So I wanted to reply to this post :)
I can`t find the date when it was published. But it was probably a long time ago... but whatever :D
I will make more posts in the future about this character since I think they should have used him more.... OR FINALLY USE HIM AGAIN. I AM TALKING TO YOU DC!!!

However, let`s start:
To the 1. question: Why does he exclusively speaks backwards? Who translates for him?
We never get to know why he only speaks backwards (but I will make a post someday with my theories on that.)
But the person who translates for him is Avia, daughter of Big Barda and Mister Miracle. His Girlfriend.

2. question: Who is Zatara`s (II) Father?
We don`t know why the father never was brought up in the comic. I think he wasn`t because it wasn`t important to the story? However, as far as I can remember the comic Zatanna also never was brought up. We only can tell from the name, he is her son.
BUT
It was revealed that John Constantine is in fact his father.
About John not being in the picture and Zatanna being a single parent: I think with other comic books it`s safe to assume that John is a good father. And he loves Zatanna so much. If he takes care of his child, which he had unwillingly with a demon I think it`s safe to assume that he would help Zatanna.
THIS IS A THEORY:
It was revealed that Zatanna is dead in the story. Which could be the reason why her son talks just backwards and goes by his mothers last name. (basically the same way like Zatanna uses her fathers backwards speech etc)

3. Question: WHY IS HE ZATARA II AND NOT III. DID ZACK DIE BEFORE HE COULD BE INDUCTED??? DID ZACK JUST NOT WANT TO BE IN THE JUSTICE LEAGUE???
Because Zatannas son is the original Zatara II. Zack DID NOT exists back then when the comic was released. The Kingdom/Kingdom come was released back in 1996. Zatannas cousin Zachary Zatara had his first appereance in 2006. And Zack is based on Zatannas son! (I will make a seperate post about this since I read some rumors that are pissing me off XD )
4. question: What is his name?
To be honest I once read it somewhere but I can`t find the source anymore. So if someone reads this who knows what I am talking about, please let me know: I once read that Zatara II was named after his grandfather. What would make perfect sense to me. Since Zatanna loved her father. That would mean that his name is Giovanni Zatara II.
About the thing with having his mother last name

Again there is no real answer for that but I can answer it generalized & based on the characters. A woman doesn`t have to take her husbands last name. They could`ve been married but she didn`t wanted to chance her surname. (I think that would also make sense for zatanna since she is attached to her father.) Another thing could be that John didn`t want his son to have his last name, since a lot of people don`t like him.

2. eventhough there is so little information out there. I really love his character and I wish he would appear again...
I hope I`ll find more people who like his character.
And I really hope that a certain show will show him at some point :/

so i read “the kingdom” and i found it not particularly engrossing. yet despite how zatara ii shows up in about three panels i have

MANY.
QUESTIONS.
why does he speak backwards exclusively? was he put under a curse?? is he just… a momma’s boy? but like… nobody seems really used to it except for that one person who translates for him (”if you talk backwards again i’m going to punch you”), so maybe it was a recent linguistic choice??? btw WHO TRANSLATES FOR ZATARA AND WHY?!?!?! (i want them to be best friends plz)
why is the father not brought up??? everyone likes to think it’s john constantine, and i also really like this theory because reasons. but honestly there’s no canon i can find that says outright “john constantine is the father.”
i feel like the character is deliberately ambiguous. going by his mother’s last name and his EXCLUSIVE(!!!) USE OF BACKWARDS SPEECH seems to lean extremely heavily towards zatanna being a single parent or his father simply wasn’t in the picture or him just favoring his mother. AND WELL, YOU KNOW, THAT FITS PERFECTLY FOR JOHN. i mean even if john was in the picture, he’d be more of a best friend than a proper father, and the sort of best friend who’s a bad influence.

WHY DON’T WE KNOW ZATARA’S NAME? NONE OF HIS MATERNAL FAMILY NOR HIS MOST POPULARLY ASSUMED FATHER USED ANY ALIASES WHATSOEVER. AND NOW WE HAVE THIS JERK WHO WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT ON AN INDIVIDUAL LEVEL. EVEN HIS FRIENDS USE HIS LAST NAME.

Zatara II`s first name
This post is in regards to the son of Zatanna Zatara & John Constantine (earth 22).
So I was asking one of the creators on twitter awhile back about Zatara II`s first name.

I think I just cracked the code!
before I will tell you my revelation...
I am going to present you the options, I first thought were the most plausible choices, for his first name:
1. Giovanni Zatara
I always liked the idea o Zatanna naming her son after her father, since he means so much to her.
however,
2. John Zatara
seems more logical since the family tree only refers to him as John. so I am not even sure if the creators of the story were aware of both names.
This way he would be a 3rd-Generation-John
And now for my final tr- I mean suggestion
BE prepared to be astounded!
