I will always protect You
Character: Javier Escuella (Red Dead Redemption 2) Summary: Your past is haunting you, but Javier quickly comes to the rescue Warnings: None Author’s note: This is my first scenario in English, I hope you’ll like it! Word count: 1,100

Birds are chirping, the sun is shining, and the lake's water was so tranquil, you almost felt guilty about your sadness. It came suddenly and quickly, and you just felt so heavy as you sat down at the table.
It's been weeks now that you joined the Van der Linde gang, and although almost everyone was so kind and friendly with you, you couldn't get away from your not that distant past. After the O'Driscolls butchered your father, they wanted to murder you too - or even worse. But you got away, and that pissed them off. How could a weakling like you escaped the O'Drisscols? They chased you for days. You left behind your homestead near Strawberry, where you lived your whole life. They followed you to New Hanover, where you lost your horse who was the only living creature from your past. You were alone, and when you thought there's no future, Javier and Charles found you, and after hearing your story, they quickly scooped you up from the dirt and brought you to their camp at Horseshoe Overlook. You swore an oath to Dutch van der Linde, and he said he saw something in you, maybe some potential, some fire, or maybe he thought you are a survivor, just like them. You didn't care about his reasons: you were grateful that you finally had a place you can call home again. And when everything got heated at Valentine, you stayed with them, and now you were sitting at the tables by the lake near Rhodes. It was a beautiful place, everything seemed pretty much peaceful, the weather was great... It supposed to be a good day.
But then the sadness came. You saw John as he tried to have a conversation with Jack, it was so innocent and warm, you felt a pain in your throat. Yeah, he was awkward around him, and Abigail had to intervene since John started to get angry over something meaningless, but in the end... they were family. Something you didn't have anymore.
You felt as a teardrop slide down on your cheek, and you almost let the river run by, when you felt a hand on your shoulder.
'Ey, is everything good, y/n?', asked Javier, and you let out a loud sigh. He was so caring, and not just now, he was like that from the beginning. He always asked how you feel, if you need anything, or just checked on you every once in a while. It felt so great every time, and you were not surprised that you fall in love with this man almost instantly.
'To be honest, Javier, no. But I don't know if I want to talk about it. It's just... I feel alone. I appreciate everyone's kindness, and I know I can talk about my problems like, literally anybody here, but even... I don't know, I just miss my life.'
Javier stood there for a second in silence, and right when you started to feel ashamed talking about yourself again, he smiled softly.
'Don't go anywhere' he said, and you stared after him confused as he walked away. But then he returned with his guitar soon, and you just smiled. Oh, he was so good with his words but even better with his music. You heard him playing his guitar so many times, but he never played anything for you in particular before. You couldn't help but smile - you felt your heart may stop when he started singing in Spanish, so soothing, so lovely that you almost felt as your problems are vanishing slowly.Â
'That was amazing', you said when he stopped, looking at you with a curious smile.
'I know how hard it can be to start a new life.' he said, looking into the distance as he continued with a quiet ballad in the background 'But I'm happy that both of us found a family here.'
'I remember you telling a story about your homeland, in Mexico. You even told us about a monster who feasts on the cattle's blood', you chuckled, so did he. 'You said that your mother tried everything to raise you into a gentleman.'
'And what about your mother?' he asked quickly, almost as he tried to avoid to talk about his family. You understood that very well indeed, this was your first time opening up about your past since you were here at the camp.
'I never knew her' you said as you tried to smile at him 'She left when I was very young, I don't even remember her face that well now. My father raised me. He was a boozer. If I have to think about him, I can't even imagine him without a bottle.'
'Sounds like Uncle to me.'
He tried to cheer you up, and you were so god damn thankful for him.
'Yeah, except on a very rare occasion, Uncle can do something useful', you laughed, then you sighed again. 'After he got murdered, I was so afraid. I never really loved him, but I had some kind of respect for him. And without him, all alone, I felt so helpless.'
'After all, he was your father. But I hope you know, you don't have to be afraid anymore', he said, and he started singing again. This time, you calmed down completely.
'You know what "Te protegere por siempre" means?', he asked as he quoted from the song. 'I will always protect you. And I meant that part. No one can hurt you from now on, and I know for a fact that everyone around here thinks the same. But between us', he winked at you as he leaned closer, 'if you have any problems, or just need someone to talk, come to me first.'
You felt your heart in your throat, but you managed to smile anyway.
'Well, I happen to have a problem', you said, 'We have this beautiful lake here and I haven't seen a proper sunset yet. I had chores, or Sean distracted me with some drunk nonsense and when I had a chance to sit down, it was nighttime again.'
