►Hinata and Kageyama have a frenemy-like relationship◄
▶They compete with each other often, even over trivial things such as who gets to the gym first; they also keep a tally of their wins. They argue with each other often and sometimes have full-blown fights, but they see each other as teammates. Whenever someone brings up Kageyama’s past, Hinata would stand up for Kageyama; whenever Hinata feels down about his height and role as a decoy, Kageyama would encourage him and remind Hinata of his importance to the team. Out of everyone in the club, Kageyama and Hinata seem to understand each other the most and are often called the “freak duo”. They are usually, if not always, with each other when it comes to volleyball-related activities◀
Request by shahdaryu
you’re suffering alone
prompt: “kageyama knows you as his little ray of sunshine, but what does he do when he finds out how you really feel?”
pairing: kageyama x female! reader
word count: 3k
warnings: MAJOR tw!!! depression, again major tw self harm, reader cries a lot when kageyama finds out, reader’s mom is dead lol i went all out
genre: fluff, angst
you were always their little ray of sunshine
when you first joined the school a year ago and introduced yourself all excitedly
hinata ran to tanaka after that class
“we need to convince her to be our manager!!!!”
tanaka was down lol
it didn’t take long to convince you, you were looking for extracurricular activities to engage in anyway
the conversation went a bit like this
“y/n-san! do you want to be karasuno’s volleyball team manager?”
“sure!”
“we swear it- did you just say yes?”
“...yes”
cue tanaka and hinata screaming
after you became their manager it didn’t take you and kageyama too long to fall in love either
he adored the good vibes you brought with in any room you stepped in and you enjoyed the calmness that came with him (except when hinata’s around to annoy him, pretty boy radiates ᵃⁿᵍʸ energy then lol)
poor boy didn’t know that what he felt towards you until he had the whole team screaming at him to ask you out
so he did
and so you ended up here, 10 months into dating kageyama and 12 months into being karasuno’s manager along with kiyoko and hitoka
everyone found it a little weird that you were always the one to stay the longest out of everyone, but everyone assumed it was just because you genuinely enjoyed being there
which you did, don’t get me wrong
that just wasn’t the only reason.
no one actually knew why you had changed schools in the middle of the year
every time someone asked you pushed it off, claiming your old school just wasn’t working out and started babbling about how much you love being at this school and how glad you are to have found real friends like them
“time for a break, i brought food!!”
you held the bags of food up, getting tackled in a gross sweaty hug by nishinoya
“it’s like you heard my stomach calling out for you, y/n!!! you’re my saviour!!!”
you immediately laughed
“i know, noya, now get off, you’re sweaty” you cringed a little and he got off, a little offended but he quickly forgot about it and snatched the bags
you were all sat on the ground, everyone eating quietly when hinata started complaining about his mother nagging him to focus a little more on studying
that’s how everyone started talking about their mothers, somehow everyone having a little to complain about
“what ‘bout you, y/n? you have nothing to remark about your mom like our little crybabies here?” daichi looked at you
everyone whined at that,, “we’re not babies!!”
you tensed up at the question before relaxing and smiling
“nope! my mom is perfect.” you giggled
“woah, i wish!! you need to introduce me to your mom, y/n!!”
noya was very invested in your mom being perfect, lol
you see
kageyama here is very observant, whether it be on the court or just, well, people in general
he saw you tense up for that split-second, not pressing it further
he knows you most likely aren’t ready to talk about it
now that he thinks about it, you never talk about your family
he’d love to know but he understands that you’ll come to him when you’re ready to tell him and he doesn’t want to make you uncomfortable by nagging you about it
“i’ll introduce you to her, noya” you giggled
his face lit up and he nodded before the topic changed again and you could now also speak to them about how annoying and hard math class is
fr tho i hate math
after they were done eating no one could move anymore, let alone practice
hinata tried
keyword tried
he threw up....
no one else even wanted to practice after that - opting to clean up and end practice for today instead
“kageyama, ill head out a bit early today, i’ve got some stuff to do” you said
you startled the shit out of him because he was just bringing the last volleyball to the cart
“HO- oh.” he stopped himself from screaming and turned to you
“alright, just take care..” he mumbled, ruffling your hair which made you whine and fix it
you hate when he does that
he thinks your reaction is adorable
you scoffed and pulled him down to your height to plant a little kiss on his cheek
he blushed, pda isnt for him
you loved his soft side so much
nonetheless he smiled at you and straightened up again
“call me if anything happens” he cleared his throat
baby was a little awkward with stuff like this
you didn’t mind though
you nodded and smiled “will do!”
and off you were lol
hinata then popped up infront of kageyama
“what’d you do to her!?!?!?! she never leaves early!!!!!!!”
kageyama pushed him away by the head
“she just has stuff to do, shut up.”
“hey, mom..” you smiled lightly as you sat down
“nishinoya is really looking forward to meeting you! the whole team asked about you today.. today was an ok day, i was pretty distracted all day so i didn’t have the time to feel sad again.”
...
you sighed
“but, you know, it’s been getting harder lately. it seems that getting out of bed to get to school is getting harder.. i love making everyone happy, but it’s hard being the provider and never getting something in return. sometimes, when things get hard, i just want to drop everything. i want to stop acting so bubbly and happy, but i know you wouldn’t want me to lose my smile.”
you stood up
“i’ll get going then, i love you.”
you placed the flowers down on the grave before you, staring down at it with a sad smile before making your way home, yet again
the next day you showed up to school as you usually did, taking your seat next to kageyama after greeting him like usual
you were having a conversation with hinata
it was too early for kageyama to speak
everyone was confused when you didn’t show up to practice that day
kags(。◝‿◜。) , 2:47pm: are you not coming to practice?
y/n, 2:49pm: no baby, i’m sorry :( i really can’t tODAY, im so upset over it
kags(。◝‿◜。), 2:50pm: did something happen?
kags(。◝‿◜。), 2:53pm: y/n?
y/n, 3.26pm: nope, i just have some stuff to do at home (╥﹏╥)
the next day you showed up like usual again, this time attending practice too
just like that the days seemed to go by in a blur for you
day by day you felt yourself breaking more
day by day the scars on your hips multiplied
and day by day it got a little harder to make the room light up when you stepped inside
it was after practice and it was only you, nishinoya and kageyama left
“hey, y/n, can i finally meet your mom today??”
he was pressing around so much about it
you smiled and shrugged,
“sure, i bet she doesn’t mind a visit”
“can i come too?” kageyama asked timidly and you nodded
“of course.. it’s about time.” you smiled
your eyes were a little glassy
he frowned
nishinoya was too busy getting excited over meeting the first ever perfect mother to notice and he began dragging you out “let’s go then!”
he was pulling you to the direction of your place before you abruptly stopped
“ah-ah, i didn’t say i still live with her, did I?”
you had both boys confused now and you started walking into the right direction
you intertwined your fingers with kageyama’s
he squeezed your hand a little
he knew you needed a little support
only did he not expect you to lead them to the cemetery
nishinoya’s smile dropped when you actually entered the cemetery
he saw it but he expected you to walk past
you stopped in front of your mothers grave
“there she is.” you let out a sigh
kageyama felt his heart drop
“wait, y/n, i’m so sorry for pressing this so mu-”
kageyama pulled you in a tight hug, shaking his head at the boy, who now went quiet
he felt so horrible
you were trying so hard to hold your tears back, looking at noya
“don’t worry, you didn’t know.”
you still smiled at him
kageyama then spoke
“it’s best if you go home, don’t you think?”
he didn’t even sound angry at this point
nishinoya nodded and left
he really felt so bad
you couldn’t hold back and broke out in tears after
this was the first time you cried in front of your boyfriend
he didn’t expect it to hurt this much
hearing your little sobs break through you
he could feel his own heart breaking as he tightened the hug
neither of you said anything
he just let you cry into his chest
he didn’t need to tell you he was there for you with words
he told you through gently patting your back as you cried
he told you through not judging you when you cried like this
even when it started raining and the rain was slowly seeping through both of your clothes he didnt loosen his grip on you
he let you finish crying
however long it took
and when you finally looked up at him, only the moon’s light illuminating your face, he felt his heart break, again, at the sight of your puffy eyes and red nose
he wanted to protect you from all bad things, forever.
“gosh, i’m sorry, it took me so long to stop crying..”
he shook his head and pecked your forehead quickly “no. you didn’t.”
“..is this why you always avoided talking about your mother?”
you nodded, looking down at her grave, the flowers you placed there two days ago already droopy
you then looked up at him again
“thank you, for.. supporting me..”
nishinoya apologised about 27 times when he saw you
you kept reassuring him that it was alright but he felt so bad
he felt so bad he couldn’t even properly play that day
daichi sent him home early
“come back when you dont have two left legs!!!”
practice ended soon after that anyway
you sat on a bench, filling out the last bits of your homework so you didnt have to do it at home, not even noticing that it was just you and kageyama left until he called out to you
“hey, y/n, mind throwing me some balls? i’m not tired yet and i want to keep practicing”
you happily helped
you admired his determination to get better daily
it was refreshing, seeing him so passionate about volleyball
how couldn’t you help when he asked like that
that’s how he was now practicing as you were talking
“can you come over tonight?”
you furrowed your brows
“but it’s a school night?”
he shrugged “i don’t care. you haven’t been at my place for three entire weeks! i only see you at school, i miss you.” he was honest
he really missed you and he wanted to know what was up with your lame excuses every time he asked
you then nodded
“alright then, i’ll come.”
whilst he was busy drinking water you tried ‘passing’ the ball (at which you horribly failed)
“look, i’m a better setter than you!”
he chased you down lol
you took him by surprise when he finally caught you, grabbing onto your hips, followed by a loud intake of breath and a wince from you
fuck
well
he obviously immediately let go
“y/n. what’s wrong?”
you sighed and turned towards him
“um.. i.. hit my hip earlier today..?” you trailed off and he immediately knew that you were lying
honestly, he kind of had an idea of what it was
he just didn’t want to think of that possibility
he might be a bit slow, but he’s not stupid
he has a slight idea why you haven’t been coming over
he notices how the circles under your eyes have gotten darker
he notices how you sleep in classes, which is something you never do
and he’s so, so worried
but he’s scared to approach you
he’s scared to confirm his worst fears
he shook his head at you “don’t lie.”
you sighed softly “kageyama, it’s nothing.”
you avoided his gaze and he shook his head again, now unable to hold back from speaking
“no, y/n. you’re not okay, i know you’re not. i know that you struggle every day and i know you don’t like speaking about it, but i just can’t keep watching you suffer in silence, i do give you your space, but not when it truly concerns your well-being to the point i cant touch you or see you as often as i’d like to!”
he stopped and took a deep breath, shaking his head
“let’s go home first, i want to talk about this in a place i can do more for you.”
you were speechless
you never had expected him to notice anything, let alone speak up about it
you were so lost in thought you let him drag you to his room quietly
you snapped back to reality when he was unlocking his door, walking inside when it was open - you following
you sat on his bed, still not knowing what to say
how the tables turn, usually its kageyama being the quiet one and you being the one to fill the silence with unnecessary babbling lol
he looked at you, uncertainty swimming in his eyes
“can i see?”
you immediately knew what he was talking about, looking down
you pondered over it a little before nodding
he crouched down before you, looking up at you
“you know you can trust me, right?”
you furrowed your brows “of course”
“you don’t need to hide your feelings from me, baby, i love you through all of your emotional states, i love seeing you happy but i like comforting you when you feel sad too, you mustn’t hide your feelings.”
your eyes filled with tears at that one sentence
i love you through all of your emotional states
“thank you..” you sniffled
“i mean it. it hurts me when you hide it, it makes me feel so helpless, i don’t want to watch you crumble before my eyes, please, talk to me..”
“i just feel so hopeless, kags.. my heart feels so dull lately.”
you finally let in
“it feels like every single day repeats itself and all of my responsibilities are so hard to fulfill..it’s so hard turning up to school, bringing positive energy with me when all i feel is my sadness taking over my entire self bit by bit.”
he was listening, now sat on the floor before you, chin resting on your knee as you spoke
“but you’re not responsible for anyone’s happiness except yours. i don’t like when you prioritise others before yourself, y/n.. i don’t say it often but you’re truly so important to me and i don’t want you to lose yourself only because you try to make others happy.. it isn’t worth it, we love you for you, i can assure you, no one from our group would judge you for feeling down, we all have bad days, gosh, we all have bad weeks or even months! hiding these feelings will only worsen your pain and lead you to.. do irrational things..” he said, fingertips tracing over your hip gently
“let me see first and then we’ll talk about how we’re fixing this, ok?”
you sniffled and nodded, letting him pull the side of your pants down enough to reveal to him what he feared most
seeing the cuts scattered on your skin broke him, truly.
he gulped and stood up, leaving to get you a pair of his shorts
“put these on, this way i can tend to them better.” he said, wanting to clean it up first before telling you his thoughts about it
you nodded and changed into the shorts, him trying not to break down there and then as he left to get some stuff
when he came back you were patiently waiting for him and let him clean the cuts with some alcohol (not without complaining at the stings) before he bandaged them up as best as he could
he then laid down and pulled you with him, hugging you
“oh my precious y/n..” he mumbled
he was hugging your head to his chest to hide the fact that he was tearing up
he wanted to help you so bad but he knew exactly that he couldn’t just end your suffering and it hurt him
“but why? why do you do that to yourself?”
his voice cracked when he asked and you looked up, realisation hitting you
you hurt him so bad by doing this.
the person you loved and cherished most
“it felt like the only escape”
he caressed the top of your head
“pressuring you into stopping won’t help and isn’t worth it, but please, when you feel like.. doing that, call me instead. i’ll be at your place in no time and- even if you don’t want to talk i can just hug you and keep you company-”
you cut him off by pressing your lips against his
“i will, baby. i’ll call you whenever i feel down from now on”
he nodded “thank you”
he was thanking you as if he wasn’t the one helping you right now
you now hugged him back, “i’m sorry for not saying earlier..”
he hummed “lets just lay here. you’ll get better, i promise.”
he kept his promise
ever since that day, he’s been calling you morning and night, making sure you felt good waking up and going to bed
he often called you through entire nights
he made you slowly start to understand that your purpose wasn’t to make anyone happy but yourself
he made you realise you were more than a mere person that’s always happy
and he made you understand that showing your feelings wasnt something to be embarrassed about
(the entire team was very supportive too when they found out you were struggling! kageyama didn’t explain the details though)
so yep.
you had kageyama and a bunch of friends that were supporting you
and for the first time, you felt hopeful for the future, your mother watching over you proudly after years of struggling and even having to move schools for a fresh start
she could now rest easily, knowing your guardian angel found his way to you and won’t ever leave you.
a/n: YALL I MADE MYSELF EMO WITH THIS ONE:( i hope you enjoyed it & please leave comments about it!
they find out you play the drums
prompt: “you invite them out to a new bar that recently opened, stating the band there was really good, but the last thing they expected was seeing you on stage.”
includes: tobio kageyama, kozume kenma, tetsuro kuroo
warnings: none except occasional swearing!
a/n: AYE my first headcannons :D i came up with this idea listening to paramore lmao i just need to get it out of my system, enjoy!
tobio kageyama
when you came up to him and begged him to visit the new bar, he didn’t even think about denying you
simply because 1. your face was too cute and 2. you havenT BEEN SPENDING ENOUGH TIME WITH HIM; HE MISSES YOU >:(
so you two went together the following friday
you were vibrating in excitement already,, it was so hard not telling him but you wanted to see his raw reaction
you two made yourselves comfortable, ordering drinks before you excused yourself
“I have to use the restroom, I’ll be right back, kags” you said, pecking his nose, which obviously made him scoff but he nodded
when the band was announced, you were still not back and he was kind of upset but also kind of worried because??
did you ditch him??
did someone kidnap you??
but he didn’t have enough time to ponder over it because the music soon started
and there you were.
sat behind the drums.
his eyes nearly popped out of his sockets at the sight. you looked so fucking badass.
he didn’t pay attention to the bassist or singer
his eyes were trained on you the entire time, every hit against the drums resonating through his ears
as if that wasn’t hot enough, you should’ve seen his face when you took over, playing louder than the singer and bassist, all of the attention now on you
he couldn’t help but scoff at the amount of men eye-fucking you
after the little concert was over he immediately walked over to you
“how could you hide that masterpiece from me?!”
kozume kenma
now for this baby, it was a bit harder to get him out of the confinement that was his four walls
after literal WEEKS of persuading him, you still couldn’t convince him LMAO
you made kuroo drag him to the bar.
so there he sat, waiting to be finally able to go home to get to his precious handheld console again
kenma does NOT like loud sounds or places with many people overall, so it only added to his horror as soon as your band was announced
as soon as the lights went off and the stage lighting turned on, he looked in that direction
you were sat in the middle, behind some drums, dressed in all black attire
his eyes widened and his jaw dropped, kuroo having to push his mouth back shut
he watched you perform in awe
he found himself actually enjoying it, especially when it was your turn to steal the spotlight with your skills
after the performance he patiently waited for you to approach him, finally doing so after signing a few autographs
“if you told me, i would’ve agreed to come earlier..”
tetsuro kuroo
kuroo was actually the one to ask you to go to the new bar
the universe was working in your favour lmao
almost as soon as you arrived at the bar you excuse yourself, leaving a confused boyfriend behind
confused boyfriend! turned into hypeman! boyfriend as soon as he saw you on the stage
“THAT’S MY PARTNER RIGHT THERE!”
“don’t look at them like that, they’re mine!”
“MY BABY IS SO TALENTED!”
well he definitely wasn’t embarassed to show you off
seeing you up there, dancing along to the music as you played looking so, so cool, just made his heart swell and his cheers got louder
at some point he got the whole bar to cheer for you too
he couldn’t help it!! you just looked so happy when you heard the cheers!
you bet your ass he will come to every single performance from now on
after you were done he calmly escorted you away from the piles of people wanting you to sign something for them
“didn’t know you had it in you, baby!”
he kissed you to show everyone who you belonged to
a/n: i feel like ive let ya down with this one, oh well! plsplspls send requests!! i need to get around to making a navi/about me these days.

