Jaal: Do not the other mothers take care of them then?
Ryder: As far as I know, Milky Way aliens just have one set usually.

Since season 1, I just couldn’t see them as a permanent romantic couple. Yeah, there was a good amount of what appeared to be UST between them, but I think it stemmed more from Rin’s teen angst and frustration with himself and the wall he hit and the fact that Haru was the root of his frustration than romantic interest. It’s more of Rin’s general grabby, emotional, and passionate nature that it comes out like UST. It’s just…from what I’ve seen, these two can be best friends and have this great rivalry, but swimming is what holds them together, it’s what they have in common and share. You rarely (if ever?) see them do anything or talk about anything that DOESN’T have anything to do with swimming. You can’t really have a romantic relationship from just one thing in common. This is why I prefer SR and MH as romantic pairs because these two pairs grew up together, they know each other inside out, they understand each other outside of swimming. You see Makoto and Haru spending time together for no other reason other than to enjoy each other’s company. They talk about nonsensical things, they talk about serious things. They support each other and rely easily on each other. Even when competitive swimming is no longer a link between them, they continue to stay together. Sousuke and Rin banter and bicker like an old married couple about anything and everything,yet they very obviously care immensely for each other and look out for each other in all aspects outside of swimming as well. They can have true heart to heart conversations because they know each other best. You can see how much Rin cared when he found out about Sousuke shoulder; he was devastated, but losing that link between them didn’t diminish their relationship in the slightest, instead only spurred them on further.
So yeah, Rin and Haru have a fantastic friendship and rivalry. I don’t doubt that Rin admires Haru immensely and they mutually consider each other very important people in their lives, but if you took swimming away, I’m not really sure they would be able to maintain a very strong relationship. Nothing anywhere near as deep as the one between SR and MH, at least.