'Oh, if this is what your heart desires, senorita/senor, I would gladly spend my evening, watching the sunset with you.'
And as he said that, he stood up, guitar in one hand, with his other hand reaching out for you. You hesitated for a bit as you felt your legs are already shaking, but then you accepted his hand with a huge smile.
Little did he know the true desire of your heart was him for sure.

GHOST

Chapter 13
After agreeing a set time to meet tonight I turned around to open the door but was pulled back. He convinced me to sit down and talk to him about what was going on. I wasn’t stupid. Not just because he gave me a good time, it doesn’t mean I am willing to open up to him.
“You got assigned another job? Why would you resign? Why-”
“Woah there agent” I hold my hand stopping him mid sentence. “One question at a time.” I fix myself on the chair preparing myself for this conversation. “I can’t tell you every detail but yes” Javier leans back in his seat ready to listen. “Noonan assigned me to Argentina. A form of undercover work”
“For Pablo or another narco organization?”
“No, I don’t know” His eyes shot daggers. It said, No? I don’t know? Then who the hell does? Aren’t you supposed to know before throwing yourself in those kinds of situations? To be honest it was the truth. I didn’t ask questions and it was dangerous but that's how it has always been. But in this case, I couldn’t tell him what it was about. “I don’t get the full run down for my safety”
“Bullshit!” He rolls his eyes. “They don’t give you everything because they don’t want you to say no”
“Javier” He looks back at me. “It's part of my job. I know enough to do it, plus it is my last job with them” It's my turn to relax back on the chair. It finally hit me that I would be able to do whatever I want after this.
“Why?” I shrug trying to get on his nerves and it worked. As he rubs his face he lets out a sigh.
“Noonan broke the agreement and it was a major screw up I couldn’t take lightly” Our heads turned to the door opening and it revealed an agent Murphy.
“Were you two here talking the whole time?” I gave Javier a glare knowing his stupid smirk would follow a snarky response. “Can we talk for a minute?” I find Murphy's eyes.
“No” I shake my head. I stand up grabbing my things.
“Care to put this on hold for Connie?” He whispered as I got closer to the door. I furrowed my brows confused
“She needs someone to talk to and heard you were here so she invited you for lunch” I rolled my eyes but I knew it would be harsh to say no to Connie when she wasn’t involved.
“Fine” With that I push myself out the door.
“I’ll drive you” Murphy lifted his keys. I look back to Javier who was just standing behind him.
“Food? Am coming too” Javier snatched the keys from Steve’s hand, getting a head start towards the car. It was the least amusing situation. We got to the car and I moved straight to the back seat. The driver who I recently got fucked by, was locking eyes with me every other minute in the rear view mirror. But can you blame me? He had pretty eyes. The passenger cost me a job and could’ve cost me a life. He put in jeopardy my work ethic and he had no right to get himself involved like that. The drive down to their house was silent so when Javier put the car in park I was out like a flash. Connie opened the door with a big smile and open arms.
“Hey!” She engulfed me to her side. When I noticed what she was carrying it was too late, it was in my arms now. “Her name is Olivia” She screamed back as she ran back into her house towards the kitchen.
“We are adopting her,” Steve said, moving into the house aswell but not before kissing her forehead hello. I looked down and it was obviously a Colombian baby. Not older than 1. Dark hair and eyes. She was beautiful.
“Come on” I felt a slight push on my lower back and I turned to see Javier there. I slowly move in and hear the door close behind me. The babygirl was wide-eyed looking at my unfamiliar face.
“She’s beautiful” I say walking over to the kitchen to sit on the island chairs. “Her parents-?”
“Yeah” Connie nodded. “She is a pretty little girl who needed a home and I was so happy to be able to give her one” By the middle of that sentence her voice turned mushy and baby-like as she was caressing her face now.
“Being a mom suits you” She whispered a thank you before hurriedly moving to the stove again.
“What are you doing in Bogota?” I turn my head to the boys watching tv but still ear shot away. I stood up, placing Oliva on my hip. I walked over to Connie as she was finishing up the food.
“Came to resign”
“What!” She yelped a little loud for my liking. It made Javier and Steve turn to look at us. “So you are not staying? What are your plans?”
“Yeah, you got the whole parent act down” We chuckle. I look down at Olivia bouncing her as she is starting to get fussy. “Problems at work made me realize it was time for something new”
“So you are thinking of traveling?” She looked over at Olivia and I. “Start a family? Or even settle down?” I shake my head quickly.
