Irulan Corrino - Tumblr Posts
I liked Villeneuve’s Chani so much better and now I know why. He portrayed her a someone who questioned everything instead of blindly following Paul like she does in the books. I hope he writes a similar arc for Irulan too
I want to talk a little bit about Frank Herbert and the Bene Gesserits, because it’s something that’s been on my mind for a while and I haven’t seen anyone looking at these characters from this perspective yet (not that I looked very hard, but I check the tags occasionally and just haven’t seen it, and this would be the first place I’d expect to).
It’s strange in a good way seeing Dune become popular, and people actually reading the books, and it being cool to do so, not it being a niche and nerdy thing. But what’s equally weird is to see all the praise Frank Herbert’s getting, especially from women readers 😂
Because at any point between, I think, the 80s and the 2000s, if a guy said he liked Frank Herbert that was considered by women to be a red flag. I remember women chatting about this in online forums back in the day. It was the equivalent of a guy saying he likes Jordan Peterson now.

AU where movie Chani stayed after Paul's fight with Feyd-Rautha:
Paul held his ground when demanding the now defunct emperor's submission to his ascendency, but his strength faded as quickly as the Fedaykin made their way to the airships. Chani caught him as his steps faltered outside of the throne room.
"Usul, you need to sit down," she whispered.
"No!" Paul snapped. "No. I cannot show weakness in this moment. Help me get to one of the side chambers, out of sight," he pleaded.
Chani supported his weight as he struggled to stay upright while limping down the long hall. She ordered the two Fedaykin who stayed behind to find pull down the tapestries from the walls to serve as a makeshift cushion for Paul to lay on.
"We need to get you to the healer," Chani lamented as she inspected his stab wounds. Blood seeped from the hole in his chest with each breath he took.
"Chani," he rasped and reached for her cheek. "My desert spring. I...[gasp] I love you." His head lolled to the side as his arm fell.
Chani turned to her fellow Fremen. "Go get the healer! Bring her here! He hasn't the strength to make it to the ridge. Go! Now!"
She turned back to Paul. "You're not done loving me. You have to keep breathing!" She leaned over to place her ear next to his nose, relieved when she heard the faintest of breaths.
Irulan appeared at the doorway. Chani spotted the movement out of the corner of her eye. "What do you want?" Chani growled, hovering over Paul's body in a protective crouch.
"I...
"You wanted to see if your betrothed is dead? Unless you have something useful to offer...Get. Out."
"There is a med bay on the ship," Irulan replied calmly. "We stock the finest medicines in the Imperium and a doctor at the ready."
"Do you really think I am going to let your doctor touch him? Just to kill him so your father can be reinstated?"
"Paul will die just the same if you don't."
Chani clicked her jaw shut and furrowed her brow. "Why do you care?"
"Because I don't agree with my father's actions that led Paul down this path," Irulan responded softly and ducked her head.
Chani paused, dropping her gaze to Paul's face. "Bring him."
Irulan looked up, puzzled.
"Bring the doctor here. Paul can't be moved."
"Of course." Irulan half-bowed and pulled a communicator from a concealed pocket as she walked away.
Chani ran her fingers through Paul's damp curls. The blood on his forehead had crusted over. "Stay with me, Usul."

Masterlist
In which canon-era Paul actually grows up and shares knowledge of Chani's death in childbirth with her. This also leads to an adult conversation with Irulan--he agrees to consummate their marriage and have kids with her who will be brought up to appreciate the Fremen and offworlder heritage. He enlists Irulan's help in ending the jihad diplomatically.
Also, Irulan has her own issues. She's grown up in a hostile home environment, where she was forced to observe and report to her mother on her father having sex with his concubines. How does this affect her attitude to sex? How did Shaddam react to a family of five girls? How did her mother die? What his her own attitude to childbirth?
Paul and Irulan are distantly related--and they study at the same university. However, they can't stand each other and spend all their time arguing with each other.
This carries on through their university career, postgraduate school and their jobs for Empire Industries, for which Paul's father works in a very senior position and in which Irulan's dad is the CEO.
Until the day that Paul's dad is sent to Arrakis, to clean up the mess that Paul's granddad, Vladimir Harkonnen, and cousins Glossu Rabban and Feyd-Rautha made. Paul is sent as his assistant and Irulan is told she has to choose one of the Harkonnen boys to marry; he will run the company and she will be a dutiful corporate wife.
Paul and his parents are trying to understand who's behind the acts of sabotage against them and their team on Arrakis. And Leto and Paul are trying to make a deal with the Fremen, who don't like their land being exploited. It's then that he runs into Chani, his girlfriend in University, who's working along with her mother as an environmental scientist.
