Discovering Halfbrick Lost Media
i promise you this is interesting! you might know Halfbrick for making Jetpack Joyride and Fruit Ninja and whatnot, but their history spans over for YEARS all the way to the 90s. and today i discovered something really cool, and that's Halfbrick's long lost unpublished games from the 2000s. let's start from the beginning. this post will be LONG.
so today i was cataloguing every self-published Halfbrick game ever (as you do) and while i was looking through games to list, i remembered a page on Unseen64 i saw a while ago that talks about a game called 'Fuzz and Rocket', which was an announced game that was supposed to be on the Gameboy Advance, set to release in the mid 2000s. It appeared at E3 in 2005 and then was cancelled when Halfbrick couldn't find a publisher. it was pretty interesting to find out about when i first got hyperfixated on Jetpack Joyride and wanted to see if there was any lost media.
i took a closer look and saw that there was a snapshot of Halfbrick's site from like 2003, and there it was: the announcement for Fuzz and Rocket. so of course i go back all the way to 2001 and look at what we have here...

wow! it's old!
so, there's a lot to unpack here. first of all, yes, that is Halfbrick's actual old logo. and yes, that HTML is a bit broken. this isn't the exact page i was on when i first discovered this and the HTML was working properly, but this is Halfbrick's old website from August 2001. take in the pure Y2K broken graphic HTML ugliness.
but what i'm really interested are the games. if you look on this site, you might see mentions of 'Farma Llamma', 'Turbulence' and 'Defiant'. these were three online games Halfbrick worked on around 2001, all of which used JavaScript. out of these games, only one was released, and that one was 'Defiant'. here's the webpage:
Case 1: 'Defiant'

this was the page listing for the game 'Defiant'. according to this page, 'Defiant' was going to be a shoot 'em up, close to something like Touhou in terms of layout. it is 2002 and you have to destroy the enemy base, which probably isn't human. and, according to the game's features page, this game was gonna have "Tons of sprites on screen", "Transparent clouds" and "Funky intro music and tons of sound effects", to name a few. sounds pretty cool, right? you'd like to play it, right?
well, here's the unfortunate thing: you can't. this is where the lost media part comes in.
this game runs on JavaScript, severely outdated JavaScript that was not properly archived by the Wayback Machine. so we know that 'Defiant' was playable at one point in time, but now, it's been lost and is rendered unplayable. nothing much else to say, it's just unfortunate that one of Halfbrick's first only released web browser games isn't playable anymore. there is no information about 'Defiant' online other than this page and i would love to see it resurface one day. we do have screenshots though to get a feel as to what this game was like:

y'know i wish this game was found so i could figure out what on earth that pink thing is. he looks pretty cool yet so, so dated. there's a scoreboard too, which proves 'Defiant' was real and playable:

but yeah, 'Defiant's long gone now, and might probably stay that way. i doubt anyone has the game downloaded or if it even could be downloaded, and i doubt anyone who worked at Halfbrick still has it.
Case 2: 'Farma Llamma'

'Farma Llamma', as you can see from the site's description, is some sort of farming/resource multiplayer game that runs purely on JavaScript, including its servers. it has a neglect system where you farm dies if its not taken care of, so that's pretty neat! according to the features page, it was going to be a 2D game with a realtime world, and was, of course, playable online. there are no concept sketches to go off of despite the page implying there going to be some added. guess it was just never archived. to my knowledge there was never a link to play the game, and i suspect the game was cancelled from reading this post:

and from what i can find, no more updates were made on the game, so it was most likely canned, unfortunately, rendering it lost media. my theory is that workload as well as server costs contributed to the cancellation of 'Farma Llamma', though i obviously don't know for sure. an obscure game that was possibly never made, this is Halfbrick's second online game to remain lost, probably forever.
Case 3: 'Turbulence'

'Turbulence' is the game i am the least sure about. according to August 2001's snapshot of HB's site, 'Turbulence' was probably the one game that was the closest to completion apart from 'Defiant', around the time 'Farma Llamma' was put on hold. it was apparently gonna be something like a platformer/puzzle game that, like the other two games, worked in Java. it also had a 2-player mode. that's... really all we know about it. there is a concept art section which had quite a lot of sketches (including one of Elvis apparently???), but the images were not archived and thus won't load.
that's... it, really. we know it was a 2D platformer with 2 player mode on Java that might have been close to completion, but that's really all we know. an image of 'Turbulence' was shown on August 2001's snapshot, but alas, that too is broken. it was apparently for "next gen consoles", which i'm assuming is stuff like the GBA considering 'Fuzz and Rocket' was being developed for that console in 2003. maybe we might not ever know what 'Turbulence' was supposed to be, and it never ended up being released anyway.
Case 4: 'XGame'