“No” I look over and try to find something to settle Oliva down with. “Bottle?” Connie turned and pointed at the cabinet next to the fridge. “I meant a new start to a new career” I pull down a bottle and start making it for Olivia. “Never saw myself as a parent or with someone, atleast not for a couple of years”
“Well I’d say with how easy you are handling an uneasy baby while preparing her bottle without a drop, I think you are ready when you decide to have one of your own” I start shaking her bottle and it's like no one has ever fed this baby before. Her small hands trying to reach for her bottle. Pouting and fussing because the bottle can’t be done soon enough.
“Had a lot of practice. Siblings. Nephews,Nieces, and a lot of family friends kids” I settle Olivia on my lap and handle her strong hands pulling on the bottle.
“You have never mentioned your family?” I look up as she serves the plates.
“Isn’t safe to do so in this line of work” She gives me a sympathetic look coming over to set the food on the table.
“How long has it been?” Since I've seen my grandmother?, a couple days. But the rest of my immediate family?
“6 years”
“Communicated?”
“Once in a while through a trusted contact” She nods understanding there wasn’t much to say about the topic.
“Food is ready boys!” She didn’t even have to wait another second because they were rushing to the table.
“Thanks honey” Steve kisses her cheek and sits down to start eating. I look down, noticing Olivia still with her eyes open.
“Let me settle her in her crib for her nap” Connie comes over but I wave her off.
“Don’t worry I can do it, eat” I can see the exhaustion in her eyes and how tense she was.
“Okay” she smiled, moving to sit beside Steve. “She doesn’t go down easy!” She screamed as I walked over to Olivia’s room. Her room still needs to be decorated but she has her dresser and crib equipted.
“Ready to go night night?” I put her on my chest and pat her back gently trying to burp her. “You have wonderful parents,” I whisper. “ But they choose this pair just for you” I can feel her stir less and her quiet goo’s slowly respond to me. “I know that they will bring you up wonderfully. Loved and treasured for as long as you let them” she responded with a burp but I wasn’t mad, my hand was getting kind of tired. “Ready to sleep?” I cradle her in my arms and start to sway her. She began to shake her head fighting the sleep that wanted to take over her. Surely over the next five minutes she fought strong but allowed sleep to win once again. “Beauty sleep is important, you know?” I whisper as I move over her crib and settle her down. “I’ll see you soon” With one last glance at her I turn around and head down to the kitchen.
“That was quick,” Steve announced, surprised.
“Always been good with kids. They love me”
“Sounds like the opposite to me. She probably fell asleep because it was better than having you hold her” Javier with a stuffed mouth turned to say. I know he was joking but it earned a punch to his arm.
“Shut up and eat your food. You probably spend more time shoving things in you face than actually working”
“I prefer to shove something else in my face but food will do it for now” I didn’t even want to look at him but his hand slipped to lay on my upper thigh and gave it a squeeze.
“Javier! Not in my house with that foul mouth” I chuckle at the scolding Javier was getting as I enjoyed a fresh meal. “So, Y/n?” I look over to Connie as she starts her question. “Change of career? Like what?”
“Teacher” I say noncholant. Not crazy about the kids but I like the idea of teaching
“College?” I can feel the shocked eyes Steve and Javier were giving me.
“Kindergarden” Now their eyes were popping out their sockets.
“Analyst to agent to accountanted to teacher, are you going to tell us your a doctor too”
“Maybe a lawyer?” Steve chuckles when Javiers reponds to his comment.
“Scared to take the bar. I have a doctorate degree in pyscology, so not technically a medical doctor if that's what you mean” Steve’s jaw fell open.

“Dr. Agent. Miss, y/l/n” Javier said trying to piece it all together
“Actually, SSA Dr. y/l/n” I look over with now his jaw on the floor. “But it's too technical, don’t worry your pretty head about it honey” I patted his cheek before continuing eating. The whole lunch we spent talking and laughing like friends who come together every weekend to share their lives. In this time I spent it thinking how it would actually feel. When I was younger as a teen I thought of myself married and traveling the world. Buying a home and enjoying my job. Coming home after a long day and talking to my husband. On a gateway weekend or go hiking with friends. It didn’t involve living a made uo life. Not seeing or having anyone that personal you can go and talk too. Can plan for the future because there is no guarantee there will be one.
“Have somewhere to be or can you stay awhile?” Connie asks as we walk towards the living room and leave the boys to clean up the table.
“I can stay awhile” I send a smile towards her.
“I’ll be back” She quickly says, running to Olivias aid.
“Am going to say goodbye then we can leave” Steve tells Javier as he dries his hand and runs behind Connie. I walk over to the book stand they had by the door and scan my eyes through the pictures.
“Ever see yourself in a white dress” I jump a bit hearing Javiers voice hoovering beside me.
