kageyama woke up with a slight skip in his steps.
it was december twenty-second, his birthday. that alone was not enough to bring the buzzing excitement in his veins. however, there was something that awaited him and that made him flutter in raw anticipation. heck, he was probably more excited for this than the actual christmas day. he hadn't been able to keep still since yesterday, even hinata called out the strange light in his eyes that seemed to mirror the ocean waves in a jolly, summer morning.
kageyama tried to hide the giddy giggles that somehow managed to rise up his chest. hands trembling ever so slightly, he reached out to the mailbox, shoving away the bills to pick up the distinct, familiar red envelope that rests at the bottom of the pile. forget breakfast, he thought as he walked past the small cozy kitchen of his home. this was just a bit more important. he lightly shook his head at the out-of-character notions he has been making since his day started but who can blame him?
carefully, he tore the envelope open and with all grace, lifted the stationery inside. lo and behold, his annual birthday postcard from you. the front of the card showed an almost meme-like illustration of a mischievous santa claus with messy cursive writings at the bottom that read: 'don't tell jesus but santa also likes to celebrate your birthday.' kageyama smiled at the thought of you and your cheesy laugh as you tried to find the perfect card for him. only you would give him something like this.
his eyes scanned the contents of your letter. each word well-read and taken into heart. you talked about your roommates' plans, your mother's special dish that made you a few grams heavier, and above all, how much you wanted to be by his side. he sighed as he pulled the card close to his chest as his body falls back into his bed. he wanted that too.
having a long-distance relationship was hard and more often than not, it hurt. kageyama wanted to feel your skin touching as you walked side by side, pinkies linked. he wanted to see you belt out your favorite song just a key too low as you swing your hips to the beat, without a care in the world. he wanted to breathe in your scent, shampoo long faded into a lingering soft scent. he wanted you but he knew he couldn't.
kageyama closed his eyes, hiding away the oceans deep worth of longing they held. regret sunk his heart, mellowing down the excitement he initially felt earlier. he wished he held you more. he wished he didn't ignore you when you wanted to cuddle. he wished he said 'i love you' more. he wished he gave you more gifts. he wished he swallowed his pride and embarrassment while you were still in arms reach. he wished you were here.
the sudden sound of knocking made him stand up from his position in the bed. he half-expected it to be the boys from the volleyball club but he was unsure if they would actually come to his home given his reputation as the 'resident grump' alongside tsukishima. he muttered a small 'wait a minute' before he opened the door. halting in his steps, mouth wide open and breath stuck in his throat, he stared.
they say that once in a while, you do actually get what you wish for.
you were as bright as ever, as you stood there in front of him in flesh— as if you never left, "hi there!"
"hah," for the first time in a while, kageyama smiled. a wide, childish, genuine one. eyes crinkled shut with just the hint of them misting over, "hello."
kageyama slept that night with his heart full of gratitude and his arms, of you.