This was a quick doodle for a discord friend but I feel like I had to share it with all the Kageyama simps, stans, and kinnies out there. For YOU? I offer sleepy Kags. Enjoy.

Look at my precious boys. I love them each individually so much. Their so adorable I cAnT!!!

Previous///Next

Tonight is a special night because it’s ‘Create Your Own Onigiri’ night! Your boss decided to hold this small event to try something new and allow his customers to have some fun in the process. There are laminated onigiri instruction sheets on each of the tables as well as a small customized menu created for this event specifically. You helped him post a couple announcements on social media about the event a week prior to inform the public, and so far, things have been going smoothly.
Osamu is mainly in the kitchen prepping any ingredients for the customers and you’ve been standing at the register as usual. You are pleasantly surprised at how much everyone was enjoying making their own onigiris, and it seems like people of all ages were having fun.
“Welcome to Onigiri Miya!” You greet automatically with a bright smile as the front entrance slides open. A group of very physically fit men walk into the shop with large sports duffel bags slung across their shoulders. Despite the slightly intimidating aura the group gave off, one of the males walked inside with a young child hugging his arm. You scan over all of them briefly and your eyes widen as you make eye contact with Ushijima whom you just met a little over a week ago when the Shiratorizawa alumni visited.
You gave the tall volleyball player a small smile. “Hey, Ushijima-san! What brings you back so soon?”
“You assured me that I should bring my team, and we all wanted to participate in the event today,” Ushijima responded back. “My teammate, Romero-san, is not from Japan, so we wanted to find a restaurant with traditional food.”
“R-right…” You didn’t expect him to actually bring his team any time soon, but you’re still amused at how seriously he took your words from before. You can assume that the only foreigner in the group is the ‘Romero-san’ that Ushijima spoke of. There are probably hundreds of other restaurants the group could’ve gone to for a more cultural experience, so you’re a little giddy that he chose to come here. “Well, it’s good to see you again! I’d be more than happy to help your team have a good time here.”
To Ushijima’s left, another tall figure stood with a resting scowl. His gaze made its way to the kitchen where Osamu was and immediately lit up in recognition. Although, there might’ve been some confusion. “Miya-san, I didn’t know you worked here. Don’t you have practice right now?”
Your boss lets out a short laugh as he looks over his shoulder to look directly at the boy who spoke to him. “Wrong twin, Kageyama-san.”
“Ah.”
Kageyama looks down and glares at the floor mildly distressed at his mistake. There’s a part of you that wants to laugh at his reaction, so you do so internally. Suddenly, you feel someone staring at you, so your eyes shift over in that direction to a male with white hair and round eyes. His stature and overall mannerisms reminded you of a certain orange haired ball of sunshine, so you couldn’t help but stare back a bit longer than you intended. There was a sudden shift in his demeanor and his eyes narrowed at you.
“Why you staring? Is it ‘cause you’ve never seen a volleyball player my height? You’re impressed by the Hoshiumi Korai, right?” The boyish male lifted up his hands as if trying to intimidate you, but in your eyes, he seemed completely harmless.
With a sweet smile, you calmly reply back to his accusations. “Sorry about that. You just remind me of a good friend of mine. He also plays volleyball, and you’re both around the same height. I haven’t seen you play before, but I’m sure you’ve worked hard to get to where you are now regardless of your height, Hoshiumi-san.”
You know you’ve startled him with your kind and composed response when he freezes in place for a couple seconds before dropping his arms back to his sides abruptly and looking away to hide a small grin.
The last two people in the group, whom you assume are father and son, seem to be in their own worlds as they converse quietly. Now seems like a good time to let everyone get settled in, so you step away from the register and gesture for them to follow you. “ My name is (Surname) (Name). You guys can follow me! There’s a table over there that can fit all five of you. Then, I can explain how things are gonna work for today.”
Once the guys all settle in, you stand at the end of the table and point at one of the instruction sheets as well as the menu. “You can pick 2-3 ingredients for your onigiri! One of the ingredients will include meat or seafood and anything else can be a vegetable, seasoning, or both. All of the prices are written down on the menu and there are written instructions on how to make your own onigiri with pictures as guides. Feel free to call me over if you need clarifications. Any questions?”
Multiple heads shake at the same time. You pull out a tiny notepad and pen from your pocket and prepare to take orders. “Great! Then, what can I get for you guys?”
Romero lifts one of his arms to get everyone’s attention and begins to speak somewhat broken Japanese, “Order whatever! I will pay!”
After that declaration, you jot down all of the ingredients that the group orders including some refreshments. “Alrighty! We’ll set up all your ingredients soon on the counter. Once everything’s ready, there’ll be trays for you to take back to your table.”
You bow your head and stroll back behind the counter to relay the order to Osamu. As you’re helping set up some ingredients that don’t require any cooking, you notice that your boss frequently steals glances at the volleyball team with starstruck eyes and curiosity pokes at your mind. “What’s got you looking excited like a kid on Christmas?”
Osamu quickly turns around to face you while holding a spatula in one hand and tongs in the other. Leaning down to keep the conversation between the two of you, he unconsciously lifts both kitchen utensils up in the air with enthusiasm and flashes a childlike grin. “That’s Nicolas Romero! He’s a really famous world class volleyball player from Brazil. My brother and I used to watch him on TV all the time when we were younger, so it’s kind of crazy to see him in person!”
There’s a slight leap in your heart as you watch Osamu’s eyes brighten in joy but choose to ignore that strange feeling for the time being. “Now that you mention it, I think I saw a couple posters and billboards with his face on them when I was in Brazil.”
“I was really surprised when ‘Tsumu told me he was coming to Japan to play for the Schweiden Adlers. I never thought he’d come to my restaurant though!” Your boss is quite awestruck at the idea that such an important figure from his childhood was about to eat food that he cooks himself and it’s enough to elicit a giggle from you.
It’s not long before all the ingredients are set up on four large trays along with a couple beverages. You face the group of males and raise a hand next to your mouth. “Order’s ready for Romero-san!”
Romero stands up from his seat and pats his son on the head to stay put before gesturing at Kageyama to follow him. “Tobio, help me bring the food?”
“Of course, Romero-san!” The setter shoots up from his spot with a zealous expression and immediately follows behind his teammate like a baby duckling. When the two arrive in front of the counter, they give you a short thanks and take their trays back to their table. Osamu subtly glimpses at his childhood idol but quickly looks back down with a flustered expression when he notices you sending him a smirk of your own.
With everyone pretty much settled in, you decide to walk around to the other tables to see if anyone needs any assistance or if they have any questions. You return back to the register after a couple of minutes ready to sit down and take a quick break, but you notice a couple drinks sitting on the counter. The volleyball team must have forgotten to take them when they took their food. Since you didn’t have much to do at the moment, you decide to take the drinks to their table yourself.
With arms full of beverages, you walk up to the Adlers. “Hello, sorry to interrupt, but you left your drinks on the counter. I just thought I’d bring them for you.”
Romero takes the drinks from you and then distributes all of them to each person after sporting a grateful smile. “Ah, thank you!”
You’re about to walk away, but the sight before is almost too ridiculous for you to look elsewhere. All of the men are in the process of creating their onigiris, but each creation looks quite...interesting.
Ushijima’s onigiri is one very large globular rice ball, which distinctively resembles a volleyball, with a few sesame seeds sprinkled at the top. Hoshiumi’s onigiri almost looks like it’s about to explode with how much meat was piled inside the rice and probably would’ve fallen apart if he didn’t have it enclosed around both of his hands. Kageyama’s onigiri is of a decent size, but he must’ve put too much pressure when shaping the rice because it just looks like mush with obvious handprints. Romero is the only person at the table who was able to make a normal onigiri, but everyone seems to be enjoying their time so you don’t think Osamu needs to come over and help.
You finally look at the young child sitting next to his father and tilt your head in confusion when you notice that he’s not participating or eating anything his father made for him. With slight concern, you turn towards Romero. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, but is your son not fond of the food? I could offer some other ingredient options?”
“Oh, that’s okay. Everything is perfect!” Romero replies with a knowing look. “Rubens is just a little grumpy since he misses his mother. She met new friends at an onsen and they invited her out to go shopping today. Thank you for asking, though.”
After living in Brazil for a couple months, you were able to pick up on some Portuguese. You’re not in any way fluent yet, so when the older man briefly speaks to his son, you can only make out Romero asking Rubens if he wanted a different onigiri and that he needed to eat to be healthy. The boy’s pout deepens and just simply states that he was bored. Romero sends you an apologetic smile, and you just wave your hand to let him know that you understood.
A sudden idea pops into your head. “Romero-san, is your son allergic to anything? I have an idea to help Rubens enjoy himself more. Would you mind if I try to make your son something?”
“Go for it! My son does not have any allergies, but he does love pork!” Romero nods his head in approval.
You quickly make your way back behind the counter and peek over Osamu’s shoulder as he stands in front of the stove. “Hey boss, do you mind if I try to make something for Romero’s son?”
“Sure. I don’t think anyone needs any help or anything at the moment, so you’re free to do whatever you’d like,” Osamu replies nonchalantly and you tap his arm gratefully.
Situating yourself in front of the counter surrounded by ingredients, you momentarily think about what you want to do. You make the final decision to create two designs for the onigiris that you think Rubens might like. After washing your hands, you gather up all the ingredients you need and even snatch some extra pork from Osamu’s pan. After a couple minutes of putting together the onigiris, you place them on a plate and examine your creations.
The first onigiri resembles a simplified stegosaurus with meat substituting the spines of the dinosaur and some sesame seeds throughout the body for texture. The second onigiri is just a regular rice ball with pork and vegetables, but a couple irregularly shaped pieces of nori are scattered across the surface to resemble a dinosaur egg. Both onigiris lie on top of a small pile of bonito flakes to act as a nest.
You take the plate of food to where Rubens is sitting, a bit nervous since you aren’t sure how he’s going to react. Everyone else at the table just watches curiously as you place the onigiris in front of the young child and his eyes widen. He’s practically mesmerized by his dinosaur themed meal and even some of the other guys are impressed.
Rubens quickly turns towards his father and whispers into his ear. Romero chuckles and pats his son’s head lovingly before facing you. “My son wants to know how you did that. He absolutely loves it.”
A sigh of relief leaves your lips at your successful attempt at making the child happy. The only problem was that you were still in the middle of work, so you didn’t know if you could spend any more time here. Coincidentally, Osamu seemed to have overheard everything for the last couple minutes from his spot in the kitchen. “Hey, (Name)-san. If you wanna take a quick break and spend some time with the kid, I don’t think there would be any problem with it.”
You’re really grateful for Osamu’s leniency, but a part of you still feels bad as you turn to look at him. “Are you sure? I don’t want to skip out on my job so suddenly.”
“Don’t worry about it. The boss said it’s all good.” Osamu gives you a reassuring smile and you take it as your cue to grab an extra chair off to the side and sit beside Rubens. You’re about to grab some rice to begin teaching the boy, but a slight tug on your sleeve makes you freeze in place. As you look to your side, you see Kageyama’s hand near your shoulder and there’s an intense look in his eyes.
“K-Kageyama-san, would you like to learn too?” You ask a bit surprised. Your bewilderment is replaced with amusement when he nods at you furiously and you almost laugh out loud at his excitement.
“Oh! Me too! Me too!” Hoshiumi intervenes enthusiastically and even Ushijima seems to be interested. These guys sure were something else.
In the end, everyone in the group was watching as you demonstrated how to make different designs with the onigiri rice. Rubens finally succumbed to his hunger and began to eat his dinosaur meal, so you were left to attend to the grown up men who listened to you eagerly like school children, aside from Romero who needed to step outside to answer a call from his wife.
“Alright! Now that you have some of the basics down, why don’t you each try to make your own? Just to keep it simple, we’ll all choose a single design. Any ideas as to what you guys want to make?” There’s a brief silence as everyone tries to think of something doable. Suddenly, Ushijima lifts up his phone and an image of what you recognize to be Japan’s adorable volleyball mascot* is shown. You sweatdrop as Hoshiumi and Kageyama clap in agreement at the volleyball player’s obvious, yet adorable selection.
Other than having to give a few pointers to Hoshiumi and Ushijima, it seems like they were doing a pretty decent job at making the character. The one who was truly struggling was Kageyama. He was still putting too much pressure when molding the rice. As he continues to squeeze the rice excessively, you gently place your hands on top of his slender fingers.
“You’re putting too much force in your hands, Kageyama-san. Here, loosen your grip a bit and I can show you.” With that said, Kageyama lets go of his vice grip and allows you to guide his hands over the rice. The two of you stay like that for a couple more seconds until you successfully make a circular rice ball. As the male opens his palms upward with your hands still wrapped around his, his eyes sparkle in amazement.
Kageyama bows his head gratefully and when he looks back up at you, you’re taken aback by the amount of admiration flooding his expression. Your body stiffens when he quickly puts down the onigiri and clasps your hands between his. “Thank you, (Surname)-san!”
“N-No problem.” You feel a bit of heat creep up your cheeks with the way Kageyama was holding your hands so delicately.
The moment doesn’t last long, however, when you suddenly feel someone’s fingers graze the side of your face and a sticky feeling is left on your skin. When you look to see who the culprit is, your eyes fall on the youngest person at the table with one of the most terrified expressions you’ve ever witnessed. Almost immediately, Rubens starts apologizing in broken Japanese similar to the way his father has been speaking, “S-sorry! Sorry! Sorry!”
While you were busy working with Kageyama, Rubens had finished eating and wanted to make his own onigiri since he was still a bit hungry. He wanted to grab more rice from the bowl next to you but misjudged his movements and accidently touched your cheek with his sauce covered fingers. The child felt absolutely horrified and was afraid that you’d hate him for this.
Using a napkin, you wipe off as much as you can from your cheek and then proceed to lower yourself onto the ground to get to the child’s eye level. Mustering up your brightest smile, you try your best to reassure Rubens who looks like he’s about to cry. “Hey, hey! It’s okay, Rubens! I’m not mad.”
You spend the next couple minutes cooing at the sniffling young boy, and once you’re sure that Rubens is no longer going to cry, you sit back down on your chair. You lift up a ball of rice to gesture that you want to help him make an onigiri and he nods his head. You make a traditional triangular onigiri but place two rolled up bonito flakes for eyes and a piece of curved rice on top of the nori to make it look like a bearded face. There’s an almost immediate shift in the child’s mood when you point at the design and then to the empty chair next to him because you had made an onigiri that resembled his father.
Both of your laughs fill the air and the whole situation resembles a heartwarming scene from an anime. You were too distracted to notice the multiple pairs of eyes watching the scene in captivation. Once Rubens starts to eat again, you look up to see some lingering stares. “Is everything alright?”
Two stoic faces avoid your eyes by looking down, while Hoshiumi snaps out of his trance. The white haired male sits up a little straighter before addressing you. “Hey, you’re pretty good with kids, (Surname)-san!”
“I’ve had a couple babysitting jobs in the past. I’m not perfect with kids, but I did pick up a few things here and there,” you respond back shyly.
At this moment, Romero walks back into the shop while pocketing his phone. “Sorry to cut our time short, but I think my wife is coming back home soon. I should start heading out with Rubens. You guys can stay longer if you’d like.”
“That’s okay, Romero-san. I think we’re all ready to leave as well.” Kageyama lifted up his tray which spurred the rest of the other guys to do the same. As everyone helps out in cleaning up their area, you head back to the register to receive the payments for the meal from Romero.
The guys were now all ready to leave, but your boss quickly grabs their attention after taking a glance at a certain framed object on the shop’s wall. “Do you guys mind signing some autographs to put up in the shop?”
“Of course!” Romero exclaims. The rest of the team complies as well and they each sign a piece of paper that will most likely be displayed by tomorrow. Once that’s done, the team stands in front of the exit with their belongings. Rubens tugs at his father’s arms to get his attention and Romero bends down to listen to what the boy wants to say.
“What’s up?....Name?....Onigiri Miya…”
You can’t make out anything other than a few words, so you’re thrown completely off guard when Rubens suddenly jumps up from his spot and waves his arms wildly at you. “Bye-bye, Mrs. Miya!”
You don’t even hear any of the other males voice their goodbyes and leave the shop as blood rushes through your ears and your face flushes into deep crimson color. It seems like Osamu wasn’t spared either as his cheeks explode with heat at the implication. Both of you stand in awkward silence for a few seconds to calm your hearts until Osamu musters up the courage to glance at you first.
His expression shifts a little as he stares at your face. Osamu then points at your cheek. “Oh, (Name)-san. You still got a little something on your face.”
Momentarily forgetting about feeling flustered, you realize that you might not have gotten rid of all the sauce from when Ruben accidentally touched your cheek. “What? I thought I got it all off. Why didn’t anyone say anything?”
You attempt to wipe off the sauce remnants, but fail to do so each time because you don’t know where it is exactly. Osamu grabs a clean towel from the top shelf and slightly dampens it under the sink before standing in front of you again. “I got you.”
Osamu lifts up the towel and starts to wipe at your cheek softly. When your head starts moving too much, he brings up his other hand and places it gently on your neck to support it. There must have been a lot more sauce left than you expected because Osamu continues to hold you in place for a couple more seconds, his eyes never leaving your face. Unconsciously, your own eyes drift around his features and you can’t help but admit how handsome he looked at the moment.
“Oh, young love~”
Both you and Osamu flinch back when you hear one of the customers that are still in the room say their thoughts. When you glance at the table where the voice came from, you see an elderly couple smiling at you while holding hands with one another in a loving manner. The previous blush you had comes back in full force as you remember that the two of you were not alone and in a somewhat intimate position together.
“T-t-thanks, Osamu-san!” You stutter and almost trip over your own feet as you start walking towards the bathroom with hurried steps. “I’m j-just gonna...um...go to the bathroom really quick!”
As you rush away from Osamu, he just watches your back disappear behind the bathroom door. He stands in place quietly as he processes what had just happened and there’s a foreign feeling in his stomach that he can’t explain. He simply turns his back to the bathroom and rubs a hand to his cheek to hide the smile that threatens to creep onto his lips.

