you, of soot, and I, of silver

I learned to measure moments by how long it took the second hand to reach inside my empty chest and pull the fraying, broken strands

Of silver wire and cotton string and threads so thin they weren’t seen and I wound them all around me while I napped inside the walls

Of the house that I grew up in and the fields and farms beyond and every shed and every shadow keeping company with me

Beside my bed, beside my body, and besides all that I keep up above the mantelpiece, where the clocks chimes out the hour

And the second hand ticks and tocks and pulls me from my glower

While I measured all the moments and placed them in a pot and the book I read between was emptier than the room was hot

And when I drew the cake out it was burned along the sides and I touched it with my fingers and forgot I was alive

But the second hand was ticking and the clock was keeping time and swallowed all the ashes and I lay and wept and sighed

Until the curtains all caught fire and the fields beyond were bright and I measured all the moments from the dawn until the night

And I ticked and clicked and settled while the trigger held me tight and I roared with silent sorrow as I sped across the meadow and the gates could not have stopped me and I set the stars alight

I learned to measure moments by how long it took the second hand to reach inside my bullet holes and bury me in sand