WOAH! now that's a tonal shift, isn't it? on an older version of HB's site it mentions that the site isn't orange anymore, and then here comes THIS baby in 2003! and look at that logo! i think that's my favourite HB logo, it's so cute and bright and pixelly :D
so this is Halfbrick's game section from 2003, the same page where 'Fuzz and Rocket' was once listed up to 2005 along with HB's earlier works. one of the other games listed here was 'XGame', a puzzle racing game which was fast paced and "frantic". curiously, its gameplay and the screenshots available seems a lot like 'Raskulls', a game Halfbrick would later release in 2010 for Xbox. perhaps this concept was lifted from 'XGame', to which 'XGame' should really get some credit for (possibly) being an inspiration for one of Halfbrick's most iconic and beloved games.
'XGame' was going to be for the PC, and was suitable for handhelds and next gen consoles. they were looking for a publisher to publish the game, which i would assume was finished or close to completion by then. interestingly, there's some cover art mockups, both of which being for the PS2 and Gamecube. considering the time of creation for this game, yeah, that checks out. i'm not entirely sure of 'XGame' was its final name considering how HB usually titles its games, but there's a logo so....
the page for 'XGame' also mentions that "A PC based prototype of XGame is available by request.", which i'm assuming would have been for publishers looking to contact Halfbrick to get a hold of the game for consideration. this also proves that a playable prototype of 'XGame' was in existence at one point, but obviously has not been archived. 'XGame' stayed listed on Halfbrick's website until the site changed its theme in 2005, where it was quietly removed and fell into obscurity. weirdly enough though, 'Fuzz and Rocket' stayed on their site way up until 2008, which by then the DS, Wii and PS3 had already come out, making the ill-fated GBA game obselete.
does Halfbrick still have the PC prototype of 'XGame'? no one really knows. i doubt it, though. Halfbrick has changed so much since then, and even the long past of HB developing licensed games is relatively obscure to those only scratching the surface of their mobile games. i doubt they still have any of these games anymore, and i'm afraid that they'll stay lost for the indefinite future.
oh yeah, and i forgot to mention, Halfbrick also worked on another GBA game simply called 'Booze', which is... an odd name, for sure. it was actually being developed in 2001 but to my knowledge, was never mentioned on their website, just this article. nothing else exists of this old game except for this shotty prototype video uploaded to Youtube in 2014, and yes, there is that really old HB logo. this one is from later in 2001 and looks pretty sweet, much better than the older one, haha. so yeah, this is lost too.
Case 5: thats really it tbh
that's about all i can find. i love lost media and i think its really interesting how stuff can just go missing like that. obviously all of these are super obscure. and i of course like Halfbrick too! researching this was really interesting and know one else knows about it, so i thought i'd share it here. i did also find this page from October 2011 that had stuff from the super old Jetpack Joyride pre-release, called 'Machine Gun Jetpack' at the time. it's got some cool screenshots and i also found what i'd describe as a blinkie while looking on there too:

it's pretty swell! anyway that's all. sorry this post was super long but man i love infodumping about this stuff. it's really neat!
[outdated] archiving every single one of Barry's death screen quotes from Monster Dash: a rope of sand
so back when Monster Dash was first released in 2010, Barry had a handful of quotes he would say on the menu screen after he dies. when Monster Dash got updated a while later before being taken down completely, these quotes disappeared from the game and ended up being barely archived, so i thought i'd save every one i could find so they wouldn't fall into obscurity.
i found all these by sifting through decade-old videos recorded on bandicam or by some kid with a camera pointed shakily at the screen so i apologise for the quality being inconsistent and dodgy

first image id: "Note to self: Next time there is a wall, don't jump into it!"
second image id: "Agghh walls. My only weakness."
these were used for when Barry died by running into a wall and falling into the endless void :3 these were also the most common that i kept finding because slamming into walls was very common in the videos i sorted through,, i understand its ok

damn Barry going off!! this is one of the meanest things he has ever said to anyone ever and i think that is incredibly funny, jesus Barry