Leftovers
You’re currently laying on your couch comfortably surrounded by pillows and blankets while watching a movie on your laptop. Today was your day off from work, so you planned to stay in for the whole day and catch up on some alone time. As much as you want to focus on your movie, your mind starts to wander off.
About two days have passed since you met the Schweiden Adlers volleyball team at Onigiri Miya, but they were still on your mind. Based on the tidbits of information you’ve gathered from Osamu, Adlers and MSBY were rival teams. It almost makes you want to laugh at how different the two teams were in terms of their dynamics and personalities, so you hope to see them play against each other one day.
Suddenly, the ringing of your doorbell interrupts your thoughts and you pause your movie. You stand up and walk towards your door in confusion. You weren’t expecting anyone to visit, so you’re a bit weary as you look through the peephole.
As if the universe knew what you were thinking about before, you’re surprised to see Sakusa standing outside your door with his usual face mask. Swiftly unlocking the door, you pull it open and greet your curly haired acquaintance.
“Hey, Sakusa-san! What’s-” You stop speaking abruptly when you notice two large bags in the volleyball players arms and they look fairly heavy too. “Oh, wow. Are those...for me?”
Sakusa just nods his head and you quickly open your door wider to let him inside to place the bags down. You’re extremely curious as to what the contents were since both bags were covered by tissue paper, even more so because Sakusa was the one to bring them to you. He places both bags onto your coffee table and you’re about to ask what they were for, but he beats you to it.
“Congrats,” Sakusa states with his usual impassive expression but there’s a hint of softness to his tone.
At this time, you’re completely perplexed. “Congrats for what?”
“For graduating.” Sakusa’s reply causes your eyebrows to shoot up. “This is from the team.”
“Oh...” You’re left speechless for a moment as you try to understand the situation and once everything finally clicks, a warm feeling encompasses your heart. “Um...thank you.”
You gaze at the gifts bags for a bit longer with various emotions swirling through your eyes before talking again. “...did the team send you because we live in the same apartment building?”
“Yeah.” Sakusa let out a sigh which made you laugh a bit, but it didn’t sound like he was necessarily bothered by the task.
The male briefly checks his phone and gestures that he needs to leave soon. As Sakusa starts to make his way back to the front door, you follow with light steps to see him out. “Let everyone know that I really appreciate this when you see them again for practice!”
He nods in acknowledgement and the two of you exchange goodbyes before you finally lock the door as he walks away. Without a moment to lose, you rush over to the large bags sitting on your coffee table with anticipation. Just from the first glance, you can tell that there are multiple things piled up, so you’ll just have to take things out one by one.
After removing the tissue paper from the bag on the left first, you pull out something large and fluffy. In your hands is a huge teddy bear that’s wearing an MSBY jersey while holding a small note card that says “Congratulations on Graduation!”. You immediately know who it’s from because the bear’s multicolored fur resembles the colors of Bokuto’s hair. You give the bear a tight hug before placing it next to you on the couch.
The next thing you take out is a miniature set of hand lotions with a small bottle of pepper spray taped onto it. There’s a small note on the bottle that says “It’s dangerous walking home alone at night”. There’s no indication of who the gift giver is, but you know that Sakusa would be the only one to pick out these specific gifts. As you move the package to the side, another small piece of paper falls to the ground. It must have been stuck to the bottom of the hand lotion set. When you pick it up, there’s another note that says “Thanks for the soup”. Your smile widens. It seems like you had guessed correctly.
The last gift from the first bag is a beautiful mug with a sunrise design printed onto it. There’s a Brazilian flag sticking out of the mug, which makes it even more obvious that the gift was from your dear friend Hinata. When you push aside the flag, there’s a limited edition Bouncing Ball keychain inside the mug as well with a cute handwritten card that says “Congratulations, (Name)-san! We should hang out one day to play some beach volleyball like we did in Brazil!”. Your cheeks were starting to ache at how much you were smiling as you reread the note several more times.
You reach out to the remaining bag and pull away the tissue paper. Your nose is immediately assaulted by a pleasing floral fragrance and when you look inside, a large bouquet of flowers comes into your vision. Once the flowers are in your arms, you notice the note sticking out between the petals. Placing the flowers on your lap, you open the small folded piece of paper which says “Hey there, sweetheart. You should’ve let me know you were having such a big moment in your life! I would’ve done so much more, but for now, enjoy these flowers. The irises mean accomplishment and admiration. The peonies mean good luck. The daffodils mean new beginnings. Congrats on your win against school!” You’re quite touched by the amount of thought that went into this gift and based on the nickname, you can safely assume that this is Atsumu’s gift. You didn’t take him as a flower type of guy, but he’s always full of surprises. Nonetheless, you mentally note that you need to buy a nice vase to place these wonderful beauties in.
You thought that would be the last gift since you’ve already opened everything from the four MSBY players, but when you glance into the bag one more time, there are still two remaining boxes. They have the same wrapping, so you assume that they are from the same person. Taking both of them out carefully, you notice that the larger of the two boxes has a note that reads “I know you said you don’t normally eat sweets, so I tried my best not to add too much sugar”. Wondering what the card meant about sweets, you slowly open the lid and see two small cakes positioned next to each other with icing that spells out ‘Tiramisu’ and ‘Dark Chocolate’ on the respective cakes. Your mouth waters at the sight of the homemade desserts, but you restrain yourself because you were even more curious as to what might be in the other mystery box.
When you finally open the last remaining gift, there’s another note inside that says “It’s never too late to celebrate. Congrats, (Name)-san”. When you look underneath the note, your jaw drops as you let out a gasp. Inside was a gorgeous silver charm bracelet that was minimalistic enough for you to wear wherever you went. If the note wasn’t a big giveaway, the tiny onigiri charm attached to the bracelet convinced you that Osamu was the one who had given you these gifts.
The next couple of hours are spent finishing your movie with all of your gifts surrounding you. The inside of your room now smells like a mix of flowers and peachy lotion. The MSBY teddy bear is secured between your arms as you drink warm tea from your new mug while taking a bite out of each cake.
You’re not sure whether or not you want to jump up in happiness or simply cry from the overwhelming emotions, but either way, you’re glad to have met such amazing people the past couple months.
You couldn’t wait to get back to work.

Japan’s volleyball mascot: y’all know that volleyball mascot right? The one Ushijima loves to draw and the one that Hinata has shirt of

Previous///Next

You’re greeting yet another hungry customer during work, but your surroundings are a bit different from usual. Today, you stand behind the Onigiri Miya food stall at Kamei Arena Sendai. Osamu had planned to set up a stall for the V. League Championships event to promote his restaurant. Even though he won’t admit it, he is also here to support Atsumu.
The different setting isn’t the only thing that was new, however. Today, you had an extra worker helping out with the stall.
“Dai-kun, can you refill the Grilled Mentaiko and Salmon onigiris on the shelf?” You ask a male standing behind you while passing an order to the awaiting hands of a father and his child.
He jokingly salutes at you. “Aye aye, captain!”
Kimura Daisuke is a cousin of yours that is a year younger than you and has recently moved into town to transfer into the local university. He currently has an online tutoring job but has shown interest in working at Onigiri Miya around the time you’ll be leaving. Having your cousin assisting today is sort of like a trial run for your boss to assess. It’s also nice to have an extra pair of hands since the day was surely going to be very busy.
Osamu suddenly bumps your shoulder. “Have I already been replaced as the boss? Kimura-san seems to listen to you more than his potential employer.”
“I don’t know. Maybe you’re just slacking?” A small giggle leaves your mouth and he returns your smile.
It’s been a couple of weeks since that day. After Osamu had walked you home in the rain, he didn’t treat you any differently during work despite the slightly intimate moment you two had shared the night before. You couldn’t bring yourself to mention anything, so you decided to just act like nothing happened. It was honestly a bit of a relief since you don’t think you really have the mental capacity to deal with your feelings while trying to prepare for your new life in graduate school.
Your thoughts are cut short when you hear Osamu let out a noise of recognition. “Oh hey! It’s you, uh...from Karasuno! You were the one with that really nasty jump floater!”
A tall male with freckles scattered across his face responds to Osamu’s exclamation. “Ah. It’s Yamaguchi.”
Your boss snaps his fingers as he remembers something. “Oh yeeeah. This is Sendai. Duh. It’s your home turf.”
“Yeah. But, even if it wasn't being held here in Sendai, there’s no way I’d miss this game.” There’s a certain glint in Yamaguchi’s eyes.
Osamu grins knowingly. “I bet you wouldn’t.”
As the two look up at the Adlers vs. MSBY banner behind the food stalls, you decide to voice the question that had popped up in your mind when Osamu first greeted Yamaguchi. “Hey, you said you went to Karasuno, right? Does that mean you were teammates with Sho-kun? Or, uh, Hinata-kun?”
Yamaguchi is a little flustered when he realizes that you’ve been listening to the whole conversation but nods his head. “We were on the same volleyball team all three years of high school. Are you a friend of his?”
“Yup! I actually met him in Brazil and we’ve been good friends ever since. He’s told me a lot about his former teammates, but I’m just bad with names.”
He points to you in realization. “Oh! So, you’re the friend from Brazil! Hinata’s mentioned you a couple times when we talked over the phone.”
You chatted with Yamaguchi a bit more and even got to meet another girl named Yachi who had also been involved with Karasuno’s volleyball club. Eventually, they both had to leave since the game was starting soon and needed to meet up with a friend.
Once the Adlers vs. MSBY game commenced, there weren’t that many customers, so you were able to watch the majority of the game undisturbed. You were, however, surprised to see Akaashi when he came up to the stall to buy some onigiris. You haven’t seen him since your first day of work, so it was a bit comical to witness him slightly deflating when you mention that you haven’t told anyone about the tax incident.
For the rest of the game, the only sounds you make are ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ as you try your best to follow the fast pace (Although, you did meet a nice guy named Koganegawa who practically jumped like a child when you handed him his food). Even with all of the things you already know about the sport, this volleyball game was just too intense for you to digest everything. Before you knew it, the match was officially over with MSBY scoring the win. You felt proud of Hinata and was thoroughly impressed by all the other athletes you’ve come to know at work.
Osamu and Kimura both cheered in joy at the fantastic game as well. Even though you technically didn’t win anything, you still wanted to take advantage of the positive atmosphere, “Do you guys want to take a picture as a memory for this day?”
Your boss smiles. “Sure. I can take it with my phone. Get in!”
The three of you stand close to each other to get into the frame, with you being the middle. Osamu takes the picture and pulls it up to show you and your cousin how it turned out. Just as Osamu is about to take another photo, Kimura steps aside and you both look at him curiously.
“You guys should take a picture with just the two of you!” Kimura suggests.
You tilt your head in confusion. “What about you?”
“I just think you guys should take a picture together since you’re technically the ‘real’ workers...and some other things.” Your cousin mumbled the last part of his sentence, but you couldn’t ask him what he meant since he had already turned around to speak with someone at a nearby stall.
Both you and Osamu just shrug your shoulders at Kimura's explanation. Osamu puts his phone in a selfie position again and gestures for you to get closer. You comply and muster up the happiest smile you could make. The man beside you also produces a bright grin and snaps the picture. Afterwards, Osamu sends you both pictures and your expression softens.
Now that the game has concluded, there’s an influx of hungry customers that leave your stall busy for about an hour or so. Osamu has allowed Kimura to man the second register and your cousin has been doing fairly well for his first time on the job. After helping an elderly man with his order, the lunch rush seems to have finally died down.
You take off your apron and put it off to the side. “Osamu-san, Dai-kun. I’m gonna go to the bathroom. Will you guys be okay on your own for a bit?”
Kimura nods his head fervently.
Osamu waves his hand at you. “We’ll live.”
You snicker at his response and make your way into the closest restroom, which was actually a lot further than you expected. After taking care of your business, you walk out of the bathroom and see two male strangers loitering in the hallway, both adorning tracksuits of a team you can’t recognize. You attempt to walk past them unnoticeably but fail to do so when they stop conversing and stare at you with lingering eyes.
“Oh, hey there. You’re pretty cute.”
“Yeah. You got a boyfriend?”
The two men slowly walk over to where you’re standing and corner you against the wall from either side. You did not want to deal with this right now. “Doesn’t matter to you. Move out of the way.”
One of them scoffs and a drop of spit lands on your cheek. “What’s the big deal? We just complimented you. Can’t you see that we’re being nice?”
You wipe your face in disgust. “I’m trying to get back to work. Now, if you’ll excuse me.”
As you try to push past them, you feel a rough hand grip around your wrist tightly. Another arm threateningly wraps around your waist and your steps are halted. You struggle a bit to escape, but their holds are too constricting. In the back of your mind, you wish Osamu was there.
You grit your teeth. “Let me go.”
The one with the grip on your wrist uses his other hand to grasp your chin and you glare at his face. “Listen, we’re volleyball players. Isn’t it like every girl’s dream to hang out with cool athletes like us? Clearly, being nice isn’t enough, so we’ll just have to use force.”
Having had enough, your instincts tell you to raise your leg and get ready to kick one of them. Just as you’re about to wreak havoc, a new hand grabs onto the wrist of the man in front of you. The vice grip on the man’s wrist causes his hold on you to loosen. The arm on your waist also disappears and you don’t hesitate to pull away.
In your haste, you almost lose your footing but someone catches you and pushes you behind them. Your face is assaulted by a comforting citrus scent and you immediately know who you bumped into. Sure enough, when you look up, a freshly showered Hinata is standing in front of you. He’s staring at the men who were harassing you and you’ve never seen him carry such an angry expression.
When you finally take in your surroundings, another familiar figure comes into view, his blonde hair still wet from washing up after his recent game. The mysterious hand belonged to none other than Miya Atsumu. “Looks like we’ve got some pieces of shit that leaked out of the bathroom.”
Surprisingly, Ushijima was the one who had pulled the other guy away from your waist. “Indeed.”
Both of them glare at the harassers coldly. Starting to feel a bit threatened, the strangers step aside and begin walking down the hall while looking behind them. “Ugh, these guys are just from those big shot teams. We better run before we get banned from playing.”
The men started to pick up their pace but suddenly ran into another tall figure. When they look up, Kageyama is intensely staring them down in silence. The strangers’ faces pale at the sight of the Adler’s setter.
“Dude, that's Kageyama! I think we made him angry!”
“Fuck! S-sorry!”
The two practically sprinted away leaving behind a rather confused Kageyama. He has absolutely no idea why they ran away from him. Despite what had just conspired, you internally laugh at how unaware the male was.
“Are you okay, (Name)-san?” Hinata turns around and faces you. Any traces of anger had completely dissipated from his face. “They didn’t hurt you or anything?”
“I’m okay. I appreciate it, Sho-kun.” You give him a reassuring smile.
“Man, those guys are scum,” Atsumu says with clear irritation in his voice. Even through his irritation, you can still recognize the concern in his own eyes as he focuses his attention on you. “Lucky you had your knights in shining armor?”
“I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself, Atsumu-san.” You raise your eyebrow at his words but wonder if this was his way of comforting you.
The blonde raises his hands in front of him in a defensive stance. “Oh, I know. I’m sure you can deliver a nice blow to the next guy that dares lay a hand on you, sweetheart.”
Ushijima speaks up from his usual quietness to give his own input to the conversation as he remembers a certain incident the first time he visited Onigiri Miya. “She has actually already done so to one of my former teammates.”
Atsumu smirks. “Well, damn.”
You get flustered for being exposed by the stoic spiker. “It was an accident!”
Before you could suffer any longer, the moment is interrupted by loud voices echoing the halls.
“Oh, wow! Are we finally gathering for that arm wrestling competition?” Spiky grey and black hair animatedly sway from side to side as Bokuto sees all of you together.
Behind him, Hoshiumi runs up to the group enthusiastically and starts to jump in place. “Oh, boy! Count me in!”
Kageyama blankly stares at his bird-like teammate. “Ah, Hoshiumi-san.”
With the addition of two more rowdy people into the group, Atsumu looks like he’s about to have a heart attack with the way he clutches his chest. “No, no! We’re doing this again?! What is this ‘let’s overwhelm the reader part 2’?!”
You have absolutely no idea what he was talking about and just shake your head in indifference. It was probably best to just leave him alone in his own strange distress.
Your movement catches Hoshiumi’s attention and the male waves his arm in greeting. “Oh, hey (Surname)-san! Did you watch our game? Did you see my skills?”
You giggle at his excitement. “I did. I was impressed by your jumping ability. You all played really well. ”
Bokuto perks up at your comment. “You have a pretty nice view from Myaa-sam’s stall, so you’ve seen all of my spikes too, right?!”
“Of course, Bokuto-san.” You briefly check your phone and realize that you’ve spent far too long going to the bathroom. “Speaking of ‘Myaa-sam’, I should probably head back to work.”
You quickly waved to all of the volleyball players and they each gave you their own warm goodbyes before walking back to their own locker rooms. However, one person stayed behind.
“I’ll walk you back, (Name)-san!” Hinata offers.
“You don’t have to. It’s not that far of a walk.” You put your hands in front of you.
He shakes his head and sends you a friendly grin, but a hint of concern is laced into his eyes. “Just in case.”
Understanding his worry, you nod and let him stay beside you as you start walking down the hallway. Right as you turn the corner, a figure wearing a face mask leaning against the wall startles you.
Hinata is momentarily shocked as well but relaxes when he realizes that it’s just another one of his teammates. “Omi-san? What are you doing here?”
Sakusa doesn’t answer Hinata and moves away from the wall to make his way towards you with his hands in his pockets. As soon as he’s in front of you, a single word leaves his mouth, “Hand.”
You’re confused but slowly lift up one of your hands anyways.
“No, the other one.” Sakusa looks at your other arm.
You comply and lift up your other hand instead and without warning, the masked man takes his hands out of his pockets and squeezes a generous amount of hand sanitizer on the wrist that was manhandled a couple minutes ago.
You stiffen at the sensation and just watch in bewilderment as Sakusa leaves without uttering another word. “What...just happened?”
Hinata softly smiles at the interaction. “That’s just how Omi-san shows he cares.”
“Me? Why would he care about me?” You ask.
“Hm...that’s something even I’m not too sure about. Omi-san can be pretty hard to read.” He places a finger on his chin in contemplation. You hum in understanding and spread the hand sanitizer around your wrist thoroughly.
Both of you continue walking back to the food stalls when Hinata comes up with an idea. “Since you’re here already, do you want to meet my former teammates from high school? They’re all staying for the whole duration of today’s games, so you can meet them after you finish work!”
“Are you sure?” There’s a small part of you that wants to meet the people who helped shape Hinata’s bright personality. “I wouldn’t want to impose on your reunion.”
“It’s no problem at all! We already kind of met up after the game, and I would love everyone to meet you since we’re also close friends! Kageyama will be there too, so you’ll know at least one other person.”
You give it another moment of thought before answering, “Alright. I’d love to meet them.”
You finally make it back to the Onigiri Miya stall after what felt like hours even though you’ve only been gone for a little while. Osamu nods his head at you first and Kimura vocally welcomes you back.
“Ah, I was wondering what was holding you up.” Your boss turns his attention to Hinata and gives him a pat on the shoulder. “Hey, man. Good game out there.”
“Thanks, Miya-san!” Your orange haired friend gives you a quick hug. “I’ll see you later, (Name)-san!”
“See ya, Sho-kun! I’ll text you when I’m free.”
Once Hinata leaves, it’s just the three of you behind the stall once again. Osamu claps his hand loudly and glances at his two co-workers. “Ready for round 2 of the pre-game lunch rush?”
“Yes, sir!” Both of your voices respond back in unison and you all get to work.

