Running and hiding. The only things you knew since the Avatar came to the swamp. Your swamp. You lived a life secluded from the rest of the world. The mass of thick vines, humid air, and green water was all you knew. You never wanted that to change; until the day he came. The Airbender named Aang. His eagerness to learn ignited something in your chest.

   Four weeks prior

I can't live in this godforsaken swamp for the rest of my life you thought, frustrated. Realization hit you full force. “If I don’t leave now, I'll never get the chance to”. The words left your mouth, barely a whisper.  The rest of the day, you fought an internal battle with yourself. You didn’t know what was out there, what other benders would be like. Hell, you barely knew how to read. At that moment, it donned upon you. I know nothing about the outside world.

All you could hear was the faint snores of the people around you and your ever fastening heartbeat. Bare feet slapped against the moist soil as you ran away from the only family you have.

Your head turned to look back at the fading fire behind you. “It might be a while before I see any of you again” you paused, hot tears welling up in your eyes “I love you”.

Present

One arm swung at your side, the other holding a large melon. A thick layer of sweat manifested itself on your face. Somehow, you had made it to Gaoling without dying. On the way, you had managed to find some normal clothes, instead of the thin cloth, leaves, and bark that you had before. It was a simple outfit, a black high neck tunic top, with buttons down the middle and a pair of baggy pants. The shoes you stole found slapped against the stone of the streets as you ran away from the market.

Why were you running? Food was scarce, and at the swamp, there was no currency system. Stealing wasn’t the only option, but it was sure as hell the easiest.

“Stop!” The shrill voice of someone yelling out behind you. “Where the hell do you think you’re going?”  You continued running but turned your head to see a very pissed off boy. Shit.  He wasn’t very tall but was gaining quickly. Your head whipped back around, just in time to see a cabbage cart. Perfect, you thought. You grabbed the side of the cabbage cart and whipped it at the boy as hard as you could. It crashed near him, only slowing him by a few mere milliseconds.

You looked ahead, the treeline could be seen in the distance, and just a couple hundred more meters, and you were a free man.

A large stone jutted out of the ground. It flew through the air, aimed at you. Your eyes widened at the sudden force, but it was too late. You hit the ground with a crack, as the melon rolled out of sight. Resting your throbbing head in your hands, you peered up to see the boy in question running up to you.

Before you could move, rock surrounded your body. The boy went to pick up the stolen melon and then squatted in front of you.

“Just what did you think you were trying to pull back there?” he spat at you. You glared at him, unfazed. “I don’t know what it looked like to you, but to me, it looked like I was getting some food. Only to be interrupted by your rude ass.”

He looked at you in disbelief. “Oh, I’m the rude ass? I’m not the one stealing from other people’s shops!”

You knew you were in the wrong, but you weren’t in the mood to be told what to do by some earth bender you had never met. “ Yeah, you know what? You are a rude ass! Maybe you wouldn’t be if you let the starving girl get away with one melon!” You huffed out as forcefully as possible. Spittle flew as you finished your sentence. The boy opened his mouth, about to spit harsh words back at you when someone called out.

“Jimin.” You looked away from the man in front of you to look at where the voice was coming from. A taller man was walking towards the two of you. “That's enough”.

“But Jin, for all we know she could be Fire Nation scum...” He was cut off. Jin glared at Jimin. “Let. Her. Go. If she was Fire Nation, do you really think she would be stealing melons? And watch your mouth, there's still a war going on, and you don't know who could be listening.”

The guy you could only assume to be Jimin looked away from the taller man in defeat. With a flick of his hand the rock that had once surrounded your body was gone. You flew to your feet and started to walk back to your original destination.

“Wait!” Jin called out. You turned around to see him running over to you. “You said you were starving, let me make you dinner”. You smiled while Jimin’s mouth dropped.

“Sounds great”

The three of you walked together sharing no conversation, just comfortable silence. Every once in awhile, you saw one of them glance at you from the corner of their eyes. Probably just making sure I’m not dangerous, you thought.

The sun had started to set by the time you reached where Jin lived. It was a simple two room house, common in the Earth Kingdom. It was nice and clean, but it was homey at the same time. I’ve never lived anywhere near this nice, you sighed.

“Sorry it’s not much, but it’s home” By the way he said home, you could tell he wasn't from here. Jin looked sadly to the ground, leaving you open mouthed. “No!” you squeaked out. The two boys looked at you, questioning looks in their eyes. “I mean, don’t apologize. This place is better than anywhere I've ever lived” you paused, “and I’m grateful for your kindness”. You thought back to all the places you’ve lived, the nicest of the lot being a cave filled with guano. You shuddered, trying to block out the memory.

The three of you sat around the small table in the center of the room. Whatever Jin had placed in front of you smelled really good.“Wow” you said through spoonfuls, “This is really fucking good”. Jin laughed at your bluntness and muttered a thank you before continuing to eat.

After the three of you had finished the meal, you stood up, bowed and quickly made your way to the door.

“Wait!” you turned to see Jimin talking to you. “We don’t even know your name… The least you could do would be to tell us.”  Jin nodded in agreement and said, “Also it’s pretty late, you can stay here for the night”.

You sat back down at the table with them. “I’m (Y/n). It’s nice to meet you”.
