Part 2. A Walking Song
Another song with more than one version! This time there are only two versions: the first, sung by the three hobbits in Woody End and the second, sung by Frodo in his Last Journey through the Shire.
The first version was so sweet and 'Hobbitish'. For a Hobbit, an adventure is supposed to be short and end well; with a warm fire and a comfortable bed. Singing the first version, none of the Hobbits knew what awaited them; they only knew one type of adventure.
But the second version, Frodo's version, sums up their whole journey. They had walked forward without hope, without a vision of a warm home in the future. Now, after all, it is time for the Last Adventure; Frodo, learned by experience knows how painful leaving what you love behind can be.
Up to this point in the book I had (almost) not cried at all, but....
"A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon and East of the Sun"
It was too much for my nerves. Definitely too much!