All three of you let out a final huff as you finish packing up all of the supplies and equipment used for the stall. You’ve been working nonstop for a couple hours now, but the day is finally over and everything has been cleaned up.
“You said you were meeting up with those Karasuno folks, right?” Osamu questions. “You can head over to meet them now.”
“But, what about all of this stuff?” You point at all of the boxes and tables you’d just organized.
“Kimura-san and I can take care of it. I rented out a van to move everything, so we’ll just borrow two carts to avoid any second trips,” your boss explains. He walks behind you and gently places his hands on your shoulders. “Don’t worry about us and go do your thing.”
Without much room to argue, you’re pushed away from the stalls. “Okay, okay. I’m going. I’ll see you tomorrow, Osamu-san. See you around, Dai-kun!”
Both men respond back with a shout of their own and part ways. You quickly shoot a text to Hinata telling him that you’re done. Your friend messages back immediately and lets you know where everyone was meeting up.
It wasn’t too difficult to find the Karasuno alumni since their group stood out quite a bit from others. You were able to spot Hinata first because of his apparent orange hair and even Kageyama’s furrowed eyebrows have become common enough for you to recognize. You walk over to where they are and try to position yourself in your friend’s line of vision.
“(Name)-san, you’re here!” Hinata makes eye contact with you and cuts off the conversation he’s having with a tall blonde to greet you. “Our old coach left with our kouhais since it was getting late, but most of my former teammates are here.”
Now, you’ve caught everyone’s attention and feel a bit flustered. “Um...hello. I’m Sho-kun’s friend, (Surname) (Name).”
There’s a brief pause and you wonder if you’ve already done something wrong. Suddenly, a chorus of ‘hellos’ and ‘nice to meet yous’ fill your ears and you’re slightly overwhelmed by the enthusiastic greetings.
A broad shouldered man approached you first with two other people following closely behind. He holds out his hand and you place your own in his for a handshake. The handshake is firm yet comforting. “It’s finally nice to meet you, (Surname)-san! I’m Sawamura Daichi, former captain of the Karasuno Boys’ Volleyball club.”
The grey haired man with a mole under his eye introduced himself next, “Sugawara Koshi! Hinata’s told us a bit about you, so it’s nice to finally be able to put a face to the stories. This guy next to me is Azumane Asahi; he’s a bit of a shy one.”
“S-Suga! I’m not like how I was in high school anymore. Stop teasing me!” Asahi whined to his friend before turning to you once again. “I’m Azumane Asahi.”
The rest of the group took turns introducing themselves and you were delighted to see Yamaguchi for the second time today (Although, you’re not sure why Kageyama introduced himself again since you’ve already met before). You felt more comfortable knowing that you weren’t the only girl in the group, but you’d be lying if you said that Kiyoko didn’t seem a bit intimidating with her beauty. Even Yachi’s cuteness almost blinded you.
You were in the middle of telling Yachi and an uncaring Tsukishima how you’d met Hinata in a foreign country when the man named Tanaka let out a shout to get everyone’s attention, “Guys! Noya-san wants to video chat!”
Most of the guys crowded around Tanaka’s phone and eagerly waited for ‘Noya-san’ to appear on the screen. It wasn’t long before a man with spiky dark hair and a tuft of blonde popped up a little too close to the camera. “Ryu! Everyone! What’cha guys been up to?! I caught a Marlin this morning!”
“Nishinoya! We’re doing great! We’re just meeting up for a bit before we have to leave. Hinata brought his friend too!” Daichi responds.
At the mention of a new friend, Nishinoya’s eyes light up. “Oh! Who are they? Can I meet them?”
Tanaka shifts his phone so that you’re the only one visible on camera. Feeling a bit awkward, you just give a slight wave. “Uh...hello, I’m (Surname) (Name).”
For a minute or two, the male just stares at you with wide eyes. You have no idea what to do, so you just stand still and hope for someone to intervene. Nishinoya is the first to speak and his tone turns serious, “Ryu, take me to Shoyo.”
Tanaka turns the phone to Hinata who is just as confused about the sudden change in demeanor. Once the focus is on the MSBY spiker, Nishinoya holds out his arm in front of him as if he were virtually holding the younger man’s shoulder. “You’ve done well, my young disciple.”
Hinata blinks. “Huh?”
The audio almost cuts off as Nishinoya yells his next few words, “SHE’S GORGEOUS!”
Your cheeks turn bright pink at his exclamation as the rest of the guys laugh at their friend’s antics. You weren't sure whether to feel embarrassed or flattered by the compliment.
Luckily, the excessive attention on you is short-lived as Nishinoya switches to another topic. “Should I send you guys some souvenirs? I saw this strange mask that kind of looked like Ryu from high school, and I think you guys would really like it!”
Tanaka looks amused and begins to smirk when a sudden idea pops into his head. “Noya-san, you should definitely get Daichi-san one of those!”
Daichi begins to panic. “What do you mean, Tanaka? What are those?”
“Ah, yes!” Sugawara mischievously grins. “I think he’ll like one of those!”
At this point, Asahi is nervously sweating.
Hinata looks up at Kageyama, perplexed. “Kageyama, do you know what they’re talking about?”
“No, dumbass.”
“What?! Why’d you have to add ‘dumbass’?!”
“‘Cause that’s what you are.”
A new voice pitches in. “Oh? Is the tyrant back for his new reign?”
“Tsukki!”
You’re standing off to the side with Kiyoko and Yachi, sweatdropping at the chaos enfolding in front of you. “Were...were they always like this?”
“Yeah...they haven’t really changed, huh.” Yachi lets out a lighthearted sigh. Kiyoko laughs softly.
It takes a couple minutes before everyone calms down, and Tanaka eventually ends the call with Nishinoya. It doesn’t even take a second before Sugawara makes a suggestion. “Hey, guys! We don’t know when we can all meet like this again, so let’s take a group picture!”
Tanaka jumps in agreement. “That sounds like a great idea!”
“I can take the picture,” you offer and Sugawara passes you his phone gratefully.
Hinata steps to the spot next to you. “Are you sure you don’t want to be in the picture too?”
There’s no way you’d feel comfortable butting into their picture, so you shake your head. “No, it’s fine. This is your reunion. I promise I’ll take some nice pictures.”
Everyone gets into position and you take multiple photos while making sure to capture all of their comical poses. Once everyone is satisfied, the group relaxes.
Daichi checks his watch and musters a tired sigh. “Alright. I should probably head back to work. I’m up for a night shift today.”
“I have to go too. I have a couple exams that still need to be graded by tomorrow.” Sugawara stretches his arms upwards. “We should definitely eat together next time!”
Everyone seems to agree to call it a day which is your cue to leave as well. “It was nice meeting you all.”
Asahi smiles at you. “Same here! If anything, we’re glad Hinata was able to find a good friend while he was in Brazil. We were all pretty worried about how he would fare in a new country.”
Hinata rubs the back of his head bashfully and you share a knowing look with him. “He helped me out just as much, so I’m glad too.”

After parting with the Karasuno alumni, you stopped by the bathroom before heading out. It seems like the universe has decided that you haven’t had enough chaos today when a shadow looms over you and a chill washes over your body.
You quickly turn around ready to chuck your bag at the mysterious entity but stop yourself when you make eye contact with yet another familiar individual. He’s once again in a professional black suit alongside his usual bedhead. “What the f-! Kuroo-san?”
Said male smirks. “In the flesh. How have you been, register girl?”
“What are you doing here?” Your body relaxes, but your mind is still sharp since you never know what the man is plotting.
“I work for the Japan Volleyball Association. I think it would be natural for me to be at a volleyball game, “ Kuroo explains nonchalantly.
“Could you not sneak around like some horror movie creature?”
“Oho! Already so sassy and we’ve only met once before!”
“You just give off a sassable vibe.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“Whatever you want it to be.”
“Are you dating him yet?”
Kuroo’s sudden change in topic catches you completely off guard and almost stumble in place even though you’re not even walking. “...who?”
He lets out a pitiful sigh at your uncertain answer. “Poor guy…”
You’re confused as to why Kuroo’s acting like this, so you just stare at him blankly. He doesn’t seem to want to answer your unasked question and instead brings up another subject. “Well, if you’re still single, you wouldn’t happen to be interested in a guy that streams online and is also a CEO of a company?”
“If you’re trying to set me up with who I think you’re trying to set me up with, then it’s gonna have to be a no,” you quickly reply. Kuroo looks a little disappointed and you feel a bit bad for shutting him down so harshly. “Not that Kod- Kozume-san is a bad guy or anything. I just...don’t think getting in a relationship right now would be a good idea. I’m gonna be super busy and I won’t be here for much longer anyways.”
The lanky man’s expression shifts to one of curiosity. “You going somewhere?”
You suppose you should get used to explaining yourself since you’ve only told a handful of people about your future plans. “I’m going to a graduate school a couple hours away, so I’ll be out of this area in a few months.”
“What are you studying?’
“Sports medicine.”
Kuroo lets out a low whistle. “Never took you as the type to study something sports related, but that’s pretty cool.”
He reaches into the pocket of his blazer and takes out a business card. He offers it to you with a smirk on his face. “Here’s my business card. My number’s on it.”
You raise your eyebrows at his gesture and cautiously take the card. “I still have your number from when you sent me pictures, remember?”
His eyes lighten up at your revelation. “I’m flattered that you never deleted it. Pass this to a friend of yours if you’d like then.”
“Is there a reason you wanted to give me your business card?” You place the card in your bag for safe keeping.
Kuroo’s face softens. “Give me a call after you graduate. I can hook you up with a few connections for a job.”
Your eyes widen at the unexpected kindness. You’ve only met the guy twice, but he’s already offering to do something so helpful. If you didn’t already know the people he surrounded himself with, you would have definitely been more suspicious of him. “That’s...really nice of you. Thanks, Kuroo-san.”
“Anything for my best friend’s number one fan.” He points to the Bouncing Ball keychain dangling from your bag and you feel a bit shy. The man then places a hand to his chest and lifts his other arm to the side. “Plus, I’m always this kind.”
“Oh, I’m sure.”
The two of you exchange amused expressions before you finally head out of the building. The night air is refreshing after spending an entire day inside of a crowded gymnasium. Despite the variety of personalities that you’ve met in a span of less than an hour, you’re walking off feeling strangely at ease.

A/N: cockblock atsumu strikes again but for the good of the universe this time :D
In case you’re wondering why i added Kimura (cousin) suddenly, i just made him the little dude working with osamu at the stall in the manga hehe

