the first time you two really hug-hugged was back in college. that was also the first moment something sparked in jaehyun. fleeting side-hugs didn’t count, for that hug lasted 20 seconds. nothing more, nothing less.

you two were clad in the school’s uniform, seated anxiously in your respective seats. the teachers voice droned on, something about motivations and passions and dreams, but all jaehyun could focus on was you. his best friend. his crush.

when you two had finally collected your results, jaehyun made a beeline towards you, pulling you out of the cacophony of the class’ mixed reactions. your hands were shaking and jaehyun held them.

“i...”

“want a hug?” jaehyun offered and you hesitantly nodded, shuffling into his embrace. that hug felt good. jaehyun felt you sigh into his embrace. nineteen...twenty.

you naturally pulled apart from him, a small smile on your face.

“did you do...okay?” he searched your face for any signs of bad news. his results was pretty good, enough to get him to university if he wanted.

“i did. better than okay actually. i was so scared out of my mind.”

you showed him your result slip and he grinned, “i knew you could do it.”

“thank you for the hug. i was just reeling from the shock.” you explained and jaehyun softly laughed, “i’m just glad we’re both okay.”

jaehyun looked up from his laptop.

another knock at his window.

he really wasn’t hearing things. removing his earpieces, he pushed his chair back and padded over.

there you were, waving back at him. you had somehow managed to crouch by the small ledge outside his window. hurriedly opening his windows, he ushered you in, trying and failing to stiffle his excitement.

“what are you doing here? are you crazy?” jaehyun grabbed a hoodie off his chair and pulled it over you, noting how you were only in a simple tee and jogger pants.

“hey, give me some credit for making it to your house in one piece.” you lightly punched his shoulders. “you could have just came in from the front door!” jaehyun commented as closed the windows behind you.

“that would be so awkward: you’re parents are literally hosting some reunion party downstairs! can you imagine the faces if i came through the front door?”

jaehyun could imagine it.

he wiped that image off his mind, a smirk creeping up on his face, “yeah that would have been quite the shock. i still can’t believe it.”

“well, i’m here now.” you opened your arms, as if presenting yourself to him. he took a step towards you, “gosh, i’ve missed you so much.”

crushing you in a big bear hug, you two swayed back and forth, in your own little bubble. time seemed to waft around the two of you, as jaehyun took in you in this very mundane moment. “i’m assuming you’ve told your parents before leaving the house?”

“i told them it was a sleepover, so come on! let’s watch something!”

“jaehyun, can...can you sit here?” you patted the empty space between your legs and jaehyun cocked his head to one side, “can i even fit?”

“well, we can make it work?” somehow you two made it work: with jaehyun seated in front of you, he managed to tuck himself into your hold, save for his legs which were straddled around your waist.

he lay his head on your shoulder, mimicking that of a koala.

it usually was the opposite, with you fitting perfectly into his bigger frame. the last time jaehyun was held was when his mother rocked him to sleep. you were carding your hands through his hair and he melted into your touch. he certainly could get used to this. it was after a brief period of silence that you spoke up.

“is it comfortable?” you mumbled and he nodded, “yeah.”

he could hear how fast your heart was beating, but decided not to bring it up. “i know you must be wondering why...why i asked you to...do this?”

you sounded so small to jaehyun, but because of his position he could only keep his head by your shoulder.

“your heart’s beating really quickly.” he blurted out. “ah yeah. about that...i don’t know either. i’ve been feeling super anxious over nothing lately. i just wanted to...take some time to hug you. hold you.” you rambled, hand actions never once ceasing.

you needed something to ground you, he realized.

“we should do this more often. not that I dislike what we normally do, but this is a nice change of pace.” jaehyun chuckled.

“this is fine with you?" cute.

“of course.”

“i love you. i won't ever let go.”

↬ tags: friends to lovers, awkward interactions, mentions of first date (awh!), hand holding, feel good vibes, i wanted to write about pavlov experiment but it didnt work too well (again)

summary: jaehyun may have pavloved you with the hand holding (bad summary dont trust just read)

a/n: merry christmas in advance ! here's me trying to spread the good cheer with something warm today -`♡´-

jaehyun was sat on the floor, busy filing away some albums, sorting them by artist and then by date of release. scattered all around him, he twists and turns in attempt to locate some boxes placed haphazardly. out of the corner of his eyes, he spots the beaten up box (probably from his teenage days) a few feet away from him right at the door.

ah, but it's kinda far…

just then, you walked into the room and he immediately raises his hands. you walked over, confused as you laced your fingers through his. jaehyun glances up at his intertwined hands and then back at your puzzled expression.

"are you okay my love?" you asked softly, and he retracts his hand all while chuckling. "w-why? did i do something wrong?" you cocked your head to one side and jaehyun chortles even harder at how cute you were.

jaehyun wiped the tears from his eyes, "i just wanted to you help me take that box, not hold my hand!" now it was your turn to smile, hiding your peals of laughter behind your hand. you squeezed his hand before spinning around to grab the box, then you sat down beside him.

he stares at you as if you were his world and you sheepishly rubbed the back of your neck, “did i take the wrong box? why are you looking at me like that?”

“no, i was just reminiscing about…”

he remembers the first time he actually got to hold hands with you.

his favourite memory was his first date with you because he was so nervous out of his mind. wiping his palms back and forth on his jeans, he was waiting for you outside your workplace.

when he finally saw you walk out, his heart soared as he approached you. noticing that you were carrying a rather heavy looking tote bag, he held his hand out to offer to hold it.

but what you did next nearly caused his entire being to short-circuit, for with a very obvious blush on your face you placed your hand in his.

“uh…your…bag?” “oh my gosh…” you retracted your hand yet jaehyun was quicker to grab ahold of you, using his other free hand to take your bag off your shoulders, easily swinging it onto his side.

he felt this tips of his ears burning: you two must have looked quite silly standing there. “can i...keep holding your hand?” if even possible, jaehyun watched as you turned a bright red and you tucked your head down, nodding once.

“yeah you can.”

with every time he held his hands out, you started to associate that with hand holding.

jaehyun would pull you in closer to his side and he adores that beam you have on your face when gazing at him from your side. he thinks you’re pretty cute, like a little puppy when asked to give its paw.

he was brought back to the present from the sound of your giggles as you added onto your memories of that incident. he held out his hand again, purposefully this time and you laced your fingers with his and he pulls you closer to his side.

“i love you. i won't ever let go.”
