Gut Man’s Potential

His Character:
When Guts Man first appeared, I saw a lot of potential in his character. It’s heavily implied Guts Man in the past used to be a great and powerful robot but after the war he lost that and was forgotten, left to rust away in a junkyard. Night took advantage of that, it felt complex. A bot who had lost so much in the past and given the opportunity to regain that lost glory. But then as the show continued, they mostly focused on him being a gluttonous bot with nothing but food on his mind. Trying to gain people’s respect but more so focused on his appetite. A lot of gross out humour was used for him. I feel like there was some lost potential, that he could’ve been way more. My Rewrite:
He was a strong robot fighter back in the Hard Wars fighting for Robots and after the war, was left critically injured that he lost his power, many of his loved ones, friends, family, war comrades etc, were lost in the war and was left as a forgotten memory, rusting away into obscurity.
I wish they focused on the darker parts of his character, make him a “Knight of Cerberus” character, instead of just another typical robot master enemy with comical qualities and simpler relatable issues like anger issues or a lost pet, Guts Man is basically a forgotten war veteran who feels wronged and unsatisfied, that things weren’t properly amended. There’s still injustice and inequality between robots and humans, he never got closure and worse, to him one of the biggest enemies against robot kind is now being praised as a hero, living the good life with all his past crimes swept under the rug. Everything he fought for, all that he lost, all the pain and suffering he ever endured was ALL FOR NOTHING! And now he has a chance to set things right. I think it’d make sense he’d know about Light’s past as “Bot’s Bane” and perhaps even fought him or people he knew fought and even died. Perhaps it was Light who left him critically injured and took his glory! To him, he RUINED not just his life but for many other robots and got away with it. Have him be an enemy that hits closer to home, especially for Dr. Light. A harsh reminder of his past mistakes and trauma as well as a foreshadow of Light’s past to the audience. Have what was shown in the comics foreshadowed and focused on earlier.
It’d also be nice if he acted like Night’s dragon, his General. Instead of Fire Man, Guts Man is in charge of the Robot Masters. Have him be a stern, no nonsense general to them, aswell as a bit of a father figure for them. And perhaps the reason he’s hard on them is to prevent what happened to his loved ones in the Hard Wars again. It’d be interesting in my option on to see scenarios like him and Fire Man butting heads over leadership or trying to give advice to them, add depth to his and the other RM’s characters.
I also see him be loyal to Night, seeing him as one of the few people to ever care about him. If it wasn’t for Night, Guts man would still be rusting away in the junkyard. Guts Man in the show has stated to want to be looked up to, trusted, loved. Perhaps Guts Man feels in debt to Night, even see him as a kindred spirit. A fellow soldier of war who was also wronged by Light and forgotten, now wanting to set things right too. He’s so desperate for another chance in life, for ANYONE to at least acknowledge him, he ignores all the red flags with Night and their relationship. Overtime after seeing his treatment of Namagem, as well as how he treats him and the other robots and what he’s truly willing to do to get what he wants, including killing a child, realizes Night doesn’t care about his or anyone else’s better interests but his own selfish desires for revenge and mindless hate. In the end, he helps Mega Man take down Night and begins his journey of finding peace with his inner demons, as well as become a father figure and support for the other robot masters. Also perhaps he still keeps his appetite but it’s not just because of the type of bot he is but also eats a lot as an unhealthy coping mechanism for his trauma. To also add more depth to him. Conclusion:
Overall I think there was a lot of potential for many characters, to add depth and flesh them out more but especially for Guts Man.
What do you think about Guts Man’s character? Anything you have ideas about him? What do you think of my rewrite version? I’m interested to hear.