EDIT: HIIII SO UH THERES A “pilot ~revised~” ON MY PAGE SO I RECCOMENTD READING THAT ONE CUZ IT HAS MORE CONTENT 👍🏽
Here’s the link:
description: In which Y/n is a new addition to Karasuno’s Girl’s Volleyball Club
THIS IS REALLY JUST LIKE...A TEST RUN..FOR THIS STORY CUZ I DONT THINK IM THAT GREAT AT WRITING and i feel like people wont really like it. so....yeah.
a/n: ok so, I’ve been thinking of this concept so much lately. It started off as just as a nice story to play in my head, but I really wanted to see if I could write it down. So, I felt like I haven’t really seen a lot of imagines or content on the girl’s volleyball club and I felt like it would be cool to explore that side. First things first, I am raised in California. Thus, I am quite incompetent in knowledge about Japan schooling. All my knowledge is really from me googling stuff and ofc, watching haikyuu. With that said, if I made a mistake on the take of Japan schooling, I do not mean to cause any offense. This is solely for entertainment purposes. With that said, I do not own the characters of haikyuu. However, there are some characters I made up with my own imagination. In addition, this is an “x reader” sort of story but I will be defining some of her characteristics so I am sorry if it hinders you from imagining its you. Finally, I am not that good at writing stories lol but im trying. I hope you enjoy.
I hate introductions. Y/n thought to herself as she sat back down in her seat after standing in front of the class, stating her name and her previous school. Her gaze shifted towards the window. The sun was out and shining and she had the perfect view of the gymnasium. Oh how she just wanted to get up from her uncomfy chair and leave the boring lecture and head towards the gym.
It was the first day of school for Y/n at Karasuno High. It’s not like she started in the middle of the semester, no, she was just about a month late into the school year. With her work ethic, she didn’t feel any pressure in order to catch up with everyone else. She knew she would get it done.
It’s not really her fault she came a bit late into the school year either. Her dad’s job required a small move, not that she was complaining. She didn’t really feel tied down at her old high school because: she wasn’t there for that long and she didn’t really make any friends, despite joining a sport.
It’s not that she didn’t want to make friends. It seems that her track record, or the lack thereof, from junior high with meeting new people has left an imprint on her.
Y/n looks down at the worksheet that was passed out in the beginning of class. The assignment was already completed due to Y/n’s eagerness to finish any homework that would take away time from her main passion.
Some people would say she was obsessed. Some would say dedicated. She simply sees volleyball as an opportunity. The class bell rings, signaling for lunch. Before she realizes it, she is walking towards the gym, in which she would meet the girl’s volleyball captain. As she is switching shoes, she can hear screaming from inside.
“-What did I tell you about touching my onigiri! You are going to pay for that!” “I really didn’t mean it this time, I promise! I didn’t know it was yours!” The voices were muffled, yet she was still able to hear the sincerity in both of the voices. Y/n was about to open the gymnasium’s door when the door swung open by a tall pink-haired girl. She was being chased by another tall girl with long blonde hair, but she was a bit shorter than the pink one. Before Y/n could process stepping aside because it seemed the pink-haired girl had no inclination in stopping, she was tumbled to the ground by the girl who she can only guess took an onigiri without permission. As well, the blonde clumsily tripped and fell on top of the two.
“You idiots! Will you stop it! We already told you, we got a guest coming today and we want to make a good first impression!” A stern voice called out inside the gym.
“Um, Moa-san, I think our wishes are already soiled.” Another voice chimed in from the gym.
“Wha- You dumbasses! Hey, are you okay?” A girl with dirty blonde hair came out from the entrance and offered a hand towards Y/n as the two perpetrators started to get up with apologies towards Y/n.
“Yeah, I am good.” Despite just being tackled to the ground, Y/n remains as neutral as ever.
“Aren’t you going to ask if we are okay?” The energetic, pink haired spoke.
“As if I care when you collide into our guest! You really need to be more cautious, Etsuko!” She barked. “I am Aihara Moa. Pleasure to meet you. You’re the first year that turned that application past the deadline, right?” she states more calmly than her previous statement.
“Pleasure is all mine. And, yes. Sorry for the inconvenience.” Y/n states with quite the unfazed face.
Does this kid crack a smile once in a while? Moa asked in her mind. She seems quite different than the other first years we have. Her thoughts continue.
“I am Oba Yuma and this is Morita Etsuko.” Yuma, who had the pretty, long blonde hair, spoke with a warm smile.
“Why did you introduce me?! I wanted to have a cool introduction!” Etsuko huffed with a small pout.
“Well, it’s not like you can recover your so-called ‘cool introduction’ from that full-body collision.” Yuma smoothly replied. Etsuko’s eyes widened and cheeks heated up as she couldn’t come up with a sly comeback to her logic.
“You guys are just lucky that Rinko isn’t here to scold you.” Moa warned the 2 first years. With the mention of the scary third year that wasn’t even the captain, yet she reigned supreme in the disciplinary department, they shivered at the thought of the punishment.
As Y/n stepped further into the big, bright court, she spotted that she could only assume was the captain as she looked so appalled at what happened.
“Hello, you must be Michimiya Yui.” Y/n knew she had to say something to pull the worried captain from her thoughts.
“Hi! Yes, that’s me! I am so sorry for those two. I would say they aren’t always like that, but I don’t want to lie to a potential teammate.” Yui spoke with an uneasy smile.
Yuma and Etsuko’s interests peaked when they heard “a potential teammate” come out of their captains' mouths. They were the only first years on the team, so the thought of another person in the same boat as them made them excited and wanted to join the conversation. The two first years gave each other a look and started to walk towards Yui and hopefully their new friend. However, before they could even be in ear-shot, the pair got pulled away by Sasaki Chizuru, another third year.
“Oh, no. Don’t think you will be bombarding her with questions right off the bat.” She bluntly states.
“Oh, c’mon Sasaki, aren’t you curious about her? Like how did she get into volleyball? Or even, is she a beginner? Or maybe she is an absolute monster who dominates the court!” Etsuko proclaimed as her mind went too fast for her mouth to follow.
“As of right now, it’s not our business. All we can do, and are allowed to do”, emphasizing the word ‘allowed’, “is to watch from the sidelines and quietly eat our lunches.” Chizuru instructed the first years and pointed at the far corner of the gym.
Despite her own words, Chizuru couldn’t help but glance at Y/n and wonder the same things that the first year questioned. At face value, Y/n was quite the enigma. The 2 first years gave a pout, but headed towards their desired location.
“So, you came from Niiyama Girls' High? That’s a really good school for volleyball. What made you come to Karasuno?” Yui asked.
“It was the most ideal school in terms of my dad’s work location.” Y/n states plainly. She didn’t technically lie. Well, it was an ideal school in terms to the proximity to her new apartment, but that was not the only reason. She saw videos of their interhigh-prelims last year and to be quite frank, Y/n was not entirely impressed with the state of their team. However, she knew that this meant there was room to grow for them. She knew very well that she could have gone to Shiratorizawa and joined their girls’ volleyball club. Objectively, with her skill set, Shiratorizawa made sense. Nonetheless, Y/n didn’t know what compelled her to pick this one. She convinced herself it was because she is a sucker for rooting the underdog.
Does this kid show any emotion? Yui thought in her mind. It’s like nothing affects her. Her thoughts continued.
“How long have you been playing volleyball?” Yui curiously asked.
“Since the 2nd grade.” Y/n quickly states. As much as she wasn’t showing it, she was just itching to show what she can do. The court was right there in front of her, after all.
“That’s impressive, alright, well if you’re comfortable with it, I’d love to see some serves and sets from you. After school, we can hold a three on three since we all aren’t really in the right clothes to play.”
“Sounds good.” To say Y/n was excited would be an understatement. As she removed her cream sweater, she could feel a set of eyes burning a hole on her back. She turned around to put her sweater down and realized that she was wrong. It wasn’t one pair of eyes, it was all of them, curious to see how good she really is. She could feel her heart pounding at the thought of holding everyone’s attention. She knew if she let her mind continue, the nerves would get to her and hinder her performance. She took deep breaths and started to quietly humm a song that was previously playing on her phone from her morning ride to school.
Yui passed a volleyball to her and ran to the other side of the net, and yelled, “Let’s see what ya got!”
Y/n carried herself behind the serve line, taking one deep breath to keep her hands from shaking. With that exhale, she opened her eyes and focused her sights on Yui. The captain wouldn’t admit it, but she could already feel herself sweating under the first year’s gaze.
She looks so intimidating. I’m not even on the court, yet I’m scared. Yuma viewed Y/n’s determined look. For Y/n, it was as if everything crumbled away and the only thing remained was the court. She starts her run up.
A jump serve?! Yuma, Etsuko, and Chizuru incredulously thought simultaneously with eyes basically bugging out of their head. They watch in amazement as she jumps with severe height and reeled her arm back. After that, all that could be sensed was a loud snap and then the ball smacked the ground next to the wide-eyed captain. The impact from the ball gave a small breeze through Yui’s short hair. The deafening silence that followed her serve filled the room in an instant. Those watching from the sidelines had to pick up their jaws from the floor.
“She’s a first year?! Are you sure?!” Etsuko broke the silence with her curiosity getting the best of her.
“Boke Etsuko! That was already clarified, don’t make her repeat herself!” Yuma scolded. While Yui read your capabilities on your application form, it was nothing like actually being on the receiving end in real time.
“That’s quite a serve she got in her arsenal.” A voice startled the three high school students, sitting on the sidelines. Etsuko and Yuma were the most startled, but Chizuru was quite used to her fellow classmates popping in every now and then.
“Seriously, Sudou. We have to put a bell on you or something because I don’t think my heart can take any of your surprise entrances.” Sudou Rinko only slyly chuckles at Etsuko remark. She looks over at Y/n and Yui on the court.
“Did you guys see the precision on that serve?” Rinko posed to the other three sitting on the ground, munching on their lunch.
“Well, not really, but it landed, like, near Michimiya, right?” Etsuko tries to come up with the answer that Rinko was looking for.
“It landed right next to her left foot. I think that pipsqueak is able to aim her serve.”
“What?! That’s insane.”
“Yeah, insane, but not impossible.”
“With her, maybe we can win more games!”
“Don’t get your hopes up, Etsuko, a team is only good if everyone is giving their all.” Yuma reminds. “After all, there’s not only one person on the court, there’s six.”
“I heard she came from Niiyama Girls' High” Sudou stated as she reverted her gaze back to her fellow teammates. They stared at her after she gave more information on the stranger in their gym.
“Why would she come to Karasuno then?” Yuma asked honestly. She knew that her team had strengths, but she also knew that other teams had strengths that overpowered them.
“How could you diss your own school like that?” Etsuko was almost angry at how her teammate was treating their school. She always was the one to take pride in everything she does.
“No, that’s a valid question. It makes sense that a player with her caliber would be well-suited in a powerhouse school.” Rinko supported Yuma in her question. All four look ahead and see that Y/n is beginning to set for Yui.
“Her precision and accuracy are so on point, it almost makes me sick.” Yuma commented on how your form for setting only held the necessities. Y/n stepped with purpose, and it showed as she passed a nice set for Yui, allowing her to have optimal choices in where she can place her spike.
so um, that’s really all i got haha I started this like yesterday instead of doing hw so yeah. Feedback and constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. So, did u like it? Did u hate it? Are u confused by it? lol yeah okie bye

The two first years gave each other a look and started to walk towards Yui, and hopefully their new friend.
It was an ideal school in terms to the proximity to her new apartment, but that was not the only reason. She saw videos of their interhigh-prelims last year and to be quite frank, Y/n was not entirely impressed with the state of their team. However, she knew that this meant there was room to grow for them. She knew very well that she could have gone to Shiratorizawa and joined their girls’ volleyball.
Etsuko and Yuma were the most startled, but Chizuru was quite used to her fellow classmate popping in every now and then.
“I heard she came from Niiyama Girls' High.” Sudou stated as she reverted her gaze back to her fellow teammates.
The bell rang, ending lunch. Etsuko couldn’t wait for practice. She wanted to play against Y/n on the three on three. As for Yuma, she always wanted to learn how to set, but with her grand height, most people would assume she would be great as a spiker. Everyone started to pack their belongings up, heading to their respected classes. Y/n started to head towards class 1-5. Etsuko and Yuma caught up with Y/n, standing on the sides of her.
“Do you guys need something?” Y/n poses the question bluntly, yet she was quite startled. Y/n never expected to have people purposefully come up to her.
“Yeah, where did you learn to serve like that? It’s crazy!” Etsuko praises.
“Don’t you remember what Sasaki said? Don’t crowd her with questions, dumbass!” Yuma scolded, which Etsuko already had an irritated look on her face.
“It’s only one question! It’s not like she’s going to fall apart by it, and I just wanna know because I want be strong as well!” Etsuko’s vain on her forehead looked like it was having a field day.
“Yeah, like that would ever happen.” Yuma remarks.
“What did you just say?! I’m going to make you eat your words!”
“Ooo Frenchie has me shaking in my boots” Yuma taunts with the famous pink haired character from Grease. Etsuko started to jump at Yuma. Because Y/n was between them, she raised an arm.
“Please do not fight, you may cause a ruckus.” Y/n chimed in. The first years returned to their previous spots. Etsuko huffed a little and crossed her arms and slightly turned her head away.
“So, what class are you in? I am in class 1-4. I don’t think I have seen you in the hallways.” Yuma tries to maneuver the conversation to something other than volleyball. Y/n was honestly confused. It’s been awhile when someone her age, someone in her grade asked her a genuine question about herself. She almost felt it was some sort of joke.
“Um, I have class 1-5. And that’s because today’s my first day. Transferred a bit late.” Y/n had pauses in between her words, still not used to people going out of their way to talk to her.
“Woah! You must be pretty smart! That’s a college-prep class, right?” Yuma genuinely comments with a warm smile. Y/n nods, complements on stuff other than volleyball made Y/n short-circuit. The trio walks inside the main school building, the air condition changing the atmosphere. Y/n didn’t notice, but she received some stares from other students as the three walk through hallways. While Y/n remained oblivious, Yuma and Etsuko realized immediately and looked at each other with perplexed looks, not because of the stares that were directed towards you, but the fact that you seemed unfazed by it.
“Woah, who is that? She’s really pretty.” a student spoke to their friend.
“She’s new I’m pretty sure.” another commented.
“I heard she has a famous dad. She’s like loaded.”
“I wonder if she’s taken”
“I heard she came from California.”
“Someone told me she’s snooty.”
“Her looks certainly make up for it”
“Why is she hanging out with those weird volleyball girls?”
Etsuko physically jolted at that last comment, anyone can physically see the irritation on her face. She turned her head towards the voice of the last comment, wanting to immediately put them in their place. On the other hand, Y/n was too much in her head at the moment.
Shoot, I haven’t asked them a question. Well, that’s what I should do, right? That’s what friends do? Wait, we aren’t even friends, I just met them. They probably think I’m weird. Oh great, now I haven’t said anything for the past 3 minutes. They probably think I don’t like them. Y/n felt that this was weird foreign territory.
“So, what’s your favorite subject?” Y/n broke the silence, just wanting to say anything to make sure that her two future teammates knew that she was still invested in this conversation.
Are you serious, Y/n?! No one wants to talk about school, that’s so lame! They probably think you’re a smart ass. Uhg. You’re terrible at this. Y/n wanted to groan and bow her head in shame, but all she could do is hold her head high and follow through with her question.
“I like math, and you won’t get an actual subject out of Etsuko, she will probably say something stupid like lunch.” Yuma answered.
“Hey! Why do you keep answering for me?! I am fully capable of answering!” Etsuko barked at her snarky teammate.
“Yeah, your English grade can clearly vouch for you.” Yuma sarcastically stated. Etsuko looked like all the blood from her face left, looking quite pale due to her not so great English grade. Y/n didn’t realize it, but a small smile was on her face as she saw the two interact.
“Well, this is my stop, And, Etsuko, your stop was awhile ago.” Yuma stated as she didn’t really know if she should just send a wave your way or a handshake because Y/n seemed so formal. She settled with a pat on the back. Etsuko copied Yuma, but her pat was a bit more forceful and it really just turned into a smack. Y/n didn’t say anything, but noted that Etsuko has one hell of an arm on her.
“I already knew that! I wanted to talk to our new friend!” Etsuko looked like she was going to cross her arms and stomp her foot like a small child throwing a tantrum. Y/n stopped her walking when she heard the word “friend” come out of Etsuko’s mouth. Y/n turned to look at Etsuko and Yuma with a surprised look. Etsuko and Yuma instinctively thought they misspoke and perhaps angered you.
“We’re friends?” Y/n held a pause between the two words. Her incredulous face kept switching eye contact between the 2 first years in front of her. “You don’t even know if I will be your teammate yet.” Y/n stated. Etsuko bursted out in laughter and it caused Y/n’s face to turn beet red, embarrassed. Yuma’s face looked like she wanted to backhand Etsuko, but before she could, Etsuko spoke “You don’t have to be our teammate for us to be friends! There isn’t criteria the last time I checked to be friends. Besides, you’re really cool!”
Yuma retracted her arm, despite Etsuko being a dumbass, she somehow always knew what to say in awkward situations. Y/n felt something that spread through her chest. It was a warm, fuzzy feeling. Etsuko and Yuma bid there goodbye’s to Y/n, leaving her to get to her class. The feeling in her chest was not new, it’s just a feeling that she has not felt in a long time.
Y/n sat down in her seat and pulled out her notebook. Everyone started to take their seats. Right before the teacher reached to close the door, a short girl with a small blue hair tie in her short blonde hair just managed to slip through the door. She was out of breath and sweaty, muttering an apology and quickly sat at her desk, which was coincidentally on Y/n’s left side. The teacher began lecturing, instructing to open a page in their textbook.
The end of the school day approached rather quickly. Because of her most recent interaction with Etsuko and Yuma, she couldn’t wait for the three on three. Specifically, who would she be playing against. While thinking of possible offense moves to coordinate, Y/n grabs her volleyball bag from her locker and makes her way to the girl’s gym. The door was already open and she peaked through to make sure there was no way she will be tackled again. She makes eye contact with a girl with short black hair, which she vaguely remembers as Sudou Rinko.
“Hello! I’m sorry I am a bit early, I just wanted to get a head start in warming up because I do take awhile for those.” Y/n quickly explains with a hint of timidness.
“That’s alright! I already setted up the net so you’re welcome to warm up in here or outside, whichever you prefer.” Sudou stated, making sure she didn’t seem to overbearing as others perceive her to be.
“Okay, thank you. I do prefer outside.” As much as Y/n’s face held a deadpan look, she was nervous in front of the third year. She didn’t know if she could just head out or bow. Unfortunately, she went with the latter. Sudou cheeks turned red. She didn’t really expect that, I mean in her eyes, she’s just a third year. But, your formality was appreciated.
“Heh, no need to be so formal. I’ve seen what you can do even without warming up, and we would be lucky to have you on our team.” Sudou reassured.
Now it was Y/n’s turn to turn slightly red. She’s new to accepting genuine compliments. So, all she did was a weird salute with a firm nod of her head, and headed out.
That kid has an interesting way of interacting with people. Sudou thought to herself. Hopefully, she’ll be able to open up more. Sudou busied herself by warming up as well.
In the meantime, Y/n found a spot near the side of the gym where there were no trees and the sun just perfectly drenched the scenery with natural light. It was as if the sun placed a golden film over everything and settled on a calm atmosphere. Here, Y/n began stretching.
After awhile, Y/n was tossing a volleyball up in the air, getting comfortable with how the ball fit perfectly in her hands as she set it in the air. After a couple of sets, she got into the rhythm of bumping, setting, and spiking against a wall. While she was focused on the ball, out of her peripheral vision, she notices someone. After a spike, rather than bumping it, she catches it.
“If you are going to stare any longer, I expect a name out of you.” Y/n stated with a calm yet stern tone while still staring at the wall in front of her.
“I-I’m sorry. You just seem so focused.” The stranger spoke.
Y/n closes her eyes, when she opens them, she turns to look at the stranger. He’s tall, way taller than her. He’s got a beard and his hair is pulled into a tight bun. If Y/n didn’t know any better, she would have assumed he was a teacher, but he was wearing a school uniform after all. With her eyes set on him, it was as if the guy visibly shook in fear and eyes widened.
“Well, you have to be, in an actual game of course.” Y/n responded.
“You play?” The mysterious guy asks. He does have a calming voice for someone who looks like the opposite.
“In order for me to answer, you should give me your name. I’ve been taught to not talk to strangers.”
“Oh r-right. I’m Azumane Asahi.”
There was a beat of silence as Y/n kept staring at him, deciding how she should approach this conversation. In Asahi’s eyes, he thought she was judging him and he started to wonder why didn’t he just mind his own business.
“Yes, I play.” Y/n answered his previous question. Asahi perked up at her answer like a little puppy.
“You seem like you’re really dedicated.” Asahi offered his observation to her. Y/n chuckles. Asahi’s eyes widened once more at the sudden reaction out of the girl.
“I’m guessing you play as well.” Asahi was dumbfounded at your observation. He was scared at how you were able to pick that up quickly.
“H-how did you-”
“Someone who is able to easily recognize the dedication in one person, also finds that same dedication within themselves”
Damn, this girl is wise. Asahi thought.
“However, volleyball was just a guess.” Y/n continued. “And I was lucky enough to be right.”
“Well, I don’t know about that.”
Y/n looked at him again. Y/n wasn’t one to let someone divulge into their personal life. Mainly because no one really came up to her for advice since she was quite the nonchalant person. However, if today is any indication, it seems her social interaction skills has been given a second shot. Y/n analyzed Asahi’s troubled face.
“Are you having an internal battle?”
How unfortunate that you phrased it that way, Y/n. Jeez. You can be so formal sometimes. Y/n scolded herself.
“Yeah, of some sorts.” Asahi responded with a puzzling look at the ground.
“About volleyball?” Y/n specified.
“Uh, yeah.” he reluctantly responded.
“What’s up?” Y/n knew that was more informal and she mentally high-fived herself for talking like a normal teenager.
“Can I ask you a question?”
“Yeah”
“Have you ever not wanted to do something because you failed at it?”
A beat of silence.
“No.” Y/n said confidently. However, she knew what he was trying to ask, so she added, “But, I’ve felt frustrated at it before.”
“Isn’t that the same thing?”
“Well, tell me, can you be frustrated at something yet you want keep trying it?”
Asahi didn’t respond, just thinking of what she said.
“The answer is yes, by the way. Volleyball is a sport where you are constantly improving yourself, just like any other sport really.” Y/n started to blabber on. “Volleyball provides that uncomfortable tension of not being enough. For some people, it discourages them completely, leaving them to quit or be stagnant. But, there are rare cases where the person is strongly encouraged by it. Those are the people who really do succeed.”
Asahi was deep in thought as he processed your words. As Y/n looks at Asahi, he looks like he’s going to hurt himself if he thinks any harder.
“Here, stand over there. Let me set for you.” Y/n commanded. Asahi Looks up, “h-how did you know I spike?” At this point, he thought you were some sort of psychic.
Y/n shrugs, “Only an ace would have that mindset and label a simple mistake as a “failure”. You feel like you’re whole team depends on you, right?” Asahi nods with shame. “Well, I think you need to understand that the other 5 people on your side have their own jobs as well. Sure, they know that you are capable of grabbing a point, but that’s because they are supporting you in the process.”
Asahi is quite overwhelmed at all the truth you are speaking, but it makes sense to him. Asahi obeys and walks where you pointed to.
“Now, run up like you are going to spike. You’re job is to knock,” Y/n grabs an apple from her lunch box, “this off of this trashcan.” Y/n places the apple on the the tin can and positions it in the way where a blocker would be in terms of where Asahi is standing. “Imagine this,” she draws a line in the dirt with her foot, “is the net. And, I don’t doubt that you are able to hit over the net.”
“O-oh I don’t know, you see, I haven’t really-”
“Just do it.” Y/n cuts him off with a sigh. Asahi gulps and catches the ball from Y/n.
He takes a deep breathe in. And a deep breathe out. He tosses the ball to you. Of course, Y/n perfectly sets the ball for him.
She notices after those deep breathes, it seems Asahi is a completely different person. He looks more focused and confident. His eyes are concentrated on the ball.
After the set, Y/n quickly looks over at the tin trashcan. And lo and behold, her apple is now on the dirt floor. Y/n smiles fondly. Asahi carries the most precious smile on his face.
“Now, how did that feel?” Y/n questions him.
“Makes me want to do another.” Asahi was staring at his hand as if the key to life was written on his hand. He then looked over at Y/n with a glint of inspiration in his eyes.
“The boys volleyball team should still be practicing, right? I still have to start my own practice.” Y/n shares a soft smile, which she hasn’t done in awhile. Asahi reverts back to a nervous state. Y/n’s guessing there is some awkward tension between that relationship.
“Just go to them. It never hurts to just try, right?” Y/n tries her best to be encouraging, but not too pushy.
“I-I don’t know I left them so suddenly-”
“Just go! Or else.” Y/n knew she shouldn’t use fear as a tactic to push him, but to be quite frank, it’s useful in these rare occasions. Asahi fervently nods, he didn’t want to hear what came after ‘what else’ so he quickly grabs his bag and starts his jog to the boy’s gym.
“Oh wait! What’s your name?” Asahi was already a bit far, so she had to yell, “Y/n! Good luck!” She cups her mouth as if that will totally help her voice travel to him. “Well, thank you, Y/n!”
Y/n picks up her things and heads towards the gym, where she has her own journey to embark on.

