Kitty Song Covey - Tumblr Posts
Okay now that xo, kitty came out bring in the fanfics

i’ve been getting a little fixated on xo kitty so for a small fandom, here are my opinions and such :3

- i don’t like minho that much and, frankly, i’m not sure why so many people do. he has his good moments but i don’t find him all that endearing. certainly not the best character in the show.
~~ the only thing i really like about minho is the fact that he’s a somewhat feminine guy that’s never made fun of for being feminine. he does stereotypically feminine things: he cares deeply about skincare, being well-groomed, fashion, and being romantic. unlike many other shows and movies, minho is never made the butt of a joke for being, pretty much, the most feminine guy in the show. not only that, his sexuality as a straight guy is never called into question, which is something that often happens with feminine men. i do like that.
- i actually really like madison! i don’t find her all that annoying. a lot of people cited her as really exemplifying the “koreaboo-ish” nature of the show but i actually don’t mind her at all.
~~ i think a lot of people only hate madison because she’s “cringe.” in reality, she’s a cool character who fulfills her purpose well. plus, if we’re talking about her as if she were a person, she’s actually just really nice. at the end of the first season, she’s essentially kitty’s only friend. she never acts as if she’s forced to be kitty’s friend- in fact, when kitty pleads her case, she cheers and claps for her. madison could’ve easily spent her time with eunice and mihee and whoever else, but she chose to support kitty instead. she’s also very communicative with minho. she makes it clear that she’s more interested in hooking up than being in a romantic relationship and lets him down gently. she never “played” him, she just thought they were on the same page. in short, madison is absolutely goated and people just hate her because she’s kinda cringe sometimes.
- i don’t really care about the use of k-pop in the show. it doesn’t bother me and never has. k-pop is a special interest of mine so i am a k-pop fan, but i never felt very pandered to by the show.
~~ i think the show being set in a korean boarding school is a big part of the marketing. k-pop fans are quite the large demographic and for the show to appeal to us is a viable strategy to make it successful. that being said, i’m very neutral about the fact that k-pop is used really prominently throughout. i think it’s actually kinda nice. i enjoy recognizing songs i like in a show i also like. it’s as simple as that. i think there’s something to be said about the fact that the show’s setting is very appealing to me. i love the concept of students of different backgrounds attending this international school while struggling with love, sexuality, culture, and heritage. something about it is incredibly appealing to me. i absolutely love the show despite its flaws.
those are some of my xo kitty opinions :3 i have more so perchance i’ll start posting about this show more since i really like it
I want to love XO, Kitty SO BAD but netflix's track record with shows that have queer characters of colour (especially sapphic and definitely especially non-lesbian sapphic) is EXCEPTIONALLY terrible. I'm literally already mad abt a cancellation that hasn't happened bc I don't trust netflix execs
i just think that it would be funny if in season 2, yuri's mom just kicked all three of the guys out of KISS instead of letting Kitty back.
part of the watchability of xo kitty comes from the fact that it's dumb, super cliched and borderline bad, but it switches up enough so that it makes everything decent to watch.
like, no one is a flamboyant stereotype; it's (as far as we know) straight boy minho who's obsessed with skincare and clothes, not Q the athletic scholarship boy. yuri is a feminine lesbian and so is Juliana. kitty being bi and not having a cheating storyline is honestly the most shocking part of this.
and the story ends with two potential love interests and doesn't go the 'bisexuals must end up with a girl to be bi' route, although i predict many fans will if kitty ends up with minho. and many people will also complain about 'straightbaiting' if kitty ends up with yuri, but i digress.
i can't believe that jenny han managed to hype me up more for the plot threads over the ships.
i talked about this in the tags of a different post, but i can't get over how xo kitty literally created one of the messiest plots possible for the three guys who aren't even really the focus. i spent most of my time biting my fingernails over small kernels of potential conflict with these losers more than the fucking pregnancy storyline and kitty's mum's first love. like they drew me in with the utter craziness that i kind of wish kitty's storyline had. dae, q and minho are bonkers in a fun way; kitty's storyline is bonkers in a boring, unsatisfying way.
i mean, think about it.
there's three roommates here: dae, minho and q. and ALL of them have such a messy relationship that is on the precipice of absolute disaster
q and dae: dae is poor; he clearly can't afford to go back to school without his scholarship. if he finds out that q knew about the cheating that florian did in order to stay in school and how that messed him up, he's definitely going to tell on florian and potentially get him expelled. dae might even break the friendship, since what kind of friend dooms you for their boyfriend of a couple of months? q is basically sitting on information that damns two people and he has to pick which person he's going to damn: his friend or his boyfriend.
dae and minho: most of the messiness of minho and dae comes from the fact that minho likes kitty and so does dae. the idea that minho and kitty might have been in love and screwing him over led him to pick a fight with the guy. in minho's case, he's kind of resentful that kitty was with him, and he didn't get his chance. dae let him go only after kitty swore that she wasn't into him, and it seems like he assumed that minho also wasn't into her. how is dae going to react when he finds out that minho confessed to his ex-girlfriend five minutes after their breakup? this relationship is probably the one that'll be exploited in the next season, and it's going to so bad in the worst way.
q and minho: this isn't really as messed up as the other two, but it's definitely messed up because of the other two. q is basically sitting on information that damns Dae, and minho definitely values his friendship with dae; he literally antagonizes kitty because he values and prioritizes dae over her. he's definitely going to take it well if q sits on something like this. if he finds out what happens with q, he's probably not going keep his secret. on q's side, minho is fucking up their friendship by professing his love for kitty, which could exacerbate q's guilt for sitting on that information. i could 100% see q picking dae's side in the inevitable fallout between dae and minho because of his guilt over dae