“No” I cross my arms trying to not give into the feeling he always causes me whenever he is near.
“What about with a baby?” He moves closer pressing up against me. One hand falls to grip my hip to pull me flat against him while the other hand points at the picture of Steve’s little family.
“No” I grunt. His loose hand grabs my chin and makes my head turn to look at him.
“I do” I swore there was no stopping my next move. I twisted my body, grabbing fist full of his jacket and pulling him in for a kiss. His hands wrap around me settling themselves on my back to give us stability. Mouth fighting for dominance. “You would look so pretty” He pulled away.
“Shut up” I whisper, pulling him back in. He tasted so sweet. His tongue asked for entrance and I gladly gave in.
“We should go Javier” I turned around in embarrassment to fix myself.
“Thank you for the food Connie” Javier smiles before following Steve out the door. I cooled myself down before sitting alongside Connie on the couch.
“I need your opinion” my mind is still in a haze. I tried my darnest to focus on the words coming out of her mouth. “You are the only one who understands english and knows the kind of work my husband is in” She let out a sigh trying to gather words up.
“Connie,” I whisper, taking hold of her hands. “Is everything alright?” She shakes her head and that's when I notice tears rolling down her face.
“I want to leave this godamn place. Steve is stubborn on catching Pablo but I just can’t do this anymore” She sobs, leaning her head against me. “I wanted to leave before Olivia arrived and now with her, it's all I can think about” She wanted her safe. She wanted her whole family safe.
“You just have to talk to Steve about it. Colombia is not a safe place for a DEA agent’s family. Like it or not if it comes down to it, the narcos are willing to kill anybody” I didn’t know what to say, it wasn’t my place to say anything. But I could tell Connie needed it. “The reason I haven’t talked to my family or seen them is because of my job. It's a lonely job but I prefer to keep them safe. It is also the reason why I don’t plan to start a family anytime soon” Connie sits up wiping her nose and tears. “I see how the work falls on Steve and you being here is the only thing keeping sane and not running towards the bullets like a mad man” I smile hearing a slight chuckle coming from her.
“I know he needs me and being here before knowing he was coming home everyday was all I needed too, but now we have Olivia” We spoke more about her worries and discovered she was scared and anxious. This life gets you that way. She decided to have a talk with Steve as things have started to cool down with Escobar in prison. “So how long are you planning to stay down here for?”
“Am leaving tonight” I took a look down at my purse and saw the plane ticket.
Chapter 14
Family

Javier Pena
Javier never met your family. He didn’t know who they were or how they were. Based on past conversation he knew you loved them dearly, but god if you hadn’t left home you would have gotten yourself in a mental instituted.
“When were you going to tell me your family is in town?” I almost spit my food out. I look over to Javier confused as he looks up from his phone. “Your father just sent me a text for a dinner reservation,” He turned over the phone that had a text from an unknown number. It explained who he was and the time and place for the dinner. I looked out the cafe window taking in a deeo breath.
“I guess he checked my location” I pushed the small dessert away and leaned back cupping my coffee close.
“You share your location with your father?” I look up at him, now he was the one confused. I barely spoke to Javier about my family. The reason was more because It was a breath of fresh air everyday without them. My father was a man of buiness so naturally I seen little of him. My mother was the best part of him so she spent most of her time by his side. My siblings was either parted to be under their shadow or out on their own in another part of the world once they reached a certian age. That was the parts I didn’t tell him. I told him how my father spent any spare time he could with us. How my mother knew me the best and loved me in her own way. How I missed my siblings, cherishing the memories we had when we were small. It wasn’t a lie, but it wasn’t the whole truth.
“Not exactly” I look down again and under the table I turn off my phone. “The hotel we are staying in are some close friends so I am guessing they spoiled the news” I sent him a smile as I felt him becoming bewildered. “We don’t have to go if you don’t want to,” I grabbed his hand from across the two person table.
“Do you want to?” I chuckle trying my damn hardest to make it seem like I was totally okay about the idea. I was hoping for a little bit more time to prepare myself. I didn’t think it was the right moment to introduce Javier to them, but then again it has been 3 years, 3 years since we have been married.
“Of course,” I squeezed his hand. “I don’t want to push you into something” I turn it over to him, maybe he will shake his head and say we could skip this dinner for another time. Maybe when we are 40, 60? Let's say 80 to be safe. I look at him hopeful. I smile as he shakes his head. But he stands up letting go of my hand. He takes out his wallet and pull out some bills before setting them on the table. He puts his wallet back and with a smooth swoop he grabs hold of my hand and pulls me up and out the double doors of the cafe. We walked down the streets of New York, our 2nd stop of this vacation. His hand makes his way across my waist to pull us closer in the cold wind. My mouth is a straight line scared to say something wrong that could lead to an argument or worse, an interigation of my family.