Episode 2
Kageyama x f!reader
warning: may contain manga/anime spoilers! strong language probably!
description: In which Y/n is a new addition to Karasuno’s Girl’s Volleyball Club
I’m pretty sure this is the pilot episode but hopefully I did this right:
a/n: Okay! here is the next episode! Idk why but I like naming these episodes. Also, if you haven’t noticed, I’m trying to keep in the timeline as season 1. Hopefully that’s not going to be a pain in the ass later, but yeah! I hope you enjoy!
Y/n approached the gym and entered by sliding the steel door. The whole team was there and they were finishing warming up with serves. Everyone was mostly doing overhand serves. But what caught Y/n’s eyes was Etsuko. She had her eyes closed and taking deep breathes. Y/n slightly tilts her head to the side.
What is she doing? Y/n ponders. Yuma sees Y/n and approaches her. She sees how Y/n is staring at Etsuko.
“She can do a jump serve?” Y/n watches as Etsuko starts a run up. The ball hit the middle of the net.
The whole team erupts in fits of laughter.
“No, she can’t.” Yuma clarifies.
“Woah, Etsuko, you’re gonna give Y/n a run for her money!” Rinko exclaimed and continued to chuckle with the other third years. Other players snicker and make some harmless, little jokes.
“Oh, please. At least I am trying!” Etsuko huffs in protest to the teasing. Y/n approaches Etsuko.
‘You’re right. It’s good that you’re trying. The toss was great, the timing was off, but that’s what practice is for.” Y/n says honestly.
Etsuko was not really expecting Y/n’s hard-hitting honesty but it was a breathe of fresh air from the teasing. She takes a long look at Y/n, for a teenager, she sure is mature.
Nonethless, you’re flattery made her cheeks tinge with red, “I was really just copying what you did earlier.” She says shyly.
At this, Y/n eyes widened, “Do I really look that serious?!” She had never really paid any attention to what she might look like towards others while she is in play. Up until now, she only focused on the game because, well, that’s just how she plays. Etsuko and Yuma chuckle at Y/n’s reaction.
“Yeah, it was as if your looks could kill.” The 3 first years turn to the voice to see the captain, Michimiya Yui, “so, I hope you’re all warmed up cause we will be starting the three on three.”
“Right, who will be playing?” Y/n inquires.
“I was thinking Moe and Yuma will be on your team. Then, the opposing team will consist of Aoki, Yua, and I.” Y/n nods at the captains words.
“Wait, WHAT?!” everyone turned to Etsuko’s outburst.
“Oh no.” Yuma quietly mumbles.
“I wanted to play in the three on three!” Etsuko almost sounded like a child that was ready to throw a tantrum. She had her arms crossed, thinking of a plan to get her way somehow. “What about we make it more interesting. The first years versus the third years.” She smirks.
“Etsuko, you turd, don’t go against the captain!” Yuma bonks Etsuko’s heads. Etsuko instinctively held her head and dramatically fell to the ground, “OW! You know my head’s sensitive”, she pouts.
Yui laughs at the interaction and starts to think about her offer. Sudou approaches Yui, “You aren’t actually thinking about that as an actual option, right?”
Yui smiles, “I mean, why not? I already know Y/n is an exceptional player. This three on three really serves as a nice introduction through friendly competition.”
Sudou thinks over Yui’s words, “You aren’t wrong.” She looks over at the first years. All three of them. “What about we add to your idea, Etsuko. Whichever team loses has to be the other team’s servants for,” Sudou puts her hand on her chin and looks up, acting like she is in a real deep thought, “three whole weeks”.
“THREE WHOLE WEEKS?!” Etsuko begins to regret opening her mouth.
“What would we have to do?” Yuma almost didn’t want to ask, afraid of the severity of the word ‘servant’.
“Oh, just the simple, worshiping the ground they walk on, get them or make food when they ask, and help them with virtually anything if they ask a favor.” Sudou smirks.
All the previous color on Etsuko and Yuma’s face were practically gone, looking like they are going to faint. Y/n looks at their state worriedly, How little do you think of yourselves?! You guys can’t be that bad, right? Y/n turns to look at the 2nd years and some are already on their knees, hands together. They’re praying for us?! Y/n gulps.
Y/n reverts her gaze back at Sudou Rinko, the third year. Her classic, neutral face making a comeback as she takes a calming breathe. This girl sure knows how to think of a punishment.
“You’re on.” Y/n holds out her hand. Rinko firmly shakes your hand. She was pleasantly surprised by the guts that Y/n has for not backing down to a challenge.
“Splendid. So, it will be you three, against Mao, Yui, and Chizuru.” All the girls who weren’t playing in the three on three were buzzing with excitement as they took their seats on the sidelines. They made small talk such as conversing on who they think will win.
“Oi, get up. We’re going to start.” Y/n ordered the two first years. Both of them grudgingly got up and stood in front of Y/n.
“Okay, so what can you tell me about Mao and Chizuru?”
The pair looked at each other as if they were talking with their eyes, deciding on who should talk first.
Etsuko scratched her head, “Yeah, um. I don’t really know what to tell you. I don’t really know how to, like, analyze people like you probably do.”
Y/n was mentally pinching the bridge of her nose.
“I know Chizuru has been really working on her receives.” Yuma chimes in. “As for Mao, well, she’s the tallest person on our team, so I’m guessing her blocks and spikes will be difficult to pick up.”
Y/n nods. Interestingly enough, Y/n did not ask the worried pair this question for the actual information they would give her. She asked the question to see how well her current teammates analyze their opponent from prior knowledge.
Y/n has seen the third years play. At times they lacked the spirit and in some areas, the technique, to carry through with both defense and offense, which is coincidentally really important. As third years, they do serve as an example for the grades below them. So, if they are lacking, it’s only probable that the team will follow behind.
Only in some spur-of-the-moment instances she would see the fire ignite within them, but that was really it. While there are many holes in their team, it doesn’t mean they are hopeless.
“Wait, why didn’t you ask anything about Captain Yui?” Etsuko jumped back into the conversation.
“Well, I already saw how she spiked when I sent some sets her way. She’s got power and stamina backing her up, but she is lacking in technique and in game sense, so that will give us some points when blocking.” Etsuko and Yuma looked at each other as Y/n kept talking about what she has observed over the limited time she has been in the gym. They were plainly shocked at how observant Y/n is and can only imagine what she thinks of them.
“Okay, let’s go out there and have fun, guys.” Despite the literal meaning of Y/n’s statement. Her tone and face did not match, so it really just was uneasy for Etsuko and Yuma to experience as Y/n smacked their backs before walking towards where she would start in the game.
“Would you guys want to receive?” Yui asks as she grabs a volleyball.
“Yeah, we’ll receive.” Y/n confirmed, getting into position.
Yui send a overhand serve there way. Etsuko receives it.
“It’s short, sorry!” Etsuko calls out
Y/n runs under the ball, “got it!” And lifts the ball towards, “Yuma!” near the net.
Yuma jumps to spike, however Mao is there, ready to block. They make solid eye-contact that felt like years to Yuma, It’s as if she’s piercing my soul with her eyes. Unfortunately, Yuma got psyched out and almost forgot to make contact with the ball. Yuma ends up accidentally just lifting the ball right over Mao’s block, committing to a feint.
Yui flies towards the ground with her left arm stretched out, she’s able to put the ball in the air.
“Chizuru!” The timid third year bumps it towards the net. Y/n makes a judgment call.
“It’s over the net.” Other players would probably yell that comment, but Y/n never really saw the point in yelling when her teammates are merely a couple feet away from her. Her pain level of volume almost made her two other teammates more on edge due to the unfamiliarity of it, rather than someone screaming the comment.
As Y/n suspected, the ball just barely made it over the net.
“Again!” Mao yells as she bumps it towards Y/n.
With a side glance, Y/n notices that Yui and Mao are guarding Yuma. She takes a quick look to Etsuko and mentally smirked, no blockers, Y/n needed to somehow tell Etsuko without giving it away because with Yui’s speed, she will definitely be able to retrieve it.
It was merely seconds, but Y/n stared Etsuko down and gave a slight lift of her chin in an upwards direction, hoping that Etsuko can decode it and define it as, jump.
Relying on her instincts, Etsuko miraculously picked up what Y/n was getting at. At least, she thinks.
That nod was for me, right? I think she wants me to spike it from where I am. Oh, but I’m a bit far from the net. I’ve only done spikes close to the net because I’m scared of it not going over. Despite Yuma insisting on how Etsuko never thinks before she acts, Etsuko is quite the overthinker.
The thing was, Yuma was confident that you were going to send the ball her way. After all, according to Yuma’s knowledge, Estuko typically put too much power into her spikes, sending them out of bounds. She thought Y/n would pick up on this on how over-zealous she is about practically anything. Thus, Yuma started her run up.
We’ve got you now, Yui and Mao solely focusing on Yuma, making sure they jump at the correct time.
Despite their efforts in blocking, which would have been a perfect one that would kill the ball, the ball hit the ground loudly with a smack. All that could be heard was the ball bouncing from its earlier impact.
The look of surprise on everyone’s faces in that gym was priceless. However, the most shocked person was the person who actually did it. Etsuko looked down at her slightly red hand. She clenched her hand into a fist. She will never get tired of the feeling.
Etsuko looks at Yuma and they both give out unintelligible sounds of excitement. They hug each other as if that one point meant a hundred points.
Y/n let out a breathe she didn’t know she was holding. And she looks over at her teammates. It looks like they opened their hug, expecting a third person.
That’s you, dumbass. You’re the third person. Y/n physically jolted at the realization. Etsuko motioned her hand for Y/n.
Y/n hesitantly put both her arms on the middle of their back, barely touching as if they had a disease. She didn’t know what was too close so she played it safe. Etsuko and Yuma didn’t pay any attention to the awkwardness of Y/n and was rejoicing.
“Hold on, wait a minute! Did you actually use your stupid head? How did you do that? Usually you knock it out of the park.” Yuma didn’t want to praise Etsuko too much, knowing it would inflate her ego too much.
“Oh, shut up. I got the first point, didn’t I?”
“Yeah, you’re the most surprised out of everybody. I bet it was a fluke.”
“Shut your mouth or I’ll shut it myself!”
“HA! I’d like to see you’re scrawny ass try!”
“If I’m scrawny, then what are you?”
The teasing would never stop. Y/n intervened, “That wasn’t a fluke.”
Yuma, and even Etsuko, was confused at Y/n’s statement. With her spike track record in recognition, it makes sense for that success to be a one time thing.
“Are you sure, Y/n? You don’t have to be nice to Etsuko if you don’t want to. She’s not intimidating.”
“Why do you always find a way to diss me when you aren’t even talking to me” Etsuko grumbles. “But I agree, partly, with Yuma here. I’m pretty sure it was a fluke too.”
Y/n shakes her head side to side. “It wasn’t.” She turns to Etsuko.
“Etsuko, tell me if I am correct, before this three on three, you have always spiked the ball that was tossed to you right near the net.
Um, isn’t that where you are supposed to spike? Etsuko questions in her head.
“Yeah, you’re right.”
“Right now, you spiked the ball behind the attack line, and let me add how you didn’t even use a running start.” With this, Y/n now turned to Yuma.
“Now correct me if I am wrong, Yuma, Etsuko will swing at the ball with all her might, regardless of how tired she is.”
“Yeah, you got that spot on”
“You see, where Etsuko lacks in technique-”
Etsuko deflates.
“-she makes up for raw swinging power.”
She immediately straightens her posture and smiles at the complement.
Y/n continues, “it is because of your distance from the net that gave you leverage on actually hitting it within their side of the court.”
“Wait, Etsuko hasn’t ever shot a spike from there, so had did you even know she would even make it over the net? And how did you know that Etsuko would know to jump?” Yuma brings up a good point.
“I didn’t” Y/n simply stated.
Yuma and Etsuko looked almost disturbed at her answer. She didn’t have anything backing up her decision?
“You really tried something as risky as that when the stakes are so high?” Yuma questions in shock.
“I know I don’t seem like a person to do something like that without thinking it through but-” Y/n turns her head to the side to look at them, “I feel like I can trust you guys to back me up.”
Etsuko and Yuma almost teared up at Y/n’s confession. The morale in their team was boosted to a hundred because of this, which is just what they needed to keep them motivated. They felt they can take on the world-
“We still need 24 more points to win one set. And then another set.” Y/n looks over at the scoreboard, seeing the 1-0.
At Y/n’s sudden statement, Etsuko and Yuma embarrassingly looked down at how this is the only beginning.
On the other side of the court, the third years gathered to tell each other apologies, to shake it off, and assuring they will get the next one.
It’s Etsuko’s serve.
“Protect your head, Y/n.” Yuma instructs.
“Oh shut it, Yuma!”
Etsuko exhales. I can do this. It’s not that hard. I will be the strongest volleyball player there is. The last statement is basically a mantra for Etsuko. The thing that is special with Etsuko is that she is never afraid to try new things. Even when the probability of her failing is so high and her probability to succeed is so little. To her, that little probable outcome still stands as a chance. And she always takes it, no matter what. She will try anything, finding what works and hone that skill. On the court, it’s deadly. For the opposing team, that is.
She’s not actually trying again to do a jump serve, is she? Rinko questions as she notices that she is far away from the court line.
Yui smiles with a shake of her head, this kid never stops trying.
Etsuko looks straight ahead, just get it over the net.
She hears the whistle blow and she takes her run up and jumps. Her serve whizzes past the net, the third years not touching it.
However, it was out.
Etsuko grumbles and hangs her head in shame.
“Hey. shake it off! It’s alright” Y/n reassures. Yuma merely chuckles, but Etsuko hears her.
“What are you laughing at?! Do I have to beat your ass again?” Etsuko starts to animatedly rolls up her sleeve of her sweatshirt with a prominent vain on her neck. The two start to bicker as per usual.
This is going to be a long game. Y/n exhales a big breathe as she gets down for the next serve.
The score is 23-24. Both teams are clawing for each point. There was never a severe point difference, neither team was able to break away.
It’s Y/n’s serve.
Yuma and Etsuko felt comforted that she will be serving, if anything, they feel confident they will be able to at least do a deuce.
Chizuru mentally groaned. God, her jump serves are so hard to receive.
Y/n looks so focused, many thought who viewed the skilled first year.
She does her run up.
Chizuru instantly recognizes and smirks, This isn’t her usual jump serve! This is a jump float! Just like I’ve practiced.
“Chizuru, it’s all you!” Yui calls out to her, she knows that she has been dedicating most of her time in personal practice on her receives. This is her time to shine.
Just like in practice from all those hours, Chizuru gives in to her muscle memory and makes the receive look so effortless.
Damn it, thought it was a good idea to pull that serve out. So she has specialized receiving jump floats. Impressive. Y/n recollects her thoughts and moves up for defense. Mao sets it to Yui and she spikes, but Yuma is there, block timing on point, killing the ball’s momentum.
Etsuko made the mistake letting her guard down for a split second, mainly because Yui is known for her perfected flying receives, but she thought she wouldn’t be able to pull one off as she just spiked and is on the other side of the court in regards to the ball.
Despite this, Chizuru flies onto the ground and is able to pick up the ball.
“It didn’t hit the floor.” Y/n informs her teammates. They both are shocked, thinking they had it in the bag.
The ball barely cleared the net, Etsuko, being the closest, tried to attempt the same type of receive, but her hand was not able to make contact, resulting the ball to bounce right in front of her eyes.
“The first set goes to the third years!” Rinko annouces.
“Uhg, I’m sorry, guys! I shouldn’t have let my guard down, it’s my fault.” Etsuko furiously bowing up and down again. It’s mainly to Y/n because she has yet to know how Y/n will deal with this. Yuma on the other hand, “Hey, it’s alright, you were bound to make a mistake at some point”, she smirks, taunting yet again just to get her riled up.
“Oh, shut up! I don’t care what you think!” Her apologetic tone disappearing as she talks to Yuma.
“It’s okay, Etsuko! It’s not your fault. We are a team, we take it together. We may have lost the first set, but we still got another one so there’s no time to think about what we could have done.” Y/n explains.
There is a small break to rehydrate and a breather. Nonetheless, the second set was about to start as the three on three switch sides.
The second set was harder than the first. Not because both teams were exhausted, it was as if something was ignited within both teams. They were continuously pushing each other as the set went on. Like the last set, there was no big point gap, but this time, the first years were surprisingly in the lead, as the scores are 19-21.
“Damn, this time the first years beat them in getting in the 20′s” one of the second years said, which was the official setter, Manami Aoki, a second year.
“I think they might take the set!” Another second year chimes in who plays middle blocker, Takei Katsu.
Just like she said, the first years did take the second set. Yuma was able to snuff the ball’s momentum from Yui’s spike for the winning point.
“I honestly thought this wasn’t going into a third set.” Matsuda Yua, a second year. She’s a middle blocker and an outside hitter, she voices her thoughts.
“Hm, yeah. At face value, it seemed the third years would win in straight sets, but it seems the first years got some spunk that’s saving their ass.” Takai rationalizes.
“Yeah, I see that” Aoki agrees with her.
“Yeah, but I think they got more than spunk with that volleyball prodigy on their team.”
The second years turned one to one their fellow classmates, Watabe Nozomi, their libero. She wasn’t one to really talk to other people, which includes her teammates. She was silent most of the time, but she was super reliable, both on and off the court. They never wanted to force her in opening up about herself so for the most part, they let her be one of the most reserved people on their team.
Because of their knowledge of her personality and attitude, they were shocked at how she was actually taking part in the conversation. Not that they minded, they always wanted to get to know her better. The way their team works is that they are more than just teammates, they care for each other outside of volleyball and want the best for them, regardless of what happens on the court.
They form this bond with one another, which makes their actions on the court to be more naturally cohesive. This is one of the strengths that their club possesses. And it’s not that they force this bond, it’s the love for volleyball that brings them together.
“She must be really something if she got Nozomi talking about her.” Rinko looks over the second years as she stands on the side with her whistle.
Nozomi’s cheeks tinge with some red as she gets called out. The second years chuckle a bit at her reaction.
“You really think she is a prodigy?” Aoki asks.
“She seems really in tuned with her body. It’s like she is hyper-aware of her surroundings and makes fast decisions that almost always ensure a point.” Nozomi comments. The second years nod in agreement and acknowledgment.
“I don’t think she’s a prodigy, I mean, those types of people are born with skill. While, Y/n seems she has built upon her skills over the years, which is impressive in itself.” Rinko adds in.
Rinko had it right. Y/n was not a prodigy or some sort of genius. She was someone who practiced, practiced, and practiced some more. She devoted so much of her time and energy into volleyball that it only made sense that she excels in it.
As the third set nears the end, the first years make a surprising break away. The points being 23-19.
“We might actually be getting our own servants” Etsuko pants as exhaust dawning on her.
“Yeah, if we continue to play smart, we might win this thing” Yuma continues.
“We can do this, guys. Let’s play strong till the very end.” Y/n gave a thumbs up at her teammates. And smiled. Well, she tried.
“Uh, what’s up with your face, dude? If you gotta take a shit, then go ahead. We can take a short break” Etsuko assures Y/n.
“You idiot! Can’t you see she’s smiling.” Yuma karate chops Etsuko’s head, resulting in a yelp and her hands to fly to her head at the impact.
Poor Y/n is truly trying her best, but she was not preparing to show much emotion today, or any day for that matter. She had to shake it off and she can worry about being not emotionally available later.
It was Y/n’s turn to serve. All three third years internally groaned. She decides to serve it over to Chizuru, specifically right behind her left foot.
The ball actually lands behind her right foot. Despite being at game point, Y/n couldn’t help but feel irritated at how inaccurate her serve was. The girl holds herself to a high standard. She sighs, she knows she’s getting tired. She needs to assure this win, but what’s the best option?
Y/n is deep in thinking as her teammates are rejoicing at the mere possibility of having the third years as servants.
Then, it becomes so obvious. She does a short serve. The ball flying just over the net, forcing Moa to retrieve the ball with a bump. Yui then spikes the ball over. Y/n smirks.
Yuma receives the ball, sending it over to Y/n.
“Etsuko!” Y/n calls out to her.
They are thinking of doing that attack from earlier, where Etsuko spiked from behind the attack line! Yui resolves.
Yui and Mao push their forces opposite of Etsuko, waiting for the awaiting spike.
However, the spike never comes, but the ball is already bouncing on the third years court.
A SETTER DUMP?! everyone thought they were going to lose their minds.
Yuma and Etsuko was the first to scream out of pure exhilaration of winning against the third years. They tackled an unexpecting Y/n to the ground. Y/n sort of short-circuited. She was not used to this.
“We did it! We actually did it!” Etsuko exclaimed.
“Can’t believe we pulled that off.” Yuma added in.
“However, I really thought you were sending it over to me.” Etsuko crossed her arms and pouted.
“Sorry about that.” Y/n raises her hand to the back of head, “I knew if I got you on the ropes, they would be as well.”
“And hey, think of this way, your gullibility actually paid off this time!”
“Don’t make me beat your ass again!”
“You wanna go?!”
“You guys make a good team” Yui chimes in.
The two stop their bickering at the sound of their team captain’s voice.
“Ha, yeah. I guess we do.” Y/n stood up, while helping Etsuko and Yuma up as they are still looking at each other with looks that are like daggers at each other. “You guys played a good game as well.” Y/n reassured the third years, “I’d be honored to play on your team.”
Yui looks over at Rinko, “You already have it, don’t you?”
“Of course.” Rinko responds. Much to Y/n’s confusion as to what they are talking about.
Rinko walks over to a package that was on the sidelines, opening it up and pulling out a black jacket, representing Karasuno.
Y/n’s eyes widened. She doesn’t understand why she’s acting this way. It’s just a jacket. She had a strong feeling she was going to get in the club, so why what was this warm feeling in her chest?
Before she realizes it, the jacket is in her hands and she is enveloped in a group hug from the whole time.
“I won’t let you guys down!” Y/n declares in a rather former manner.
“We know.” Yui confirms.
Y/n felt safe, but there was a hesitant feeling that she shouldn’t get used to it.
“Okay! Today was meant to be an easy day, but don’t think tomorrow is going to be the same. In fact, it’s safe to say it’s only going to get harder from here.” Rinko announces.
The team collectively groans.
“After we clean the gym, we have some important news. So, hurry up!” Yui ordered, resulting in the team to scatter in cleaning and disassembling the net.
It didn’t take too long, and the team soon sat on the cool gym floor as Yui and Rinko stood before them.
“So, as you may know, we have been lacking the coach department, as in, we have no coach.” Rinko stated blandly.
“But, someone has graciously volunteered to coach us, and just to reassure you guys, so you guys think its not some rando. I did some research on him, and let’s just say he’s like a legend in the volleyball world.” Yui says.
Oo’s and awe’s can be heard among the team.
Who could it be? A legend?! Why Karasuno of all places? Many questions were flying about in the gym.
“Okay, okay. In addition to that, he’s known to be, well, harsh with his training.” Yui continues.
“Harsher than Rinko?” Etusko interrupts.
“Oi, don’t make me give you laps.”
“You’re proving my point!”
“Anyways, we will meet him tomorrow and he has requested that we start immediately in order to see what we need to work on. So, come tomorrow mentally prepared for that.” Yui informs.
“Alright, that’s all. Get out of here and get some good rest!” Rinko instructed.
The only noise that was coming from the gym was now faint conversations of the mystery coach and homework, shoes squeaking, and bags getting picked up. The girls started to leave the gym in pairs or trios.
“Hey Y/n, you want to walk home with us? It’s seems our game went a bit longer than expected and it’s pretty dark outside.” Yuma proposed to Y/n.
Y/n’s cheeks turned pink at the friendly gesture. They want to walk? With her? It’s not that big of a deal but it’s enough for Y/n to feel like she might be actually real friends with them. Y/n smiles fondly at them.
“Yeah, I’d like that.”
The three first years make their way out, but before they leave the area, Y/n spots Asahi! With some new-found confidence, Y/n decided to call out his name, “Hey, Asahi!”
There were some boys that were with him, and Y/n could only assume that those were some of his teammates. Asahi tensed up at the sudden call, but as he found the source of it, he reverted back to a calmer state.
“H-hey Y/n”
Y/n noticed that there was a grey haired boy and a dark haired one on either side of him. They were pretty tall in comparison to Y/n.
“So, how was practice?”
Asahi realized how confusing this looked to his fellow teammates. Sugawara and Daichi just looked at each other with puzzled looks.
“Oh, it went good! I think, I’m back on the team.”
“That’s good to hear. I’d like to set for you again sometime,” Y/n looked back to see her new friends who weren’t as puzzled as Asahi’s friends were, but more intimidated by how big Asahi is, “I got to get going. Goodbye!” Y/n waved and started to head back to her friends as they began to walk to the school’s entrance.
“Set?”
“Again?”
“You’ve played volleyball with her?”
“Is that the real reason you’ve been gone for a month?”
“She’s cute.”
“Yeah, is she in our grade?”
“G-guys! I just met her today, I swear!” Asahi waved off all their overwhelming questions. “I don’t know her that well, but I do know she plays volleyball,” he then takes a glance over to Y/n’s retreating figure with her two other friends who seem to laughing at something, “and she seems to be really dedicated to it.”
Little did Y/n know, a certain black-haired boy with blue eyes was also staring at her retreating figure and couldn’t help but overhearing Asahi’s conversation with Y/n. He grew curious and wanted to learn more.
“Hey Kageyama, are you even listening to me?!”

