LMAO this is the only explanation I will accept for why steve was in the ensemble

Ponyboy canonically writes The Outsiders in their universe and has the rights to it... So he would have something to do with the movie/play/musical/TV show.

Which would explain why Steve got shoved into ensemble instead of being a main character.
