Yeah so this is my general process of drawing heads…it’s an amalgamation of many different things I’ve picked up over the years. This is by no means the best or the only way to draw heads, this is just the method I developed with time. Pro tip: FLIP YOUR CANVAS A LOT. I flip constantly to check and make corrections. The face/head is NEVER perfectly symmetrical, but some semblance of symmetry is needed. Of course, vary the features to give variety. I suffer from same-face syndrome but I’m working on putting more variety in my people…at least I want them to be distinguishable. Anyway, I hope this was helpful? My best advice is to practice practice practice. And don’t forget to observe. Why do you like how an artist draws a face? Or, why do you like how and actual person’s face is constructed? Play around with things until you find a method that’s suitable for you.

This is my basic process for pretty much everything I draw. The key is understanding the shape of the garment you’re trying to draw and the shape of the body part you’re putting it on.
Drawing the body first forces you to make the shoe, hat, or clothes fit that body. With practice you’ll be able to skip some steps. This method works the same no matter the perspective or pose. It just relies on your knowledge of what a hat looks like from above, or what the bottom of a shoe looks like. When in doubt, just google refs. Don’t necessarily need the exact angle you’re trying to draw. Look at different pics to give you an idea of how it works in 3d.
Shoes are always a bit tricky because feet are a stupid ass shape.
It might help if you think of hats as a cylinder fitted to the person’s head to help you get the perspective right before you push in detail. note: heads aren’t circles. they’re kind of egg shaped if you look at them from the top.

before this, i’d recommend looking up references to learn what eyes, noses, jaws and mouths would look like in different angles separately so that you can get a good idea when filling out the features!

Head Drawing Help. I was asked for some tips when it comes to drawing faces so I’m posting (not sure if I posted these when I first made them) these handouts I made that address the idea of form and structure when it comes to drawing heads. The main idea behind these is that no matter what kind of drawing you’re doing, it’s important to realize that the head is a form with multiple sides and you’re ability to move that form in space will greatly help you draw more dynamic and interesting heads and expressions. Hope they help :)

Basically with this one starting structure I can draw a variety of faces just by varying proportions and shapes.
