it's rare for the ragnvindr heir to display insecurity, ever the type to swallow his feelings and push them aside, but around someone his heart geared towards, everything spilled out.

small smile tugs at his lips in relief. he lets out a sigh and he reaches out to take his hand.

"thank you..."

" it's customary to take out new business partners out to dinner, maybe even protocol if you look into the old books written by the former dukes and..." while he does go on on a slightly longer explanation, there's a note handed over to diluc. writing is a little off (it doesn't seem customary, more personal if anything), but there's a name of a restaurant written on it, alongside a time, "... i do have some paperwork i need to catch up on first, so unless you have any special interest in numbers and budgeting..."

a shrug, the note held out for diluc to take, the duke offering a polite but seemingly soft smile; "...let me meet you at this restaurant a little later ? it's on me. "

ruby hues lower to the note, amusement etching across his features as he plucks it, reading over it. ah, so that's how it is, is it? well, he can't deny he's interested in the offer. it would be nice to have a peaceful meal with like-minded company. besides, he doesn't have anything urgent to return to, so he can spare time.

he lifts his gaze to regard the warden and he nods, already planning his schedule for the day.

"very well. i did want to visit a few shops, so i will most certainly meet you for lunch after."

Lays across the tavern bar. "I'm on the menu." He is not on the menu but some taverngoers find him funny enough to order their usual drink and Aether.

an amused smirk sketches across his face before he shakes his head.

"is that so? i do wonder when i added it. feel free to refresh me, dear traveler, i'm awfully forgetful." he slides said menu over.

"... I... Don't think I've committed any form of blasphemy as of late."

diluc hums in response, putting a hand over his chin in thought.

"you sound unsure. as far as i recall, the last time you went against a god was when, a couple months ago?" he asks. "that's a form of blasphemy, i believe."

it was practically unheard of for diluc to be ambushed or outnumbered, in fact, there was never such thing as 'outnumbered'. he always managed to pull through, yet for once, he faltered. he had never faced a herald before, and he was surprised it had come this far out close to the city.

faced with such an opponent, diluc was at a loss.

he pants heavily as he regains his footing, glaring at the monster when help arrives unexpectedly. he watches the creature retreat, and he sighs heavily.

the flames die out from his claymore and it dematerializes.

"it seems my luck ran out for once." he pauses, "thank you."

with  a  swift  movement  of  his  blade,  calcharo  slices  through  the  various  abyssal  enemies  in  front  of  him. 

he  then  turns  his  attention  to  another,  one  that's  been  watching  the  fight  from  the  beginning.  though  they  were  able  to  go  unseen  up  until  this  point,  the  mercenary  had  sensed  their  presence.  perhaps  it  is  because  they  share  something  in  common.  thinking  about  it  for  too  long  only  angers  him. 

"  what  ?  not  interested  in  joinin'  your  buddies  ?  "  naturally,  his  question  goes  unanswered  and  instead,  he  watches  as  the  enemy  disappears  through  a  portal  of  sorts. 

when  he  is  certain  that  the  danger  has  passed,  he  puts  away  his  sword,  promptly  turning  his  attention  to  diluc. "  fancy  seein'  you  again.  you  make  it  habit  of  being  swarmed  by  enemies,  or  you  jus'  got  incredibly  bad  luck  ?  " 

it's nice to find a lake in mondstadt that hadn't been turned upside down and void of all fish due to a certain someone's habit of 'fish - blasting' so diluc opted to take freminet out to the lake near the dawn winery. it's a blessing klee doesn't come out this far to chase the fish population away, not to mention, the cool waters from dragonspine give them more variety.

he's sitting on the small hill in the middle of the lake under the shade, freminet at his side. he enjoys this rare moment of peace and relaxation in his ordinarily busy life, crystalflies fluttering around him.

he looks down at the diver when he feels him tugging his sleeve with a fish in hand.

he perks his brow at the silent gesture before he chuckles once he catches on. removing a glove, he takes the fish and uses his pyro to cook it.

( 🔧 ) THE DIVER GLANCED down at the catch he'd gotten, having half a mind to just eat the fish raw ( it wouldn't bother him any, considering he was an aquatic hybrid. it tasted good. ) but his gaze set itself on the pyro archon. he pauses, looking back down to the fish in his hand.

HE TROTS CLOSE, clawed hand gently tugging at diluc's sleeve, wordlessly holding the fish up for him. fire please.

the phoenix is shocked that the captain had come to him for this . not only is one of the lower ranked harbingers , but his experience was still rather novice.

still , he knew not to turn this away .

" lord first , how may i help ? " he asks with a respectful bow of his head as he approaches .

diluc doesn't always allow others to touch his hair so freely , but he had grown to trust the fairy . he found she was rather endearing , and he couldn't help adoring her . he was sitting at his desk , poring over notes and letters the traveler had brought , paimon cautiously winding windwheel asters into his soft curls .

he felt one slipping and reached up to tuck it back into his hair .

he sat up a bit , touching the rest of his hair .

