out

On them sit birds, dark and black

So still in concentration

As if someone has

Just placed Hindi alphabets there

And daily, at dusk

Some poet laureate

Writes a couplet on those wires!

*

HONEYMOON

Tomorrow I shall take you out

To the circular road along the sea

At night it looks like a necklace

Around the sea’s neck.

We shall ride far on a horse carriage

The hoof beats shall make us feel

Like monarchs for a while!

At the Gateway of India we shall see

The Taj Mahal Hotel

Where couples from abroad come

To spend their honeymoon

But tonight we shall place

Two bricks for pillows on this footpath

And heat the biryani from Irani hotel

And celebrate our honeymoon here,

Under this staircase!