Halfbrick Lost Media: Fruit Ninja Flash Version
so after i made that post about some lost JavaScript games on HB's old website from 2001, i was thinkin' that i'm gonna make a sorta series of short posts about little bits of lost media i've discovered relating to Halfbrick to just bring a bit of attention to them and also document them here, cause i think they're super interesting!! i'll compile a little checklist here of some topics i might make little posts about and then i'll get onto it:
Fruit Ninja Flash
Fruit Ninja Tencent
Fruit Ninja Kakao
Fruit Ninja Frenzy
Monster Dash for Chrome
Lost Trailers for Old Games + Unconfirmed Jetpack Joyride Android Trailer
alright enough stalling, i'll get to the point now :P
The facts:
![[image id] A square app icon of a low poly watermelon with a very simple drawn texture being split in two by a simple white blade. The watermelon is positioned so that you can see the inside of the bottom of the top half and all it's wonderful seedy fruit guts. There is a straight line of splashed red juice behind the watermelon on a grey background. [end id]](https://64.media.tumblr.com/876809a35becf16ea65cb79f0a81a902/ea060beef01f5cec-c1/s400x600/1a7ecf501f862e282eb26f811dd3a43e93eb92f2.png)
This is the icon listed on this page belonging to a game simply known as 'Fruit Ninja Original Flash', which, as you might've guessed, is a flash version of Fruit Ninja which is presumably very old, being created back in 2010 before the mobile version's release. This game was up on Halfbrick's website likely around Fruit Ninja's anniversary, but now leads to a 404 page when the link is clicked. The game has no footage available, nor any blog posts on Halfbrick's website relating to this version of the game I could find.
Trying To Find The Damn Thing:
While messing around with the Wayback Machine, I snagged an archive of the wiki page this game's listed on and clicked the link provided on that page, which lead me to this:
![[image id] A Wayback Machine snapshot from 2021 of the original page Fruit Ninja Flash was hosted. The website is nothing but a pumpkin orange colour, with the text "Your browser requires Flash to run this game, or try a PC if you're viewing this on mobile." at the top. There is a white tab at the very top of the page where snapshots of the site can be accessed. [end id]](https://64.media.tumblr.com/907898838388d462766cb44fc19e48d4/ea060beef01f5cec-8e/s500x750/ca71dba8f9f5d4e8ee0680c75d61cd0126ae4877.jpg)
(apologies about the dodgy screenshot, i was on mobile at the time of taking it)
Not a good sign. This archive is from 2021, which is a little after Flash was discontinued at the end of 2020, which is... also not a good sign... Yikes :(
I didn't give up though, and I thought of taking a look into the website using Inspect Element and manually finding the .swf file just in case it wasn't loading correctly.
![[image id] An Inspect Element tab on the page where the flash game was hosted containing many lines of the source code making up the elements of the page. The main element highlighted here is an embed of a file called "FruitNinjaHBF2010.swf" located using ctrl+F search. the "HBF" seen in the filename stands for "Halfbrick Flash". [end id]](https://64.media.tumblr.com/00ad19ae483abe1e8de7b70e09c2a55d/ea060beef01f5cec-e1/s500x750/196619df68c523abea2d2fde4465e1d13b39ced4.png)
There definitely is something here, and this also confirms the game was made in 2010 by the filename there. It just doesn't load correctly on my browser, probably because Flash is blocked in some way (I use Brave). If only I could actually, y'know, download it....
Luckily though, I do have an extension called Ruffle on my Firefox browser. I thought I could at least try running it before downloading it, so I opened the page and clicked the big orange play button on the Flash embed, but...
![[image id] In the middle of the webpage is a big square box that has a red-to-orange gradient going down the box. At the top of the box is a big line of white text that says "Something went wrong :(". There is more smaller text in the middle that says "Ruffle failed to load the Flash SWF file. The most likely reason is that the file no longer exists, so there is nothing for Ruffle to load. Try contacting the website administrator for help." At the bottom of the box is a link in blue that says "View Error Details". [end id]](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4e2df185c8e5b00bebc2476cfe4c0199/ea060beef01f5cec-76/s500x750/d48153c09208cdc88301193744de4ba8aaa3d715.png)
... That's not good. That's not good at all. On Brave I tried having a look in the Network tab to find if any .swf files were being loaded in, but the only thing I found was an index and a JavaScript file. I went and tried to nab it from Firefox but I got a 404 when trying to load the .swf object directly. Seems like it's trying to access a file that doesn't exist anymore on the server because it wasn't archived and thus can't run 'cause of that. I also tried using Flashpoint's search too and the program, but they only turned up some HTML5 versions of the game and VR and whatnot. I did find the 8-bit version though, so, uh... yay...?
The Verdict:
Yeah, the game's lost. More lost than the 20¢ coins my dad dropped between the couch cushions. Halfbrick themselves might still have the game on them considering it's a super old version of their most popular game, and who knows! It might turn up again someday. But for now, you can't play it, unless someone has saved the .swf to their computer years ago and decides to upload it of course.
I did find something really interesting while trying to get this to work though, and it's this page by one of the devs who made Fruit Ninja named Aaron Green. It contains some pictures and information about developing the prototype of Fruit Ninja, including the low poly watermelon model seen in the Flash game's icon, meaning that this prototype is the Flash game I'm looking for, which is pretty cool! Interestingly the image with all the fruits and their gibs show a tomato model instead of the kiwi fruit one, and, well, tomatoes aren't in the final game. Thought that was pretty cool :D
I wouldn't recommend contacting Green about this, as this game was made years ago and I don't want anyone getting bothered and I don't even know if he's still at Halfbrick. It sucks that this game is lost but y'know....
thank you for reading all this way :) i hope this game will get found one day, i really wanna play it because it's a cute old flash game and i'm such a sucker for old flash stuff from decades ago :P
y'know how touching water hurts you in Dan The Man
what if Dan tried to drink water one day and he just