Regency AU
Paul Atreides, Duke of Arrakis after the death of his father Leto, is the sole support of his ferocious mama, Lady Jessica, his young sister Alia and his twins by his deceased wife, Chani Kynes--Leto and Ghanima. His Corrino cousins--Irulan, Wencisia, Chalice, Josifa and Rugi--enter his life all of a sudden, because Irulan, as the eldest daughter of the late Shaddam Corrino, Duke of Kaitain, is expected to marry Paul's mother's cousin, Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, heir to her father, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. The baron, in pursuit of this ambition, has been busily buying up all the Corrino debt to force her agreement. When Irulan lays this issue before him and asks for his help, Paul is quite prepared to tell her to take her woes elsewhere, when his mother intervenes and demands he act.
Corrino!Tyrion Lannister
Tyrion Lannister is born a Corrino--younger than Irulan--maybe Anirul disobeys the Bene Gesserit after giving Shaddam two daughters? He stays with his sister on Arrakis as a hostage of Paul Muad'dib. Cue lots of sassy comments, much drinking and lots of bad behavior from Tyrion, much to the exasperation of Irulan, who's quite fond of him. How would Paul and Jessica relate to him?
Princess Irulan's Lover AU
In <i>Dune Messiah</i>, Paul 'generously' permits Irulan to take a lover, provided she does not have kids by him. This is an offer that Irulan spurns. However, what if she had taken Paul up on this offer? Who would she have chosen and how would she have gone about it? Describe the repercussions. Does she still dose Chani with the contraceptives or does she stop? What impact does this have on Paul?
Albert and Victoria AU
In which Paul and Irulan marry--rather like Albert and Victoria. Although Irulan is more like Albert--intellectual--and Paul is more like Victoria--authoritarian.
Five Women in Irulan’s Shoes + Irulan in the Shoes of Five Women
The five women are: a) Cersei Lannister b) Margaery Tyrell c) Sansa Stark d) Daenerys Targaryen e) Arianne Martell How would they live with Paul, Jessica, Chani and Alia? How would they rate Arrakis? And yes, they'd.all have Bene Gesserit training. And how would Irulan deal with: a) Robert Baratheon and Jaime Lannister b) Renly, Joffrey and Tommen Baratheon c) Joffrey Baratheon, Tyrion Lannister and Petyr Baelish d) Khal Drogo, Jorah Mormont, Daario Naharis and Hizdar zo Loraq e) Daemon Sand and Arys Oakheart And yes, she'd still have access to her Bene Gesserit skills and memories of her previous life. What would Irulan think of Planetos?
Historian!Irulan
Irulan manages to gather enough material on Paul's ascent and his rule, as well as the Fremen Rebellion on Arrakis, to fill several books. How does she go about it? Because Herbert gives us no indication how or when she wrote her books.
Dune/School AU
In which Paul, Alia, Feyd-Rautha, Glossu, Chani and Irulan and her sisters are all in school. Paul, Feyd-Rautha, Chani and Irulan--secondary school. Paul and Irulan are in student government/head boy and head girl. Glossu--in college, on a football scholarship. Chalice and Wensicia--high school. Josifa and Rugi--primary school. Alia--homeschooled, for reasons. Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho--phys ed, especially fencing (Paul's favourite subjects). Margot Fenring--French, literature, history(Irulan's favorite subjects). Also, Margot is married to Hasimir Fenring, assistant to Shaddam Corrino and chief troubleshooter for Imperial Universe Corp. She and Feyd are in a relationship. Gauis Helen Mohaim--the principal/headmistress of the school, who knows just what her students are getting up to. They're all convinced she's a witch. She's on Irulan's back to concentrate on business and finance, so that she can run Imperial Universe and to seriously consider one of the Harkonnen boys as a life partner. Although Irulan takes her advice in the first case, she is dragging her feet on the second. Feyd-Rautha and Glossu are being brought up by Leto and Jessica Atreides. Their parents, Abulurd and his wife, knew Jessica's mother, who brought her up without any support from Abulurd's brother, Vladimir--they tried to help as much as they could. So when Abulurd and his wife were making their wills, they named Jessica guardian to their sons. Also, Vladimir being unmarried is a serious black mark against him. He's dogged by rumours of sexual abuse of underage boys Both Leto and Vladimir work for Imperial Universe Corp, as does Chani's mother, ecologist Dr Liet Kynes. Imperial Universe Corp is headed by Shaddam Corrino--they're into trading in everything, from agricultural produce to petroleum and drugs. Dr Liet Kynes tries to ensure that IU Corp does as little damage to the planet as possible. Shaddam's wife, Anirul and Jessica run a yoga and meditation studio, in which they try to ensure that children and adults learn as much as possible, to stay healthy and grounded. Jessica's mother started this studio, with help from Abulurd and his wife. Jessica took over after graduating business school and Anirul, her classmate, joined her. Their children, including the Harkonnen boys, are expected to take active part.
Thufir Hawat works as an accountant with Leto, while Piter DeVries is a rather shady lawyer who works with Vladimir Harkonnen. Dr Yueh and his wife provide medical care to this group.
Irulan Playing Cheops on Arrakis--Who is her partner in this game?
