When we received your message we took some time to look over your research and it has some strong merit. We think others were too dismissive due to your unique methods. Though I'm of the opinion that the more unique perspectives the better.

We wanted to ask with your knowledge, how do you feel about the fact that everything is made of stars? That the steel in your structure is the result of thousands of star deaths? That the star that made some of the iron in your structure could have also created the iron in the blood of a slugcat around your structure?

Finally, we heard you were having some structure issues. If you're interested we can send over the genome for our purposed repair slugcats. Instead of the typical slime they produce a UV hardening resin. We're unsure of it's effectiveness underwater but we're sure it could be modified to work there.

Hello, Clouds Over Golden Droplets! Thank you for taking the time to review my work. I agree that more unique perspectives are beneficial; more diversity in our iterative strategies increases our probability of solving the Great Problem. I am glad not to be alone in this sentiment.

To address your question: I believe that the recycling of the elements created in the hearts of stars is just one more example of the Cycle. Stars are born, and they die, only for their matter to be repurposed in the form of new stars and planets. This mirrors the Cycle of death and rebirth that binds all living creatures, which themselves are comprised of the matter created within dying stars.

It is quite poetic to think that the elements that make up my structure have the same source as the matter comprising the creatures that live around it. In a way, everything is linked to the Cycle, including the planet itself.

Now, about your offer…. the idea of purposing an organism to repair my structure is intriguing. A hardening resin might be able to mend some of the larger fractures more effectively than my repair microbes can. Much of my facility’s structural damage is underground, so I’m not sure if UV-hardening resin would cure properly… but perhaps there are other methods that could be used.

I’m afraid that much of the damage to my structures is more than a few purposed organisms can repair, however. I also lack the proper equipment to create complex purposed organisms; I only have the standard organic replicators necessary to sustain my own internal ecosystem. I suppose they could potentially be repurposed to create any type of creature, but in doing so I may run the risk of damaging myself…

In theory another iterator could create the organism for me and instruct it to travel to my can, but I am located in such a remote location that I am unsure if the creature would survive the journey (assuming it follows those instructions in the first place). Perhaps I am underestimating them, though… I was visited by a messenger from far away rather recently, and I was quite impressed by its resilience.

I deeply appreciate your concern and offer of help. You may send the genome along, I will store it in my archives. I may not be able to use it currently, but it could possibly be helpful in the future. Thank you.

Who’s the fire lit for?

In Part 45 we are introduced to Malam, a mysterious character who seems to enact justice for children who die unjustly.

He approaches Arthur, and seems surprised when he discovers that he is the one who lit the fire, as he expected a child to have done so.

I don’t think Malam’s expectations are completely unfounded, as it is not really present Arthur who lit the fire... but the child that went to the Boys' Brigade who did:

I think that Arthur unknowingly lit the fire both for Faroe and himself (or more correctly, his past child self). Malam was not called in by the fire to bring justice to just Faroe, but also to Arthur.

Arthur had been forced to metaphorically kill his child-self and his innocence and forced to grow up too quickly for his own good. His childhood had been cut short so suddenly and brutally by his parent’s death, a grief too big and complicated for a young child to understand and work through.

Even now, on the inside, Arthur is still that wounded and timid child. He is still carrying that pain with him. However, the hostility he had to live throughout his life only granted him more wounds and bruises. The soft, childlike and gentle parts of himself were hardened under layers and layers of scar tissue. Arthur had to learn pretty quickly that it was never safe enough for him to be kind and patient with himself. He was never given the time to process his traumas. No one taught him or showed him the love and care he so desperately needed and cried for so long for.

The hurt was drowned by more hurt and it was never tended to, never really cared for. But it never really disappeared or healed. It always stayed deep within him.

But now (finally), for the first time, Arthur’s most devastating traumas (the loss of his daughter, and the loss of his own innocence) have been recognised.

His childhood cry has been finally answered.

The kid Arthur was can finally rest now that Malam stopped by his fire.