yeah
so i've been learning how to draw the dude (who i'll call Mach until his actual name is revealed) from Halfbrick's new prototype game TapKO cause i kinda got fixated on him,,, he's a stoic boxer who works his way up to becoming a true pro by punching the shit out of everything he sees, basically. the game he's from is on Halfbrick+ and it's pretty swell! (i may have also strained my wrist and forearm from all the excessive spamming while playing it.....)

(ignore the pupiless Garfield i forgor to crop the photo) i like drawing him in a sort of "come here" pose with his boxing gloves and giving his head a slight tilt (despite the fact that i can't draw head tilts properly...) i think he looks pretty cool like that :)

i like to imagine he doesn't really smile a lot, mostly out of slight embarrassment as he prefers to always have a permanent stone-faced Kubrick Stare™ and not show much emotion :P

did a little blender test to try to figure out how i should shade him. still figuring out how to shade properly on paper, i think this turned out alright :) i want his scar to be less defined though,, eh i'll fix it later
bonus machfries (barry x mach) crack ship sketches under the cut

man, this game hasn't even been out for a week and i'm already making stupid ship art of Mach and Barry lmao..... imagine if these two did get together though, Barry trying to lighten the mood and telling jokes, while Mach just gives him this absolute poker face,, and Barry just laughs awkwardly about it trying to change the subject. Mach would like him back though, they'd probably do little boxing matches in Barry's backyard or something :) (also sorry barry looks a little off, i keep forgetting how i usually draw him,,)

