Although she had spent seven years living in a castle amongst ghosts, when Mary thinks of ghosts now, she doesn’t think of those beings she had interacted with. No, to her, ghosts live in the shadows just outside her line of sight. She hears their creak on the stairs when nobody is home. She sees the curtains flutter when the windows are closed, and she knows it’s them. But never does she sense the ghosts more than when she closes her eyes, holds her breath, and feels the caress of Lily’s fingers, icy cold and barely present on her cheek.
