Probably the fact that the world tree actually predates the whole christian belief system with our people, yet still got worked into our culture! When we were nomads and pagan, we had the deep rooted belief that the world tree has three parts: foliage (Lombszint) bark (Kéregszint) and root (Gyökérszint) - they weren't considered heaven, earth and hell back then. There was a even a difference between the right and left side of the branches (divided by the trunk of course): the right side was the Sun, light, fire and male virtues, representing the daytime form of Isten. The left side was the Moon, darkness, water and female virtues, representing the nighttime form. And the trunk represented dusk and dawn, the rebirth of both night and day.

Nowadays it is said that Isten resides in the Lombszint and that's where he's watching over us from.

It's said he has three forms in which he appears to us:

The Sun, in the daytime

The Moon at night

And the Dawn and Dusk which represents change, and is symbolised by the evening star

In the old times it used to be a táltos (a kind of shaman) that was able to get in contact with the other worlds and bring back answers or messages. They even had spirit animals!

Nowadays it is of course said to be the priests, monks and nuns that can get in contact with him.

I'm sorry this is all over the place, I'll stop, because I could keep rambling on forever.

Hi

What are your thoughts on the Hungarian god, Isten?

ooh this is actually the first time i have ever searched up Hungarian mythology. i've never been exposed to it before, but i got really excited when the first thing i saw was a mention of a "world tree"- i love seeing common motifs across mythology, and this reminded me of the Norse Yggdrasil!!

tbh, i couldn't find much about else about Isten specifically, just that he's like the king for the Hungarian pantheon. i am interested in the idea that he worked with Ördög who is supposed to be evil (i think) to create the world. i think it's a bit different to say, the slavic rivalry between Perun and Veles where their meant to balance each other out, but they don't really team up or anything to create something, because this time it's like Ördög is actually an evil, demonic guy but he's still brought at the beginning of the world to help create the world. that's interesting to me.

i'd very much like to know more about it. do u have a favourite myth or something else you'd like to share?