So, Kageyama is awkward with people at first
He would just stare and talk when asked
But you mention volleyball and you are not allowed to talk anymore
When he realised it he just blushes profusely and looks down at his feet
He stays silent for the rest
Kageyama isn't shy, but everyone thinks he is because he doesn't talk to anyone outside the volleyball club
He hates group works at school
He changes flavor of milk and/or yogurt every time he buys it at the school's machines (how do you call it in english? Like snack machines? I'm ignorant in this case, I'm sorry)
He hates parties
Like, he genuinely prefers to study than to go to a party
Before his drastic change in middle school he often hanged out with his sister when she could
And he would be the sweetest boy to her
She still teases him about it
Whenever he's out with her she embarasses him because she's the oldest and she can
Hinata still laugh at him about some embarassing story
This is common, but he probably tries to cut his hair
And Miwa has to adjust his mess
He actually facetimed shoyo a lot during the timeskip
He needed a bit of time to come to terms that he wouldn't toss to him for a long time, but eventually he began to talk to him like usual
He probably goes shopping with his sister because she said he has no taste in clothes
He actually has no taste in clothes

the hand gesture is pretty much imbedded into his brain, same with volleyball
oikawa sometimes asks takeru to take photos of you and him together, and those photos end up looking cute asf
because you guys are a power couple, the most attractive human beings around
"tooru, why do you always want to be in my photos?"
"just because."
"because what?"
"I- have you seen this face?"
"many times, your point?"
"just admit it. I'm cute. when we're together in a photo, the amount of hotness radiating of it will be off the charts!"
"oh. so my looks aren't enough?"
"of course they're enough!"
"just please take my photo. WITHOUT you in it for once."
"..."
"tooru."

oh my god the KING of photography
akaashi knows every good angle you have
he loves taking photos from the back and from the front
because of the aesthetic and your pretty face :)
all the lighting in your photos is impeccable
this man will NOT take a photo in a room with shitty lighting, he'd gladly grab your hand and walk you out to a place well-lit
one time you asked him why he loves taking photos of you in nature, since it makes up 75% of your camera roll
he simply replied: "two beautiful things in one photo. what's not to love?
"keiji, may you take a pic of me please? I need it to update my instagram."
"sure, where?"
"here is fine."
"...no"
"???"
"the lighting is poor, darling. let's go somewhere else."
𝗔𝗧𝗦𝗨𝗠𝗨 𝗠𝗜𝗬𝗔

this bitch will not stop taking photos of you at random times
like all his photos be blurry asf?
???
he does not take the time to stand the fuck still and take a good photo
it always happens when y'all are walking
sometimes the photo looks aesthetic and pretty, but the other times? needs some work
he tells you you look pretty in every photo, and that lighting, angle and stuff doesn't matter
most of the time, yes it fucking does
but he does take some cute photos of you together so he can boast about his cute s/o to osamu, and his friends
but pls, can akaashi help this man?
"what the fuck, 'tsumu"
"yes?~"
"why is this so blurry?"
"I don't know, you tell me."
"could you like- maybe stop taking photos of me when we're moving? you can barely make out my facial features in this one!"
"I can still tell you're pretty though"
"I don't understand you sometimes"
𝗦𝗘𝗠𝗜 𝗘𝗜𝗧𝗔

obsessed with the grunge aesthetic
it matches his vibe, being a band musician and all
if he finds a cool looking wall or a parking garage, he'd ask if he could take a photo of you
and when you try one of his instruments, he would take a pic of you attempting a new chord on the guitar
he just loves to capture cool ass moments like these
"woah- eita, look at this mural! it's looks sick!"
"you should get a photo then"
"say less."
"move to your left a bit- there we go"
"how does it look?"
"looks sick."

Friday July 25th
Ayano Shimizu awoke to an aching pain in her legs. She was instantly reminded of her harsh swimming practice the day before and sat up in bed.
Glancing around her room, she grabbed her phone from the nightstand and checked for any new messages. Yawning, she replied to Kiyoko's message.

Grabbing the nearest hair tie, she pulled her shoulder length hair into a ponytail. 6:30 am. Throwing away the last of the purple hair dye, she looked at herself in the mirror.
Seems like I did my ombre right this time, she thought to herself. Heading downstairs, she found her younger brother Toshiaki arguing with her older sister, Yuuka.
"Hey Ayano, can you get your sister?" Yuuka scoffed, "He's the one who ate all my candy." "No I didn't." Ayano grabbed the empty box from both of them, "I ate the rest of your candy. Are Mom and Dad already gone?" They nodded in unison and Ayano threw the box away.
She grabbed the eggs out of the fridge and began cracking two of them into a pan. "Hey Yuuka can you make lunch for us?" Yuuka nods and nudges Toshiaki to set the table up. Finishing the eggs, Ayano uses leftover kobachi to finish making breakfast.
"Thank you for the meal."
After eating, Ayana headed upstairs to finish getting dressed for the day. Sharing a room with her sister Yuuka, she rarely ever got to the hot water first.
While waiting for her sister to finish, she packed her backpack. Adding the new charm she purchased yesterday to the keychain attached to her bag, she heard the shower turn off. Ayano grabbed her towel and uniform and raced to the bathroom they shared together.
After enjoying her shower, she glanced at the clock once more. 7:30. She really needed to hurry. Grabbing her house keys from her nightstand and stuffing her phone into her purse, she headed downstairs without saying goodbye to her siblings. Despite this, they were right on her heels, trying to catch the train with her.
They all made it on time of course. Exhausted and sticky from the July heat, they each took a seat on the empty train.
This was a daily occurrence to them ever since Toshiaki went to middle school. Getting closer to the school, the train filled up causing them to have to give up their seats. Reaching their stop, they still had five blocks to walk.
This was usually when the three split up into their own friend groups. Toshiaki went with his friends from the baseball team and Yuuka went with her friends from the choir club. Ayano however usually walked with Kiyoko.
Sure the boys following her was a bit obnoxious, but she was glad that the seniors didn't hit on her when she was walking with Kiyoko.
The walk was usually silent except for a greeting or two. Ayano and Kiyoko were different that way. Ayano could talk to anyone, while Kiyoko preferred the quiet. "You guys have the prelims soon right? Is that what you call them?" "Yep, if we make it we have to go against some powerhouse schools." "I know you guys will do great." Ayano gives Kiyoko a smile as they enter the school.
Ayano waves as they get separated into their different hallways. Spotting her friends, Ayano pulled them both into a hug by their lockers. "Any reason why today is different from any other day?" Kazuo, the older twin, asks.
His usually ear length black hair was cut short today. "I like the new haircut, Kazuo. "At least someone appreciates it," he says over exaggerating the someone in his sentence.
"Hey it's not my fault I don't think you'll pull girls with that cut," Saori replies. Saori's usual pink pigtails were nowhere to be found and an elegant ponytail replaced them.
"I wouldn't be talking if my roots were growing out," Ayano teased. Kazuo tried to hide his laughter which earned him a slap from Saori. The three headed up the stairs to the second year hallway.
Nishinoya spots Kazuo instantly and they do their handshake. Tanaka isn't far behind joining in with them.
Kazuo gives a small wave as he joins the boys to wherever they spent their time before class. Saori laughed a bit, "He really likes them doesn't he?" "You sound like his mom. C'mon we're going to be late."
Saori and Ayano were in class 2-4 while the boys were in class 2-3. They sat near the window where they could easily pass notes back and forth.
Saori sat in front of her in the third seat, and Ayano in the fourth. Today however, the desks were pushed together into groups of four implying group work was happening.
Miyu Kimura and Kazuki Okazaki were already seated and sharing snacks with each other. Ayano sat next to Kimura and Saori sat next to Okazaki.
Saori knew Ayano was unaware of her growing crush on Kimura and Okazaki and she wanted to keep it that way. Kimura's long blonde curls were always tied up in a bun and Okazaki's dark blue hair was long overdue for a haircut. Today he had his hair pulled back in a bun with fly away strands here and there.
Ayano started chatting away from club activities to meeting Tanaka later. Saori didn't understand why it was so easy for her to talk about anything with people.
A part of her was jealous and a part of her admired her. Their homeroom teacher walked in, signaling the beginning of class.
After attendance was taken, they began with math. The group work in math required poster boards to be made which put Ayano and Okazaki in charge of design.
Ayano and Saori switched seats so Saori and Kimura sat next to each other to work on the math problems.
"Thanks again for helping with the posters, Shimizu," Okazaki gave Ayano a smile. "It's no problem really. You can call me by my first name Okazaki. You know what would be fun? If we all dyed our hair together. Me, you, Saori, and Kimura." "This Saturday?" "If I leave practice early."
Saori hummed as she did the problems Kimura assigned her to do. She couldn't help but admire Kimura's neat handwriting and the little doodles she did on the side. Catching herself staring, she adjusted her glasses and continued writing. "Hey Saori, your coming right?" Kimura asked her. Okazaki and Ayano looked at her with excitement.
"Going where exactly?" "To dye our hair Saturday. I just did mine so I'll help you guys," Ayano replied barely containing her excitement. "Yeah who's house we going to?" "Mine since no one will be home. We can order food and stuff," Okazaki interrupts, pushing Ayano out the way. Saori couldn't say no to their smiling faces and gave in.
They verbally cheered and went back to designing the poster board.
"Heya Tanaka." Ayano sat next to Tanaka at the lunch table outside. "Heya Ayano. I can't wait for you to see me at practice." Saori sat across from the two with Okazaki on her right and Kimura on her left. "I can't wait either. Wanna hang out Sunday?" Tanaka nods eagerly," Where to?" "The arcade of course! I heard it's cheaper on Sunday." Nishinoya and Kazuo sat next to Tanaka with their lunch.
"Hey guys what're you talking about?" Nishinoya asks. "Just two lovebirds," Kimura replied nodding towards Ayano and Tanaka. "Hey we are not lovebirds, just two friends talking," Ayano argued. Saori gave her a look indicating she knew about her feelings for Tanaka.
"Well guess who I saw guys? Kiyoko! And she had a purple strand in her hair!" "Really? I bet she looks sooo pretty."
Hearing Tanaka talk about how pretty he found Kiyoko was a daily occurrence. It annoyed Ayano, considering her and Kiyoko had similar features. Today made her even angrier because her hair was already a purple ombre and Kiyoko just had a purple strand. Is she really that pretty? Ayano asked herself.
She stayed silent for the remainder of lunch, not wanting to contribute in the conversation anymore. She didn't hate Kiyoko, she just wished people didn't choose Kiyoko over herself.

