What was Roose Bolton’s deal, really?  But showverse Roose was great. 

My theory is that Mors and Hother made a plan for both the win and loss of Stannis that would not instantly doom their brother. If both declared war against the Boltons directly, the crown would have no reason the keep the Greatjon alive. So they made a backup plan in case Roose would win the battle against Stannis. Therefore not instantly securing their brothers execution, seeing as if Stannis won the battle, the crown could still use Greatjon as a hostage in order to keep the Umbers in the North and if Roose won the battle, he'd have to keep the Greatjon alive to secure their support.

So Hother took the old men to fight from the inside, most likely dooming them due to being completly surrounded by enemies, while Mors  stayed with the younger generation outside to have a higher survival chance in the battle. And they wanted to be stationed on opposite ends in order to make sure they would not end up fighting their own men.

As we know Hother Umber is only supporting the Boltons due to the Greatjon being a hostage (ADWD, Jon IV "If Whoresbane has joined the Bastard, it can only be because the Lannisters hold the Greatjon captive.", he took the old men (disposable) inside to the Boltons to try to save his brother, while Mors stayed outisde with the boys (the future) to dig up traps.

Mors made it clear to Stannis that he will not fight his brother and wants to be stationed on the other side of the battlefield (ADWD, Jon IV "Stannis ground his teeth. "He informs me that Umber will not fight Umber, for any cause." ").

Another mention: Mors has children, which might be the reason he stayed outside, to give him a better chance at survival.

I focused this on the lords that appear in Winterfell (+ Arnolf & Jonelle). Left out Lords Slate and Flint because too little is known about them, and Rodrik Ryswell because he was already in the last piece and i wanted to focus on the other Ryswells.

If I tell him I am Arya Stark and command him to stand aside… No, she dare not. He was a northman, but not a Winterfell man. He belonged to Roose Bolton.

Old Whoresbane is only here because the Freys hold the Greatjon captive. And do you imagine the Hornwood men have forgotten the Bastard’s last marriage, and how his lady wife was left to starve, chewing her own fingers?
