Here's an example why cows make the best models. The shutter speed was 2 seconds and she lay perfectly still. The light comes from a lamppost.

I was there in the middle of the night for the Aurora Borealis, but I saw nothing. It was just pitch black. Only when I got home did I see on the RAWs that the sky was pinkish.