" well ? how does it look ? "

the pyro archon was perched on a rooftop , catching the faint breeze before footsteps sounded behind him . he looked over his shoulder at the bard , and he sighed , turning his attention back to the city .

why is he doing this ? he could easily make a snarky remark that he was just picking up the knights' slack , but they both knew it was more than that .

" well , this is my home . too much evil lurks around every corner , evil that not everyone knows about or cares to see . the people deserve to sleep peacefully at night without a worry . "

that , and diluc wanted to make up for his failures . he couldn't protect his own family from danger , it was hard to swallow , so he fought to protect mondstadt .

[ TAKE ]  for the taller muse to find the shorter one has ‘borrowed’ a shirt/sweater/jacket etc.  which is oversized on them.  

despite being made of fire and running at high temperatures , the winters of snezhnaya were brutal . the shivering phoenix had managed to find one of the captain's coat as diluc's wasn't nearly as warm . he pulled it on and sighed in relief , snuggling into the thick fur .

he relaxed , eyes closed , senses dialed back as he got comfortable . he didn't hear the heavy footsteps until a voice reached his ears .

he jerked and looked up , a blush filling his cheeks as he gave a sheepish grin .

" s - sorry , sir . i got cold . "

he understood at the end of the day that his children were members of the fatui , that they would always be sent out on missions , and would be prone to violence or even murder . however , that didn't stop him from disliking it , call him a hypocrite . he had wanted to give these children a better life -- one where they wouldn't have to assassinate others for a mission , one where they didn't have to do anything but just live .

he was clearing up his desk , having brought freminet into his office to relax from the actions he had just performed earlier , and to have a discussion about it .

his eyes lifted from the pile of paperwork he was moving , catching freminet's fear and the panicked babbling .

releasing a sigh , diluc paused in his actions and he rounded his desk . he crouched in front of the diver to peer into his eyes .

" freminet , i'm not disposing you . not today , not ever . " he swore firmly . " i'm not angry with you , nor are you in trouble . i didn't bring you in here to yell at you , though we do need to talk about what happened . i swear it , however , that you are not going to be thrown out . "

( 🔧 ) HE LOOKS DOWN at his hands, trying to cease the shaking that enveloped them ; the claws painted red. he did not dare look up, nervous of the punishment he may receive ( or worse ) for being caught. he should have noticed the tail he had on him ; that master diluc would take notice that he was gone and send one to follow him. he swallows, tail curling around the chair as his let out a shaky breath.

❝ I - IF YOU DISPOSE of me, be a - aware that you will have to . . to do the same to lyney and lynette as well. and . . and . . ❞ his threat runs out of steam, ceasing his words as he bit back a sob. don't cry ----- Father hated it when he cried. he had to be strong.

it was moments like this where diluc truly despised the fatui and their methods . putting children through this and conditioning them to expect punishment , it was unfathomable .

he sighed softly . he couldn't blame freminet or the twins for their behavior , this wasn't the first time they each tried to take the blame for something and face the consequences . it bothered diluc . if he wasn't barred from engaging with the harbingers , he would have a few choice words with this ' father ' of theirs .

" because it is not your fault . this is the way you were raised and taught . even if i disapprove , i cannot blame you for the things you are forced to do . i am bothered you were made to take a life , but not because you did it . i'm bothered that it was an order to begin with . therefore , i am not mad at you . i am mad at your father , if i'm being honest . fatuus or not , you are still children . you shouldn't have to commit such heavy actions . "

" well , some grapes tend to grow sweeter depending on how ripe they are when i harvest them , so i don't always need to add too much sugar . though , there are times where i experiment with different ingredients , like hints of strawberry or other fruits to give it an enhanced flavor . it depends on how creative my mind is at the moment . " he couldn't help but ramble away , proud of his work and eager to be asked about his life's passion .

" if you'd like , i'd be happy to show you the way i make some of my juice . " he offered .

"How do you make the juice taste different?" She couldn't help but to wonder aloud as she sat there, her little feet kicking and fingers tapping along the side of the glass Diluc had presented her. "You grow them all the same, but the juices don't taste the same."

he was flipping through a tome that had been delivered to him from his intelligence , studying the runes and trying to identify the cypher used to encrypt the pages . he had allowed freminet to relax in his office while he worked as downstairs was rather rowdy with lyney practicing a new show .

he heard freminet's soft voice , and he looked up in confusion before his eyes strayed to the candy .

" oh . go ahead . " he offered a smile and gently nudged the bowl closer to the diver . he often kept the bowl on his desk for whenever he needed something to nibble on during his work .

