CLOUDY NIGHTS PART ONE

The sun is setting as two people sat in their living room looking over a book filled with names. The woman leaned over to look at it in the man's hands though it was difficult as she was currently 5 months pregnant.

"Oh! What about Ah Lam! It means daisy." The woman said pointing at the name on the page.

" Hm, but wouldn't it be better if our daughter had a more unique name?" The man asked his pure white eyes glancing towards her.

She took the book from his hands, her face scrunching in concentration as she read down the list of names. The man stared at her face in adoration—he truly loved the faces she made, he found them rather adorable.

"How about Luli?"

"I don't think it would fit."

"Lula?

"Mn... no"

"Nayao?"

"Hm, maybe."

"What about Yún? It means cloud, she can be our little cloud baby!" She raised her head from the book with a smile on her face.

The man smiled at her and reached for her stomach and rested his hand on it.

"It's perfect."

~~

The grass crunched under her feet as she ran and stopped to hide behind a tree, she pressed her hand to her mouth to stop her heavy breathing from getting her found.

She pressed herself further into the trunk trying to make herself as unnoticeable as possible as the crunching of grass continued.

She peaked her head out from the tree when the sound stopped to try and see where the person was.

She was so busy with this that she didn't notice the silhouette behind her.

The figure crept closer, only revealing its position, when it stepped on a branch and broke it causing a loud crack to sound throughout the forest.

She whipped around as the figure lunged to grab her.

She struggled as hard as she could, but it did nothing. The figure was too strong.

She shrieked in an effort to get help, but it was futile as they were too far into the woods for anyone to hear her.

She continued to yell for help as the figure positioned its hands on her sides, a smirk on its face.

Suddenly she bellowed with laughter as the figure moved its fingers around her sides tickling her.

She tried to grab at the hands and pull them off as the laughter was starting to hurt.

"P-Papa-" she interrupted herself with a giggle "Stop-" she laughed again.

The man didn't let up tickling her mercilessly until her throat was getting hoarse.

When he finally stopped, she tried to catch her breath.

When she finally caught her breath, she huffed out a breath and pouted, "Papaaa," she wined "you're such a meanie." She said punctuating it with a glare with no actual anger in it.

The man chuckled and smiled looking at her with adoration, "I'm sorry my little cloud but I just love hearing you laugh."

"Wha-," she stuttered, "Well you could've just told me a joke! I would've laughed then! Even if your jokes are really bad..." she muttered.

The man chuckled and moved to stand up and brushed of any dirt or grass from his pants.

When he finished, he put his hand out towards her for her to grab, "We should head home before your mother comes looking for us."

She reached for it and stood with the help of her father though she stumbled slightly.

Once she was finally balanced, she ran towards the direction they had entered the forest with her father hand and hand.

When he noticed she was getting tired he took his hand from her vice grip and sped up and charged like a bull grabbing her at the last second and set her down on his shoulders.

She giggled excitedly as he ran with his hands on her legs to keep her steady.

As they neared the small cabin, he set her down on the ground and grabbed her hand leading her inside.

He held the door open for her as she ran toward the woman chopping vegetables in the kitchen.

“Mama, tell Papa to stop being a meanie!” she yelled as she hugged her mother.

The woman just chuckled as the man came up from behind and laid his head on her shoulder.

The woman turned her head to see him and rested a hand on his cheek.

She put a chaste kiss on his cheek and turned back to her vegetables and hummed a small sound of acknowledgement.

The girl who had watched this interaction was utterly disgusted at this display of affection and made it known by covering her mouth and pretending to puke.

Her mother chuckled at this and moved to crouch in front of the child, “it’s not that bad dear,” she said softly and poked her daughter’s nose, “you’ll fall in love too someday.”

The woman brought her daughter’s face close and put a soft kiss on her forehead.

The girl's face quickly pulled into one of disgust as she thought of herself acting all lovey Dovey with someone when she got older.

“Naw I’m gonna be an adventurer when I get older!” She said confidently as she put her hands on her hips. “Then I’m never gonna have to do all the gross stuff you and Papa do!”

The woman chuckled as she stood patting nonexistent dirt from her apron, “I never said you had to.”

The girl looked at her questioningly, “what do you mean?”

“You don’t have to act like me and your father to be in love Dear,” she spoke softly, “love comes in all shapes and forms darling.”

The girl looked to be considering the possibility of something existing that she didn’t know about.

“I don’t get it.”

The woman giggled lightly, “You don’t have to get it right now. You have plenty of time to figure it out.”

A cough came from behind her, and she turned around to see her husband motioning towards the overflowing pot of broth that had started leaking.

She yelped and rushed towards it to put out the fire stove and clean off the outside of the pot.

Once she was done, she took the lid off and checked inside only to find that all that was left of the broth was a significantly less amount than there had been before.

She put her head in her hands and groaned before turning to her husband and shouting "this is why I don't cook!"

Her husband just laughed as their daughter tried to grab some of the chopped vegetables.

~~

The grass crunched under her feet as she ran with her child in her arms.

Choked sobs rang throughout the forest disturbing the forest animals and leading the heavenly guards to them.

She didn't care. She had a child to protect.

She tried to stop her cries, but they had only shifted into hiccups and sniffles.