“Listen” He whispers as he grabs on my hips and turns me to face him. “You are going to go into this store,” He points at the one he just made us stop infront of. “You are going to pick out a pretty dress and we are goint to have dinner with your parents” I pouted. I couldn’t avoid this anymore. I look up innocently towards Javi hoping he might change his mind. He lets out a weary sigh. I move my arms around his neck as he pulls us closer by my waist. “After all these years together I learn something new about you everyday,” The pout is gone as I listen close to his words, “Tonight I want to learn where you came from,” One hand moves up to form a hair from my face. “I want to know who raised the woman I fell in love with,” He will be in for a suprise. “I want to know from their perspective who you were as a kid,” He placed a kiss on my forehead, with that I didn’t need anymore convincing. Having Javier there doesn’t sound so bad now because I know no matter what he won’t leave. “I want to show them how much I love you and just how wonderful you are to me” Yeah, I think my mother lost her crown. He is who I dreamed of and prayed for so long. Someone who takes their time to understand me.
“Okay” I smile, pulling away from him. “You had me at pretty dress” He let out a dry chuckle before I dragged him into the store. We began shopping at around 2 and as I screamed out of the dressing room to Javier he announced it was currently 4:23. I mean he should know better right? I wasn’t huge on shopping but when I am nervous I shop. I am a shop addict and currently relapsing. I know I didn’t need all those dresses currently laying beside Javier outside the dressing room but he gave me his card and I was about to go full out. “Honey, when was the reservation?” I slip into what my mind could recall being the 16th dress? And walk out the curtains to show Javier.
“6” He looks up and a huge grin appears. “I don’t care what I said a minute ago” He gets up grabbing my face and pulling me into an intense kiss. “We can forget about the dinner and go straight to the hotel bed” His hands move down to caress my curves until he reaches my hips. I bit my lip holding in the squeal he caused with such a simple action.
“I guess I can be nice enough since you are paying” I sway my hips until we are less than an inch apart. He booped my nose with a wide tooth smile.
“Nice try, I wasn’t serious” The smile died on my face and I rolled my eyes pushing him away.
“You suck!” I throw my hands up in frustration going back to the dressing room. I hear a low chuckle as he settles back on the couch outside. “I hope you enjoy dessert tonight because that is all you are getting-” The curtains fly open and close. I turn around scarred for a moment until Javier has me cornered in the dressing room. Thankfully the curtains covered the room to the floor and hooked on the side so it wouldn’t move. He hand pushed my jaw up to meet our eyes. His other hand removes the other strap I had left. His face moves to the side of my ears and he begins to nibble.
“I guess I will have early dessert than” My hands instantly move to grip his hands in anticipation. My legs rub against eachother already desprate for what he can only give me.
“Javi” I moan pushing my head back to give him more access to my neck. He moves down sucking and bitting. Its like he didn’t fuck me this morning, I could feel my panties being soaked. “Please my love” I whine lowly not wanting to make so much noise but it was impossible. He other hand move down below my back, squeezing and massaging make me let out a uneazy moaned.
“You need to be quieter mi amor” My chest pushed forward involuntarly wanting to follow his lips but when I opened my eyes to whine he was already on his knees. His calloused hands slipped under the long dress to skim up my legs at an infuriating pace. My hands move to grip his beautiful cury hair that I always find when he goes down on me, but only for him to stop them.
“You want to be funny, let's see how fun it is to handle this without something to grip” His stupid grin disapears under my dress.
“Fuck” My head is thrown back as I feel his lips make contact with my skin. My panties were not on for long after that kiss. My hand moved to the walls but I had no grip. The mirror and the wooden walls did nothing to stabalize me. His hands part my legs to give him space to move closer. Fuck, but it wasn’t enough. I could feel his warm breath close to where I needed him but as my hip moved forward a low chuckle left his lips.
“So desparate mi vida” Our moans in sync as his finger moves up to spread clit. “So wet” He hums as his tongue makes a quick and simlple swipe. One of his hands grips my thigh and moves it over his shoulder. “You better thank this pussy for making me happily hand over my card” He gives it a kiss knowing damn well I am on the verge of screaming. My hips wanted to find his lips. I didn’t care how desprate I seemed, I wanted him.
