You didn't have another choice, honest! Have these people SEEN what the heroes are up against? It'd end you in an instant, whether that be a lovecraftian abomination with a hold on your soul, a rampaging monster that's destroying more than a hurricane and an earthquake could in one fell swoop, a shadow organization that has tabs on everyone you love and will end them in an instant, or just a particularly grumpy boss that might yell at you if you don't fall in with his excessively tyrannical methods, you can't go risking your neck for the poor saps that think they can stop it. No way, you're staying on the bad guy side, where it's SAFE.

Oli is not a big reader. Most of the books she reads are for a distinct purpose. Testing out a new propagation theory, learning a new recipe, something to do with her anthropogeological work or information about a region she's about to travel to. When she doesn't read to learn something, she tends toward mysteries or humorous fiction, or poetry. Maybe very occasionally a memoir if Ren has recommended it. Reading for pleasure isn't something which occurs to her very often, Oli's hobbies are much more active, (gardening, hiking, bird watching, going on long hallucinogenic trips in the woods, etc.) Although she does occasionally indulge reading for reading's sake. This is especially true in summer time when she can read outside under the shade of a tree, or a beach umbrella if they're on assignment on Costa del Cobra, Uncle Zan's island in the Cieldalaes. (Fun fact! That name comes from the plentiful schools of King Cobrafish that inhabit the Cieldalaes Margin. Not snakes c': )

What kind of surprises does Aymeric have in store for Hali on her special day? How do they celebrate the occasion together?

Now to answer your question! This year, Aymeric surprised Hali by decorating the Island Sanctuary for her Nameday, invited all of their friends to the island for a Nameday party, and then had a whole feast prepared for her Nameday dinner. It was really special because this was the first nameday that Hali got to celebrate with Aymeric properly as a couple. 🥰

Misunderstood Villain 

Prepare for an onslaught of both the most dehumanizing and hateful takes, and flood of thirst comments. You are chronically misunderstood; even whether or not you’re actually evil is debatable. You may be acting out for revenge, to defend someone you love, or even just to protect yourself. You’re a pretty jaded person - you don’t trust or even really like most people. Maybe you did at one point, but that part of you is gone, and you don’t go a single day without grieving it; you think a lot about what your life could have been. You’re stuck in the past. You’re angry and maybe you don’t even want to be, but this is the only way you can see to survive. You’re open, but less in a trusting way and more like a wound. You don’t like to let people see you, but the hurt spills out of you before you can stop it. You’re impulsive, even as you try hard to plan and prepare. Maybe someday your side of the story will finally be heard. Until then, you can convince yourself that being hated is safer anyway.

Well what do you know, a quiz that hit it on the head! Even the term ‘villain’ is debatable when it comes to Jak - she’s not any one thing, at the end of the day, but this little quiz kinda summarized her better than I think I could have, given how long winded I tend to get when I have to do that kind of thing! (And indeed she/I have faced our fair share of both hate and thirst comments since I came around in 2019, lol!) But I always like to think about how the person she’s become is nothing like the person she was - the person she had to give up, to be able to survive Garlemald. She does mourn that girl, but she’s never coming back - she’s as dead as the rest of the tribe. 

The only way forward is paved with the only things that makes sense: chaos and fury, because it is safer if you hate her.

11. Opinion on platonic ships?

I absolutely adore platonic ships and wished fandoms as a whole focused on platonic relationships way more than they do. I say that even when I myself haven’t shown Hali’s platonic relationships that often… oops. 😬

But no really, friends are just as important as lovers, and I love learning about an OCs’ platonic ships! Did you know one of Hali’s best friends is actually Emmanellain?? Yup, really!

37. Describe one reunion after time apart.

Oh if I actually fully described the whole thing I’d be rambling on forever, but one of the biggest ones so far is when Hali first sees Aymeric in Ala Mhigo after being apart for nearly a year by that point. The exact scene I’m talking about is this one HERE (link to the screenshots I took). Basically Hali almost faints because Aymeric is still referring to her as “snowdrop”, his pet name for her, and he’s so incredibly happy to see her, and Hali wasn’t expecting such a warm reunion.

