the foster family plot:
Alex (traumatized. poor. gay. up to this point pretty accurate) is adopted by the washington family and meets his new brother "laff" who goes "oui mon ami" and "mon chere" constantly
Cries, starves, does generally stupid things while Washingdad watches concerned. Washingdad immediately calls him son of course and Alex doesn't like that
Goes to school. Writes long essays. Immediately starts fist fighting the plastics: Jeffmads and aaron burr who's not mean or nice but somewhere in between.
Meets John Laurens and immediately begins making out
Hercules Mulligan watches all of this from the back of the car
At least one fainting incident/panic attack in front of everyone
Better if he starts speaking in French and or Spanish during the panic attack
They all fall asleep on each other while washingdad sighs "my boys"
Proceed to make out with John Laurens right next to Hercules and Lafayette, also making out
Down at least two energy drinks
Optional: meet the Schuyler sisters and Eliza who is immediately a bff. sister of sorts!
Non-optional: John Laurens is abused by his dad and there must be the tag "Henry Laurens' A+ Parenting"
2016-2019 Hamilton fanfics were wild. King George would be a bus driver to American Revolution High School, where Washington was a fatherly teacher to the bullied and abused tweak Hamilton and his little gang of sad gay friends đ
does anyone remember when all hamilton fanfic had john laurens be obsessed with...turtles? or something? jefferson's body could only digest mac and cheese. eliza dated maria reynolds. and the phrase "hamilsquad" was used in far too many texting au posts. oh the memories this is conjuring up.
The Dinner Table Bargain:

this is made explicit in the musical but i'd argue it's also very much applicable to the real hamilton. his childhood experiences probably pushed him on and gave him that great thirst and drive, and he channeled that energy into writing.
and of course, honor was always going to be a touchy subject. illegitimate orphan of a woman called a whore is bad enough, but that combined with actually upper-class, noble familial connections? the fact that his father wasn't even dead so alexander probably kept him in his mind constantly? it probably exacerbated hamilton's issues even more so than if he'd just been a poor man's son. because now you've got a sense that you're owed something and have something to be proud of, but you still have to fight for it tooth and nail every step of the way.
"Why do you write like you need it to survive?" because he does he does he does. he wouldn't have survived if he hadn't begun clerking for the landlord or worked in a trading charter, jobs that inherently require skills in writing. he wrote about the hurricane's destruction of his hometown so poignantly that people decided to help him in furthering his education, KEEPING HIM ALIVE. and as much as he wanted to be something else, as much as he wanted a troop of men to command, hamilton as an adult/young man was NOTHING without his writing. he wouldn't have been washington's right hand man, he wouldn't have gone to the winter's ball to meet eliza, he wouldn't have wooed her with his letters or convinced her father, he wouldn't have built his career or been a founding father. he would have died, a bastard, orphan, impoverished. dead. "Why do you write like you need it to survive?" because he DOES. that's why hamilton could never let an insult go, that's why he always needed to write back, that's why he never stopped reaching for more, because without his writing, without his wit, without his rapid responses, he is NOTHING
maybe this is a controversial statement but every time i see someone get very upset about fandom surrounding the founding fathers and how it's romanticizing them - have you considered that being forced into a homosexual relationship with their worst political enemies is most likely the biggest nightmare of those 18th century white men?
if anything the amrev fandom is probably humiliating these men on a much more visceral, personal level than academic critique (which is still important!).
i dunno, i think their complicated legacies can make space for an interesting conversation on dismantling these figures as larger than life. pulling them "down" to the level of shipping online. it's complicated and i do understand there is reason why people don't like it, especially in consideration of hamilton the musical, but i think it's worth thinking about.
musical hamburr's first commandment is that burr must. be. obsessed. with alexander hamilton. he needs to believe in hamilton, see him as a threat, something greater than, to the very very end. in a way, musical burr defines himself through hamilton - by being un-hamilton, by not being in the room where hamilton is, and being tormented by it.
it's also exciting when hamilton's just as obsessed with burr. then you get that dynamic of both of them circling each other, never able to let go first despite both of them knowing they're on completely different paths.
but aaron burr being astronomically down bad is the basic requirement.
the way a random hamilton audio goes viral on tiktok every few months needs to be studied. you know the one that's trending rn. "mr. vice president. mr. madison. senator burr. what is this?" hounds me on my fyp every few videos. that musical will never leave our public consciousness. people can't get enough of it even though they claim it's cringe.
just a month ago it was the "undressed she looked a mess pathetic she cried"; "ha! you don't even know what you're asking me to confess"; before that it was the horrifying "if i prove that i never touched my balls" audio; the "eating oreos in a parked car" one; then it was first burn and aaron burr's female rage "how does hamilton an arrogant immigrant orphan bastard" rant; and several others i can't even remember. i'm honestly impressed at this point.
my fav genre of hamilton tiktok edits is the people editing the burr-hamilton duel to the sound "everybody respects the shooter but the one in front of the gun lives forever" but completely misunderstanding who "the one in front of the gun" should refer to đ
does anyone else remember being part of a hamilton musical google plus group before it shut down that regurgitated the same memes and false historical anecdotes or was that a fever dream i hallucinated
remember the glorious day when someone corrected aaron burr's wikipedia page and finally revealed to the world that he was responsible for jefferson's miku binder? nobody ever say again that burr gets a bad rep because of the duel.

everyday i see people on tiktok mouthing the words to hamilton songs with the text "haha call me a weirdo but i still remember every single word of this musical haha" and i think...you would have so much more fun on tumblr...put down your gen-z chill and join us.
it will never fail to amuse me that john jay, the (apparently) level-headed, reasonable guy that everyone passes over, caught a stray in hamilton. it doesn't have time for the jay treaty but it does have time to say "john jay got sick after five", forever cementing his memory in the public consciousness as the slacker in the group project.
nicholas fish is my daily reminder that letters aren't everything and we lack a whole bunch of context and interactions. he had a lifelong friendship with hamilton we don't know much about due to lack of correspondence (fish might've burned them for privacy, especially since he and morris got their hands on ham's papers after his death, i believe).
but i think it must have been a steady and deep 30 yr long friendship: they were college frat bros together (debate club actually but i bet they acted like frat bros), members of the hearts of oak in the 1770s - and he was later involved in hamfamily matters, referenced at times in letters between ham and betsey. he was even the second for a potential duel between ham and nicholson in 1795.
and of course, his son born in 1808 was named hamilton fish.
unfortunately i find the name "hamilton fish" hilarious, moreso because hamilton fish named his son hamilton fish II, who named his son hamilton fish III, who named his son hamilton fish IV. somebody named hamilton fish IV was walking around on this earth up to 1996.
i just get all emotional when i think about how family names often reflect close loved ones. even if the names end up being ridiculous. hamilton lasting in the fish family names until the literal 1990s, laurens slipping into the hamilton family names.
also, for my hamilton musical enthusiasts: the cellist for the west end run of hamilton was chris fish, a direct discendant of nicholas fish!
