So I realised something - two things in fact, today when thinking about Iron Blooded Orphans again.
So, Gaelio, having realised that his Schwalbe Graze isn’t enough, pulls out the Bauduin family Gundam, the Kimaris, with which to fight the Barbatos. Mcgillis (as Montag) expresses amazement that Gaelio did this, and surprise that Gundam’s are fighting one another. However, his tone is rather dry, suggesting that, while surprising, such a situation is not an unthinkable one.
So, could there have been other fights between Gundam’s post-calamity war?
The other thing is that, while we’re told that there’s 26 Gundam’s known to still exist in P.D. 323, at the start of the series (I *think* it gets pushed up to 31 by the end, since Flauros, Gusion, Vual, Asmoday and Hajiroboshi get unearthed or revealed over that timeframe, but I might have forgotten one), we don’t know for certain that all of the missing ones were destroyed during the calamity war. It’s possible some were destroyed in the intervening 300-ish years, whether by politicking (think the Warren’s and Nadira’s being shoved out along with their gundam’s) or by some other conflict (it’s of course possible that not everyone was completely willing to accept Gjallarhorn’s rule postwar, no matter what the state of things).
So it’s possible that other Gundam’s have been discovered or lost since the calamity war, and they could have intervened in numerous other conflicts in that time. Mcgillis himself notes that Gundam’s “have appeared numerous times at historical turning points and have been a great influence on the history of man”. Not “the machines that won the calamity war”. It’s of course possible that Mcgillis’ romanticism makes him a biased source, prone to flowery descriptions. But. It does seem to indicate that the Gundams have had influence beyond the Calamity War already by P.D. 323, thus implying other conflicts they’ve been involved in.
I don’t know, it’s just cool to think about (and possible fodder for sidestories set prior to tekkadan’s formation in 323).
Gundam.info just dropped this work of art upon us. LOL. "Tekkadan's hospitality" Merribit: Since it's a new year, it might be a good idea to recruit new members. Shino: What about new members? Eugene: You can't let the newbies think you're lame! Shino: Yeah, we gotta make the leader flashy! Show them who's the boss! All: It's ready!! Shino(?): We're ready for the show!! Let's go, boys!! Atra: What, what is this? A festival?
It wouldn't be Gundam: IBO if every last piece of ancillary media wasn't coming directly for your soul with extreme prejudice. For example, this description of a menu item from one of the Gundam Café collabs, it's a drink dedicated to Yamagi:
[Yamagi ~Looking Ahead~] "I carry that gaze on my back not because I can't forget, but because I want to remember. In exchange for the most precious, I risked my life to reach the place where the sun shines, in order to gain the strength to live. Sustaining myself with the memories of those days." I misplaced the exact quote on Shino's drink, so from memory, it was Shino urging people in Tekkadan to celebrate life, enjoy life, party till their hearts' content, and while they're at it, drink a toast to their fallen comrades as well.
According to @namazuyasohonpo on twitter. In 'SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays,' during the Earth battle (not the final stand though) Shino shouts:
"I'm going drinking with Yamagi! There's no way I could ever lose!!"
They've also included a screenshot of the dialogue:
I haven't studied the game very closely but I know that the IBO content loosely follows the events of the anime and there's several Shino/Yamagi shoutouts. For example, you can unlock Yamagi only after you've unlocked Shino, so you might say they come as a set. Shino also has a different post-battle line where he thanks Yamagi for his work on Ryusei-Go:
"Yamagi, you've outdone yourself this time! The Ryusei-Go is running super smooth, thanks to you!!"
Also this line:
"I love Tekkadan, it's my falimy! I'll do whatever I can to keep it safe!!"
Ow, my heart ;_;
My favourite page from the Complete Character Book <3 (no duh!) I love Ito Yu's art a whole bunch, and even though the art style and character designs were what got me to check the show out in the first place, I don't think Chiba's anime adaptation fully does it justice. That's because the anime has a very rigid, hard-shaded look, while Ito's art has this soft, voluminous three-dimensionality to it. Especially when it comes to hair and cavernous clothing that seems to engulf the characters. It's so unique. I also like her preference for a more stocky build with her characters, gives some variety from your typical noodle anime silhouette. Plus the endless variety of facial features on display. Her rough drafts for the show are a display of incredible skill and talent all on their own. Here's some interesting notes on the page:
Shino's particularly wide shoulders are to differentiate him from Akihiro, who is wide and sturdy all over, and from Orga, who is slim and narrow like a straight line.
Akihiro is built like a judoka, he always tucks his shirt in.
Shino is built like an olympic swimmer or a basketball player.
His shoulders are really wide.
Further notes on Shino: Both ears pierced, cheerful, muscular, short hair, Latino appearance.
The crying Shino sketch is from when he's mourning Denji, the quote above says: "Didn't you say that, Danji?"
When Yamagi's hair is lifted it reveals his beautiful face with japanese features.
Yamagi is beautiful but he's also strong.
Yamagi has small, short eyebrows and a shallow nose bridge.
He's quiet and unobtrusive but he likes being with everyone else.
Tekkadan uniform was designed by Juuki Maejima, Ito Yu's husband. Jackets and pants are a common feature, underneath are random t-shirts and tank tops. Yu's comment on Shino: "Initially he had short dreadlocks*. To be honest I thought he was going to be a very minor character, kind of a small fry (lol). It was a great surprise to see him become such an active participant. I didn't expect it to be an ensemble drama which gave spotlight to so many characters, I thought the other Tekkadan members were rather minor characters at first. They've all become important people." Yu's comment on Yamagi: "My impression of him was someone of asian descent, so I was surprised to see that he ended up blonde. His hairstyle seems to reflect the director's image of an introvert. It's only when Shino caressed his head that both his eyes were revealed, and I think that's why grown-up Yamagi in the last episode decided to lift his bangs and show both his eyes. Grownup Yamagi wasn't something included in my proposal, I was very impressed with the artistic skill of showing his whole heart at a glance with just a single image." *I have also seen it mentionned on twitter that Shino initially also had a lot darker skin. As a result of several edits he gradually ended up looking more like Asian/Latino mix. The reason why his design was changed were never given, but my take is that dreads were deemed too difficult to animate for someone they thought would be a minor character.