ok real talk.... this would happen.... probably. maybe Barry said something that pissed Mach off and lead him to punch him in the face, and as Mach gets close to him, Barry suddenly gets caught in his handsome focused eyes, his manly face, his awesome hair.... and then immediately gets pulled out of the moment as Mach punches the shit out of him. Barry's sitting down grimacing and recovering afterwards as Flash offers him bandages and ice packs. he looks pissed, and he is, but the way Mach so effortlessly beat his ass is still fresh in his mind. i think someone's in love :3
Finding An Old, Weird, Forgotten Raskulls Website
this post is dedicated to those in the Raskulls fandom... do you believe in the teapot?
![[image id] A drawing of The King from Raskulls in the form of a teapot in the shape of his skull on a dark purple background. He wears a golden crown with a single purple jewel in the middle. this was a sort of inside joke going around Halfbrick's emails, specifically an email to a Destructoid writer in 2009. it started as a simple image attachment (the one above), before another, slightly more threatening email was sent saying you WILL believe in the teapot, as well as containing a URL to the now defunct "believeintheteapot" website. you can find the articles about this here and here. under the cut is me exploring an archive of this website and the many wack ass oddities on it.
i found out about this a little while ago, around the same time i was messing around with the Wayback Machine on Halfbrick's old blog from 2010, but i never knew there was a website related to it. seeing that the URL no longer worked, i popped it into the Wayback Machine and this is what i got:
![[image id] A screenshot of the believeinttheteapot.com website, featuring the same drawing of the King teapot on the purple background, except this time it is a there is text below him asking "Do you believe in the teapot?". There are two lighter purple buttons below this text. The one on the left says "I believe" and the one on the right says "No, but the cake is a lie". [end id]](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b1262c5ca7e114493e0c79777a597669/65bb076fd89dc493-ed/s500x750/3a2f174290118cb255ec5c9646f8ba4b21b6f9bc.jpg)
.... a bit threatening of a question. even weirder, if you click "I believe", this is what you get:
![[image id, this is a long one] A mobile screenshot of the archived website, featuring an image on the top and working Flash embed, all on the same purple background.
The first image depicts and Angel Raskull with white wings and a robe ascending up to the Heavens, arms outstretched with a calm look on their face. Their eyes are closed, they have long blonde hair and they have a golden halo above their head. The landscape depicts lush green hills, lakes, trees and dirt paths decorated about the valley. The sky is blue and cloudy, with a white angelic glow shining out from the clouds. There is big, white heavenly text that reads "A HEAVENLY CHOICE." in all capitals. Below this is a smaller passage that reads "Is the teapot an answer to the questions we face in life every day?". Finally, there is text at the bottom of the image that reads "Is the teapot life itself?"
Below this image is a Flash embed with a paragraph of white text to the left, and the Duck Raskull holding a staff that is pointing to a countdown. It is counting from the number "35760". The costume the Duck Raskull is wearing is purple. The paragraphs read as follows: "Your choice has lead you to the promised land where legendary guardian of justice, Duck, is counting down under the watchful eyes of Angel." "What is he counting down to? The descent of the Holy Teapot of the skies to bring prosperity to all Raskulls? Perhaps he's counting down to when he will next devour a double-glazed cheeseburger." "We don't know." "But there is one thing we do know." "Duck can't count for quack.".
Below this Flash embed is the Raskulls logo, followed by a broken embed to the game's trailer, before finally having the logos of Halfbrick, XBox, some game ratings and a little teapot icon. [end id]](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1a1ee3eb19f57604052284a88355dd54/65bb076fd89dc493-76/s640x960/cb797b40f729110940f0a5059e41c595f1a88470.jpg)
if you're wondering what that countdown is counting down to, it's... well, Duck isn't the best counter as the website says, so it just continuously boosts up to random numbers in the thousands. guess we'll never know what godly endeavors the Holy Teapot has waiting for us... let's explore more of the site! what if i say "no" this time?
![[image id] Having the same structure as the previous page, this page features a depiction of what seems to be Hell, named "Cave Of The Damned". The environment is a dark rocky cave, only lit up by fire torches hooked on the walls. There is a view of the faraway darkness of the cave mouth, the walls getting darker and darker and more uncertain. Two menacing yellow glowing eyes stare back from the depths of the cave walls. In the forefront is a Raskull dressed like The Devil, resting their hands on a red staff (with its own little horns), with an angry look on their skull. They are depicted with large claw-like hands and goat's legs, as well as what seems to be a long red cape. There is a neon bar sign with the words "THE CAVE OF THE DAMNED", as well as a neon skull with an arrow pointing towards the menacing dark cave depths. Behind the Devil Raskull is the King Raskull, who doesn't seem to bothered about being in the cave and actually seems to be having a ball of the time dropping a slice of strawberry cake down a blue portal (a reference to the Portal series). To the top left corner is another orange portal where the cake is barely sticking out from.
The flash embed, like before, features a few paragraphs to the left, the Pirate Raskull to the right and a sign counting down from "79781". Pirate Raskull has a little wooden peg leg, an eyepatch, a nifty pirate hat, and a black costume with red highlights. They are looking up excitedly with their arms outstretched upwards. The paragraphs read as follows: "You've been punished for being a heathen." "The Teapot is legend, perhaps the greatest beverage dispenser since the Great Stein War of 1361. The Cave of the Damned welcomes you." "Pirate offers a way to redemption. Survive in the cave for just a short time to discover where the lore of the Teapot can lead you. He's counting down the days until all is revealed, though not necessarily in the right order." "You will believe in the Teapot." "It's like a suspense mystery, only with more booty."
Below if the Raskulls logo, a trailer embed, Halfbrick and XBox's logos, and that damned little Teapot at the bottom of the page. [end id]](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4f41d0b047950ff4cb32ca2b98e7e3d7/65bb076fd89dc493-12/s640x960/136f006c6e543db484419683f0cce475346fcc9e.jpg)
... cool! i just got sent straight to Hell! awesome! i guess the Teapot has more power than i first thought... just how many poor damned heathens are trapped within that cave? what the hell is that thing in the back? could it be the byproduct of the combined sins of those who denied lour lord and savior the Teapot? i never knew Raskulls had this much hidden lore.
according to the second article, the website feature only this image on it...
![[image id] A grainy black and white photograph of the fabled Loch Ness Monster poking its head out of a lake, only its head is replaced with a superimposed silhouette of the Teapot. [end id]](https://64.media.tumblr.com/bce52294638a286e09e6eea29dfb3814/65bb076fd89dc493-c4/s500x750/80f852bc2ea4636893f2821de3c6db3fb51b87c5.webp)
... which i didn't find when searching the website on the Wayback Machine. the article is dated on the 5th of October 2009, and the earliest capture on the Wayback Machine is on the 9th. at least there are plenty more captures of the website's more updated incarnation up to 2016 and that i get to show this anomaly to you :)
praise be the all-knowing Teapot, for it is our lord and savior. tell me... do you believe?
Jetpack Joyride promo art featuring the scientists working on the now discontinued Facebook version of Jetpack Joyride. the description of the original post has a link to the game, but now the URL just leads to a dead "Bricknet" login page. according to this article and this article, Bricknet was a sort of online platform for Halfbrick to put games onto that had added capabilities and integrations for friend interactivity for stuff like Facebook. there's also a trademark page for Bricknet if you're interested, just because i found it.