“Baby please” I whine. Fuck I could cry right now. “Forget what I said, I will give you anything tonight” Seems like that was enough reason for him to give me what I wanted right now. “Fuck amor” My hands become warm and sweaty, unable to stay put on the mirror creating a fog on my hand print. His lips started with simple licks before he starts sucking on my clit. Smooth and harshly, who was desprate now? My hand shake wanting to touch him but I couldn’t. One hand gripping the back of my thigh and the other gripped my hip. “So good Javi” I moan throwing my head back and closing my eyes. Feeling how his tough magically worked my pussy. I cover my mouth stopping a squeal of suprise. His tongue fucking my hole in a rapid pace. “Javier!”I groaned. My hands slap agaisnt the wooden and mirror, I didn’t care anymore about the noise. His grip on my skin making it more pleasureable as his pace became harsher. I felt the knot on my stomach increase. “Sigue mi amor” I moaned moving my hips unable to stay put. “You are so good to me” My voice became raspy and breathless. “My sweet husband” I scream feeling him slow our pace but eachtime he fucked his tongue in hard and long. “Fucking hell!” I was cumming. My head moved unable to accept such ecstasy. My nails in pain trying to grip something and my legs shaking. He pushed it wider as he continued to fuck me with his tongue. My hips moving shamfully around his face. I didn’t care if he could breath and by the looks of it, he didn’t either. “Fuck” I let out a long await sigh. My hip jumps unable to resist it as Javier pulls out his tongue and begins to lick my sensative clit.
“I don’t think I need dessert anymore” I chuckle looking down at him still under the dress. I push his head back, not letting him finish. “This was sweet enough for today” I rolled my eyes, grabbing my panties from the floor and throwing them inside my purse. I get out some wipes I had because we weren’t strangers to fucking in public and other suprising places. I looked over to him once I was done and laughed. “What?” He asked, trying to move in to give me a kiss. I place a hand on his chest shaking my head. “Do I have something in my face?” He grins, moving his face side to side. I pull out another wipe and grab his jaw.
“I should let you walk out like that” I warned, unable to stay serious when his eyes stared down at me. Like he wanted to fuck me and god did I want him to.
“And show them how proud I am to be able to have you like this? Make them jealous? I would walk out their head high” I grab his jacket stopping him from walking out.
“Shut up” I finish wipping his face and turn to throw it in the trash. “Now get out and pay for the dress” I let the dress slip out and throw it at him.
“What about the rest outside?” He asks, confused. I sit down on the chair as I start to get dressed again.
“Pick your favorite and leave the rest” I shurg standing back again and move to push him out the dressing room. “We are going to be late” He looks down to check his watch and nods.
“How the hell am I supposed to choose just one?” He groans, turning over to look down at the pile of dresses. I chuckle closing the curtains and getting back to getting dressed. We only had about an hour to get to the hotel, get ready, and meet my family at the restaurant by 6. Thankfully we didn’t get distracted and stood infront of the building 12 minutes after the reservation.
“Name?” The host spoke tiredly as we walked up to the stand. I tell him the name on the reservation and with wide eyes he looks up quickly. “I apologise, I didn’t-” I shake my head
“Everything is okay” I smile. He whispers okay and motions us to follow him. We walked behind him past the crowded dining room and up the stairs to the roof.
“I hope you enjoy dinner with the stars” The host says before opening the glass double doors for us to enter.
“Your father went all out tonight” I looked around the place, just like I remembered it. Window walls and an open skylight. Candles, flowers and every other greenary surrounding the table on the roof. Of course each one of them were empty except for one overlooking the city.
“He tends to do that for people” I hope he didn’t notice the poison that came out with those words. One thing about my father is that he likes to impress. He likes to show how much wonder there is in the world, but never to his family. I turned over looking at Javier eyeing everything he could. “Are you ready?” It was finally time. Time to share Javier with people who felt entitled to everything.
“Yes” I grab on to his extended hand and with a deep inhale we start walking towards the table. I noticed my mother and father laughing and two people sitting infront of them with red wine already in their hands.
“You have to been fucking kidding me” I whispered. It almost made me want to turn around a leave but it was too late once I heard my fathers voice.
“There you are! We never got an answer so we came blindly here” He moves closer giving me a hug.
“Seems like you brought back up just incase” I look over to the poeple sitting infront of them who hadn’t turned around yet.
“Be nice,” My father warned as he pulled away. “You must be Javier” He smiles, going straight for a hug which Javier welcomes. I held in a laugh knowing he wasn’t one to hug.
“Nice to meet you sir, I-”
“No need for formalities, we are family afterall” He laughs patting him in the back before guiding him to the table. “Well I think soon enough we will be, I hope?” Javiers eyes fine mine, unable to hide the confusion. I shake my head moving over to my mothers side.