There's also some Very Obscure AU stuff with Alexander being a bro re: a particular shard who punched her way to the Source but literally I am failing to think of any other situation where any of my ocs' ships are met with anything warmer than Exasperated Tolerance at Best (from the people around her, to be certain. I'm having a great time).

There's a bit of manufactured awkwardness from both Myth and Yloise in blorboverse since they're both dating Haurchefant - but it's not a rivalry so much as overthinking the entire situation when there's not really a problem at all (aside from the expectations and Pressures of Ishgardian culture, which has less of an influence at the Falling Snows at least). It's very much a "oh no, after you" sort of thing between the two of them while Haurchefant is like, planning picnics on a three-person tandem bicycle or something.

18. Has your OC ever had a prophecy made about them? Was it a big deal or did they ignore it? Was it straightforward or cryptic? Did it ever come to pass or did they circumvent it?

Well, no such thing as a 'prophecy', per se, but there are two things about Maha that are somewhat similar.

The first is that she believes she has been cursed by Nymeia. Blessed and cursed, actually. She is extraordinarily lucky at times, and then extremely unlucky at others. It makes her life pretty chaotic and she hates it, but at the same time, sometimes it's fun for her. With her taking as many risks as she does, she can't help but pay at least some lip-service to the goddess, and believes this has attracted her ire over the course of time.

The second is that Maha possesses the Echo. She doesn't know why or what it's fully capable of (as she doesn't have access to avenues of knowledge that the WoL does) but she takes it in stride as just another vehicle for divination. IIRC the Echo is different for everyone; for Maha, it allows her to peer into the future rather than the past, and the thing that triggers it the most is when a promise or declaration of duty is made and she's able to witness its outcome, to an extent.

you're so hot. sorry about the horrors. you're the kind of person people immediately notice. whether you have a distinct style, are more outgoing, or are just plain beautiful, you make an impression. people usually feel the need to protect you, which probably frustrates you to no end. you're not weak! you're not fragile! you're not helpless! but the people in your life tend to disagree. maybe it's your lover, the protagonist, trying to keep you out of their own turmoil. maybe it's someone responsible for you in some way, keeping you away from your lover, while they head down an increasingly dark path. regardless, all you really want is a sense of autonomy! unfortunately, you're very likely to die before that happens. the audience will be so caught up in the grief your death causes the protagonist that they forget to grieve you as a person. you deserved better, but unfortunately this is not your story. maybe it should have been.

It's not the first place they met, or the first place they fought, or where they fell in love.

It's the memory of their battle there that carries Alannah through the events of Shadowbringers, that brings Ardbert back from the brink of becoming a fading shade.

The name itself is fitting, because the embers of what happened there that day would eventually evolve into the spark of trust that leads them to bond, and become the flame that burns in them now.

ANIMAL: gaelicat. A curious, charming creature with a feline body and the wings of a bat. It possesses a keen, mischievous intelligence. Gaelicats are an important part of Vanu Vanu culture, with the Gundu using them in fortune telling rituals, releasing them into the Sea of Clouds to receive omens of the future. Their ancient predecessors, the ailouroi, were familiars created to keep watch and bring inspiration as muses.

COLOR: robin-egg blue. Often associated with lightning, water, and the sky, this vibrant shade of cyan is the color of Valoren’s soul.

SONG: Fake Out by Fall Out Boy. The perfect upbeat anthem for a man whose life has been one long, heartbreaking fake-out.

NUMBER: zero. The Fool in tarot is numbered as zero. Valoren also thinks of himself as a non-entity, with no true identity. His sister’s derogatory nickname for him growing up was Valoren Nothing, and it really stuck.

TIME OF DAY: very late night. In the darkest hour that comes before dawn, Valoren has always thrived. He’s practically nocturnal. Not only because that’s when his jobs as a tavern bard take place, but because he finds pace in being awake when almost nobody else is.

FLORA: nightshade. A beautiful purple flower whose scientific name is derived from the Greek mythological figure Atropos, the deadliest of the three Fates. Of course, the plant is infamously poisonous.