Archiving Every Single One Of Barry's Death Screen Quotes From Monster Dash: Updated!!
so you know when i made that post archiving a bunch of Barry's post-death quotes from Monster Dash a while back? Halfbrick recently updated Monster Dash to be the original* 2010 version for Halfbrick+, and it does in fact include the quotes Barry used to say at the end of a run! so i thought i'd kinda "remaster" my original post with new, high quality screenshots of all the quotes taken straight from me playing the game :)
*it's the OG game, but it's got some slight remastering going on. you'll see in a second.

first image id: "Agghh walls. My only weakness."
second image id: "Note to self: Next time there is a wall, don't jump into it!"
wow, immediately you can tell that Barry art got a massive glow up! he's got all this nifty shading and he looks so much more expressive than before! i like it! i like it a lot! apart from the art, the quotes in this game are pretty much all the same. these are used when Barry bumps into a wall and plummets (quite gracefully) into the void below :3

first image id: "That [Enemy] is just angry because no one will ever love him. Or her. Or whatever it is."
second image id: "You win this round, [Enemy]. Next time we meet, you wont [sic] be so lucky."
(the quotes switch out the enemy based on what you got killed by, like a Zombie, Demon, Vampire, Yeti or Mummy.)
again, Barry going off!! jesus dude, calm down a little! kinda surprised they kept the first quote in to be honest. when they added AOZ to HB+, they changed a lot of the dialogue to have it be more updated, including removing the Barry kissing Runingunin scene completely, likely to make it more PG (and to make Barry less of a creep), but they kept this one in! i like that though, i feel like modern Barry is missing a lot of his meanness he had in the earlier games and i like that they kept it in here :)

first image id: "Damn you spikes hiding cleverly in plain sight!"
second image id: "Who designed this place and thought spikes everywhere would be a good idea?"
these were for when Barry died to the aforementioned "spikes everywhere". not much else to say here, but these quotes are really funny! seeing Barry actually say "damn" is great, i wish he'd use more light swearing like that in newer games,,

first image id: "Dying is as fun as a bag of jellyfish!"
second image id: "Why couldn't I die wearing a cool hat?"
third image id: "That fortune teller sucks! There are no sharks with lasers involved in my demise!"
these are three sorta miscellaneous quotes that appear regardless of what Barry is killed by. they're pretty swell and some of my most favourite quotes, though i still have no idea what the hell he means by death being "as fun as a bag of jellyfish". jellyfish bags sound pretty fun to me, i like jellyfish...