“Hi mami, I’ve missed you” She hugs me and pulls me over to look at their guest. “It's wonderful to have you two reunited isn’t it?” She smiles looking over to me, giving me a shake. “This is Javier, the man who finally got through this one” I give a fake smile pushing off of her hold. “Nice to finally meet you Javier” She says, taking her seat once again. Before Javier could respond we heard the chair screech beside him. He was currently standing on the other side of the table with my father and someone he will get to know pretty well is not at all a good person.
“The imfamous DEA agent who took down Escobar” She smiles widely, going in to wrap her arms arond his neck and pulling him into a hug. “My name is Amelia, I am the cousin” She pulls away, dragging her hands as slow as possible down his chest before turning over to me with a fake smile. “Nice to see you again”
“Likewise” I smile. I turned over to her husband standing next to her “How have you been Ezra?” I shake his hand as he sends over a smile.
“Company is going great so I can’t complain”
“That's wonderful, how are the kids?” I look over hearing Amelia start her own conversatin with Javier and my parents.
“Wonderful” He lets out a happy exhale. “They always say they grow too quickly but you don’t know it until it happens to you” My face softens hearing how much love he has for his kids. “Tell me you are staying for Lucy’s birthday this saturday”
“Oh yes! You should sweetie, you can introduce Javier to the whole family” My mother pitches into the conversation. I looked over seeing how uncomfortable Javier was.
“I would love to but we only have this trip planned until thursday” Javier looks at me giving me a look. I know what he wanted me to do but I gave him an innocent look faking like I didn’t understand what he was eyeing me to do. “We are on a schedule and everything is booked and paid for” Javier takes this time to walk over to my side and pull out a chair for me. My hand is itching to shake their hands goodbye already.
“Well that is no problem” My father exlaims as we all took our seats around the table. I see him pull out his phone already knowing what he was going to do.
“You don’t have-”
“Don’t be proud” My mother taps my hand lovingly, atleast that's what I know she meant. “Your father is doing something nice so be greatful” I shake my head forcing out a smile.
“There. The best planes, hotels, and activites booked for a later date” I feel Javier squeeze my hand under the table. His gentle touch reminded me I could take a deep breath in and allow things to happen. It wasn’t the end of the world, yet. “So Javier-” The conversation continued without a stop. We ordered our food and as it camed I couldn’t believe how easy it was for Javier to smooth into my family. I stayed quiet, watching the reaction radiate from their faces as Javier spoke about his DEA days. My eyes caught my fathers and his gentle smile could have fooled me. “So you went from a respected DEA hero to now becoming a rancher?”
“Dad,” I warned him. I place my fork down that I have been using to poke around the food on my plate.
“Honey,” My mother says warmly, placing her hand ontop of mine. “He is just asking questions a concerned father would,” I shake my head, removing my hand from her hold. I have seen these conversations start like this millions of times and all those times it has ended in chaos. I go to push my chair back to stand but it doesn’t budge. I look over, noticing Javiers hand grabbing on to it.
“Yes sir. I work in my fathers ranch in Texas. Peacefully and wellfinanced” He turns over to me giving me a reassuring look. “A place we both love,” I look down with a smile admiring how well he responded. “A place I hope to raise a family in” If I had food in my mouth I would have choked, just like my mother did.
“You two aren’t even married, what kind of life would those kids have out of wedlock?” I hear the taunting in Amelia’s voice saying what my parents' eyes were wanting to say.
“I have seen people in marriages who don’t prioritize their kids,” I turn to give her an obvious look “So as long as the parents love them, that will be enough. No need for a piece of paper”
“Well of course you do!” My mother says. “If not for the kids then for your family” She turns over to her father who nods agreeing. “What would people say?” I feel the tense twitch in Javier’s hand.
“My daughter will start a family the right way” There we go. My father always waited for a sign to continue and the dislike in my mother tone gave him the go ahead. “I gave her the privilege of attending the best schools and best programs to improve her career” I take in a deep breath, “I am even allowing her to live in a ranch-”
“Which is below us already” My mother adds
“No daughter of mine will put that humilation on my name, but I am allowing it because one day she will come to terms that it is not a place she belongs” I wanted to slam my fist on the table and tell them off but I watched the reaction on Javiers face. Jaw tense, eyes burning, and his other hand in a fist. “You will be back to claim your position in my company where you belong” He says calmly. He leans back satistficed with his words. With a simple nod I stand up still grabbing onto Javiers hand.