Restaurant AU
In which Irulan's family have been running this restaurant called Corrino's--until her father dies of a sudden heart attack. She's just back from college and has to take over the running of the restaurant. Cue Leto and Paul as the chefs, Vladimir Harkonnen as the maitre d' and Glossu as the bouncer. Margot Fenring is in charge in the bar and her husband, Hasimir, does the accounts. Her siblings keep suggesting changes to the menu, Jessica and Anirul want vegan and vegetarian choices while Piter deVries, a lawyer and a frequent diner, keeps asking for the oddest combinations of foods, just to infuriate Leto and Paul.
1960s Band AU
Paul, Irulan, Chani and Feyd are in a band (up to you who plays what). Glossu Rabban handles security; the younger Corrino girls and Alia handle publicity. Gurney, who's been a famous singer-songwriter, is their mentor; they're trying to get picked up by a big label. Their parents have just about had it with them...
Roaring 20's AU
Shaddam Corrino IV, who heads a stockbroking firm in New York, also owns a string of large warehouses, across the states, bought by his father some thirty years ago. He's been trying to sell them off, to raise money and offset the losses he suffered in the Russian and the European market due to the war and revolution, when he's approached by the Harkonnens. They're into manufacturing steel, mining coal and drilling for petroleum--also saloons and the flesh trade. They'll lease the warehouses from him, using shell companies, to store the liquor they plan to smuggle into the US when prohibition becomes law. Shaddam agrees to this proposal.
But, unknown to Shaddam, the Harkonnens have enemies, FBI agents Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho, who are keeping them under scrutiny. A year after the deal is made, they raid one of the warehouses where the smuggled liquor is stored, just when Glossu Rabban Harkonnen is present to ensure the despatch of goods to their destinations. He is killed and the FBI has a lead. They also find more than liquor in that warehouse--they find drugs.
Meanwhile, Glossu's uncle, Vladimir, is determined to have his younger nephew, Feyd-Rautha, marry into the Corrino family to control the stockbroking firm Shaddam and his forebears built up. The younger Corrino girls are married; Irulan, the eldest daughter, now a woman of 28, has been looking after her father's household and her younger sisters since her mother's death seven years ago. The Baron settles upon her as the bride for his nephew.
When the local FBI station director, Leto Atreides (who is also related to him) begins asking Shaddam questions about the warehouse and its lease, he clams up, just giving Leto the name of the shell company with which he'd signed the contract. He's ready to bail when he learns that both liquor and drugs were found in that warehouse. However, Vladimir reveals he has evidence that could implicate Shaddam in his smuggling operations (tapes of their conversations re the leasing of Corrino warehouses). He says he will not reveal this if he allows his daughter Irulan to marry Feyd-Rautha. Shaddam reluctantly agrees.
When he learns of the Corrino-Harkonnen engagement, Leto begins to investigate the other warehouses Shaddam owns. He also recruits his son, Paul, who's just returned from the war in Europe, to tail Irulan, who might be in danger from the Harkonnens.
Meanwhile, Shaddam asks Hasimir Fenring, his assistant, to investigate Feyd-Rautha. Fenring digs up disturbing details of his sexual proclivities. That's when Shaddam asks Hasimir's wife, Margot, for help and also warns Irulan about what to expect.
Heiress Designate AU
Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV names Irulan his successor and asks all lords great and small of the Landsraad, as well as their heirs designate, to swear their oaths of loyalty to her.
Roman Holiday AU
Historical or modern-day AU
In which Irulan, who's a diligent, hard-working royal, is asked to rest and do something she enjoys for 24 hours. She's been on a whistle-stop tour of Thailand and has had no opportunity to see the sights. She leaves the embassy and falls asleep on a wall, where Paul, a photographer, finds her. Thinking she's drunk, he takes her home. Irulan is supposed to hold a press conference the next morning, which is postponed in her absence. Paul misses the press conference because he oversleeps, but when he sees Irulan's photo, he's certain he can get an interview with her... Follow the plot of Roman Holiday but in a new setting.
University AU
Irulan, Feyd-Rautha, Chani and Paul are at university together. As a princess of House Corrino and heir to the Lion Throne, Irulan has to live within a security bubble, and these three are part of that bubble. So, what's it like living there?
For instance, there are definite social expectations around Irulan's behavior (we're talking a patriarchal society that wants her to be the perfect princess--ladylike and all that). So, Irulan tends to hold back a lot. Also, her parents are a lot like the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip--not really affectionate. So, she's quite emotionally remote.
Paul--despite being a duke's son--had a better relationship with his parents, so less emotionally remote, but there are expectations. Feyd is Paul's mother's cousin on her father's side--he and his brother grew up with Paul and his parents. Paul's maternal grandfather is something of a scandal--unscrupulous in business and his personal life.
Chani is the closest these people come to a regular person--she's the daughter of an environmentalist.
After Kralizec AU
The Bene Gesserit sisterhood bring back Irulan Corrino, to write the history of the Famine Times, the Scattering and the fight against the machines. She gets to interview everyone involved in the final conflict and ask some tough questions. Would love to have her run into Paul on Arrakis--"Of All The Gin Joints In All The Towns In All The World, She Walks Into Mine."