first image id: "I hope I come back as a zombie."
second image id: "At least I died with dignity... And my pants!"
third image id: "When you die can you take your weapons with you?"
finally, high quality screenshots of the dignity quote! again, these are more miscellaneous quotes. not much else to say about them, though i like the thought of purgatory containing a weapon bay :P

first image id: "Why am I the cat with only one life?"
second image id: "I hope Death is ready to rock-off for the top bunk!"
third image id: "It's time to start a re-run!"
are Barry and Death having a sleepover or something? that sounds pretty rad actually, having a night with the Grim Reaper himself, eating marshmallows, summoning hellspawn, whatever else people do at sleepovers...
now this is where my original post would have ended, but after playing for a little bit, i realised that i actually missed a couple of quotes! they must not have appeared in a lot of videos like the original screenshots were from, so here they are now in their full glory to be archived!

first image id: "Note to self: Next time there is a gap, dump it rather than falling and dying."
second image id: "Ahh, Gravity. Such a cold, cruel mistress."
i've never seen these quotes before in all the couple hours total i spent looking for screenshots of the original ones!! i wonder why, they're not rare or anything. these were for when Barry fell into gaps without hitting a wall beforehand. i guess i initally didn't get any screenshots of these because the videos i got them from where about a minute or two long, and gaps don't start getting wider until around 2000 - 3000 metres, which the people recording didn't really get to. plus, falling into gaps cleanly is kinda tricky to do on purpose. anyway, they're archived now and in a super nice quality, and i glad i found them through the game itself! i don't know how much more "low-quality youtube videos from 10 years ago" sifting i could do...
that's pretty much about it for now! if i find anything else that's interesting about this game, i'll reblog this post with my additions. i'm super glad i have higher quality images of these, cause now they're consistent and i can actually read them without having to squint through all the pixels to see!! plus the very handsome glow up they gave my boy Barry ;)
(and finally for shits and giggles and because i don't know how to end posts, here's a screenshot of my best monster kills being at the funny number)

(nice)
i found this piece of promo art for 'Halfbrick Zombies', the a game that would be later reworked into 'Age Of Zombies', on the Halfbrick Network Twitter account. the game in this state looks much more like a survival horror and has a much darker tone than what it ended up becoming. i think i'd really like to see a game featuring Barry with a much more grim life-or-death feel, it'd be super interesting!! it looks super cool and i kinda wish it was released in this form :)

this is an archived anniversary page for Fruit Ninja from 2020, where it has a timeline of development, including a bit about the Flash prototype with a link.

unfortunately, as i said in an earlier post from this year, the game does not work anymore as it wasn't archived properly. i miss him every day.
what the fuck is going on on halfbrick's twitter

bear pussy????? hello????????
i was archiving a bunch of stuff on ebay and found this Fruit Ninja handheld that's very Tiger Electronics-like and i thought it was interesting because i've never seen it before, so here's some images from the original listing (archive) (screenshot)

i might start a reblog thread with a bunch of obscure-ish Halfbrick products i find on ebay because the documentation of these old products is important to me and they're just really interesting.
old "Trust Me I'm A Ninja" shirt from 2011 (OG listing) (archive) (screenshot). this shirt is no longer for sale.

here are images from a listing of the Apptivity Sensei figurine from 2012, produced by Mattel. according to the back of the box found on this listing, this figure would interact with the HD version of the Fruit Ninja app, which, i believe, were exclusive to iPads at the time. there are also other figures that were made for iconic mobile games, such as Angry Birds and Cut The Rope.
(1st listing archive) (2nd listing archive) (2nd listing screenshot)

additionally, there is also a variant of this figure i found on a Verge article (archive) that shows Sensei with an angrier expression, and i believe that this variant is a prototype using an early design because of the different platform, the much shinier finish compared to the final product, the different (and sloppier) paint job, and the fact that i can only find this variant in the form of photos on display, which are always prototypes before the actual toy goes into production. there is also no indication that this is a separately sold variant of the smiling Sensei figure. this is definitely an early concept.

the interesting thing about prototypes is that they can eventually turn up in thrift stores if they are not thrown away or destroyed, so i wonder, where could this figure be now? i hope it still exists, it's a very interesting piece of Fruit Ninja history.
this is also similar to the Fruit Ninja FX figurines which would be sold later, which had a similar element of interactivity to them. the available characters were Sensei, Katsuro and Truffles. i found a listing for the Sensei figure on ebay as well (archive).

(they're kinda similar to Skylanders figures, aren't they?)
finally, i found a musky old photo of a couple of fruit figures from a Spanish website, but unfortunately the listing had already disappeared and wasn't archived. i'll talk more about these if i find another listing for them.