“I am where I belong,” I stare deeply into my parents eyes. I didn’t owe Amelia an explanation to waste energy on her. “I am grateful for everything you have provided me but since day one I told you I wanted nothing to do with it. I took business classes, marketing, and even majored in electrical engineering to make you happy but never promised to step foot in your company” I let out the breath I was holding in. “I have built my own name no matter how small it is compared to yours” I grab my things ready to turn around and leave.
“Fine,” My mother stands up in her spot. “If you walk out those doors you will be leaving this family for good. You have always been an ungrateful girl. When you decided to leave after graduating from college. Take that job in teaching.” She huffs, shaking her head. “Deciding to move to Colombia of all places, but you know what your worst disappointment of all was?” She walks around the corner of the table to stand in front of me. “Choosing a man who probably only wants you for your money, you will see once you marry him that he would take the first opportunity and dump you” My eyes threaten to fill with tears, how wouldn’t such words hurt? They were my mothers. I walk closer not wanting to give her that satisfaction of seeing me cry or flich at her intimidation.
“He hasn’t done it yet, and he has had 3 years to do so,” Her eyes widened in shock. “And I know he wouldn’t take the first chance to run because I choose to marry him for love” I adore my parents, they work well together but one thing I would never forget is what my mother told me at a young age. I walked closer whispering in her ear, “You married my father for his money, because you wanted a better life. I have a better life because of him, I don’t need the money” I pull back seeing her mouth shut at my confession.
“You will see once you have children that they deserve better” I turn around angrily.
“My children will have the best of both of us,” I say, holding on to Javiers hand. “That's all they need” I turned around to walk away but I couldn’t end it like this. I turned to look at Javier who gave me a look. A look I can always count on when I am in a hard place. A look that tells me he is with me every step of the way. So I stop in my tracks and turn around one last time. “I hope they get the chance to meet their grandparents one day.” I look over to my father who has blank eyes as his hands hold on to the table. “You know where to find me” Holding tightly for support I walk out the restaurant with Javier. As we step outside I stop looking up. The sun was now gone and the stars in full display. I close my eyes feeling the wind hit my face letting in cold air through my lungs. My shoulder drops, feeling the weight of worry fall. I no longer had to carry my parents guilt, I no longer had to hide them from the person I love most. “Can we go to a bar?” I turn my head a bit watching Javier looking at me.
“Sure Paris Hilton,” He snatchs my hand up again with a smile leaning us to a bar close by. “Why didn’t you tell me who your parents were around here?” He asked calmly.
“Because if I started talking about them and what they did you would want to meet them and you saw how that went” I say in a monotone voice. Suddenly I realised I didn’t feel the slight tug on my heart when I spoke about them. It didn’t hurt anymore.
“Hey” He pulls me back, placing his hand on my back pulling me close. “I’m sorry if I pushed you to do this” His hand instantly grabs my face making me focus on him.
“It was bound to happen one day” I kissed the palm of his hand enjoying his company, or more so that he didn’t run away after all of that. “They always had closed opinions and that is the main reason I am happy to have found you” I smile wrapping my arms around his neck. “I hate to say it but it's Karma to them” I look up proudly at him. I peck his lips quikly and pull away. “Come on let's get you something to drink” I motioned for him to continue walking. “You can have a drink for me too, since I can’t have any for another couple of months” I hear a snicker from behind me before he shows up beside me with a
grin.
“You were the one begging for it” I turned slightly, giving him a hit on the shoulder.
“Shut up! You were the one begging for it” I rolled my eyes walking a bit faster and into the bar. “Order me the usual” I tell him heading into the bathroom. I watch as he goes up the bar and with a stupid loving smile I go in. As I finish my business I hear my phone ringing. “Hello?” I answer without looking at the caller id.
“Hey,” My head lifted up, shocked and a little embarrassed. “Listen, I just wanted to see how you were going and let you know that I support you,” His voice was low, probably hiding from Amelia.
“Thanks Ezra. Everything is fine,” I try to sound happier. “I will even be there saturday”
“Really?! That's great, I am glad everything is okay” I don’t know why it came out but it was too late to take it back. I finish talking with Ezra and with a last look at the mirror I walk out. Nerves start to hit once again as I catch Javier’s eyes. With a smile nod he points at his glass. Those nerves went straight to the trash as I know that I have nothing to worry about.
“This is my third one mi vida” he puts the glass down proudly.
“And your last” I grin leaning back on my seat. I look in front of me and my usual plate is there.
“Okay, I have to get my precious family home safe” he smiled looking over at me. At that moment I was sure of my actions. I hated to end things like that with my parents but that’s it how it was supposed to end I guess. As I look over to Javier who was explaining something he read in a baby book about eating too much spicy food I get up from my chair and take a seat on his lap. It was my own family I needed to take care of now.