( 🌙 ) SHE'D BEEN GONE for at least a month, give or take, but it was nothing unusual with how lumine travelled teyvat looking for her brother. also getting into trouble with paimon in tow. however, only days prior her trail had gone cold on the outskirts of liyue and she all but seemed to vanish without a trace. concerning as it may have been, no alarm had been sounded just yet.

IN THE END there was no need as when diluc awoke the day of his birthday and made his way downstairs - he was greeted with a familiar face, a smile upon her face as she held a box in hand. her hair looked as if she'd been through a thunderstorm but SHE LOOKED WELL beyond that.

it certainly wasn't odd for the traveler to suddenly drop off the face of teyvat , diluc knew she couldn't always be available , so he wasn't too concerned when his network lost her trail or when she was nowhere to be seen . he figured she had some work that couldn't be traced , and he respected that .

though , he was still pleasantly grateful he didn't have to raise any red flags for her absence when he found her in the manor the next morning .

crimson eyes took in the sight before him , glad she was clearly okay and radiant . he glanced at the present , about to ask what she could have possibly gotten him before he noticed her bounding for him . he chuckled and he easily caught the traveler , hugging her close .

" thank you , mi vida . " he murmured as he kissed the top of her head .

It has been a while since she has made her way back to the Dawn Winery, but she couldn't miss the special occasion. And truthfully, her heart always called back to Mondstadt, it was a longing she couldn't explain herself.

"Grape juice?" the afternoon breeze ruffled her blond strands. She has brought some grape juice back from Sumeru, there's a slight difference in flavour she has noticed compared to the juice produced from Diluc's Winery. It wasn't anything special but she hoped the thought itself would make up for her absence in so long.

"A birthday always deserves a good toast too."

he looked at the bottle in surprise before a pleasant smile appeared on his face at the thoughtful gift and wishes .

" thank you , lumine . it's much appreciated . . . i will be sure to taste it when i get a chance . " he said as he delicately took the juice into his hands .

he looked over the label . he hummed in thought , then popped the cork and took a curious sniff . yes , definitely different from his own concoctions . he had always been curious about sumeru and their blends .

it was rare for diluc to step foot into the knights of favonius headquarters , but when not even kaeya or lisa could convince jean to rest , it was time to call in the reinforcements .

as such , diluc begrudgingly approached the acting grand master's office all while avoiding various knights . he was about to open the door when jean emerged , essentially dead on her feet .

" jean . when was the last time you slept ? " he asked as he sidestepped her question . despite his gruff tone of voice and frown on his face , it was evident he was worried about her .

it all happened so fast . one minute they were fighting fluidly , their styles flowing naturally like it had when they were training to be knights ; the next he spotted the pyroslinger bracer hopping a distance away and aiming for them .

diluc had barely managed to throw himself into the line of fire and shoved kaeya down . his side erupted with pain from the bullet piercing through , his consciousness drifting for a moment . if he had hesitated a second longer , kaeya would have been hit .

darkness consumed for a moment before his senses returned . he could feel kaeya under him before he was rolled off , the excruciating pain of the bullet wound , and he could hear his brother's panicked yelling , hands trying to stem the bleeding .

crimson eyes fluttered open and he coughed , wincing and grunting as his side burned . he had way worse , far worse , in fact . still , it wasn't exactly pleasant , not to mention the nasty scar it would leave .

" i - i'm fine . " he wheezed , his vision burning brightly at his thigh to indicate so . he looked down to assess his own injury , but with the cold tundra of dragonspine , the rapid blood loss and the pain rattling his head , he felt too weak to even lift his head .

he groaned and slumped back down . there was no way they'd be able to trek all the way back down to the camp near the foot of the mountain . diluc felt sick and queasy from the injury .

" heh . looks like my baby brother's going to have to carry me . " he tried to joke but his voice is crackly and rough , face scrunched up .

37. A kiss to the back of the neck

it was a particularly hot day , even within the tavern . as a result , diluc had his hair tied up in a bun to keep it out of his face and away from his neck . with the thick locks , he knew it would become unbearable while he worked .

there was a lull in patrons and he took the moment to catch his breath . of course warm days would send customers into the tavern in roves for refreshing drinks , which wound up putting diluc to harder work than most nights .

he was forever grateful that his wife had dropped by and graciously offered assistance . he wasn't one to get overwhelmed , but the help was appreciated nonetheless .

he was fixing his bun when he felt her hands settle on his waist from behind , the traveler leaning up on her tiptoes to plant a soft kiss to his exposed neck .

he shivered in response and he lowered his arms , glancing back . a warm blush rose , though it wasn't from the warmth of the weather .

" what was that for ? " he asked , amused .

it had been a long time since he had gone out for leisure , and it was certainly even longer that he had gone out with olivine due to their busy schedules . an event was coming up hosted by the cathedral , and of course , olivine was a part of it . as such , he invited diluc .

the redhead hummed , taking olivine's hand . " very well , i'll go . we haven't spent much time together in any case . it will be . . . fun . "