SMELL: lavender. Valoren has a custom perfume blend made of lavender, vanilla, and cardamom. He uses the same scent profile in his soaps. You can tell a letter is from Valoren not only because of his signature blue ink, but because it smells like lavender.

GEMSTONE: moonstone. A multi-hued stone that seems to shift depending on what light it's in, moonstones are also associated with tides and, obviously, the moon.

SEASON: autumn. While the weather is often dreary, it only makes for a better excuse to stay home and be cozy. The beautiful leaves also make for an excellent show!

PLACE: rooftops. Valoren often climbed up onto the roof as a child to escape his (less dextrous) older sister’s torment, and they’ve always been a place of solace for him.

FOOD: plum fool. One of the first things Valoren made, a plum fool is a dessert with layers of lightly cooked and sweetened plums and either rich custard or freshly whipped cream.

ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: the spire. It is associated with dominion over others, the noble class, and the element of lightning. Often, the Spire heralds a disaster or upheaval.

ELEMENT: lightning. As an astral element, lightning takes an active role in shaping the world around it, either in creation or destruction. It is the divine wrath of a storm, the spark of inspiration, the flash of brightness that’s alleged to never strike the same place twice.

BEVERAGE: top-shelf bourbon, neat. Valoren fails to see the point of drinks that aren’t either caffeinated or alcoholic. When he’s drinking on his own gil, he prefers a strong drink with complex flavors and just a hint of burning.

This is very insightful! I absolutely love the details you go into explaining Ren's custom archival system. Not only it shows her methodical thinking when it comes to organizational work, it also reveals an interesting side of her, with the final number being a display score. (I chuckled at that, actually!)

It’s a common perception that the way someone arranges their bookshelves can say a lot about their personality and traits. How would this be applied to Ren, a librarian/archivist in her own right? How would you describe her, based on the way she works or manages her library/archive? What are some of her quirks and gripes on the organization of books and materials? After all…

Thanks so much for the ask friend! Ren is super particular about how everything is organised tbh c': not just her books. She was raised by a meticulous perfectionist. That sort of overbearing demeanor of course influences a person. So as a result, she is the kind of person who judges people for things like bad dress sense, poor manners, tardiness, and forgetfulness, that extends to people's organisational skills, but truly, when it comes to organisation and memory, it is probably the only time when she's judging someone, she isn't being a hypocrite. Cyfrenne is very organised because it's the only method of control she has over her memory salads. She has a custom archival system which she's used for her own collection of notes, research materials, books and curios, since she was a student. This system is actually part of the reason why Zancefer asked her to manage his collection! She adapted it for use at the Slanted Shelves. The short explanation as to how this system works is that it's an alpha-numeric system preceded by a combination of bibliomantic sigils. These serve both as an aetheric signature one can attune to, sort of like a linkpearl frequency, and as a classifier for the item type. A longer breakdown is under the cut!

Ren's collection classification system, also the CARGO classification system works firstly on the basis of item type, followed by particulars in order of importance to her or her Uncle, these include obvious stuff, such as age and geographical origin, but there are also numeric values which indicate an items transportability, ease of public display, inherit value, and of course when it comes to some of the weird stuff Zancefer has picked up, estimated threat level c': Each item in a collection she manages is first inscribed with a bibliomantic sigil for recalling/locating it. For fun my husband and I headcanon this symbol is '#'. We also headcanon it functions similarly to the old Arcane Mark with permanence trick from D&D 3.0, where in you could put your personal sigil on an item and then make that sigil invisible but still be able to spot it even when no one else can. (This is of course, an anti-theft measure as much as for organisational purposes!) The next sigil is a letter designation which defines the item type. These are C, R, T, and, M. C stands for Curios, R for Relic, T for Tomestone and M for Manuscript. This is then followed by the numerical designations which tell Ren the item's particulars at a glance. These all work on a scale of 0-9. The first number indicates the items threat level, whereby 0 is undetermined and 9 is Sharlyan said keep that one under lock and key. (Full disclosure. They don't c': )

The second number designates the materials and composition, where 0 once again stands for indeterminate, 1 is rudimentary organic material composition and 9 is for items created using highly complex knowledge and materials (ie: tomestones) or naturally occurring materials of great power (ie: auracite)

The next number will tell Ren how old the item is. Again 0 is undetermined, 1 would be considered very ancient and 9 would be considered something created within the last 200 or so years of the star's history. In rare instances where an item has been altered significantly in an era after it was originally created, this is designated with a hyphen.

