19th century AU
Give me an AU where Irulan is the Empress of a constitutional empire and Paul Atreides is her charismatic, married, wildly popular PM. His father, who would have been PM, was assassinated by a right-wing movement led by the Harkonnens. He has a younger sister, whom he's bringing up; a mother, who's trying yo recover from the death of her husband, and a wife who's just lost their baby. And he has a very confrontational relationship with the other players in the political arena, and his young, beautiful and intelligent Empress.
1960s Dune AU
1960s AU--Paul Atreides and Irulan Corrino come from a similar background and share similar interests. Her feelings have slowly deepened into love, but Paul is drawn to Chani, a passionate civil rights activist. When Paul's father, Senator Leto Atreides, is assassinated while contesting a presidential election, Paul, who's been in the armed forces until then (Vietnam) steps in, along with his mother, to fight for his father's causes, which include civil rights, thus bringing him close to Chani. In the meantime, Irulan, who's working as a journalist, discovers her father had something to do with Senator Atreides' assassination...and a crooked businessman, Vladimir Harkonnen was also involved. Should she go to Paul, who's trying to get to the truth of his father's assassination, or should she help her father?

As Padishah Emperor, Paul is supposed to traverse the entire empre, accompanied by his wife, Irulan. He's still in love with Chani and determined to only have a marriage in name with Irulan. On one of the planets they visit, where the people, not just the nobles or the wealthy, are connoisseurs of art and literature, and enjoy the good life, Paul is very surprised to take second place to his wife. They gush over her clothes and sense of style and the prince of that planet has the temerity to not only praise his wife's learning and beauty at a state banquet, he also dances with her, to Paul's fury. Regency AU
Paul Atreides, Duke of Arrakis after the death of his father Leto, is the sole support of his ferocious mama, Lady Jessica, his young sister Alia and his twins by his deceased wife, Chani Kynes--Leto and Ghanima. His Corrino cousins--Irulan, Wencisia, Chalice, Josifa and Rugi--enter his life all of a sudden, because Irulan, as the eldest daughter of the late Shaddam Corrino, Duke of Kaitain, is expected to marry Paul's mother's cousin, Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, heir to her father, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. The baron, in pursuit of this ambition, has been busily buying up all the Corrino debt to force her agreement. When Irulan lays this issue before him and asks for his help, Paul is quite prepared to tell her to take her woes elsewhere, when his mother intervenes and demands he act.
Albert and Victoria AU
In which Paul and Irulan marry--rather like Albert and Victoria. Although Irulan is more like Albert--intellectual--and Paul is more like Victoria--authoritarian.
Single Parent AU
Paul and Chani have been in a relationship since they met in college and started work, he as an ethical corporate raider and she as an ecologist and activist. Paul raids corporates that are depleting the environment for financial gain, such as Imperial Universe Corp, where his father headed the agriculture division before he was sent to troubleshoot the petroleum extraction and refining division, which is when he was assassinated. They have twins, Leto and Ghanima, whom they love very much. However, their relationship breaks up when Paul takes over Imperial Universe Corp from its CEO, Shaddam Corrino, whom he blamed for conspiring to kill his father, Leto Atreides, along with his maternal grandfather, Vladimir Harkonnen. As a part of this deal, Paul is even prepared to wed Irulan Corrino, Shaddam's University professor daughter, to get control over the controlling Corrino block of shares in the corporation. And even though Paul fervently assures Chani that his marriage is only a business arrangement, 'in name only', she wants out of their relationship. So how do Chani and Paul negotiate being single parents? How does Irulan deal with being a stepmother? How do Leto and Ghanima deal with the three adults in their lives? Does Chani find someone else? Does Paul and Irulan's marriage progress from a business deal to something more meaningful? And does Paul understand why Chani gave up on them?
Arranged Marriage Modern AU
A modern AU in which Paul has to work hard to win Irulan's affection, despite their marriage. She's an intelligent woman who's an MBA, helps her father look after the family firm and her mother bring up the four younger girls. So why is her father handing over the family firm and properties to an ex-armyman cousin, his spiritualist girlfriend and their crazy son who thinks he's a Prophet? And the spiritualist girlfriend is a daughter of Vladimir Harkonnen, one of her father's sleaziest associates. And she's expected to marry the crazy son, who already has a live-in girlfriend and two kids, to ensure that her sisters get a good start in life? Why don't her father, the board or directors and the investors, trust her, a woman, to run Imperial Universe Corp?
Henry VII!Paul
Where Paul has to do a Henry VII and find husbands for Irulan's younger sisters. Maybe it leads to a better relationship with his wife?
An Annulment
Instead of feeding abortificants to Chani, Irulan, who's sick of being a third wheel, an unwanted wife and so on, lets her get pregnant and then asks Paul for an annulment, because their marriage was never consummated. How does Paul react, since he knows Chani will die birthing him a child, and where does Irulan think of going, in the known universe? Also, how do the Bene Gesserit, her family, and Paul's council react to this bombshell?
IVF AU
Again, in Dune Messiah, Paul tells the Reverend Mother that he's quite OK with providing the sperm if the Bene Gesserit will permit Irulan to have babies by artificial insemination. The Reverend Mother is horrified. But what if she had agreed? How would it have gone down?
According to Law AU
In every polygamous society, the male partner was supposed to treat his wives with an equal amount of consideration and care, without playing favorites. This would also be true of the empire that Paul rules. These laws were reinforced by religious dictates.
According to the laws and usages of the Imperium, and of the Fremen, a man is required to spend an equal amount of time with a wife and a concubine, so neither woman feels neglected. Also, he is expected to do his duty by both women, or either one of them could take him to court to end their relationship. So, although Paul does not want to, he has to spend half a standard month with Chani and half with Irulan and perform his marital duties (ahem!).
Iranian Revolution AU
Basically, Paul, Chani, Irulan, Feyd-Rautha, and Glossu have to make sense of what's happening in Iran in 1978 and get out alive. Paul works for Irulan's father, who's in the oil business. Irulan is trying to coordinate with various ministries before she gets as many of the execs and workers working for Corrino Oil out. Chani's pregnant--Paul can't leave because he's helping Irulan. Feyd-Rautha and Glossu are working for the US embassy and are certain that Irulan and Paul are overreacting.
Strangers in the Night AU
Both Paul and Irulan are the butt of their family's jokes. Paul, because he married his high-school girlfriend, they went to college together and then broke apart because they outgrew each other--she's an environmental activist and he's a corporate lawyer. They have two boys and a girl. He hasn't had a relationship since then.
Irulan has spent her teenage years and early 20s climbing the academic ladder, which left her no time for boyfriends or a private life, much to the despair of her mother and sisters. She's a PhD in history, hoping to get tenure--then she'll look for a partner, she tells her family.
They're both away from home--Paul is visiting a client and Irulan is at a conference, where she's presenting a paper. They're booked in at the same hotel and keep running into each other. They often meet at the bar and share confidences. At the airport, they learn that their flights have been delayed due to a massive thunderstorm. They have to share a room with a double bed since the airport hotel is running out of rooms because so many flights are stranded. And because of the thunderstorm, electricity, power, mobile services and internet are all affected. And the blankets are inadequate to keep them warm...
Do they end up meeting after their one-night stand in the airport hotel?
