literally always affected over how stede's character so perfectly encapsulates the lgbt experience in so many ways but in particular that scene in ep10 where he's drinking with all those guys and he basically fucking outs himself hurts me SO MUCH, because it so viscerally captured the harrowing experience of spending most of your time around other lgbt people (stede when he was aboard the revenge) to the point that it's just a normal part of your life and it's just accepted by everyone around you and you don't have to hide it or put up a front, and you basically forget that people outside of your little bubble don't think the way you do and then get HIT by the stark realisation that there are people out there who won't accept you for who you are and suddenly you have to be SO CAREFUL and it's soul crushing. you can see it dawn on him that this is not a safe space for the person he's become comfortable being, the way he has to catch himself and has to do the awful damage control of helping ed maintain his image and then refusing to talk any more about him. he outed them both and he knows it. it's literally like when you have to misgender your trans friend in front of their parents and a bit of your soul dies every time. I cannot deny the stuff with his family is painful and such a real experience for so many gay men (and it was beautifully done and I'll never get over how they gave us a story like that), but that one scene is what hurts me the most because it's so UNIVERSAL. so much of the lgbt experience is learning to make yourself palatable to others, to keep everyone who will never fully understand or accept you happy by reducing yourself down to a version of yourself they can tolerate and this scene portrays that so well. watching him deal with the crushing realisation that he's not even welcome among his peers anymore unless he plays up this veneer of masculinity and tells them all stories of how scary blackbeard is to keep them all satiated, all the while he knows blackbeard is kind and soft and gay and literally in love with him.... and he can't tell them, because they would never accept it.... it's fucking awful. that's when it really hits him how fucking alone he is, how he can never truly fit in ever again because of how being a pirate has changed him forever; not because it's hardened him or made him more cruel or world-weary - but because it made him so happy. because it was a place he could just be himself. it was a safe space for him that was so far removed from society's attitude to people like him he literally forgot he and his crew weren't in the majority. and he's never ever going to find that kind of acceptance ever again.

something about mary magdalene not recognising jesus until he calls her by her name makes me crazy i dont even know how to put it into words. its as if in that moment mary remembers all the times jesus has asked her for advice or told her a joke or simply greeted her using that same name and tone and stops weeping because she knows that voice ! she has heard it mutter her name countless of times ! how could she forget !