I think the idea of the scale is pretty obvious by now c': it works on the same 0-9 principle for the items value, its transportability and in the case of the Library, how easy/how worthwhile it is to keep it on display.

What you end up getting is something that looks like:

Sack of Accelerated Atrophy #R246413 This otherwise ordinary looking burlap sack has a green tie cord threaded about its mouth. Believed to have potentially been created during the time of Amdapor, anything placed in this sack is instantly covered in mould, rendering any food stored in it completely useless. Tests have shown that the sack is also able to corrupt foodstuffs stored within a small radius of itself, roughly 3 fulms by 3 fulms. It’s speculated this was used as an additional method of guerilla tactics by the Mhaci to deplete the resources of Amdapor Keep during their invasion.

So, this Sack is a Relic, It's not much of a threat, it's made with some pretty complex magical knowledge as well as organic materials, it's moderately valuable in terms of its historical worth, it's very easy to transport. And, well, sure they can display this burlap sack easily, but is there a point? Probs not, who wants to look at a sack? It gets a 3 for its display score c':

Manducated Femur#C229311 This femur bone looks as if it comes from a four-limbed creature such as a Jackal. It has been well cleaned and preserved, with a set of what appear to be humanoid bite marks stained with deep ochre dye adorning the length of the humerus. Located in the Sagoli Desert and assumed to be the creation of one of the local Zahar'ak Thaumaturges, if the bone is bitten once again it fills the air with the smell of a bubbling stew. The scent is strong enough to mask odours in a 90 fulm radius, however it also runs the risk of attracting nearby predators. Used as both a method for ambushes, by distracting lost or weary travelers, or the hunting of local game fauna.

Although, to be fair, this femur is technically not part of the Uncle Zan's collection anymore. It now lives in the crisper of The Fireside's icebox.

35. What things do you most want to see in someone’s OC? Or what do you always find the most interesting? Or stimulating, if you’re in that sort of mood?

I suppose I enjoy a good backstory and a bit of a character arc. Not that there's anything wrong with self-inserts and power fantasies, but I do quite like to get a sense of where an OC started and what factors influenced their development.

Equally I've no objection to fantastically lore-bending OCs, but I do like to get a sense of how their creator sees them fitting within the setting and interacting with existing concepts.

As for stimulating, I can't claim to be immune to attractive male OCs, but that's not a requirement for me to be interested and engaged with someone's character!

This was a super fun quiz to take! Although it turns out the blorbaes souls aren't compatible scents, I'd argue that candle smoke and fresh linen are a pretty compatible combination! (If they aren't how come fresh linen is one of those fancy candle fragrances?!) I actually do think it describes their personalities very accurately tho! A blog that people might not know about, but that I want to recommend. Hmmm hard to choose. But someone who I have been mutuals with for a very long time - and who I definitely recommend - is @confusedau-ra.

As well as the adventures of Clara Lara (the titular confused Au Ra herself), this blog also posts many inspiring aesthetic pictures, reblogged FFXIV art and does a great job of celebrating the screenshots and gposes of others. A blog that I think might fly under the radar for a lot of people, but a real joy to follow and one of my favourite mutuals!

2. A blog who I wish posted more often - at least on Tumblr, as I think they are more active on the site formerly known as Twitter - would definitely be @phoebe-of-ivalice.

An incredibly talented writer and gposer, I am always very excited to see a new post from them. And despite being such an accomplished creator, they have always been very kind and friendly in every interaction I've ever had with them. Whilst I can fully understand that it's hard to spread yourself over multiple platforms, I can only hope those Twitter-types appreciate how lucky they are to have @phoebe-of-ivalice so active on their site!