She ran faster and her wings spread out behind her narrowly avoiding branches of the trees that were nothing more than a blur to her in her focus to survive.

In an instant, she took to the sky though she lay low near the trees, so she wasn't as easy to spot.

She shifted her child closer to her chest—she had started crying when the chase first started but at some point, she had passed out.

She couldn't fathom why they were chasing her, last she checked she checked she had done all the duties she needed to.

Could it have been that she was married to a cheif? No, that couldn't be it, they had been fine when they first got married. Why would they hunt her down now?

She felt the body in her arms squirm; she looked down spotting her daughter peak her head out of her chest.

She shifted her little one to where she could see all the trees they were flying over.

Suddenly she saw something in her peripheral.

She turned to see what it was and her eyes widened.

She curled around her child as the arrows pierced through her wing's causing a majority of it to rip off.

As she plummeted to the ground she saw one of them throw their sword at just the right angle that it was going to pierce right through her and her child.

As she fell faster and the sword got closer she pushed her child from her arm at just the right time to prevent her from being impaled though it still ended up hitting her arm.

As she fell a sword in her chest she smiled softly, a single tear rolled down her cheek and a hoarse "I love you." slipped out.

~~

As he walked towards the temple with his daughters body in his arms he only regretted one thing. that his family had to get dragged into this

It would have been fine if they had just left them alone.

But they didn't, And now he's dealing with the consequences.

He stopped in front of the entrance and cradled her lifeless body to his chest as he fell to his knees.

He sobbed into her hair and grieved for the life she was supposed to live.

He sobbed and shuddered and sniffled for a while as he sat there.

Grieving.

It's such a weird process isn't it?

Letting go.

He doesn't think he can allow himself to do that. Not after everything was his fault to begin with.

Only once he had stopped crying left only with his puffy eyes and a cold body in his arms did he walk through the door. The feeling of the magic protecting this place overcoming him and his senses for only a second.

He walked forward even as the woman who could freeze even a god in his place with her glare stared him down.

He kneeled softly laying his daughters lifeless body on the ground, "My Lady."

The woman continued to stare him down though he knew he had to wait for her permission to continue speaking.

That permission came only a second later as her stare let up and she waved for him to continue.

"Please, if you would," he swallowed the saliva that was quickly settling into his throat, "save my daughter. I will do anything.”

The woman hummed noncommittally seeming to think his request over.

“Anything?” She inquired.

“Anything.”

She made a noise of satisfaction, “I’m not nearly powerful enough at the moment to bring her back,” she looked to the side in contemplation, “but, I could keep her body from decomposing if you’d like? Of course once I’m strong enough I’ll bring her back, good as new.”

The man gained a slight bit of hope in his eyes and nodded, “thank you my Lady,” he bowed his head and brought a hand to his chest.

The woman smirked.

~~

A thousand years later and here he was again. Staring at the body of a girl far too young for what had happened to her.

She was finally going to come back to him.

He moved closer and disturbed the fog that had gathered around her tomb.

Of course it wasn’t actually fog but he didn’t know what else to call it.—logically he knows he shouldn’t disrespect his Lady’s magic like this but he had better things to worry about at the moment.

For a moment he just stood there and observed her like he had been since she died though, now he was doing it for a completely different reason.

He reached a hand out and laid it on top of the ice where her hand was.

He sighed and backed away from her, ready to start the the process that was thousands of years in the making.

He closed his eyes and focused on the fog floating mindlessly around the room—the only thing keeping his daughter in the state she was in—and tried to bring it to his hand.

Suddenly all of it came at him at once and he felt like he had been forced out of his body.

Suddenly his body moved fluidly towards the ice, a ball of magic surrounding its fist.

He watched passively from the eyes of the body that was no longer his—he knew what was happening though that didn't stop the panic that had stabbed through his heart.

The body stopped abruptly though the free hand hung loose like his body was nothing more than a meat puppet that had its string cut.

It slowly moved its hand to rest on a section of ice right above her chest before forcefully pushing its hand through the ice and into her chest.

He saw the magic in its hand slowly absorb into his daughter's chest and seep into the ice cracking it.

Once the magic had fully dissipated and the ice had broken, he finally got back control of his body.

Once he felt fully back in his body, he rushed towards his daughter and held her to his chest.

He buried his face into her hair and pressed his hand into the small of her back trying to have as much physical contact as possible to remind him that she was actually here with him—though very cold—and this wasn't a hallucination like the ones when he had had a particularly bad night.

He almost sobbed in relief when she shifted slightly, and her arms wrapped around his torso.

She was really back.

Bottom-Right: Liuer becomes visibly more nervous and replies, "I'm not sure you could top my first death; it was quite a theatrical one."
Top-Panels: The LBD starts laughing maniacally. Macaque can do nothing but look at her confused, nervous and bewildered.

Bottom-Left: The Bone Spirit responds in with fake sweetness, "Oh no,no. Killing you would be far too merciful..."

Bottom-Right: She continues, " For your repeated defiance, you'll have the privilege..."
All Panels: "...of joining Sun Wukong in his fate." The Lady Bone Demon finishes her sentence with manic glee. Macaque can do nothing but stare at her in horrified realization.
Wukong, still possessed, narrows his eyes ever so slightly, almost imperceptibly.