P.S. i realised i forgot to paste the link for the shirt archive in the last reblog lol. here it is.

continuing this thread on with some neat Halfbrick plushies i found listings for on ebay! let's start off with Fruit Ninja first, since that one has the most plushies made for it.
first off is this jumbo Strawberry plush i found on this listing (archive) (screenshot). unlike the older plushies that were made by Nanco in 2011, this one was made by Toyfoundry and was from 2012, according to the listing title. it has a considerably better quality than the older ones, and the Fruit Ninja logo on its headband appears to be printed on rather than embroidered like the old ones. it has the app icon on its side.

this listing has some photos of the original tag which i think are interesting. apparently there was a QR code you could scan. obviously this one had apparently already been scanned, so i'm not entirely sure what it's supposed to do. i think it's supposed to open the Fruit Ninja app and redeem something.

here are the cotton tags saying this plush was made by Toyfoundry.

these are photos from a listing of a 2011 Orange and Watermelon plush duo (archive). they appear to be made out of lesser materials, lack a strongly defined shape, they headbands look very shaggy and they all have different expressions in their eyes, which i think is very charming. the Fruit Ninja logo is embroidered on their headbands and they lack the app icon that the jumbo Strawberry has.

here are their tags.

i also have photos from a listing of the 2011 Watermelon by itself, though they are quite blurry. (archive)

next up is this Banana plush, whose listing has photos of the cardboard tag up close. i like how the tag includes a little fruit fact about bananas :) (archive)

there's this green Apple plush made by Jazwares that makes sounds. it has an open mouth, Kanji characters on the back of its headband and makes the sounds of fruit getting sliced from the game. the logo on the front is also different, oddly enough. (archive) (screenshot)

there's also a Strawberry one (archive) (screenshot).

(check notes for next reblog, ran out of images lol)

ok continuing on from the last reblog: i realised i forgot to show one of the Nanco plushies, and it's this red Apple one. nothin' special about it from the rest of the Nanco plushies, i just want to put it here to finish off my disorganised list of Fruit Ninja plushies.

there's a few more Jazwares Fruit Ninja plushies i want to show. first off, there's this Pineapple plush from this listing (archive) (screenshot).

jumpscare

i believe this is the last plush that makes sound, and it's this little bomb one. the listing says this specific plush doesn't work, unfortunately. (archive) (screenshot)

the next plushies are these little clip-on plushies Jazwares made that i can't really find many listings for. these two images are from an old Amazon listing and a Walmart listing that are both no longer available for purchase anymore.
(Amazon archive) (Walmart archive)

there is also a bomb one (archive) (screenshot).

finally (and i think this is the last Jazwares one), there's this Watermelon plush that has lights, sounds, presumably comes apart and comes with a plastic blade to smack the shit out of it with. very cool. (archive)

also, not sure where to put this one, but while looking for Jazwares plushies, i found this Worthpoint listing with some grainy photos of a Play By Play Watermelon plush, and it's very....... odd looking.

(archive)
if i made a tierlist on the best and worst Fruit Ninja plushies, the Play By Play ones would be in F tier. they look so janky and weird and funny and i kind of love them.
(to be continued in the next reblog)

as i promised in the tags of one of my posts from yesterday, here's a recording of the new Halfbrick+ startup screen!
those who were there on may 19th know what happened....... the horrors

ATTENTION HALFBRICK FANS!!!
the long-cancelled GBA prototype game developed by Halfbrick in 2003 called "Fuzz & Rocket" was released and put onto the Internet Archive recently!!!

(and here's the tweet that brought this to my attention!!)

according to this archive, it's a build from January of 2005, a few months before its very last appearance at E3 2005. the amount of cool lost media that's getting found recently is insane and Fuzz & Rocket getting found certainly wasn't on my bingo card for 2024! very cool!!
hi im in a rush writing this post cause i gotta leave for somwthing soon but i think it's kinda silly that halfbrick decided to update the original monster dash app to the 2010 version and therefore obliterating all the previous purchases of the 2020 version of the game. why didn't they just like. make them separate apps. like they coulda had the 2020 version intact but make a new app for the 2010 version and it as like monster dash classic or something like what they did with jetpack joyride and dan the man. it's not even the original-original version. why'd they replace the 2020 one. make 2 so the people who like the 2020 version and the 2010 versions can both be happy and keep their purchases. just a thought.
