short (kind of): there’s more to practice than doing something repeatedly, it’s also learning new things, problem solving, and honest critique. Each of those is its own skill…also be nice to yourself!

Not to be furiously antimodern but everything you make is art and you can minimize it all you want by calling it a hobby or a craft or a hyperfixation but it’s art because you created it and humans just make art because it’s what we do and it can’t be good or bad because it just IS and when you make art you are part of something very beautiful and very human

It's been A WEEK since I last read a fic guys help me

You are a good artist and I wanna ask you. How did you learn how to draw and how long did it take for you to be a good artist?

Honestly (and I know you’ll probably roll your eyes at this) it just took practice for me to get where I am. I’ve been drawing for all my life, because it’s something I love to do. It relaxes me, entertains me, and gives me a creative outlet. When I was younger I would try so hard to draw like all of the artists I saw online, but I never could. I got so frustrated so many times, and though that I’d never improve. But no matter how upset I got, I never stopped drawing. I couldn’t! It was literally one of my only real hobbies.

I kept drawing. Eventually, I got Instagram and Tumblr. I began posting (but I didn’t really get any likes, comments, or follows). I was disheartened, but I didn’t stop. I kept drawing and kept posting. Eventually I got a couple follows and a few likes, and it was all I needed to keep pushing. The more art I made, the more I improved. I finally began developing my own style, after years of copying the styles of other artists (not stealing, though, just mimicking) and the more I drew the better my style became.

All I could say to you is practice and don’t give up! You won’t learn to draw like your favorite tumblr artist in a day. It takes time, years even, but if art is something you like to do then do it! The biggest reason I stuck with art was because I genuinely enjoyed doing it, even when my art wasn’t perfect. If you’re the same, then I’d say focus on creating art. Don’t worry that it isn’t perfect, or gaining you followers, or looking like the art you see online. If art makes you happy, focus on that. Improvement will follow.

I hope good things will come to all of you that need something good to happen... I haven't been having the best time as of late, but despite that, there has been some good things happening in my life and I'm very grateful for the people that have stuck around and made me feel better about myself with each passing day.