"Did you see that Ayano?" Ayano nodded, "That spike was soo cool. I know you'll do great in your game!" Kiyoko tried to hide her smile, "You guys make quite the cute couple. Where's Saori and her brother?" Ayano shrugged, "Probably at home arguing over who ate all the cereal." Ayano grabbed her backpack as their coach blew the whistle, signaling the end of practice.
Ayano stayed behind to help Kiyoko lock up. This resulted in her hearing Nishinoya and Tanaka drone on and on about how they were going to protect her at night.
Toshiaki came to save her however, since he was coming from baseball practice. "Hey Tanaka, hey Noya, what're you guys up to?" "Nothing much, just protecting our queen Kiyoko," Nishinoya responded with a proud smile.
Tanaka nodded in agreement. Toshiaki was well aware of Ayano's growing feelings for Tanaka and a part of him felt bad. He knew what it was like to be the second choice, and he didn't want his older sister having a similar experience.
"You guys want to walk home together?" Toshiaki decided on asking the other four, thinking it would result in a fun conversation. They agreed and headed towards Kiyoko's house first, considering it was the closet.
The five of them talked about their weekend plans and the upcoming games they all had. Toshiaki had a baseball game on Saturday so he would spend his time after lunch on the bus to Tokyo.
Tanaka and Nishinoya had the preliminaries next week, and Ayano had a swim meet Sunday before going to the arcade. She wasn't too overhyped for it, but she was pretty excited. If they won, they would get to go to nationals automatically.
Well that was if they got first place. If they didn't, second to ninth place have to compete in another preliminaries that was even bigger than the one they were going to. Ayano wasn't worried however, considering she currently held the record in their prefecture for having the fastest butterfly. Their team was even considered one of the top five youth teams in Japan.
After saying their goodbyes to Kiyoko, the others headed towards the train station. Nishinoya's house was right across the street from it so it would just be Ayano, Tanaka, and Toshiaki on the train. Ayano swiped her student id to get to the subway before entering and taking a seat. It was pretty empty except for other students who also appeared to be in sports.
"So are both of you coming to the game next week? You can ride on the bus with us." Toshiaki shrugged, "I'm not sure if I can miss Monday practice though. If there's anything Tuesday I can make it."
"And what about you Ayano?" "Yeah I'll ride with you guys if you want me to. Is it cool if I bring Saori and Kazuo?" "Sure if there's room on the bus." Tanaka waved as he exited the train, leaving Ayano and Toshiaki to head home together.
"You think Yuuka is home?" Toshiaki pointed in the driveway, "If Mom and Dad are home then Yuuka definitely is. Choir is over like an entire hour before sports are."
Before either of them could unlock the door, Yuuka opened it. "What took you guys so long?" Ayano shrugged and let Toshiaki answer, "Maybe because baseball is time consuming. Your totally coming to my game tomorrow right?"
"I don't know should I support my little brother?" She pulled both of them into a hug and shut the door behind them. "I'll be there. Such a shame Ayano can't go though." "I'm glad you have something to do on Sunday. I don't need your encouragement."
Toshiaki pried himself out of Yuuka's arms, "What do you mean? Her encouragements the best." "You don't exactly yell Go Ayano! at a swim meet." "I understand your point, but your foods getting cold," Yuuka pointed into the kitchen. Their parents were already cleaning up which meant they had taken way too long.
Ayano sat down and rushed to finish her food. She still had to do her homework and exams to study for.
Next week was exam week and the last week before summer break. She wanted to at least pass so she wouldn't be grounded. Ayano quickly changed into a sports bra and sweats and sat cross legged in her chair.
Friday and Saturday were when exams were held, and club activities were cancelled next week. Ayano checked her calendar and made sure to add in the change of events. She was excited for summer since she would have more time to see her friends and maybe ask Tanaka on a date.
Sighing, she put in her noise cancelling headphones and began her homework.

Saturday July 26th
"Great job, Ayano! Your time increased by 1.5 seconds." The girls swim team captain, Yuki Saito, congratulated her as she got out of the pool. "Thanks, but it's nothing too special. I've been trying to study more." "Studying is way more important. Remember we don't have to get first place." "I'm mainly worried about the relay. See you tomorrow, Yuki."
Ayano left Yuki and the others to lock up and headed towards Okazaki's house. She hoped she hadn't taken too long. Seeing as it was only six pm, she hurried to his house.
It was only a five minute walk and she stopped to get some snacks on the way. As soon as she knocked, Kimura answered the door with dripping wet hair. She ushered Ayano inside to the upstairs bathroom where Okazaki was desperately trying to do Saori's roots.
"Hey guys. Can I put the food in your room?" Okazaki nodded not taking his eyes off her head. Kimura stayed in the bathroom with the two and Ayano headed to his bedroom.
Having been to his house multiple times, she easily found his bedroom. He had even more band posters on the left side of his wall near his bed. Next to his bed was a shelf full of albums and below it was a mirror. On the right side, he had his desk and an ungodly amount of plants.
Ayano set her swim bag and backpack where everyone had set their stuff and set the food down on his desk. She joined the others in the bathroom were they were currently trying to dry Kimura's hair. Ayano chose to film the whole scenario and post it on her story.
After Kimura's hair was dry, she went back into the bedroom to pick a movie. "If we dry your hair faster, it will probably be a pastel pink instead of just pink," Ayano suggested.
"Are you sure that will work?" Okazaki looked skeptical. "It'll be some shade of pink and that's good enough for me. I just want to watch the movie." The other two shrugged and began drying her hair. "I have an idea, let me find some scissors." Saori ran off downstairs, her footsteps could be heard throughout the entire house.
Coming back out of breath, she handed the scissors to Ayano, "Put Okazaki's hair in a ponytail, but a really like small one. Then we can cut off the remaining hair. Or maybe put it in a bun." "Wouldn't it be uneven?" Okazaki questioned her.
Saori shook her head, "I can shape it up, I think. I watched my dad cut people's hair before." Ayano hesitantly took the scissors and removed the hair tie from her hair and tied up Okazaki's into a half bun half ponytail.
Saori gave her a thumbs up and Ayano began cutting. Once she was finished, she handed the scissors to Saori who began to shape it up. Ayano joined Kimura in the bedroom who surprisingly didn't have her hair in a bun. Ayano sat next to her and grabbed a bag of chips from the bag.
"What movie did you have in mind," Ayano asked the younger girl. "I don't know maybe a horror movie or something? I am pretty tired." "I guess everyones like that since we've been busting our ass over exams. It'll be over soon though and then-" Saori cut her off when she entered the room, "Summer break here we come! Introducing the new and improved, Kazuki Okazaki!" Saori sat down and Okazaki entered behind her striking poses.
His hair was no longer past his shoulder, but barely reached his shoulder. While he turned around, Ayano noticed his bangs hadn't been trimmed, but the back of his hair had. "And what do we call this style again?" Kimura asked, clearly not liking it. "Its called a wolf cut. Usually girls get it, but I tried it on Okazaki." "Yeah Kimura a wolf cut. Doesn't it look nice?" "I think you look like a werewolf." Okazaki threw a pillow at Kimura to muffle her voice.
"Ayano what do you think of it?" "It's unique I guess. You'll get every wolf in school for sure." "Alright I see you guys don't like it, but to me it looks great. Now what movie are we watching?" Saori joined Okazaki on his bed and grabbed one of his blankets. She laid on her tummy far away from him. "This escape room movie. It's about an escape room, but deadly." "Ooh I am so scared Saori. What's going to happen? We can't unlock the door?" Okazaki teased.
"This actually looks pretty scary," Kimura pointed out looking at the trailer. So the four of them agreed to watch the movie. They were all fast asleep before it could end however, and all you heard were the snores of four teenagers full of serotonin with colored hair.

Sunday July 27th
"Ayano you can't be late for your date." "Saori my swim meet literally ended five minutes ago and how did you get back here?" "Well Tanaka was asking for you. Plus, your captain let me in. Now put your clothes on and go talk to your boyfriend."
"We're not dating, Saori." "Yet." "I'll see you in like five minutes." Saori nods and leaves. Ayano looks through the pile of bags to find hers and slips off to the restroom to change. She changed grey crop top and black shorts. Her favorite grey and white jacket complimented the look as she laced her sneakers and put her swim suit in a plastic bag before putting it in her swim bag.
Waving to her team, she set out to find her friends. Saori, Tanaka, Kazuo, and Toshiaki were waiting for her in front of the main doors. "Hey Ms. Nationals," Toshiaki teased as Ayano came up to them. "I'm just glad we even placed," Ayano replied slinging her bag over her shoulder.
"Of course you placed. You guys are the best in the whole prefecture," Tanaka said. Ayano felt her heart skip a beat at his compliment as the four of them headed to the train station

The others got off at the stop closest to Ayano's house, but Ayano and Tanaka remained on the train. "I'm glad you agreed to go with me," Ayano told Tanaka as she grabbed his hand. "Why wouldn't I go with you? Arcades are super fun."
Tanaka took Ayano's hand into his as they exited the train. They stopped at a convenience store right outside the train station before heading to the arcade.
Tanaka insisted they get slushies since they were cheap at this particular store. Ayano had no room to argue since he was paying for hers as well.
Since it was Sunday, the arcade was pretty crowded. Tanaka kept Ayano close to him as he maneuvered through the crowd to purchase a game card.
"Hey Tanaka let's do that first." Tanaka turned to look at what Ayano was so excited about and it was a mario kart game.
"Totally, how many credits should I put on the card?" "Maybe 80, but c'mon before someone gets to the game first." Ayano grabbed Tanaka's arm and dragged him over to the game.
She excitedly swiped the card for the game and sat down. Tanaka sat beside her and swiped the card next. After selecting their cars, the game began.
Tanaka was surprised at how good Ayano was at the game. He hadn't taken the game seriously, but now he had to. He watched in horror as Ayano sped past him and reached the finish line first.
"Wow Tanaka. Who would've thought I'm better than you at mario kart." "I demand a rematch. There's no way you beat me." Ayano shrugged but agreed and swiped the card again.
This time, Tanaka paid more attention to the game and even managed to drive Ayano off the road. Passing the finish line, he got out of the chair, "See I am better at mario kart. Who's the loser now?"
"Tanaka your scaring the kids." Tanaka turned around to see two kids waiting behind him to get onto the game. He apologized and followed Ayano to a booth.
"Wanna do basketball next? I'll totally beat you in that too." Ayano gave him a mischievous smile, "You think your going to win? Alright let's play." Ayano followed Tanaka to the back of the arcade where the basketball game was.
Swiping the card, Tanaka selected the two player option. Ayano and Tanaka both attempted to throw the balls in the moving basket. In the end, both of them ended up with zero points.
"Told ya you wouldn't beat me." "You didn't even score so it doesn't count," Tanaka replied heading towards the skeet ball machine. "But you didn't score either." Tanaka swipes the card and is determined to beat Ayano.
Successfully, he managed to throw the ball into the highest scoring hole earning him nearly twice as many tickets as the racing game. "Hey no fair you totally cheated." "Looks like someone's just a sore loser," Tanaka teased.
"Am not, you can't use your volleyball skills in an arcade game." He sticks his tongue out in a teasing way, "I'm just the best wing spiker in the history of wing spikers."
"Hey wanna see if we have enough tickets for a toy?" Ayano asked tugging Tanaka's arm towards the little gift store. He let Ayano lead him to the store where an enthusiastic worker smiled widely at them.
"How about we get water guns?" Tanaka asked pointing to the matching blue and red water guns hanging up on the wall behind the counter. Ayano shrugged, "If we can't afford it, how about matching kirby plushies?"
Tanaka walked up to the woman at the register. Her blonde ponytail swung as she spoke, "What can I help you with today?"
"I wanna know how much those guns cost." Her ponytail swung aggressively as she turned around. "About 5,000 tickets." Tanaka sighed, "And what about the two kirby plushies?"
"Together they're about 3,000." "C'mon Tanaka we only have like 4'000 tickets. Plus, we can buy water guns for like five dollars at the convenience store."
"Fine, I'll take the two kirby plushies." The cashier rang him up as he spent the remaining tickets on various candy. An elated Ayano happily took her prize from the cashier.
Tanaka couldn't be annoyed when Ayano was happy. He thanked the cashier and took her hand in his. They half skipped half walked back to the train station.
"Thank you for all the fun I had today, Tanaka." Tanaka swiped his student id after Ayano, "I had a lot of fun too. Your still coming to my game tomorrow, right?"
Ayano shrugs, "Guess we'll have to wait and see." They both entered the train and took the nearest seats. Ayano hoped her mother wasn't too upset that she was coming back so late.
The train ride lasted fifteen minutes and Tanaka made sure to walk Ayano right up to her doorstep. "The bus leaves at 4 if your coming."
Tanaka planted a quick kiss on the top of Ayano's forehead. Ayano struggled to speak as her face slowly became the same shade as a ripe tomato, "Goodnight Tanaka."
"And don't forget to bring your friends," Tanaka called waving as he headed for his own house. The male tried to hide his very obvious blush as he walked home.
He was surprised Ayano was even going to his game. His phone lit up signaling he got a text. Wonder who it could be, he thought to himself.

Monday July 28th
Ayano payed close attention to the clock, waiting for it to strike three thirty. "Ayano at least try to hide the fact your excited." Ayano glanced up from her notebook to see Saori looking back at her.
"Sorry, just can't wait. Plus summer break is literally next week." Saori turned around fully in her chair, "We should totally go to this new roller rink in Tokyo the day after exams. I heard a lot of second years are going."
"So it'll be like a hangout? Could we invite Okazaki and Kimura then?" Saori shrugs, "If they want to come." "Miss. Saito please face the front."
Saori sighed then turned back around in her chair. Ayano checked the clock again. Thirty seconds until school was over for the day. She closed her notebook and slowly slid her pencils back into her pencil case.
"Alright class, remember exams are Friday and Saturday." Ayano quickly gathered her things and raced towards the gym. Saori ran after her, not bothering to say goodbye to Kimura and Okazaki first.
"Ayano, you know I'm not fit for all this running." "Shh Saori. They'll hear you." Saori followed Ayano inside the gym where a few of the third years were already gathered.
"Hey Ayano! Nice to see you could make it. Who's this?" "This is my best friend, Saori Saito. And Saori, this is the captain Daichi Sawamura."
Daichi extended his hand towards Saori. While they chatted, Ayano glanced around the gym. She didn't remember the other third years names since Tanaka never really introduced them to her.
"Well Tanaka isn't here yet. The bus leaves in about ten minutes though so your welcome to get on." "We should find your brother since he wanted to tag along." "He's probably at the baseball field. I'll go get him."
Ayano nods and sits in the bleachers. She was hoping she would be able to ask Tanaka on another date considering the last one went so well. Did this count as a date? She wasn't sure, but she hoped it did.
A tall blonde followed by a shorter boy with freckles were the next to come in the gym. They introduced themselves as Yamaguchi and Tsukishima before leaving for the bus.
Nishinoya, Tanaka, and Kazuo were right behind them followed by an annoyed Saori. "Ayano I found my old jersey so you could wear it to the game today."
Ayano took the jersey and wore it right over her shirt. She gave the others a twirl before sitting back down. "Has anyone seen Kageyama and Hinata?" Daichi asked the others. "I saw them on the bus on the way over here," Nishinoya replied.
Daichi nodded and grabbed his bag, "Coach said he would be on the bus." The other two third years followed Daichi and the five of you trailed after them. Ayano assumed Kiyoko and Yachi were already on the bus.
Ayano sat in the back with Saori since Saori didn't want to sit next to Kazuo. "How long is this game going to be exactly?" Ayano shrugged, "Probably a few hours. I looked up the place and they have this shopping plaza down the street."
"I don't want to watch musty boys run around for hours ya know." "Who knows maybe you'll find someone." Saori waved Ayano off, "Doubt it since I already found people I'm interested in."
